Why so original?

What do The Departed, Resistance 2, Michael Clayton and Gears of War 2 all have in common? Guns? Male leads? A certain darkness of tone?

Nope, nope and nope. The thing they all have in common is a lack of innovation, but is that such a bad thing? Something else they all have in common is consistent evidence of master craftsmanship, but when it comes to games, that particular element is often brushed over in favour of endless deconstructions of what a particular title does differently to its peers.

Is the author slating The Departed because they think it lacks innovation or because it's a remake of Infernal Affairs and they're pissed?

Dark_Overlord5624d ago

Probably because its a remake, it seems Hollywood at the minute is in a frenzy of remaking excellent Asian films into mediocre garbage, just look at 'the eye' and 'one missed call' for examples. Although I did prefer the Hollywood version of 'the ring'

Most people are happy to play the latest version of Madden or Fifa, or watch the sequel/prequel to last years blockbuster. It doesn't matter as long as the end product has been produced with care and attention to detail as often isn't the case.

I'm saying that the Departed is an awesome movie and that in spite of the fact that it is not innovative, it is still an excellent film, because it is expertly crafted. The point is, craft should be as important as innovation and that seems to be forgotten when it comes to gaming sometimes. Read the article and all will become clear.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.
