Should Video Games be more like TV?

"It’s no secret that art is shifting towards a serial nature. One look at the current spectrum of pop culture ─ what with Walter White’s meth formula being more popular than international relations ─ will tell you that consumers revere serialized storytelling. Think about it: Arrested Development, lauded by many, was once removed from the artistic atmosphere. In 2013, it made its comeback on the internet, using a paid service supplemental to the TV package that most people already have, and yet it was still watched by many. People are willing to shell out extra bucks for continuity, and both TV and comic books have been taking advantage of this for years. So isn’t it about time video games start, as well?"

I don't think the article says "all" games should be serialized, but that it's a new medium for story-telling that games should exploit for their benefit. The Walking Dead is a great example of how to do it correctly, but I realize that not all games could even approach that level of intimate story-telling.

I suppose it's not just the story itself, but also the people developing the story. I wouldn't want someone like George Martin to serialize a story (it would take forever to finish), but an author like Neil Gaiman could do it well. Off the top of my head, only a few videogame writers might be able to do it well.

I think TWD perfectly illustrates the problem. Its by far one of the best games I've ever played, yet the episodic nature held it back. Every episode was delayed, and I don't think making it episodic produced any benefits.

Braid3951d ago

If we're talking about episodic games like Telltale's Walking Dead which is divided into seasons and episodes, or TV-ish crime dramas like L.A. Noire or even thrillers like Alan Wake (and the upcoming Quantum Break) yeah, I'd love to see more games like that. I'm a sucker for movies and games so that's the perfect combination for me. Movie tie-ins however, are not usually how we expect them to be in terms of overall quality. Official movie games suffer the same fate in most instances.

Speaking of which, I'd love to see what Del Toro's Insane would look like. Too bad it got canceled.

I don't want to see episodic games, there's too much of a chance for games to get cancelled halfway through. A game like Beyond Good and Evil might have only made it halfway before being canned, and I think many could agree the last thing the industry needs is more incomplete games. I could see some potential for indie games, or maybe as episodic DLC but not for regular releases

No. What happens if the game underperforms halfway through the season? What if someone pulls a Sarah Conner Cronicles and ends too soon, leaving fans wondering wtf will happen next....for ever.

With a full $60, I get everything I need from the game without waiting or worrying about a loss of funds or some other calamity.

Also, I couldn't imaging getting to winter in the Last of Us, and reading a "coming next month" notice at the end. ND would have a riot on their hands.

And comics are a bad example. A ton of people simply wait for TPs. I do it all the time for series that can wait like the many offshoots of Xmen or Avengers, or Justice League Dark...

WeAreLegion3951d ago

No. I don't see them as a tv show. Maybe a movie...

The Last Of Us Series Has Remarkable Potential For Spin-Offs

Najam from eXputer writes "It's time fore a new installment in the series, not another pointless remaster."

anast84d ago

They are working on something new. Not to be rude but it is impossibility stupid to think ND next major announcement is going to be a remaster or their next Last of Us entry is going to be another remaster.

AlterRecs81d ago

I think this is in response to them releasing a remaster for the sequel, a game that didn't need a remaster.

Basically a "why did you put out a remaster no one asked for when you have all there options available"

anast81d ago

They remaster is to put out something quick while they are deving new stuff. I don't get how people can be so static.

AlterRecs80d ago

There's no news about a third game being in production, you're just assuming that they're working on something that they aren't

anast80d ago

When they release the news to start the hype-train, you can give me my props then.

DrDoomer84d ago

I want an alternate timeline spin-off, where part 2 never happened.

CrimsonWing6984d ago

They’ve already done Remasters of 1 and 2… what else is there to Remaster?

AlterRecs81d ago

Considering they remastered the first game twice, who knows lol

CrimsonWing6981d ago

That was a Remake. I guess they could do that to 2, but man…. They should wait a couple generations so it can look like a major upgrade.

The Last Of Us Online Devs Celebrate Their Experience With The Canceled Game

The team is sad for losing out on such a great project but celebrates its growth because of spending time on it.

Chocoburger129d ago

All they had to do was make a basic online mode like their previous games. Instead they wanted more money and choose to go live service which makes games worse in my opinion.

What a waste of time and money, what a shame.

seanpitt2384d ago

I can't wait for season 2 so they can kill Joel off in the first 2 episodes!! Then it will be just Abby and Ellies revenge plot!

Something is telling me that this won't happen though because it wouldn't make sense, oh wait

Linzoid128d ago

Not sure why they didn’t just make Factions 2. There was no need to make it a live service.

TLoU Factions was a great addition such a shame they couldn’t be bothered to remaster that for PS5 considering the crazy high price tag of the remaster of a remaster…

anast128d ago

This is something to be celebrated. This studio is smart and they get it, even factions 2 wouldn't've have been worth the time. I am surprised they didn't just remaster the first one though, but actually how popular was Factions?
