The Wii U Will Be the Best Next-Gen Console

"After watching the Nintendo Direct Wii U Preview Event, it’s safe to say that Nintendo is on top of their game. Admittedly, I was skeptical about how the Wii U would revolutionize the gaming industry, fearing that the controversial Gamepad would turn out to be just another disappointing gimmick, much in the way the Wii’s motion controls were. However, all of that has changed, and Nintendo is definitely on the right track to creating one of the most unique and engaging consoles the industry has seen. Here’s why."

Lol... Is this 2006?

darthv724259d ago (Edited 4259d ago )

I am not going to agree or disagree. i will say this. there is more to a platform than just the technical abilities.

It can only be as good as the sum of its parts. by that would be the games and how well the developers use all the resources at their disposal.

Dread4259d ago

agreed 100%

good post.

OC_MurphysLaw4259d ago

+bub... well said @darthv72.

sikbeta4259d ago

Lets just wait untile the other 2 come out, it'll sell alot, that's a given, like the wii, it'll be the best? we don't know yet...

Lucretia4259d ago

regardless the wii-u wont be the best system,

look at the moronic fanboys who think the wii was the best console this gen haha. they think it because it sold the most, yet it was played the least and had the least good software.

i mean which "best" is this artcle speaking of? selling? games? tech? or is it just pure fanboyism???? im betting fanboyism

TekoIie4258d ago

@Lucretia

Why are you trolling every Ninty/Wii U article?

LocutusEstBorg4258d ago (Edited 4258d ago )

Wrong. The best platform has the most powerful CPU and GPU. It only executes code the developers write and the Playstation and Xbox will do it better than the Wii.

SilentNegotiator4258d ago

It might help if we knew more than 0% about the other next-gen consoles.

TheRealSpy4258d ago

considering MS is already offering something similar on the current gen, it's hard not to judge.

nintendo is behind the times. they aren't in touch with the majority of the market. it's pretty obvious.

i know there are still a lot of nintendo fanboys out there. i used to be one of them. til gamecube when i finally learned my lesson. it's time to recognize quality for quality and not project what we want into something that isn't there.

Timmer4258d ago

@KurianOfBorg

When did having the most impressive tech instantly make it the better console? Yes, I'm aware that the better tech you have, the more things you can do in a game.

That being said, it really should be all about the games. PS2 was weak compared to the Xbox/Gamecube, yet it's possibly the best console in history, thanks to its gigantic library of amazing games.

The Wii might have sold well, but that doesn't make it a great console. It had a good selection of first-party titles, as did the Gamecube, but it lacked third-party titles to help put it over the edge. I feel the 360 was the opposite of the Wii; it had all the great third-party titles, but I've never been a big fan of any of the MS exclusives, except for Halo. Sony's PS3 has probably been the best console this gen thanks to the good first- and third-party support.

Now, back to the WiiU. It seems that third-party developers are somewhat more inclined to develop for it (some like Ubisoft and Platinum Games seem to be happy with it, but Bethesda/Rockstar aren't entirely sure what to make of it yet). If the WiiU can get as much third-party support, and not be too underpowered as compared to the PS4/NeXtbox, combined with it's stellar first-party titles, then I could totally see Nintendo having the best console for the next-gen.

But hey, Sony's won that competition the last two gens, in my mind, Nintendo has work to do.

Getowned4258d ago

I know Wii U will sell, but dose anyone think they will achieve Wii sales ? 99% of the people I know that have a Wii never play it and im guilty of this too, I'm really hesitant to buy WiiU because of the Wii it was really lacking in everything. It dose look more promising than the Wii ever did yet the lunch games are mostly games I already own and have no interest in buying again.

No one could possibly say that the WiiU will be "the best "Next-Gen" console" when none of the othere are out, nor the WiiU yet. I'm not going to even touch the WiiU for the next 2 years afters its release even that I still might not depending on the other two consoles, I really want to see what Sony and MS are cooking up first.

princejb1344258d ago

agree its not all about the specs or power under the hood of the console
i recall psp having much greater graphics than the ds
but i ended up playing my ds 90% more than my psp because of its fun games

konohashin4258d ago (Edited 4258d ago )

@KurianOfBorg

So you say that the PS2 was the most shitty console of the last generation? Because it was weaker than Gamecube or Xbox (and not proven more powerful than Dreamcast)

Lol

I like people with not fully developed brains they make for alot of funny moments online ;)

lol, we have heard less than nothing about the other competition, yet he feels it's the best compared to current gen consoles, and therefore will be the best overall console. I just saved you guys 2 minutes of your life.

smashcrashbash4259d ago

He is just trying to stir up trouble. Saying the Wii U is the best console before others have been revealed is just the level of pathetic crap we have reached as gamers. Nintendo has already won because they netted Bayonetta according to many people. It's also funny how people keep trying to compare it to six year old consoles. 'Oh the Wii U is better then the Ps3 and 360'. And the Next PlayStation and Xbox will be better then the PS3 and Xbox 360. What's your point?

TheRealSpy4258d ago

"gamers"

i see a lot of ppl who play games. i don't see many gamers on n4g.

attilayavuzer4259d ago

I actually feel like Nintendo's put themselves in the poorest position possible. They'd probably have an alright time if they either went completely back to the core gamer or to the casual gamer. Instead they're kinda in the middle now...too expensive for most casuals to consider and too casual for core gamers to care.

Sgt_Slaughter4258d ago

They'll have a year head start on the other 2 so that's a huge advantage.

Ck1x4258d ago

I don't know about the to expensive thing because someone is definitely buying up all of these $350 pre-orders out here!

rainslacker4258d ago

I actually believe they're really pushing for the core gamer, especially at launch. It is a pretty impressive launch line-up. There are some casual games in there as well but core games make up a bulk of it. This of course depends on how you define core games.

I believe Nintendo knows they probably won't be able to rely on the sales from the casual market like with the Wii launch, just because the novelty factor isn't there for the Wii U.

Crazyglues4258d ago (Edited 4258d ago )

I was thinking the same thing... LoL

-but truth be told this is the worst time to launch a slightly better console then current gen.

Nothing against Wii U but it's coming in a really tough spot - one it's not that much better in performance then PS3 or X360 and by that I mean the games like Assassin III and Black ops 2 for example will not play or look any better on the system. (nothing more then a little sharper)

Not to mention it's own games like Zombie U are not really taking things to a new graphics level..

yes graphics are not everything but don't fool yourself they are still 75 percent of why most people decide to get a game..

Then there is the PS4 and X720 which are both right around the corner, now I don't know about you, but most people are not getting all 3 systems this time around.

Especially when nex gen could end up costing $600 to $700 for the new consoles..

So chances are most people will only buy one... no more owning all three systems this time around -some will but most people will only buy one.

So with the nex gen PS4 and X720 said to have avatar graphics, Wii U is going to be looking really out of date in just one year of owning it...

Nintendo is in a tough spot because the smart gamers are going to wait and the closer you get to PS4 and X720 the more the Wii U becomes an after thought..

In one years time a Wii U will be a dinosaur in the console world - that's terrible considering how much it cost. -Better to just save that money and put it on your PS4 or X720

ninjabake4258d ago

As far as Nintendo being in a tough spot I agree 100% but as far as the next Xbox/PS being lightyears ahead of it, boasting avatar graphics, I'm not so sure about that. We shall see most definitely when it comes to the capabilities of the next systems.

I do believe, however, the nextbox/ps4 will boast more capable graphics than the wii u but that's common tech sense(newer hardware, better visuals) but I don't believe the graphics will be darn-near CGI visuals and my reasoning for that is because if u look at the most advanced high-end graphics cards out right now, they don't look like they are on that level. And seeing as tho MS/Sony will be placing 2012 gpus in their next systems(at best) I don't see how it could completely crush the wii u visually.
Marginally, yes. Monumental? No.

As far as the article goes I do think the writer was a bit over-zealous but the term "better" is absolutely subjective there isn't a way you can prove that so I take it with a grain of salt. I do believe that the next Gen will be less about power and more about social integration and gameplay styles tho, and I don't think that's bad at all.

AO1JMM4258d ago

No because Wii was the best last gen.... insert sales numbers here: _______.

Kingnichendrix4258d ago

There are more sales of potato chips/crisps/fries a year than there are of fillet steak or sirloin that doesn't however mean it is better.

Darth_Bane794258d ago

It does mean however that out of the 3 console companies, Nintendo has been the most successful one as a business by a large margin. We may not like it, but the truth is that Nintendo has managed to be the oldest and most successful videogame company of all times. That's also why both Sony and Microsoft worked so hard to get into the motion market, to follow Nintendo's strategy.

extermin8or4258d ago

nope Darth_Bane - different business models, the wii hasn't' sold many games which is how the other 2 make their money; so more sales hasn't meant making more money necessarily

nirwanda4258d ago

@extermin8tor nintendo make plenty of money from first party software sales which is far more profitable than licenced software that sony and MS make their money from and the wii has made money on each console sale since launch

360ICE4258d ago

Yeah, or is it 2015? Even attempting an educated guess at this point seems pointless. No one has any idea what Sony or MS will dish up. I will say this though, that no matter how good or bad the Wii U is, it's likely to sell pretty well. Because of the Kentucky Fried North American marke we've all come to kinda dislike. And the EU market too, buys a lot before it thinks. Ditto the rest of the world. ...

geddesmond4258d ago

You gotta love braindead media. We don't know a thing about MS or Sonys next consol yet Wii U will be the best lol.

Spenok4258d ago

WTF? We know NOTHING about the new Sony and Microsoft systems.... not to mention if Apply (unlikely in my opinion) OR Steam systems (which has pretty much been confirmed as in development).

So tell me... how exactly is this the "best" next gen system?

dboyman4258d ago

@#1.1.10 Getowned. I feel the same way and plan to do a wait and see approach, especially waiting to see what Sony and MS does for next gen. I have limited $$ to spend, and have to be careful in my investments...

showtimefolks4258d ago

I swear these Nintendo fangirls are the worst. We don't even have wiiu out yet and don't know what MS and Sony will do so how did you figure wiiu to be the best?

Specs wise both won't and ms will out do it no doubt about it. And I think they are looking at wiiu price and saying we can get in on that range.

Nintendo has a hard road ahead because of their history with 3rd party and their lack of any talk about online services to play games. While both ms and Sony have established a great working online structure and can focus on improving the tech because games support will be there 3rd party.

Also to all Nintendo fangirls(y'all don't deserve to be called fanboys because Nintendo to be is about casual kids friendly) go back and look at wii launch lineup and you will see it had great games up front but than from 3rd party prospective that died out slowly. It had a Mario,Zelda and COD so let's not act like just because it has some games at launch that it will do great. Where is borderlands2?

I am excited about wiiu as much as the next guy but with Nintendo's history I may wat a year to see what the other 2have to offere before deciding which 2 home consoles I want to buy

colonel1794258d ago (Edited 4258d ago )

How can they say it will be the best, if we still don't know what the other consoles are going to be, and what they will have?

bigfish4258d ago

I fear that once the PS4 and XBOX 720 come out, all attention will be diverted away from the WiiU. I also fear that multi plat games like Call of Duty etc wont appear on the Wii U because of technical hardware limitations, I hope this is not the case.

fei-hung4258d ago

Dunno about 2006, but the main question is who are most of the people who bought the WiiU and will they be willing to buy a mature rated gaming console?

How many people owning a 360 or a PS3 will buy a WiiU based on whats been shown?

How well wil 3rd parties like PG and Ubisoft do with their more mature titles considering this en, the Wii had problems with 3rd party not due to lack of support from the big N but due to consumers not being interested in their games as much as Mario games and casual games.

Taking the abobe into consideration and then the unveiling of the next Sony and MS console, how will 3rd parties react as well as consumers.

Also, the Sony and MS consoles are becoming more and more devices which are there to take centre stage in your living room: movies, music, games and more. The WiiU still lacks in this department unfortunately with no BluRay or DVD support.

iamnsuperman4259d ago (Edited 4259d ago )

Bit early to say that......

I find the game thing interesting because Nintendo themselves have only really shown one game (by them) that is in a way more "mature". The list mentioned are all third party and mostly multiplatform and it would be stupid for a developer to ignore the new system.

sourav934258d ago

In the end, if it has fun and awesome games that I (a hardcore gamer) can enjoy, I'm all game. However, like everyone says, without word on the other 2 systems, their specs and their games, we won't know which will come out on top.

Darth_Bane794258d ago (Edited 4258d ago )

Everyone seems to forget that, although PS3 and x360 had the best graphics and equipment, Nintendo still owned the market for a long time, and even if we try to say that it doesn't matter because the quality is low or whatever, for Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo the most important thing is how much you sell, because if you don't sell then your product sucks no matter how good your graphics are or whatever. Wasn't that also the argument that x360 owners used to bash Ps3 players? Sales numbers? I don't know whats gonna happen here, but one thing is certain, Nintendo is the only videogame company in the world that has managed to stay alive and be succesful for so many years, so they must know what they are doing, because even Sony and Microsoft went as far as trying to compete on the motion capturing market to increase sales.

Abriael4259d ago

Probably means the best *last generation* console.

darthv724259d ago

arent we all gaming in last generation? by that im referring to d-pad and buttons. We may have evolved from 1 button to many but its still the same old same old.

It doent matter whats under the hood. Its the skills of the driver.

Xperia_ion4259d ago (Edited 4259d ago )

Ok the hype just got weird now : /

Kingnichendrix4258d ago

sorry I accidentally disagreed :(

tehpees34259d ago

We know nothing about the next Xbox and PS4 so its far too early to say yet.

zebramocha4259d ago (Edited 4259d ago )

Not entirely true, spec wise the ps4 nextbox 720 based of rumors are such.

Ps4:gpu a custom radeon Pitcairn gpu, high end powervr series 6,CPU: revised cell CPU,amd APu.

Nextbox 720: there hasn't been specific enough details regarding what will be in side but here's what I've read,a six core CPU and two GPUs or this one because Ms pulled this,a eight core arm CPU plus the 360 for backwards compatibility and radeon based gpu.

HammadTheBeast4259d ago

Rumors mean nothing at all.

zebramocha4259d ago (Edited 4259d ago )

People rumor spec of hardware all the time, some are true others bogus, if a rumor is not exaggerated it provides a baseline for what should be expected.

neogeo4258d ago

And if those rumors are true it APU's are still 10 times less powerful then modern PC cards and maybe only 10% more powerful then WiiU.
do you know there are $1200 graphics cards on the market right now? I'm not even talking about the rest of a PC I'm talking only about a card. So Sony and MS are stuck. If they want to make there system look noticeably WOW! better then WiiU expect $2999 USA dollars or they can match the WiiU price and make it 10% better.

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Inverno8d ago

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
