Angie Santiago reports from SpawnFirst: "Two users on the Xbox Support forum have reported that their Xbox One had an amber light on the power brick and, when they plugged it into a different outlet, the console began smoking from the top. Sending the console back to Microsoft will get you a replacement console. One user said that the amber light appeared and, when they reset the power supply, the console made a buzzing sound and then began to smoke."

I'd chalk it up to outlet issues in the homes in question. Power supplies can smoke if they are plugged into the wrong voltage outlet. I know because I did it once when I was overseas.

I believe the word you're looking for is anecdotal.

I agree a couple unsubstantiated reports is not indicative of a major fault, but many reports that may or may not come keep companies on their toes and make it so companies can't just sweep things under the rug easily.

RROD would have probably gone to court if MS hadn't seen that the community was upset about it. The PS2 disc drive issues went to court and they happened when the internet was rather insular and didn't include every random customer out there, and it was much less of a problem.

People are going to talk. People are going to make jokes. And people are going to speculate. The only thing that makes me shake my head are the ones that seem to hope this is true for the console war, but even they are a pretty small, albeit loud, minority. No one should want their fellow gamers to have to go through some of the troubles reported, because I'm sure they wouldn't like it if it happened to them.

I completelly disagree. Everyone having issue, doesn't matter how small or in which kind of product, should be reporting it. If anything, this makes more customers aware and manufacturers have to act faster on fixing issues. Imagine for one second if everyone that have a problem would just contact warranty and be done with it... I'm not simply talking about consoles still having over the charts fail rate all around, I'm talking about paint manufactures still using lead if researchers had not heard on the problem and further investigating it, forcing 'em to remove lead and/or find other safer components.

Also, what you expect makes to logical sense! If everyone were to wait on someone else report before they report their own issues, no one would be reporting at all...

This is why I don't leave electricals on all of the time, fully powered or in standby, when not in use I unplug it. My fridge freezer, my telephone, my alarm clock, smoke detectors and CO2 detectors are always on but that is it.
The potential fire hazard, and the waste of electricity is why the whole concept of XB1 is flawed.

(Whole concept as in XB1 powered on for 10 years, and with X amount of set top boxes and other things plugged in, also powered on).

The fact that the PS4's manufacturing defects and errors have been pretty consistent while the XB1's have been all over the place means that in Sony's case it's just a simple manufacturing defect, while Microsoft's is rushed production and poor quality control. Obviously, the XB1 was rushed out the door in a panic when Microsoft realized Sony was not messing around this time.

If this is true, I wouldn't put all blame on MS for this one. Prior to release, MS had to run everything by the FCC, who either passes or fails a product for safety. It's not just an organization you pay a fee to and get a green light to sell a product.
Whatever the case, I REALLY hope this was a very rare incident. I hate seeing articles about console failures, PS4, X1 or Wii, especially with safety. A massive recall on a consoles launch would suck.

well, even though the nature of the malfunction is highly indicative of a short console life expectancy, there is still hope that this is a highly selective problem. At least lets hope so for the sake of all the xbone customers. I got to say though, a defect like this is a bad sign. At least with other problems you can claim that its a foreseeable problem that is known to the manufacturer. But when the console begins to smoke, that means the problem wasn't known to Microsoft, and that is not good.

ive seen way too many console setups where they werent ventilated at all or enclosed ... these isolated cases are more user caused than hardware.

sidenote: if you build pc's , most people including me , have gone thru batches of graphic cards that have been dead out of the box or died a few days into use, ive returned at least 10 gfx cards to new egg in the last 7 yrs.

It even seems to go as far as any potential good news for X1, having the opposite rating as the bad. As far as missteps regarding check-in, backwards compat, HDD, Indie Publishing...unless you have lived under a rock...check-ins are out, backwards compat Ps4 can't either, each box is a devkit, HDD I can add to it via USB3.

- opinion. I vastly prefer the look of the X1 over PS4. It has a classic, even retro look, fused with contemporary design. It looks like something that would actually belong among an entertainment setup. The PS4 looks alien - it just doesn't fit with anything. Friends of mine that own both consoles and commented on them, all agree they think the X1 looks better in person.
