Square Enix’s profits are plummeting—and it has no one to blame but itself.
The next Tomb Raider game will take place in India and will feature an "unrestricted" open world setting, based on the latest rumor.
The rumours on the new game sound awful
"A natural disaster strikes northern India revealing ancient emperor Ashoka's ruins and artifacts. Lara strategically races against a Society of Raiders and other rivals for these powerful relics. The Society of Raiders are inspired by Lara yet unaffiliated and might have some opposite agendas. This also relates to a new feature based on recruiting teams and allies to strategically aid you in missions and defeating rivals. There's emphasis on a new non-lethal combat option"
"Generic Ubigame" structure.
4 companions with their own habilities.
Open or semi-open world, not clear.
Lara would have a motorcycle, to make it easier for players to explore.
MMO elements.
5 villains, very stereotypical, including a rich man, a mob boss, and two brothers.
Familiar characters returning, Jonah Maiava and Kurtis Trent.
Lara will have a skill tree with spells.
The game is a mix of various trends and genres."

They are losing money because they have been releasing games that most of their fans don't want and their development cycle for a handful of their games don't match the quality it should have or what it was in PS2/1 era.
SE kind of remind me of Sega a bit. Poured a ton of resources into their main IP and it hasn't sold well, the main difference being that FF was crap and Shenmue was a brilliant game that deserved more.
Now we get watered down FF games from SE and Sonic + 20 sequels from Sega as a result of minimal revenue from their most ambitious IPs.
Time to dust off and make a bad a$$ Secret of Mana and Vagrant Story
