21 Days Without Internet, The Effects On Gaming

IM PLAYIN's KailIos discusses the woes of not having an internet connection, and how that affected his gaming habits.

"I love gaming, something that isn’t exactly a surprise considering you’re reading a piece from a gaming driven website. So when I moved to my new place, I guessed it would have a delay on having access to certain privileges. Although I wasn’t anticipating missing out on the most important thing to basically most people now a days. You guessed it, the internet. Little did I know that the new place would mean not having internet for a whole 21 days. Not knowing might have actually helped because I had no time to actually prepare. I’ll admit, I did have internet at work, so I could at least keep up to date on the goings on from a computer, but not having it in the shelter of your own home is something else. Especially on those days where all you want to do is come back and kick some person’s ass online."

When i had to move to the new house , i didnt have the internet for a month and i had dark souls , all i heard it was harddddd :) but what made it classic to me was after i defeated the gargoyle before the bell and then rang the bell , i didnt know what to do next , i kept going back and forth everywhere until i knew where should i go , it was an awesome feeling , i felt i was playing a good old school game . Now everything is on the internet and you never get stuck :( ...

It's hard not seeking clues once you're stuck.

Completing games on ones owns merits without help or having your hand held throughout a game feels great. I dont even like having maps with waypoints. It makes exploring useless. Exploring used to also mean finding the correct way to go. Now its just avoiding the right way because you know where it is.

I'm torn on this. I hate it when games make you afraid to go the right way because it prevents you from going back and exploring the parts you missed. It happens more so in linear games.

Two paths. If I choose the wrong one (i.e. the right way to progress) I'm screwed and can't go back usually.

At least it wasn't...28 days later...
Ok I admit that was bad, but I couldn't resist...

I preferred the days of gaming where......

You went into a shop and you looked around. You saw a game you were interested in, you looked at the cover and the back cover, you bought it and you went home and played it. You discovered things on your own. Of course there were magazines around but for the most part you didn't let the internet decide what you liked and disliked.

Those were simpler times, for me atleast, during the ps2/Xbox/Gamecube era. I would even go back to the PS/N64 Era. Things are just in a sad state now. I like the internet for the news, but EVERYTHING IS CONSIDERED NEWS NOW, even someones feelings and why they sold console Y and went to console X.

The internet is the most powerful information medium we have, that is why governments want to control it so badly (propaganda is strong) but it has really put a damper on my used to be favorite past time.

I haven't had internet for months, but my neighbors have wifi. Not strong enough signal for me to game with, but good enough to check up on N4G everyday (:

Offline gaming since May /:
