Modern Warfare 4 publisher discusses criticism from gamers

The CEO of Activision, Bobby Kotick, has been criticized by some for how he handles business and some of the things he has said in the past, but the gaming executive decided to provide a response to some of the remarks.

According to a report from CVG yesterday, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said when people really take a closer look at some of the criticism of him, it's only a small number of people who are involved.

Kotick's response: "Lol umadbro's keep buying my game"

MikeMyers4145d ago

Actually his response is the community within the forums don't represent the voice of all the consumers. He's right in that sense. What people say in forums don't really depict what everyone thinks. You'll find a lot of negativity out there and there are many trolls who feed off of this attitude.

That doesn't mean I like Bobby Kotick or even agree with his ideology of running a business.

Gazondaily4145d ago (Edited 4145d ago )

Agreed, especially considering how mass market COD really is, the voices of contention against him are arguably relatively small in comparison.

I did chuckle at this:

"People criticize me for not being passionate about the products, but I am," Kotick said.

And the next thing you read is:

'Activision's most popular franchise, "Call of Duty," is rumored to have a fourth "Modern Warfare" title currently under development'

I can imagine the evil laugh in his subconscious as he said that.

Hydralysk4145d ago (Edited 4145d ago )

It's true that only a small percentage of people are vocal about how they dislike him, and most people who buy his games don't even know who Bobby Kotick is, but I always find it odd that the implied assumption is that everyone who doesn't express their dislike online approves of him and his business practices.

Maybe the full interview from CVG will help.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has once again tackled the subject of his reputation amongst gamers.

The executive is something of a polarising figure who's generally perceived to be disliked by core gamers for wanting to 'take the fun out of game development' and raise software prices.

And while he has previously acknowledged that his sometimes controversial comments and "commitment to excellence" can make him "come across as being like a dick", Kotick - who's said to have made more than $8 million last year - told the New York Times this week that it's only a small section of the gaming community who criticise him.

"When you dig down and look at the people who are vocal in their criticism of me, it's a small number," he said.

The recently divorced executive added: "Think about what it's like for my dating life when the first picture that comes up is me as the Devil. You see all this chatter and you realize that they game the search results. These super-sophisticated 19-year-olds are smarter than our expensive P.R. firm."

Kotick also insisted that he's a gamer, labelling a 2009 Forbes article which claimed he didn't play games inaccurate.

He told the NYT he had calluses 'from playing too much Defender' and that today he mostly plays Skylanders with his daughter.

"People criticize me for not being passionate about the products, but I am," he said.

During a keynote at the 2010 DICE Summit, Kotick also tackled his reputation with gamers, saying: "I don't know how this happened, but all my life I was the rebel flying the Millennium Falcon or the X-Wing fighter and suddenly I wake up and I'm on board the Death Star."

if only COD devs could just buy the cryengine and use it in their games to make the game fapable....

Kalowest4145d ago (Edited 4145d ago )

It's not just about Graphics, Its about gameplay also. Now I see why crysis is popular.

tachy0n4145d ago

its not the game's fault you dont have enough brain cells to play crysis.

the story mode is the only good thing about COD...

eliteslaya134145d ago

Fappable at sub-HD 25 FPS on your Xbox? You people don't get why Call of Duty is so popular.

mynameisEvil4145d ago

Waitwaitwaitwaitwait... Are you SERIOUSLY trying to imply that Crysis is a thinking man's game? My God, that's... that actually just made me laugh. You want to know some thinking man's shooters? STALKER, especially at the beginning. ArmA. Operation Flashpoint. SWAT 3/4. Rainbow Six.

Crysis is NOT a thinking man's shooter. It's no where friggin' close. Hell, Battlefield 3 is more of a thinking man's shooter, but that doesn't mean that game is one, either.

Haha, I still can't get over that... Crysis... a thinking man's shooter. Dear God, that cracks me up. XD

CALL OF DUTY REST IN PEACE NOV 2013

Yangus4145d ago

I'm not HC CoD fan, but like Modern Warfare series. I wait MW4(I hope coming new engine next-box).
Sell my BO2, dont like this game.

strigoi8144145d ago

i guess they just have to rename that sh$t seriously..and everyone will buy again. Coz gamers are just sick to the stomach of seeing Call of Duty there and adding figures like warfare2-3-4-5..doesnt attract fans it just make fans think oh its activision and it will be just the same engine same gameplay..rename it and it will build up a hype

Look, to be honest the FTC should just stop.

MS has A/B and nothing has really changed yet...if you are worried about 5-10 years from now...just drop it cause the future is unpredictable.

Take this week's news, that 4 Xbox exclusive are going Multiplatform.

Yeah man I think Microsoft here getting to probe is kinda wrong unless you only have accessed to necessary information not complete access imo.

Abriael80d ago

Obviously they aren't giving them the password to Sony's computers and telling them "help yourself."

Eonjay78d ago

"Microsoft allowed to probe Sony and Ubisoft"

Sounds hot...

ApocalypseShadow79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

Maybe Microsoft should also talk and get help from their "congressional influencers" at The Capital. They had plenty to say on the matter before the acquisition. They are mighty quiet after the purchase went through. Almost as if they had a stake in the matter.

Abriael79d ago

Could you perhaps explain how this is related? I'm honestly curious since you seem to bring it up rather often.

S2Killinit79d ago

He is pointing out how corrupt MS is, and how money talks. I think.

KwietStorm_BLM79d ago

I would say read between the lines but it's pretty damn clear as it is.

Bathyj79d ago

You should be careful upsetting Sony too much Microsoft.
You might need them to sell your subpar games soon.

TornRaptor79d ago

The games will become the best things ever all of a sudden.

Bathyj79d ago

Yeah I really doubt that.
I'm struggling to think of one I really cared about missing.

Hofstaderman79d ago

Bwhahahaha. Ain't that the truth.

Mr_cheese79d ago

The only exclusive im personally interested in from Microsoft is Elderscrolls and that's not even got s release date.

Everything else is genuinely of none interest.

OtterX79d ago

Microsoft never waits for the probing to be consensual.

derek79d ago

This isn't a major victory. They're essentially being allowed to call witnesses in regards to agreements they reached with Sony and Ubisoft which was initially blocked because Microsoft didn't make the request through the proper channels. This case is dead, there is no way the ftc will be allowed to unwind this acquisition.

Sephiroushin79d ago

they probably know case is death but want some proof to sue them for a few millions regarding other stuff, the ftc loves to sue everyone, be sure that as soon as all this end they will just go sue MS and end in a settlement.
