Epic Games "not focusing on any one thing" for Next-gen Platforms and Unreal Engine 4

In a keynote speech at the Montreal International Game Summit, as reported by Gamasutra, Epic Games co-founder and CTO Tim Sweeney discussed the future of Triple-A game creation from the studio's perspective as both a game developer, and engineer of the popular Unreal Engine technology.

With the next console generation looming, and Unreal Engine 4 posturing for a front-row seat, Sweeney explained how their approach will be different this time around (via: Gamasutra):

Hope we can see more of what it can do soon as so far i'm not impressed.

Here's a more impressive nextgen video that Epic should be aiming for-

That video, is there any proof that it isn't pre-rendered CGI?

As far as the UE4 tech demo was, it was in real time. I think UE4 is more impressive than most engines, it's just that the art direction in the demo was so generic. It was what was going on behind the scenes that made it special. The lighting, physics, 1 million particle effects at 1 given time etc.

I just hope that we get to see an UE4 game soon so we can stop speculating. And for gods sake, I hope they make it better at multi-platform releases (hopefully they learned their lesson)

So you are gonna buy a high end 2016 pc and hope they will push it?

Also they are lying they will focus on MS and xbox again. That is what I think.

taquito4174d ago (Edited 4174d ago )

@bibty,

that clip you posted was really cool...I mean it, never seen that, so maybe, next-next gen

ps5>???

maybe close to that level,

on ps4???

no....

lol...ps4 will be close if we are lucky to what pc was doing two years ago, maybe.....close

certainly not 1600p with 8x aa, and all the bells like a high end pc was doing two years ago but maybe 1080p native, 30 frames, 4x aa, ssao, true hdr, real depth of field, realistic soft shadows and particle physics rendered in real time, if we are lucky ps4, at around $500-$600 will accomplish that, which is about a mid-spec, 2010 pc

your clip, while beautiful, and awesome would CRIPPLE a GTX 680 in a real time game scenario, that card is about 4x more powerful than the entire ps4 will be, cpu, ram included

Thanks, can always hold onto hope

Is that because console makers said no to their specs for u3(unreal 3). Or because they "Love us".

They just can't, they can only focus on what consoles allow them to do, and even then it goes to the highest bidder.

Bladesfist4174d ago

I am pretty sure epic has the latest specs for both consoles.

nolifeking4174d ago

When did I say they didn't?

jmc88884174d ago (Edited 4174d ago )

Um, people are forgetting about the PC. Unreal anyone?

Look people just don't understand that a game engine isn't ONE thing.

That's why you can have Battlefield 3 running on a 360/PS3.....and then running a whole lot better under Ultra settings on a PC. That engine, the same one that ran BF3 on the 360, will run BFwhatever on the 720/PS4...It'll just do it at higher settings than the 360 did.

Of course by then it'll have even more top end stuff for the PC.

So the Unreal 4 engine will be the same way. They'll have the lower end stuff for the consoles, and the upper end stuff for the PC's. When the PS4/720 come out, they won't be running Unreal 4 engine on ultra settings.

It's not like Epic isn't going to make their engine better for PC because consoles can't do it.

Personally I can't wait for Star Citizen on CryEngine3, which the dev already said might be barely possible on 'next-gen' consoles, but probably not.

720 and PS4 will be good systems, but they aren't going to be these massively powerful systems, and so Unreal 4 and the others will have an engine that scales from 'next-gen' to 'next next gen'.

I wouldn't expect another Unreal Engine after this until the 2020's. PC games aren't going to be stuck in ~2012-2013 until then, and Cryengine 3, Unreal 4, Frostbite 2 (though they might call it 2.5 in a few years) will be a good portion of what takes us through this decade scaling up along the way.

If any of their recent comments are anything to go by, they are also working on ways to make development more expensive.

Monstar4174d ago

The Cryengine looks better anyways, Epic are full of themselves.

BitbyDeath4174d ago

Don't know why you got disagrees.
UE4 is barely above this gen.

Cryengine 3 is leagues ahead

bubblebeam4174d ago

@Bitby

The UE4 pic is real time. That pic of the Cryengine was a bullshot from like 2008 or 2009.

I don't know what will be more powerful engine, but a lot of PC gamers agree that in terms of textures, UE3 is better than Cryengine. Cryengine is better at a range of things though, lighting, shadows physics etc.

UE4 Frostbite 2 and Cry Engine 3 are all amazing engines! I'm looking forward to next gen games running these!

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell Of Ar Ciel Retro Review – Love Conquers All

Gary Green said: You’ll be forgiven if you haven’t heard of the Ar Tonelico trilogy. The previous two games arrived so late in the PS2’s life-cycle that they simply went unnoticed. While most were tinkering with their shiny new PS3s, Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia and Ar Tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica were being ‘returned to sender’ by your local Game stores. Luckily, you won’t need to have played them to understand and appreciate this third and final chapter, Qoga (pronounced k-yoga) tells the story of a racial war between humans and Reyvateils, a breed of biologically produced female cyborgs capable of reproduction, while still having a digital mind.

Oh my god. I kinda wish this would get a remaster on PS5, it would be awesome. One of my favorite games on PS3.

That and 3D Dot Game Heroes. It's a shame that some stuff is stuck on PS3.
