How Microsoft Won GamesCom 2013

VideoGamer: "While there are no actual 'winners' or 'losers' really - both consoles will go on to find huge and successful fan bases - it seems to me Microsoft has come out of GamesCom in a far greater, and stronger, position than what it had before it went into it."

Next gen is going to be epic, cant wait to get my hands on both consoles

xHeavYx3917d ago (Edited 3917d ago )

"Killzone: Shadow Fall and Infamous are more of the same". Yeah, and COD, Battlefield, Forza, FIFA, timed exclusives and DLC and Kinect Sports: Rivals are groundbreaking new technology.
He even goes to say that Knack is not for him, but has no problem praising Kinect Sports? What a joke of a "journalist"

Skips3917d ago (Edited 3917d ago )

The only new games MS announced were Kinect games and a coop game of a dead franchise. (Fable)

-___-

lmao, I'd take indies like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Rime, and Shadow Of The Beast over more Kinect games ANY DAY...

Yay for micro-transactions for Ryse though!!! (Meanwhile, Sony announces free DLC for Killzone Shadow Fall)

Like what Hammad said below, must've seen a different Gamescom. lol

Infamous2983917d ago

Most of xbox one launch titles were orginally xbox 360 titles.

buynit3917d ago

Ok smart ass...

What exactly is any ps4 game doing that is ground breaking?

And rivals does look good and fun to play with the fam, but I know you game in a closet anyway so how can you use kinect right?!

DestinyHeroDoomlord3917d ago

How dare he have a different opinion, seriously though who gives a damn what other people's preferences are?

gaffyh3917d ago

@buynit - I think his point isn't that PS4 is doing anything groundbreaking, it's that Xbone isn't doing anything groundbreaking.

ThanatosDMC3917d ago

@buynit
Did you write this? Did xHeavYx hurt you? I'm sorry.

AngelicIceDiamond3917d ago (Edited 3917d ago )

@Heavy I don't agree or disagree with the guy but its called an OPINION.

Can a man or a woman have an opinion?

I mean is it illegal to have a different opinion than you? Are you a King, President, Ambassador no your not so your opinion is just like us normal people.

You Sony fans are are way to damn sensitive and defensive.

Calm down geez.

"Gamers were the winners

this is the attitude that should be out there. not childish defensive antics like the poster above me.

Maddens Raiders3917d ago

Would be great if he really meant it but if this were a Gran Turismo article childish defensive antics would be on display.

*check the comment history before handing out kudos so quickly next time ;)

trafalger3917d ago (Edited 3917d ago )

when a member makes a reasonable post i see no reason in checking there history. it was a neutral comment and changing directions serves no purpose. but since you brought it up i looked into your history and it isn't neutral at all.

hankmoody3917d ago

It kills me that you got disagrees on that. For some people, it HAS TO BE one or the other I guess. SMH

Sony won because of one game:RIME! That game looks fantastic!

Thisisjuju3917d ago

I'm with you there. That game looked fantastic.

I also liked Murasaki baby, although I was like WTF am I watching when they unveiled it.

HugoDrax3917d ago

No one won anything, as I didn't see a trophy presentation (No Pun intended)

Although, how hilarious would it be if at the end of every Sony conference someone would bring out a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum trophy to the presenter hahaha! Especially, since Sony started off being comedians during E3 with the "This is how you share games on your PS4 video"

n4rc3917d ago

@thisisjuju

Dude I felt exactly the same way.. Those are the games that actually stand out to me.. Even if that baby game looks mad creepy Lol

Work prevents me from buying both so I picked my most used platform.. But if I wasn't working 50-60h a week I'd be getting both for sure..

Gamers are the winners here.. I can't agree more..

"Killzone: Shadow Fall and Infamous are more of the same (no bad thing if the franchises have won you over), DriveClub hasn't found its feet yet, and Knack... well... screw Knack*."

Extremely biased article if you ask me.. Shadow Fall and Second Son both look like true Next-Gen games, and they absolutely don't look like 'more of the same' to me. DriveClub looks cool and has a lot of potential. As for Knack, it will definitely find its audience so no reason to say 'screw Knack'.

The X1 looks like a true Next Gen system, don't get me wrong. But with MS partnering here and there to get exclusive content, the FIFA deal with EA and Ryse getting microtransactions, there are still reasons to remain skeptical in my opinion.

IanVanCheese3917d ago

Shadow Fall hasn't impressed me but Infamous Second Son does look pretty sweet. I'll probably pick up a PS4 when Infamous is released.

I've played Driveclub and it's a decent racing game, but it won't compete with the likes of Forza/GT/Grid.

Knack is cool, a nice throwback to games like Ratchet and Clank. It's a nice title to have on the system.

Ryse's 'microtransactions' are just the stuff that was in Mass Effect 3's multiplayer, which I liked. You earn points in game to buy packs which give random weapons, if you are lazy then you can buy those packs with real money.

I'll be getting an Xbox One at launch because I prefer their launch/launch window exclusives, but both consoles are great.

Minato-Namikaze3917d ago

You underestimate Evolution. I had more fun with Motorstorm than any other racer this gen. Split second came close but nothing was more fun than racing through a hurricane for the 1st time.

It sucks Apocalypse came out around the time there was the Tsunami and people were put off of the game.

JunioRS1013917d ago

What is it with people that hate Knack..? Like wtf have you never played Crash Bandicoot??

To act like Knack is irrelevant blows my mind. Watch some of the new off-screen gameplay from gamescom, it actually looks really fun... I'll probably wait til a price drop or something because I'm on a strict budget this fall, but I mean I definitely wanna play it.

I feel like nobody is giving Knack a fair shake, as if everyone forgot about Crash Bandicoot and Ratchet & Clank

dredgewalker3917d ago

Some games just don't appeal to some people no matter how good they are. It's just preference, I got nothing against that.

Ratty3917d ago

IMO Knack looks like the best PS4 launch exclusive but there are some 3rd party games I'll go for first. It doesn't look bad but it's not exactly my favorite style of games.

JunioRS1013917d ago

@ One_Eyed_Wizard

You're going to get a lot of disagrees, but you're actually right. Other than KZ i think Knack is the most visually rigorous launch titles.

People who disagree are people who don't know what to look for to determine the fidelity of a game's graphics.

It's not just character models and textures. It's about physics, particle simulation, animations, geometry. Knack actually really delivers on those fronts, and it's kind of a cool concept, it's more of a crash bandicoot tech demo than a simple platformer.

Especially considering it's the very first round of games for PS4. It'll look quite awesome on a big 1080p screen, IMO.

Chevalier3917d ago

How are Halo, Forza, Fable and Dead Rising sequels not more of the same lol?

JBSleek3917d ago

This comment section is about to get really stupid....

negative3917d ago

lol in before fanboy meltdown

Heisenburger3917d ago

I read that in the voice of the movie trailer guy. Idk why.

GarrusVakarian3917d ago

That's funny, could have sworn it was a videogames trade fair and not a competition.

Wizziokid3917d ago

"It's not that Sony had a bad show, either. Its conference, while slow, underlined its dedication to the indie scene, and it remains the cheaper of the two. The games, however, still don't carry any weight of excitement with me. Killzone: Shadow Fall and Infamous are more of the same (no bad thing if the franchises have won you over), DriveClub hasn't found its feet yet, and Knack... well... screw Knack*."

Biased flaimbait?

Minato-Namikaze3917d ago

But killzone by all accounts is a a depature from the series roots. Not sure where people are getting the "more of the same" thing from, but the game looks to be more open than any other KZ to date.

Microsoft's Absurd Antics Have Me Scared For Dishonored And Arkane Lyon's Future

With Arkane Austin no more and Lyon living for who knows how long, the superb Dishonored is in serious danger; Microsoft cannot be trusted.

Relientk771d 2h ago

I love the Dishonored series so much and really want Dishonored 3. Microsoft better not screw this up.

JEECE23h ago

I mean, I think the fans will probably kill Arkane Lyon by cooking up reasons to hate whatever they do next without playing it. I've never seen a game so artificially disliked as Deathloop.

thesoftware73023h ago

Lol, why don't we just say, we are worried about all studios owned by MS now. They will keep closing studios until they have none left ...🙄

Skuletor20h ago

Just merge them all into a single studio, have it churn out a single Call of Duty every year and call it a day, lol.

Barlos20h ago

Don't be scared, you'll be fine.

Skuletor20h ago

It's exputer, fine is one word I would not associate with them.

Profchaos19h ago

I think it's becoming clear based on matt bootys comments there's no future for any IP that can't sell above 10 million within the launch window. But is also a small game that gives them prestige

/S it's beyond a joke right now

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus232d ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

rokos2d ago

According to Statista the net income of Microsoft is about $72.4 billion dollars which is a bit lower than last year profit. That is almost as much as Activision's acquisition but I assume that would be a one off since it costs so much plus I see how their focus has been shifted to AI, thus any major future investments will probably be in that area.

Markusb332d ago

i think you are really missing the point

VariantAEC1d 22h ago

@romulus23
That is not why MS buys studios. They might continue to buy because it's about taking that sweet sweet IP out of the corporate husks of their acquisitions.

ChasterMies2d ago

Xbox isn’t a separate company from Microsoft. It’s all Microsoft.

Abear212d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Let’s be real, this is the media spinning all the acquisitions and liquidations of said developers and spinning it to make M$ the villain.

This was bound to happen, a bigger slice of pie and cut costs, when the games come they stand to make more and that’s their agenda—it was the writing on the wall when the sales went through and legally all those who approved the sale and mergers knew this would happen.

Snowflakes need to realize business is ugly and you can cry all you want but this is how capitalism works. And it works.

That said, M$ needs to steer the narrative and grab hold of all this, make their plans known, hype the hell out of all those dead IP’s they plan to revive, and be honest about the timeline. This is likely to involve mobile and IP on other consoles, and most people realize that.

The problem is this company is incapable of being transparent and seems to often want to dissuade and confuse is customer base. The lack of E3 has hurt Microsoft and I don’t think they know how to properly or effectively market their brand anymore.

jwillj2k43d ago

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot3d ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

VariantAEC1d 22h ago

Years?

Try several decades, and in the gaming space 2.3 decades.

Jon615862d ago

You do realize this happens in ALL industries? Or are you just saying this because it is Microsoft? In any case I feel for those that are being let go but the trch industry is suffering right now.

jwillj2k42d ago (Edited 2d ago )

This absolutely does NOT happen all the time. Let me know the last time 1 company with a terrible product track record spent 100 billion onto acquire MULTIPLE successful companies in under a year only to shut them down and stop making their products regardless of how successful they were. Not merge them, completely shut them down.

And you can’t use Microsoft in your example.

Notellin2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Class action lawsuit? The law is on their side and protects them at all costs. There are no rules to protect the people at the bottom.

jwillj2k42d ago

Not true when it comes to mass layoff do your research.

RNTody3d ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead2d ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.

Yui_Suzumiya2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've been a fan of id since Wolfenstein 3D and I'm honestly afraid.

lodossrage2d ago

Toys for Bob saw the writing on the wall and bought themselves out.

Wouldn't be the first time a company did that under MS either. Bungie and Twisted Pixel did the same. Considering what just happened, I can see some other devs trying to buy themselves out too.

anast3d ago

Good thing the bosses of all those small studios made their money.

glenn19793d ago

they cant do it right now they will get burned

XiNatsuDragnel2d ago

Phil and his team need to be gone

lodossrage2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Won't make a difference.

The whole structure needs to be overhauled. Anyone that replaces Phil will be no different than him, Mattrick, or anyone else.

Until the company changes how they go about business, nothing will change

glenn19792d ago

I just don't have any idea what they would do , they have done sooo much damage on their xbox brand, they have a show at July or June I think, but will it even matter even they show amazing games, idkn

lodossrage2d ago

True,

But they may as well get it over with. Whether it happens now or later, the burning is going to hit the same.

Reality is the ONE move that can alleviate a lot of this is the one move they can't make. Remove day 1 from gamepass.

Microsoft Opening Xbox Mobile Game Store in July

The Xbox brand is expanding, as an Xbox mobile game store is opening this coming July where Microsoft will brings its "first-party portfolio."

Jin_Sakai4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

“Bond adds that they will start on the web”

This will go nowhere.

Nice knowing you Xbox. This is what happens when the house never gets cleaned.

MrDead4d ago

The only this MS is expanding is the amount of feculence it sprays on everyone who just want to enjoy gaming and make games.

The best thing MS can do for the gaming industry is leave and never return.

XiNatsuDragnel4d ago

Good luck with this even it might not succeed.
