Review: Halo: Spartan Assault (DarkZero)

Thomas from DarkZero writes - "Halo: Spartan Assault is a game that started out life as a tablet experiment which has now being ported to Xbox One. That is not a good sign to start with - as it's proven games cannot jump between two such divergent platforms without a few hiccups. The next bad sign - one that should be marked with a big light up arrow - is that in the port over to consoles microtransactions are still on show. It’s not just the buy once and be done kind of deal - they are consumable microtransactions - the one's you can buy multiple times. Of course, none of this nonsense would really matter if the core game played well. As I mentioned in another recent review, I've stepped around, and outright ignored, bad microtransactions before, simply because the core game was compelling enough without them. Sadly that's not the case for Spartan Assault."

Lol you don't even remotely need to use the microtransactions in Spartan Assault.

I've been playing the game and on operation d and the game isn't that bad, it gets a strong seven the aim is a little annoying, but after practice I'm picking the covenant off like defenses facing tony romo. Near, far, in motion standing still, etc

LMAO @ this score. I'll bet this is the same site that would give pos games like Journey goty.

The game is good.

Journey is deserving of GOTY

I agree the score is ridiculously low but for an xbox title its quite average. For a tablet game its brilliant. I play it on my surface.

Btw Journey did win GOTY almost across the board

If this game didn't have MS and Halo attached to it, and was made by an indie dev instead, it would be getting 8s and 9s. Game reviewers really can't be trusted, since most review on a bias.

The Top Five Top-Down Shooters Worth Checking Out

BNR: Ah, top-down shooters- one of the more arcade-ey genres with a measure of popularity today, there are quite a few of them on the market. Assuming you’ve played Asteroids (which drew inspiration from what many consider to be the first video game, SpaceWars) and want some more, which are worth your time? Don’t despair; my personal top-five is here! these are games that I personally really enjoyed- if you’re into top-down (also known as twin-stick) shooters, you’ll want to check these out.

My personal favorite TDS of all time is Dead Nation by House Marque. I loved that game so much, and clocked so many hours into it. Can't wait for Alienation.

Review: Halo: Spartan Assault (Apple iPad) | Digitally Downloaded

DD:
What’s quite incredible about Spartan Assault is that it has managed to encapsulate the atmosphere and design of the Halo games, previously exclusive to Microsoft systems, into the confines of an iPad. From the way troops behave, to the weapons and locations, it feels like an authentic Halo experience, even though it's a top-down dual stick shooter, rather than a FPS, and that’s the best thing Spartan Strike has going for it.
