A Brief History of Hand Held Gaming and Why Microsoft Needs to Be Involved

Triverse writes, "Many have tried to dethrone the mighty Nintendo from their pedistal built around hand held gaming. Those same companies have failed, some damn near into bankruptcy over their failed hand helds. It takes clout, it takes deep pockets and exclusive titles to even make a dent in the armor that the Game Boy built."

They are kind of involved, a few windows 8 tablets can run PC games like the Razer Edge, more will be able to do this as the adoption of intel haswell grows.

Nah, once you go there all cell phones and ipads become dedicated gaming devices. That's a portable computer that also does gaming really. In reality, it's good nintendo owns that market because it allows them to produce great things like Fire emblem, pokemon and animal crossing. It also helps keep nintendo in business so they can do the crazy experiments they do.

Pittoo3967d ago

It can be called the XBox Small One.

Moonman3967d ago

Xbox Dead for the disagrees. :P

Pillsbury13967d ago

At this point they shouldn't even be involved in consoles.

InTheLab3967d ago

How about fixing the Xbone and GFwL before we jump onto another failed venture.

How bout not commenting on fake troll articles like they are real lol. Starting after mine is done. k now!

triverse3967d ago

It is not a "fake troll article", it is as the title states, a brief history of hand helds and why MS needs to be involved.

Hicken3967d ago

How about not always coming to the defense of a company with shitty practices, hellvaguy?

hellvaguy3967d ago (Edited 3967d ago )

"It is not a "fake troll article", it is as the title states, a brief history of hand helds and why MS needs to be involved."

Yes it was really was fake, unless MS recently announced plans to release a handheld because I've read nothing whatsoever on that.

@Hickys

Was saying to not comment on fake troll articles, sorry you got emo and went into defensive mode and spun it to thinking I was standing up for any company.

Hicken3966d ago

What makes it fake? It's an opinion piece on why the author thinks MS should be in the handheld market. Did you even read it?

No, that would be the sensible thing to do. And you're not the sensible type.

Speaking of, don't PM me with an exact copy of your last comment, all the while having me blocked.

I think we can all agree they have abandoned GFWL

Mikelarry3967d ago (Edited 3967d ago )

Hey let's not get carried away now boys and girls their home console only did well with the 360 now your saying portable I think they should first perfect home consoles before doing anything else

BillytheBarbarian3967d ago

I would love a portable 360. Just make a 360 controller and throw a nice PSP or Vita screen in the middle of it and boom. Throw a decent sized SD card in there and play whatever is on the marketplace. Leave it without a disc drive to save space/parts. Also allow it to play games from your gamertag library. I would buy one yesterday.

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

Xbox hardware revenue tanks to lowest point of Xbox Series generation

Profchaos1h ago

I'm not surprised surface is struggling they aren't relevant anymore

XBManiac19m ago

Too expensive hardware when others offer the same or more for less? Good work, Green Team.

SimpleDad4m ago(Edited 3m ago)

"Despite some early successes for Xbox games on rival platforms, Xbox hardware is down by a massive 31 percent this quarter."
"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.
Oh and Microsoft will be fine. Windows, Office and Cloud are growing with each pc purchase.

Why Monopolies In Gaming Must Not Be Allowed

As of right now, there are no monopolies in the games industry, and for the sake of the medium as a whole, they never should either.

thorstein10h ago

Shouldn't be allowed in any field.

Inverno7h ago

And yet the biggest tech companies in America are essentially that. They buy up all the small comps only to kill them off and steal what they have, and if they can't buy em they bleed them to death.

jwillj2k45h ago

Eventually they’ll realize the value is with the employee not the company. Buying an IP means nothing if the people who contributed are let go. They’ll get it one day.

MrCrimson5h ago

tech is different because they buy threats and then kill them. Twitter bought Vine and did nothing with it. Despite people seemingly liking it. Could've had tiktok a decade before bytedance. go figure.

Zenzuu6h ago

Monopolies shouldn't be allowed regardless. Not just for gaming.

MrCrimson5h ago

They buy IPs not talent. That's why these buyouts never work and the IPs die. Right now it's too expensive to develop games - but I expect that to shift maybe as AI tools can make it easier. The best games have been indie games for awhile as big developers fuck their ips to death with "games as a service" -
