Konami didn’t make a Castlevania title for Sega’s Master System or Game Gear, so Sega decided to create their own vampire hunting game. Vampire: Master of Darkness puts players in the shoes of a psychologist named Dr. Ferdinand Social who uses a Ouija board to track down Dracula. Right, so you have a knife, a pistol, and bombs (garlic bombs?) you can use to kill floating masks and eventually the head vampire.
Nintendo Life: Given its gothic setting, focus on melee combat and inclusion of Dracula as the final boss, it’s little wonder that Vampire: Master of Darkness was compared to the famous Castlevania series when it launched on the Master System and Game Gear back in the early ‘90s. Developed by SIMS — which at the time was a second-party Sega studio — the game is a relatively shameless attempt to clone the winning formula of Konami’s legendary franchise which isn't as successful as it could have been, but remains reasonably compelling all the same.
More Sega Game Gear titles are headed to the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console in North America.
