Although there’s many fans of both Sony and Microsoft‘s gaming systems, Nintendo has overall stayed on top over the years. Last year in the United States, for example, the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS sold around 9.59 million and 11.19 million in sales respectively according to a arstechnica.com article with data backed up from the NPD Group. Between both of their gaming systems, they got over 7 million more sales then the 3box 360, PlayStation 2/3, and PSP combined. While their sales are not as high, both Sony and Microsoft are very respectable gaming competitors with their own advantages. However, there’s a number of reasons why Nintendo is still on top; I’ll cover three of the more important factors that the other two members of the “Big 3” need to learn from if they want to take the top spot in the gaming world...
(Feel free to leave comments with what you think Sony and Microsoft should do to attract more of Nintendo’s gamers while keeping their own fanbase.)
Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."
The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.
Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.
A new survey from Microsoft has further hinted at the possibility of an Xbox handheld being in development.
This is definitely happening, I just hope they have 2 versions one with a much bigger screen.
i have that logitech g-cloud. Its a sweet little piece of kit. I like that it can also install games from the play store unlike the other android based handheld.
I wonder if Microsoft will perform better in Japan if they do actually make a handheld since everyone says handheld and mobile are king over there.
This looks like the future of the game industry... all three platforms with a handheld option.
I wonder if the Playstation Portal is a technology test-bed/prototype for a future Playstation handheld?
- Xbox Wire - Mark your calendars! The Xbox Games Showcase followed by [REDACTED] Direct airs June 9. More info inside.
For a brief moment I thought we might get a whole Direct for Gears 6 - seems like it's COD though!
Most games being family friendly would be bad. I don't play E games at all, not because I'm a bad ass, but because they are just so boring. A game doesn't have to be like Gears of War to be good, but most E games are so uninteresting. Sex, violence, and drug and alcohol use are part of life. I couldn't play Fallout if it was a post apocalyptic FarmVille. There should be family games available, but not most games.
There is nothing wrong with memorable characters, but Nintendo overuses them. I can't understand how people continuously eat that shit up. Many of Nintendo's characters aren't even interesting.
Price is not an issue as long as its reasonable. I'd rather have PS3's graphics and capabilities for the extra money.
Pretty much three ways to appeal to families.
Nitendo sells on there name alone they really don't have to try just put nitendo on the case it will sell.
There is a reason most of us on this board would consider the 360 or Ps3 our console of choice. I would not be pleased if MS or Sony gave up anything to become more Nintendo like.
Also Mario has been around a billion years. It's a little late to create a new "main" character.
I don't see it happening. Sony trust themselves and and so does Microsoft. They are doing moderately well right now.
