IGN- Outlast Review

IGN:Outlast can stand proudly as a unique and terrifying survival horror game. Unlike many modern horror games, it remembers that the most frightening monsters are those that you can't kill, but have to flee from, and it creates an outstandingly creepy atmosphere that rendered me defenseless against its many well-paced jump scares. Annoying design choices and forced moments of repetition have a bad habit of spoiling the mood, but between them is an experience that's scary as all hell.

Can not wait for this game to hit the PS4! And its free? that's a win win right there

Going to have to get my girlfriend play this. Already introduced her to Slenderman, she hated me for that.

The Evil Within looks promising as well. Hope survival horror makes a proper come back this gen.

@hankmoody

Yeah, from the little I have seen it looks amazing. I don't know why but it gives me an old resident evil/silent hill days vibe.

Ive always been a big survival horror but with those franchises (above) currently being pretty crap maybe these fresh IP's will reinvigorate the genre.

Evil Within was made by the guy who created Resident Evil, so you'd be totally on point for getting an RE vibe off of it. There's another horror game coming out that's inspired by Fatal Frame but the name escapes me. Fatal Frame 2 was the only videogame that gave me full on nightmares.

I only ever played Fatal Frame 3 (The one with the nightmare mansion) but yeah. That game scared the s**t outta' me.

I always found the F.E.A.R series pretty good for scares too (bar the third entry).

F.E.A.R. 3 was actually a damn good coop game, it just wasn't scary in any way whatsoever. Kind of a shame as the first one was pretty creepy. By the third one, the story made no kind of sense whatsoever. If you have an XBox 360, you can play Fatal Frame 1 and 2 for the original Xbox on it through the backwards compatibility. Highly recommended.

Waiting for the sun to set and the family to crash. Looking forward to some good scares!

Looks pretty damned great. Can't wait to pick this up on PS+.

Shame it's quite short, though.

A lot of my favourites are on this list so I whole heartedly approve.
Everything except The Observer. It started out really interesting but quickly unraveled into a train wreck. Including frustratingly dull dives into mind sequences, They neutered the monster with boring on rail stealth sequences and a laughably obvious and cringeworthy ending. Mix in bugs and some wonky controls to boot.
I had really strong impressions with it to start but ended up absolutely hating it.

I got 2-3hrs in and couldn't take it anymore, the constant need to switch between the 3 visions just became so annoying and honestly just unnecessary.

monkey602536d ago

I actually agree. At first I thought it was a great idea because the game wasn't holding your hand with the Detective work but it was so unintuitive too. It became a sequence of staring at everything for long enough in 3 different vision modes just to see what stuck.

Soma would be more existential horror than anything but I'll be damned if it didn't have one of the best stories in game that I've experienced. Blew my mind.

I remember the suffering and it was descent game. I always wanted to play Crimson but never got to it.

But honestly, I’ve never played a game that really scared me, like some movies from the past have.

Silly gameAr557d ago

I remember The Suffering 1 and 2. I haven't thought about those games in years. I still remember some parts of the level in the prison where a guy was sucked through a vent screaming. I don't know why that's stuck with me all of these years.

I'm saving RE VIII for when the PS VR2 comes out.
