Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver debuted back in 1999 and was a substantial critical and commercial success. It was also technically and aesthetically outstanding - a 3D Metroidvania-style action adventure with no loading times, real-time shifting between parallel worlds, an elegant art style and some of the best voice acting and writing the industry had ever seen. It pushed the humble Playstation to new limits, and eventually got ported to the Dreamcast and PC.
While it was a great game, a few puzzling observations could be made as the game progressed. If you haven't played it, here they are:
- The game ends abruptly with a wholly-unexpected TO BE CONTINUED. The elaborate story that has been woven is in no way resolved.
- When playing the game, early optional areas have masses of detail and exploration opportunities. Towards the end of the game the opposite is the case, with corridors inexplicable walled-off, and tantalizing ledges just out of reach.
- In the final stages of the game, video sequences (described in the plot as visions in time) show the main characters in unfamiliar locations, wielding powers that are not achievable in the game
The answer to these puzzling observations is reasonably well known now: During the game's development, Soul Reaver was proving to be dangerously too ambitious for Crystal Dynamics.
Vampire games are making a comeback of late, and gamers hoping this is a new trend should look back at the 7 best vampire games ever made.
What is a list? A miserable little pile of scribbles.
A Best Vampire Game list and no Bloodborne. A bold choice, indeed.
No Blood Omen? Even today it's one of my favourite vampire games. We could really do with a release on modern platforms.
I really enjoyed Vampyr. The combat is a little clunky and could use some work. However, the story, characters, dialog. setting, and pretty much everything else in the game is great.
Check out our review of the dark fantasy classic, Soul Reaver!
Bring the series back Crystal Dynamics. Didn't realize Amy Henig worked on tihs one thats dope
I’ve been wanting to replay this for over a year. It’s been on “Coming Soon” status on GOG forever. Have no idea what they’re waiting for.
Rebooting seems to be all the rage these days, so here's Chit Hot's picks for seven game series that need a reboot.
Dino Crisis and Legacy of Cain I can get behind. The others, meh. I would also love to see a Remake of Resident Evil: Outbreak, Legend of Dragoon, and Jade Empire.
I absolutely love Banjo Kazooie but holy crap is a Dino Crisis remaster such a massive opportunity for Capcom.
The engine they have used for the RE Remakes is perfect and it would be so cool to see the first two games remade.
Mercenaries, True Crime, Dead to Rights, Max Payne, Manhunt, Duke Nukem, Prince of Persia, Burnout, Matrix, Outrun, Jet Set Radio, Otogi, Kenka Banco, Syphon Filter, Power stone, San Francisco Rush, and despite not being a series, BLACK
The Saints Row reboot needs a reboot. Saints Row 2 holds up quite well, but the original needs a remake at least. Keep everything exactly the same, just with better graphics.
daaaaamn that's a lot of cut content
Soul Reaver is one game which could do with a fully realised next gen remake.
I hope it comes back in a next gen game.
One time I could say I wish it was DLC
The Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver series is one of the best and one of my favorites. They need to make a new game staring the Sarafan Priests or a remake of the original Blood Omen.
Also they need to release Soul Reaver 2, Blood Omen 2 and Defiance on PSN.
Come on guys!
