EA financials show growing PC game revenue

Cyril Kowaliski: It's no secret that the PC industry is in dire straits these days. Quarter after quarter, shipments of PCs either stay flat or go down. Even Apple, which has traditionally outgrown the rest of the industry, is seeing Mac shipments decline. Some analysts now believe that PC shipments may have reached their all-time peak two years ago.

"EA's numbers include a breakdown of revenue per gaming platform, and they show that the company's net revenue from PC gaming actually rose by 8% compared to the same quarter last year. Not only that, but at $298 million, EA's PC revenue was higher than its Xbox 360 revenue ($256 million) or its PlayStation 3 revenue ($238 million)."

The more you know.

shivvy243959d ago

wow im surprised more profit came from PC !

starchild3959d ago

This is for all the ignorant people who think that PC gaming isn't as big as console gaming.

Last year (2012) PC game sales generated $20 billion dollars in revenue, which is far more than any single console.

brish3958d ago

It isn't as big as the console market.

From EA's financial report:
- total console = 569m
- PC = 276m

MidnytRain3958d ago

brish

I don't think they're looking at Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo as the same market.

darx3959d ago

I made the switch, don't know if I'll be going back to consoles.

GameOn3959d ago

I dont think I will either. Now I've paid the initial entry fee its super cheap to buy games.

the_hitman30003959d ago

Well as a person who games on both PC and PS3. I honestly don't think it's much of a difference unless you are good with mods I don't have luck with them unless it's left for dead and batman. And yes it does look better on pc considering most games are console ports to me you won't see a big difference. But it all depends I'm probley going to use my PC for Titanfall and other Microsoft exclusices but really either way you can't go wrong. Although The Division, Destiny are my main reasons for wanting a console well and some of sonys first party.

starchild3959d ago

The Division is coming to PC.

If you don't see a big difference in performance and image quality between PC and console versions of multiplatform games, you need to get your eyes checked.

the_hitman30003958d ago

I see the difference but to me games like assassins creed the difference isn't huge I know it is in other games like witcher 2 and crysis. But I'm only gaming at a 1360x768 resoultion and sadly i have to go to low to medieam settings for most new games excluding tomb raider to run past 30fps on my gtx 560 ti

piffyd3959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

when these articles say things like "It's no secret that the PC industry is in dire straits these days. Quarter after quarter, shipments of PCs either stay flat or go down." It makes me cringe every time

sure, total pc sales all over the world may be down, grannies and soccer moms have no need for a dedicated pc, their phones tablets are fine for facebook and email

but steam subscribers keep going up
NVidia and amd and intel profits keep going up
green man gaming
gamers gate
gamestop online
gog
beamdog
and many many more pc delivery services are more successful than ever before

there are more hardcore pc gamers now than there ever were

its consoles that are losing market share, and next gen is gonna be really rough for ps4 and xbox1, there is absolutely ZERO chance they will sell anywhere close to what they did last gen

PC gaming is the future, and the future looks awesome!!

Eldyraen3959d ago

Sad truth is almost only way Gamestop gets my money nowadays is through their PC app ;)

Even then it doesn't happen often but sometimes something comes up I can't pass up on. Was a sad day Impulse sold it though.

aquamala3959d ago

Interesting to see console revenue shows big up and downs, as console games make their money on the first few weeks of release, while pc is more consistent and linear, and some quarters like the last one PC has the most revenue!

There are no "thoughtful" ads in video games, EA

There are no thoughtful ads in Video Games, EA. Leave them be.

I think the only type of games that can gets away with it would be sport games, having those sponsors ads on the side like on real life.

But don't put freaking Doritos ads in Star Wars or something, it breaks the immersion. If it is a pop-up ads, then big no.

Hofstaderman10d ago

EA can thoughtfully eff themselves.

Makersbreath210d ago

EA coming back for the crown of being perceived as the worst company in gaming.

Chocoburger9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

One of my favorite series is the THPS franchise, and it was packed with ads, but it didn't bother me. Posters for skateboard companies, JEEP, and Nokia phones. It did sort of fit in with the game world, but that was the past, these days ad would be intentionally intrusive or unskippable loading screen type of imagery. Ugh, I know EA would do it in a horrible fashion. Screw them.

Report: Sexual Misconduct Investigation Conducted at EA, Suspects Named and What They Did Revealed

EA senior staff has been investigated for sexual misconduct involving female coworkers, and these said people have been named publicly.

isarai15d ago

Aye just call Phil, i mean he somehow made Bobby Kotick's scandal disappear and gave him a few million dollar high five on the way out.

Cacabunga15d ago

I wonder if it will be censored with some in game ads.

MrBaskerville13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Microsoft did, Phil Spencer played a minor part. He instigated the buyout that led to Kotick escaping all his controversies while getting a golden handshake.

Someone on Twitter calculated that the people hired in Tango and Arkane Austin could get a decent salary for roughly 17 years for the money Kotick was paid.

InUrFoxHole12d ago

Yeah some thing tells me Kotics $ was already guaranteed before MS made the deal. As for the studios... Let's be honest here... none of those studios made system sellers.

XiNatsuDragnel15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

EA about to go down like Activision and then Phil saves the day saying.this is good for the industry and consolidation will help create competition. /s.

MrBaskerville13d ago

Then they shutdown Codemasters and studio behind Jedi Survivor.

Atleast they could hardly do much damage that EA hadn't allready done. EA has shut down most of their studios by now.

ravens5215d ago

What's up with all these horny creeps. You gon be horny, fine. Just not at work take care of that shit before you go in. Rub one out if you have to. Don't be a creep at all. ESPECIALLY at work. But don't be one AT ALL.

Extermin8or3_15d ago

I mean part of the issue is that things transpired outside of work....

MrBaskerville13d ago

That's the thing he mentioned about not being a creep at all.

KwietStorm_BLM15d ago

You think deviants care where they are? Work sometimes makes it an even better situation for them because they can abuse their power.

mudakoshaka14d ago

Nerds think they are Gods when they are making video games.

NotoriousWhiz15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

"it seems that according to EA, given the events transpired outside of work between two adults, and the fact that once investigation has started that the alleged perpetrators didn’t do it again, the investigation is considered closed. [...] The victim still has to work with the people that harassed her."

Yep, EA is disgusting.

Extermin8or3_15d ago

I mean the fact stuff happened outside of work puts EA in quite a difficult position legally. These women don't seem to have reported the matter to the police which kinda ties EA's hands on what they can do. If they don't file reports of the crimes then yeah from EA's perspective it is stuff that happened outside of work. The only exception is the guy that apparently referenced things in the slack channel for work, spending on what he said proving it may be very hard and he may well be able to get away with plausible deniability. I don't like EA and I think these people need to be dismissed but without any legal action being taken, EA can't really do much without risk of being sued themselves for unfair dismissal etc.

Well, anything to make those shareholders happy, I guess. They're all that matters in this industry nowadays.

EA stocks haven't been profitable in over 5yrs. They better hope Take-two don't get the FIFA license lol.
