Will The (Next Xbox) Be Cheaper Than The PS4? Most Likely.

We Give Our Two Cents On If The Next Generation X-Box Console Will Be Cheaper Than The Playstation 4.

Doing a little bit of overtime writing. I figured I would share my views on why Microsoft will most certainly be cheaper with their brand new console than SONY will be with the Playstation 4. Why this topic you ask? Well to be frank , as I currently work within the retail industry I'm sick to death of customers constantly checking on whether or not we have a price for either console yet. Hell I don't even know what to say to people who claim "The XBOX '720' will WRECK the PS4 'snort"

But I do honestly believe that the new Xbox console will retail at a cheaper price tag than the super powered Playstation 4, and here's why.

we all find out e3, but i can see this happening. all i know is i will wait before i ever buy a microsoft console at launch again because my previous experience with the 360. so ill get a ps4 first(at launch ) and see how good the hardware from microsoft is.

sengoku4034d ago (Edited 4034d ago )

M$ might be cheaper but no more than $50
so i don't think there much of a difference.
as for sony operating in the red and could not take a loss.
i think you'd be surprised. they will sell PS4 at a loss no doubt.

Yi-Long4034d ago (Edited 4034d ago )

... MS has shown it's true face this generation, and especially the last few years, and Sony has really stepped up the last few years and looked after MY interest as a GAMER, by focussing on GAMES, instead of on motion-gaming and dashboard apps.

I started out this generation as big fan of the 360, after having loved my original Xbox. I never owned a PS1 or PS2 before.

In the beginning, there was MUCH to love about the 360, but I guess somewhere halfway through this generation, Microsoft decided it wanted to appeal to a different kind of audience, and kinda lost track of the fact that many people like me bought a 360 as a GAMES-console.

Not to mention the whole 'paying to play online' thing.

The last few years, the only really GREAT thing about owning a 360, were the EXCELLENT releases on XBLA, but I expect that next-gen, more and more indie-developers will leave MS and opt for Android instead. More freedom, lower cost, more input after the release when it comes to patches and price.

(I would have mentioned Forza 4 and Horizons as great exclusives, but I haven't bothered picking them up, because of all the greedy DLC...)

Nope, Microsoft has really lost my interest. I was theirs and they neglected me, and we grew apart, and Sony was there to catch me.

Next-gen, I'll be getting a PS4, and most likely a Steam-box.

user76939584034d ago

it will ship with kinect right? and the lower specs are to balance the price with the kinect and make it even to the PS4 price..

I don't believe it.. but may have a very basic console with no kinect and very low hard drive at a cheaper price.

@ yi-long

dude you speak the truth for anyone that had original xbox an 360. this is what happen it's the TRUTH now you lames or sheep can disagree

Microsoft whole attitude change

when sony was on top they were the same

sony's Ken Kutaragi "if gamer's want a ps3 they need to work more hours "
told people to get a second job... do you forget so easily.

real cocky just like most of the executive at these game companies till they see numbers drop then they become our best friend again

it's microsoft turn.... they will learn to respect the gamers that keep their pockets lined with gold

nintendo is feeling it too gamers wont be blinded for to long you just can't put anything out an not expect some of the sheep not to wake up

It will be but both will b affordable. I really think that the ps4 will be the hardcore fans choice but the xbox will grab many casual gamers and kids. Xbox is looking to be an entertainment device and I am sure they r banking on the fact that many gamers may buy the ps4 first but with a good pricepoint will ultimately buy an xbox too.

Just like this gen, the ps4 will have tons of exclusives etc. But the xboxs online and multitasking features will be awesome and very appealing to tech nerds. The desktop pc is a dying entity and microsoft maked most of its money there so it has to make a move on the future. Apple and Google have failed, basically in selling their aTV boxes. Microsoft will succeed.

FITgamer4034d ago

I agree ive owned every major console since NES, and the 360 is the only console that has failed on me (barely made it 2 years). If the Nextbox isn't always-online and has some decent exclusives i'll consider buying it in the future.

VINNIEPAZ4034d ago

I've own most systems too. U mean to tell me you never had a PS1 or dreamcast die on you? Even a DRE problem on a PS2? You must be very lucky if your Xbox is the only thing to die in your gaming days

Blaze9294034d ago (Edited 4034d ago )

clearly, he's talking nonsense. Not even the most gullible would believe of every major console since NES, the 360 was his only "faulty" system. Luck aint even got anything to do with that.

NukaCola4034d ago (Edited 4034d ago )

The most durable and longest lasting system I own is the Xbox. The cheapest and most broken system I own is the Xbox 360. I don't know why they made such an awesome console last gen but a hunk of of junj with problems this one.

Godchild10204034d ago (Edited 4034d ago )

@Vinniepaz and Blaze929, I have a Super Nintendo, Sega genesis, Dreamcast, N64, PS1, PS1 Slim, PS2, PS2 Slim, PS3 Phat, PS3 Slim, PS3 Super Slim, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox 360s, Wii, Wii U, DS, 3DS, PSP and a Vita and the only system that I have had that have broke on me was the 360 white version.

I take care of my consoles; Clean them once a week and to this day can play everyone of them. I may have to blow into the cartridge to play my Super Nintendo or my N64, but that's normal for those that had one back in the day.

Darrius Cole4034d ago

He is probably not talking nonsense. Of all the consoles I've owned or known owned others to own the Xbox 360 is the only one the I've known to fail. All my friend have had a 360 to die at least once. Strangely my 360 has lasted four years. I'm the only one never to have a 360 to die.

FITgamer4034d ago

@VINNIEPAZ I actually haven't. Only handelds, a few gameboys and 2 psp. That's not because they were designed poorly, but because i dropped them or spilled a drink on them. I've always done regular maintenance on my systems and never did stupid things like placing them on top of other electronics or on the carpet.

@tentonsoftube - It's pretty safe to assume the hardware of the next Xbox will be stable at launch. All eyes will be on them and they can't afford to have another "RROD" scandal.

@FITgamer - You never owned a PS1? It was impossible to have one of those for more than 3 years without having to turn it upside down in order to work.

AceofStaves4034d ago

I bought my PS1 in 1997, and I've never had a problem with it since then. It still works as it did back then. I've certainly never had to turn it upside down to get it to work.

My launch-model PS2 has only had a couple of DRE errors, and those related to movies not games. It's starting to show it's age, but it's still chugging along after all these years.

I guess it comes down to how people use their consoles.

Blaze9294034d ago (Edited 4034d ago )

It's a Sony product holding the SONY brand name. Sony's always been an almost, exclusive kind of brand with their products hence the pricing behind them. Computers, music players, televisions, media players, cameras, etc. You truly do get what you pay for, some good ass reliable hardware.

except for when those batteries were blowing up in Vaio laptops...but other than that!

I don't doubt for a second the next Xbox will be cheaper than the PS4.

I wouldn't be surprised if like now, Microsoft continues to offer the subscription based style of paying off the hardware. Purchase up front for maybe $99, $199 and pay the rest off in installments.

I wonder how that is currently working for them though. That and HOW does it work? Sounds pretty much like a credit card for one purpose. So would people need good credit?

andrewsqual4034d ago (Edited 4034d ago )

HIGHLY likely. Will it have over priced accessories and subscriptions that practically everybody needs to add another 150 quid to the price tag?
100% guaranteed.
@joab777 Lol and yet every body I know who loves their Xbox has a PS3 too for the exclusives and a Netflix and bluray player. Anybody who loves the PS3 first has no need for an Xbox 360. You got that completely the wrong way around.

OrbitalBT4034d ago

My answer is most likely not.

they already have a console that's $300 dollars cheaper. it supports HDMI and has built in WIFI. for a $99 dollar console it's pretty sufficient and up to date for current TVs.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4034d ago (Edited 4034d ago )

"Will The (Next Xbox) Be Cheaper Than The PS4? Most Likely."

Just like 360! Less AAA exclusive games to buy!

Look at ps3! Just playin Ni No Kuni then The last of us and Beyond coming so 360 fans are lucky they can keep their money. Nothing new there.

Sounds like trolling I know. But at least I didn't lie.

Ausbo4033d ago

xbox 720- $400 and $450
Ps4- $450 and $500

lilbrat234033d ago

Great another persons two cents! I think we are about at 62 cent now and its all about as useless as 62 cent, lol.

LOGICWINS4034d ago

No, I don't think so. Unless Sony's being run by chimpanzees and walruses, I'm sure they realize that one of the reasons the 360 was so successful last gen was because Microsoft gave consumers OPTIONS($199 Arcade model, $299 Pro model etc.) Sony won't make the same mistake this gen. Count on it.

Knight_Crawler4034d ago (Edited 4034d ago )

I understand what you are saying but maybe selling the PS4 at a loss at launch is not an option for Sony because they cannot afford it being that financially the company has been in the red for a long time.

MS on the other hand can afford to sell the 720 at a loss so I can see them trying to make the 720 $100 or more cheaper than the PS4 and dont care if they are taken a loss on every console sold as long as they get 720's in peoples homes and get them to subscribe to Live, which is MS cash cow and if rumors are true about the 720 being an all in one machine then Live will be a huge part of MS revenue next gen

I know you will come back with some good argument as to why I am wrong and you are right but I just want to express that both companies are in different circumstances financially and I dont see MS being ok with the PS4 being cheaper.

@Munky - Depends on which rumors you want to believe - I saw rumors anbout the being a beast and having two APU's.

@Godmars - "You cab be certain" last I heard we know nothing about the 720 and people are just following rumors.

@Software - I like big booty girls too.

@Andreas - Well said BUBBLES!

@Statix - You are forgetting that the PS4 will also have a Kinect like camera that is needed for the DS4 controller to work so more than likely it will be included with the PS4.

@Green Ranger - The Black Ranger rules and I will also own both consoles.

Outside_ofthe_Box4034d ago

The only way I see the 720 being cheaper than the PS4 is if you count the subscription model. Other than that I actually expect them to be the price. I believe Sony will match the Wii U price like they did the 3DS with the Vita.

So I'm expecting $300 or $350 for the cheapest PS4 model. Same for the 720 as well as rumors have been saying $300 for the 720 for a while now.

Statix4034d ago (Edited 4034d ago )

Every single Playstation console has been sold at a loss, at launch, so I don't see that changing this time around.

I could, however, see the margins being closer than before (unlike the PS3, which saw the console being sold at a massive loss), but that would be more of a statement on the state of the economy as a whole, and also the fact that x86 components would be cheaper to manufacture than more exotic processors.

Thus, selling at a loss, particularly if it's not a huge loss, wouldn't financially be a problem for Sony. They would likely recoup any losses incurred by the sale of a system just with the purchase of a couple PS4 games.

One fact that some gamers tend to forget is that Microsoft is in the business of making money as well. They won't severely under-price something and potentially lose massive amounts of money just for the sake of it--they'll do what is the best business decision for them. There's a reason that Xbox Live isn't free, and that they're considering banning used games--because Microsoft, like every other company, loves money. Don't expect them to do gamers any favors that fly in the face of profitability.

avengers19784034d ago

At first 360 console was cheaper then PS3, but I think now there about even. 360 needed a wifi add on and a hd DVD add on( witch was a complete waste of money to those who purchased one considering hddvd lost out to blu-ray) to make it on par with what PS3 had already in it. Lets also not forget that the first PS3's were B/C

Godmars2904034d ago

I'm "certain" because they advertise the 360 starting at $99 yet don't mention XBL Gold or the cost of their HDD.

humbleopinion4033d ago

Live Gold WAS MS cash cow, but I highly doubt about the future: When Xbox 360 came out there was no other console to compete with it's online, and it took the PS3 a few years to even get close. So people got used to paying money for online, and eventually they had all their friends there and so they didn't want to jump ship.

But this time things are different: Sony came prepared, and they are not charging for online gaming. If Microsoft doesn't offer free online gaming people will do the math and simply not bother with their service and console: just like what happened when MS tried to charge for GFWL gold and because of that the service never took off even after they dropped it. Let's hope they learned from that mistake...

MikeMyers4034d ago (Edited 4034d ago )

If Microsoft is smart (many times I question that) they will come out with a $199 system that has a subscription model built in. A 3 year term that gives consumers Xbox Live Gold as well as paying off the system. I would think a $9.99 a month would suffice. That's $550 in the end and likely apply to the cheaper model. I expect both Sony and Microsoft to offer two variations, the cheaper being $349-$399 and the other priced at $449-$499.

Sony won't want to out-price itself again early on. They need the PS4 do well out of the gate. Not a slow growth we seen on Vita. Microsoft can afford to take a bigger hit, Sony can't. That means anything over $499 will be hard to sell quickly. Microsoft is very likely to be making partnership deals with cable suppliers that can also offset the hardware costs for a subscription based model.

LOGICWINS4034d ago

Doing that would be extremely intelligent on Microsoft's part. Sony would be foolish not to do something similar with PS Plus.

DragonKnight4034d ago

Yeah, I seriously doubt that it will be either. I mean if the "cable box" plans are true, then the total cost of owning a NextBox would probably be far more than the PS4 I think. Remember, if the rumours are true, MS don't want just a games console. They want a multimedia center in a box that can also have the 360 attached. All of these plans cost money, and the consumer is going to have to pay for it.

k2d4034d ago (Edited 4034d ago )

New xbox shipped with kinect 2.0 in the box? I would'nt count on it being cheaper than the PS4.

Unless we se something along the same lines of the first 360 builds.

andrewsqual4034d ago

Options that everybody requires. (Of course for all us intelligent people here I don't mean that they really do need it. I'm talking about the donkey masses that THINK they need this stuff like the idiots that think their controller and console network connection HAS to be wireless and thus, throw down 90 quid for a wireless adapter because the asshole retail staff tells them they NEED this)

MagneticDeath24034d ago

I think nextbox will be cheaper at first but then add the price of live to it and it will cost over double what a PS4 will cost.

LOGICWINS4034d ago

The same can be said for cellphone and cable subscriptions. Millions of people are happy to pay these expenses. Why wouldn't it work with the next Xbox considering it will double as a cable box?

violents4033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

I agree wholeheartedly, the facts alone will tell you the same. The whole reason they are going with the AMD hardware is for the fact that it is relatively inexpensive tech that's right off the shelf, that is known to work great, that everyone already knows how to program for. Devs are happy with the ease of programming and that should lead to lower production costs, consumers should be happy with a lower buy in price and a plentiful bounty of great games. Everybody wins this gen!

Edit: Also with more inexpensive hardware, they might not have to sell at a loss and still be able to give consumers a good deal.

Munky4034d ago

Well... If all the rumors are true and the console is as severely under powered then the PS4, it would make sense that the Nextbox would come at a much cheaper price point.

kneon4034d ago

But there are other rumors saying it will be more powerful and have backwards compatibility. If this rumor is the one that is correct then it will almost certainly be more expensive.

Munky4034d ago

Butttt that would mean that the Nextbox will be more powerful and have BC. That can't possibly happen... especially on N4G.

Darrius Cole4034d ago

Xbox 1 was more powerful. So it is possible.

kneon4034d ago

@Munky

Sure it can happen, just don't expect it to be cheap if it does.

But I'm skeptical of that rumor unless the rumor about the Xbox mini is also true. Microsoft will want to hang on the casual customers they've attracted and they will lose them if the don't have a cheap box for that market.

T24033d ago

Whhat 360 games would I even want to play if it was bc ?

JamieL4033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

How could anyone but you know that, but if I had to guess you'd like Disney Sing It, Fairytale Fights, Hannah Montana: The Movie, My Horse & Me 2, and Get Fit With Mel B, seen right up your ally.

T24029d ago

@JamieL - wow thats hilarious but the irony is I didn't even know such games exist but you sure do... even so BC is overrrated , new games are where its at, just play the others on the web or pc

Godmars2904034d ago

Microsoft Closes Redfall Developer Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush Developer Tango Gameworks, and More

Microsoft has closed a number of Bethesda studios, including Redfall maker Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks, and more in devastating cuts at Bethesda, IGN can confirm.

Moegooner6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Hi-Fi Rush studio??? Seriously?? Goes to show quality matters lil to MS.

Worst gen ever. All big 3 battling are for who sucks the most. They just keep one upping one another.

-Foxtrot6h ago

This does feel like a “quick Sony is getting shit on for Helldivers, let’s announce it now to minimise impact”

thesoftware7306h ago

That is silly. Let's say there is some weird conspiracy. This announcement would effectively take ALL the attention away from the HD2 situation, especially since there is no longer an HD2 situation. I don't think anything will minimize this impact.

Tacoboto6h ago

... so they announce it on a Tuesday? 36 hours after Sony cleared up everything?

You people care more about the next conspiracy than anything else.

Nevermind that Sony followed the golden rule of minimizing impact by announcing horrible news on a Friday.

Eonjay6h ago

The constant weekly weird Sony drama is part of the industry's problem. Everyone else feels they can get away with murder. Also, what is the point of spending all that money if you just start shutting studios down. And... Redfall wasn't Arkane's fought. Microsoft new the shape the game was in but needed something for GamePass after a whole year of no releases into the service. Them taking it out on Arkane seems really disingenuous and distasteful. And WTF did Tango do? Didn't Todd just release a statement saying how he would never retire. Fire his ass.

romulus236h ago

Well if that was the reason for the timing it didn't work.

darthv725h ago

wow... i did not have them closing Tango and Arkane Austin on my bingo card.

Hofstaderman5h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Yes it does. Arkane Austin I can understand but Tango Gameworks made an excellent game in Hi Fi Rush.
On review, it want really all on Austin for Redfall and its failure, they were forced to make a multiplayer games when their expertise was always single player driven first person games.

-Foxtrot4h ago

Guys I’m not being all that serious…relax

Outside_ofthe_Box4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

"I don't think anything will minimize this impact."

It already has. Notice your comment(or lack there of) vs HD2.

On another note, I would like to see Microsoft buy more studios and do more shadows drops on subscription services like they did Hi-Fi Rush. It's great for the industry I was told by people on here.

Zeref2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

I'm pretty sure that's exactly how it works. Same thing with layoffs. All of a sudden everyone has layoffs around the same time

Cacabunga1h ago

MS will always make it to amaze me by showing the worse version of themselves every single time..

peppeaccardo1h ago

MS proving to the world that ttheir leadership cannot drive success from these new acquisitions. They have ran the numbers and they have realized that long term, without a clear direction from the motehrship, these are a loss for the company hence they need to be cut. I might be wrong but I am absolutelly sure that if these developers would have not been purchased by Microsoft they would be still on business. A shame ...

Einhander19726h ago(Edited 6h ago)

10/10 deflection, the ol' Sony too deflect...

Let's not discuss the fact that PlayStations struggles have largely been caused by the fact that game pass has reshaped how consumers spend causing them to spend less as they play what is on subscriptions and don't buy games as much because they either have become subscription gamers or they fear the game will come to a subscription so they don't buy things.

And it's not just PlayStation, the whole industry has been effected, many big studios are struggling across the board to match sales targets from pre-game pass releases which is especially apparent in things like sequels.

Heck the best example was Microsoft's own Starfield which should have easily blasted past 10m sales by the end of 2023 going by sales of similar Bethesda games yet was only able to achieve 3m which of course was almost entirely on Steam.

Moegooner6h ago

Or maybe it's because Sony hasn't released multiple worthwhile SP games like they normally do each gen and the ones they did released actually sold well.

Layoffs aren't because studios are struggling, but because major publishers want to maximise profit gains.

Profchaos6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Absolutely it's a service that's changed the way we view and consume games overall for the worse games have little value when they are part of a sub and become disposable doubly so if they are a day 1 freebie often it's the kiss of death for a game to be day 1 on gamepass as PlayStation players look at it like why do I have to pay 60 dollars for back 4 blood, payday 3 or outriders it'll be on PS plus soon enough and funny enough those games always fail to meet expectations sales are poor and longevity is poor.

When I see a game get a day 1 tag outside of first party my first thought is always something is wrong with it and it can't stand on its own feet so the publisher has made a deal to recoup development cost.

Even first party games have dropped in quality noticeably so since gamepass with gears 5 being the only good release I can think of since gamepass started

Petebloodyonion5h ago

Wasn't aware that Gamepass is available on PlayStation.
Or are you telling us that a service from a console lacking in sales is so great that it affects the morale and buying habits of ppl lacking access to the service?

Also pretty sure that saying all of them competing for who sucks means the whole industry and not just Sony and MS.

Nitrowolf25h ago(Edited 5h ago)

This is what people online want. They just don't know or understand it. So many have warned about consolidation, and exactly what they have fear has been happening

This isn't the end, expect more bought out studios to be closed in the next few years

Hofstaderman5h ago

Spot on. All in the name "growth" to appease investors and shareholders. Can't sustain the lie though...it will always implode as illustrated by these closures. Applies to MS and Embracer.

notachance5h ago

I just don’t know how the hell a company that can spend $67b to purchase a publisher decided that it’s okay to close the studio that produces their best game last year.

Whoever the higher up there that decides this is completely out of touch of how the game industry works, the damn xbox division as a whole would’ve been closed already if they weren’t sustained by other MS divisions.

shinoff21835h ago

I got in an argument with someone on reddit and they weren't haven't that Xbox isn't propped up by other divisions argument. They swore up and down that Xbox was pulling its own weight. I just stopped after a couple back and forths

dumahim5h ago

So this is what happens when you're pleased with the sales and investing in the studio? Good guy Phil at it again.

Sonic18814h ago(Edited 4h ago)

From Aaron Greenburg:

"Hi-Fi RUSH was a break out hit for us and our players in all key measurements and expectations. We couldn’t be happier with what the team at Tango Gameworks delivered with this surprise release."

😂😂😂 🤥🤥

Lightning773h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Once again MS creates their own problems and they create their own animosity. Idc about their shitty excuse and "reasons" they're a incompetent company, plus all their Xbox fanboy influencers are dwindling I noticed. How many excuses can you make for a company like MS? Consoles are down and they're losing their own fanboy influencers also. That's all they had to cheer lead them now they're leaving them. Pretty nobody will be on MS dude no matter if they (if they ever but I doubt it) get their act together.

Trashy ass ppl and company....

If they go under eventual it's because of their own doing nobody else's.

porkChop1h ago

Yeah overall this gen is pretty shit. Everyone is making horrible decisions, great devs are getting either gutted or entirely shut down regardless of quality or success, very little in the way of innovative games, etc. This industry needs to see some drastic changes.

No one wants to admit it, but yeah MS has a long history of pillaging other smaller corporations for IP and dispensing with everything else.

That doesn't make any sense lol. How would they make money from these IP'S with no developers?

MrDead1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

@Zeref
"That doesn't make any sense lol. How would they make money from these IP'S with no developers?"

MS don't care about the studios, they want the IP's. They'll keep the big ones in house, the game engines they run on and licence the rest. Stacks of cash to be made from licensing IP's ...or just sit on them so no one else can use them.

Einhander19726h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Well xbox fans you got what you asked for... and honestly deserved...

It was so easily predictable that game pass was never going to be able to support all these studios.

If Microsoft can't win they are going to burn it all to the ground...

Countdown to Phil Spencer telling us "it's better for the gamers this way" yet again.

Barlos5h ago

Agree but gamers didn't ask for people to be out of work.

VenomUK4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

@Barlos They indirectly did. Every person who made a wish list of who Microsoft should buy next and were sending tweets to Phil Spencer and Xbox with proposed studios, played a part.

The saddest part is the studios were closed because of the underperformance of their last games, and if they had been given a chance then their next games could’ve been great and succeeded. But it is the same old Phil Spencer Microsoft problem which is not giving them a chance, and that’s why he is not able to manage game studios.

VariantAEC4h ago

Yeah they did. Just because they refused to see what everyone with a brain was telling them doesn't mean they didn't know. They were told, they should've put up a fight and they didn't. This is the result. But who knows even if MS' fans weren't such boot-lickers, MS could've carried this out against their fans wishes anyway. Unfortunately, we have the hardcore MS defense bots running to deflect from any bad news and maybe, just maybe, MS felt empowered to do more damage as a result of their fans cheering this all on.

anast3h ago

They sold themselves out. Once people buy you they can do what they want. None of this should have been a surprise. When companies get bought out, they eventually get dismantled.

shinoff21835h ago

Xbox fans were to busy daydreaming of Ms curbstopping Sony they didn't look at the big picture.

Einhander19724h ago

Not disagreeing at all.

I want to add that from the day Microsoft announced game pass, before they even started buying up studios it was obvious that game pass wasn't going to be able to support itself.

It was so dumb that they doubled down on it by spending 100B on a service they knew only existed through subsidization.

They should have realized there was no way that adding massively more costs on a subscription they were subsidizing was certain to fail. Especially after seeing how it had devastated sales across the platform as a whole.

Heck by the time this generation started during covid when the console sales were similar PlayStation was already outselling xbox on multiplatform games 8:1 yet they still doubled down on it.

Relientk776h ago

This is beyond wrong. Like wtf!? Especially Tango Gameworks with Hi-Fi Rush. I've heard nothing but good things about that game. Just because Arkane Austin screwed up one game release doesn't mean you need to close them. It sounds like they were forced to do a multiplayer game when they're a single player studio. They could have made a Prey 2 or some other game next.

Just wow awful news.

Einhander19726h ago

Apparently PlayStation owners didn't buy enough copies of Hi-Fi Rush...

romulus235h ago

"Xbox says Hi-Fi Rush was a success "in all key measurements" amid rumors of poor sales. Following rumors that Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fish Rush didn't meet sales expectations, Xbox marketing VP Aaron Greenburg is defending the "break out hit" as a success by all metrics."

According to Aaron Greenburg it was a success so they shouldn't have even needed PlayStation owners to buy it. That being said, I bought it and really enjoyed it, it's a great game. Shame MS closed them down.

RpgSama5h ago

@Romulus23

All lies by the Green Bug, that just means that a lot of people fired bullets or whatever in the game, that's the key measurements they care to share.

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game.

Crows905h ago

That's usually what happens when you don't release it at the same time as other platforms....same thing happened with tomb raider reboot sequel. MS got exclusivity for a year and then when it came to PlayStation it barely sold. Nobody cared anymore.

shinoff21835h ago

Still waiting on the physical release pre order window

VariantAEC4h ago

Well... I did my part. Hi-Fi Rush is a good game, but I don't think its MS' style. We don't really know how well it did or didn't perform by the numbers or whether it broke even. This could just be another MS blunder.

Elda2h ago

Exactly. MS purchasing a 3rd party studio & keeping games off of other platforms probably hurt them in the long run, then finally putting Hi Fi Rush on PS which in turn PS fans probably didn't care to buy & support Hi Fi Rush after a year later of release. Hi Fi Rush was released on Gamepass so it probably never really made any money selling solely.

Eonjay2h ago

@romulus23

Let's hope it didn't sell well because that would make this worse. Also I could have sworn I read an article about their next game in the works.

Seraphim27m ago(Edited 21m ago)

I was wondering if that played any part considering the timing, though, XB claimed the game to be a success last year only on XB & PC. Regardless MS f'd up there too. They shadow dropped HiFi on XB/PC last year at the perfect time. This year when they released on PS not only had the hype died, but there were so many solid games available the first 3 months of this year to play.

I almost bought it on PC last year, but now that it dropped on PS I just have far too many games to play to bother...

If MS needs PS and even Switch sales they need a better strategy. At the very least a release date where players are more inticed to buy said game. The problem is always going to be that if they want exclusives the hype for these games will be dead a year later. The exceptions might be some of their heavy hitters.... 2 cents

I can only imagine the little amount of revenue both games generated, sent straight to gamepass and excluded from the largest current gen console userbase. Not to say both games would have done well if they were on PS5 too, but you heavily damage to a games revenue when you put it on a stagnating sub service for a poorly selling console, can't really see people going out in droves to sub to GP to play this.

shinoff21835h ago

Gamepass subs(most of Xbox players) don't buy games all like that so it's not sustainable. It's reality.

RaidenBlack6h ago

Yea Austin made one of the most creative game of last gen with Prey and were forced to take risk with Redfall and now the whole studio is being closed.

Aphrodia5h ago

Yes, that Tango gameworks/ Hi-Fi closure was an eye opener for me as well. Neither played it nor was interested in it myself but all I heard was everyone acting like it was the second coming of guitar hero or something.

I don't know what else to say other than modern gaming is an overwhelming sea of mediocrity and there's not enough voices of reason speaking up and saying that most games made these days are just not very good.

shinoff21835h ago

Your playing the wrong games then. There's always been shovelware type games. Going back to wii, snes, nes, ps1 Xbox og. That's a bs blanket statement. As an older gamer since atari days I'd personally say this is a great time. If you can't find anything to play. That's on you

With all that said in no way or form am I speaking of multi-player games, gacha, or whatever. I'm strictly speaking on single player games.

Aphrodia2h ago

you are hilarious. trying to validate your comment by excluding over half of the games out there today. Pathetic man.

Neonridr4h ago

I'm more devastated at the loss of The Evil Within.

Can't wait to see the usual try spin and play this down. So much for the heroic MS and Phil saving these studios eh.

Eonjay6h ago

By the end of the day IGN will be talking about how this is right for the industry. Don't worry, Microsoft's PR is making the call now.

RpgSama5h ago

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game, and I'm sure Arkhane failed just because they were both rushed and pressured into making a GaaS game they had no experience in doing and no support to get it completed out of the gate.

PrinceOfAnger6h ago

Not a big deal only hi fi rush was good

Sony has closed
Manchester studio
Japan studio
Pixel opus
London studio
Ready At Dawn ...

RupeeHoarder6h ago

The difference being Sony has a large group of other studios that have done something positive. Microsoft just closed the studio to the only good game they released in the past year (Hi-Fi Rush).

CrashMania5h ago

They all suck as well of course. But MS spent 10s of billions on these publishers for mass consolidation, every made a song and dance about how MS would save them, using their endless Windows, 365 and Azure money to keep them open forever and how Phil was some hero.

Nothing is safe unless it makes money, even for MS.

romulus235h ago

It is a big deal.

Microsoft has closed
Fasa Studios
Digital Anvil
Ensemble
Lionhead Studios
Press Play
Arkane Austin
Tango Gameworks

Einhander19725h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Wow how far back do you want to go back.

Lionhead Studios
Aces Game Studio
BigPark
Carbonated Game
Digital Anvil
Ensemble Studios
FASA Studio
Good Science Studio
Hired Gun
Microsoft Studios Japan
Microsoft Studios Victoria
Team Dakota
Xbox Entertainment Studios
Xbox Live Productions
Lift London
Access Software
Salt Lake Games Studio
Twisted Pixel Games
WingNut Interactive

And more before this, this was just their cuts during xbone era that Phil cut while he was at the head.

And some of those PlayStation studios were merged not closed, most of the UK studios were folded into each other.

Japan Studio was renamed to Asobi not closed, aAsobi was an internal team of Japan Studio the "closure" the press misinformed people about was more or less a name change, the studio is in the same building and when the change happened less than 5 people mostly leadership positions chose to leave the studio to form Bokeh Studio, which still works closely with Sony.

And even if your deflection stood on it's own, Microsoft spent 3 Billion 3 years ago almost to the date to buy Zenimax and has already closed 2 of it's biggest studios and decimated Zenimax's support studio structure.

It's no wonder Todd Howard was talking about "more frequent releases" and letting other studios make their IP's games. The days of big budget huge Bethesda games is over...

In fact sadly Microsoft has ushered in the end of big budget gaming as we know it with their obviously unsustainable subscription industry change.

And I feel fully confident that this isn't the end of studio closures from these recently purchased studios.

Abnor_Mal5h ago

Ready At Dawn was never a Sony owned studio, and only made a few smaller God of War games and a Jax and Daxter spin off, and of course The Order1866.

They are currently owned by OcUlus Studios.

MrDead5h ago

How many times has MS fired Bethesda staff since they purchased it? I think it's been three rounds so far

BehindTheRows5h ago

Deflection is the finest form of delusion.

shinoff21835h ago

London studio what have they made recently. Really the worst one was Japan studio. That sucked.

In reality though your deflecting. The fact of the matter is Ms just closed the studio that made their highest rated game in years. That's insane.

Hofstaderman5h ago

Also many of those staff were absorbed into other studios.

VariantAEC3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Ready At Dawn was never a PS first party studio.
Manchester was closed and it was proposed that London should be closed, but their website is still up with no news about it being closed on their official site anywhere. So it's possible that the proposed closure just did not happen to get fufilled. Meaning London Studio *MIGHT* still be open running lean.

Edit: Japan Studio was closed with some staff making up the new Asobi Team Studio who's first title was the PS5 pack-in game "Astro's Playroom." Pixel Opus was closed and not replaced or spun-off their only games were Entwined and Concrete Genie they also helped publish Journey according to Wikipedia.

Phil needs to step down. What kind of usual spin do you want?

More and more people lose jobs but the people at the top stay the same. Hardware sales tank despite billions and billions spent. The math is plain and simple.

Sonic18814h ago(Edited 4h ago)

I'm still trying to figure out what was the real reason to acquire Bethesda for millions or Billions of dollars if you're closing down studios 🤔 What were their true intentions 🤔 I mean do Microsoft really want to be a third-party publisher? It sounds like they're confused.with their future in gaming

VariantAEC3h ago

@Sonic1881
To rape each studio for their sweet succulent ultra-valuable IP. This is Microsoft's favorite past-time.

Not for me, I'm 100% physical media all of the time.

jwillj2k422h ago

I hate that I have to keep calling this out, but your physical disks mean nothing if the game code attempts to connect to a server prior to playing.

Hugodastrevas22h ago

And that happens when? I'm playing completely offline here, stellar Blade to be more precise.
I'm sorry but I've never run into that imaginary problem you're talking about, I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it has never happened to me.

jwillj2k421h ago

You not running into the problem yet has no bearing on my argument. You’re acting like the medium is the shield for you being able to always play your games when it effectively is not. The game code itself can try to connect to a server or the console you’re playing on may receive an update that requires that game to connect to a server. Just because you haven’t ran into it doesn’t mean anything lol you don’t own your games no matter how you try.

Hugodastrevas20h ago

So I have never run into the problem you're talking about and your answer is an hypothetical? Look I can play any game of my library offline right now without issue.
That issue is in your mouth and alone.

Crows9016h ago

Actually...there's an easy way...don't connect. If it doesn't require a connection and you don't connect...the code can't update...obviously....confused why you don't get what he's saying.

outsider162416h ago

Hold on..lets say i dnt have an online connection, can i atleast play the game offline though. Was thinking of getting this

jwillj2k411h ago

None of you use your brains.

OK, let’s explore this playing offline. not talking about Diablo specifically just gaming in general.

Are you going to buy two PlayStations? One offline one online? If not, moment you want to play something that requires a connection you’re cooked.

Does game experience you love so much stay the same offline?

Is the game even playable offline?

The whole point of my argument is that we don’t hold the keys anymore. The gatekeepers are the developers and console makers regardless of whether it’s digital or physical. You altering your play style for a lesser experience is not a workaround, it doesn’t solve the overall problem.

None of this matters since the move to the cloud is inevitable.

spicelicka1d 1h ago

So you have to buy the game and can only stream to the PS5 devices using PS plus premium? What is the point of that. Much more useful when you can stream to other devices.

MrNinosan1d 1h ago

Works great on my Portal while at work 👍

spicelicka22h ago

That's streaming off your PS5, not from the cloud. This is specifically referring to cloud gaming.

CrimsonWing691d ago

Can’t you, uh, do this on your phone?

Tacoboto23h ago

Sony doesn't yet have a web or app-based solution to stream games off their cloud service, the closest you may be able to get would be Remote Play if they allow cloud streaming during a Remote session.

And yes this applies to the Portal too.

Einhander19725h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Tacoboto

Please stop talking about PlayStation Streaming, you don't know what you're talking about.

I just explained this to you the other day where you were telling people that remote play was their only cloud solution, because apparently you didn't understand how PlayStation Premium works even though PS Now was a thing since shortly after the launch PS4..

You can stream to PC and Mac, and they had mobile clients for it in the past but probably for the same reason Microsoft is fighting Apple and Google PS Now wasn't allowed on App stores. Which is why it's not on iPhone and Android still.

And to be honest, I am glad they are trying to keep it on the console, all their moves away from the console seem like a step in the wrong direction, which isn't working so great for Microsoft...

anast1d ago

Blizzard is shoving this game everywhere. Diablo 4 is going to take an even bigger hit soon. Path of exile 2 is coming out and it looks insane.

Crows9016h ago

Well they're about to release the next season...I think that might be way they're pushing the game again.

anast3h ago

I mean I get what you are saying, but D4 isn't doing that well either.

UnbreakableAlex23h ago(Edited 23h ago)

I completed it on gamepass. Thanks God I dint pay it full price. It plays like a lazy mobile game. I am not a pro diablo gamer (Diablo 1 was the only one I completed) but D4 has no atmosphere, no creepy feeling and soundtrack like the first one and its so easy, I managed to not buy any weapon and had 4 Million Credits on level 55. I always used the same 4 attacks from the beginning and died maybe 10-15 times. It's so easy, wtf. I remember D1 to be pretty hard.
WTF happened? Is Diablo 3 also that bad?

jwillj2k422h ago

Diablo 3 was my first Diablo game. I had to use the mailbox cheats to keep it interesting.

Crows9016h ago(Edited 16h ago)

Diablo 3 was really hard at launch....then they made it easy.

They love scaling difficulty though.

anast3h ago

D2 is the pinnacle. I still fire it up from time to time.

GrmpyolGamer 14h ago

Considering that the PS cloud steaming is garbage compared to XCloud and is limited to certain devices this isn't something to brag about. Wake me up when Diablo is on PS plus

Microsoft Survey Asks About Handheld

A new survey from Microsoft has further hinted at the possibility of an Xbox handheld being in development.

This is definitely happening, I just hope they have 2 versions one with a much bigger screen.

GamerRN6d ago

I'll be happy with this, and a PC console hybrid that rivals anything we have power wise

Number1TailzFan6d ago

The problem with bigger devices is playing them on your side in bed, Vita and before that was fine. Since the Switch you gotta have a gooseneck holder & controllers detached so you can lie down holding them, or your arm will quickly get tired.

1Victor6d ago

@thesofware: “A much bigger screen than what?”
A gaming laptop 🤷🏿🤣

Kosic6d ago

Than the screen originally planned...duh... :D

darthv726d ago

it kinda already did... https://www.xbox.com/en-US/...

They are just gauging interest in one of their own.

crazyCoconuts6d ago

A Xbox version of Logitech G-Cloud?
I mean, why bother? Not like the G cloud is flying off shelves and what would Xbox add to make it better?
They're surely not going to create bespoke architecture here and there are already a few Windows handhelds out there. I have little confidence in their ability to put together an attractive UI in the way Steam did. So I doubt anything will come from this.

KicksnSnares7d ago

Day One buy for me if they'll make a dedicated handheld device.

darthv726d ago

i have that logitech g-cloud. Its a sweet little piece of kit. I like that it can also install games from the play store unlike the other android based handheld.

mudakoshaka6d ago

It sure is! Don't understand why you get the down-votes. Whoever does not like the G Cloud must have been dropped down a well, head first, when they were of a younger age.

PassNextquestion6d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will perform better in Japan if they do actually make a handheld since everyone says handheld and mobile are king over there.

TiredGamer6d ago

This looks like the future of the game industry... all three platforms with a handheld option.

I wonder if the Playstation Portal is a technology test-bed/prototype for a future Playstation handheld?

rlow16d ago (Edited 6d ago )

It’s a possibility but I can’t help but think would that be the best way to go about it? Though it would give you data on how much it is used and game type. It’s still not a true portable device and so people approach it differently. I think that data on phones, tablets, and of course the competition would give a better indication.

But I really think if Sony is considering a new PSP that could play ps5 games, now would be the time to dive in. Honestly, if they do this, it would be huge.

Traecy6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Doubt if Sony PS wants to support a new handheld with first party games. Something they lacked with the Vita. What they should do is have a handheld that is like the PS Portal which can play all games but play those games on the go as well as at home. Something like that is a better investment.

TiredGamer6d ago

Agreed that you will probably never see a separate line of games specifically for the handheld (a la PSP or PSVita). The modern economics and expectations of game development make that cost prohibitive. What makes more sense is if the full-fat game on PS5 or PS6 has a special "handheld" profile that is automatically optimized for the lower spec handheld. There would be some significant compromises compared to the bigger console variant, but it would be the same game overall and would only require a single purchase.... somewhat what the Switch does with a lower resolution when playing handheld versus docked.
