Who is to blame for Xbox One?

Okay, normally my post about games and this industry are pretty unbiased as I really try and see the perspective of all sides. First of let me say I've owned every console under the sun but have remained a PC gamer my entire life. This blog is in no way shape or form a console war, or siding with any console. Its just truths that I think some if not most could agree with.

The Xbox One reveal was how I anticipated it, I posted on twitter and Facebook that the reveal would be Entertainment first and gaming second. Honestly though I didn't think it would be that bad, but it was. This reveal was focused on TV and Sports while revealing little to no gaming at all. Oh, and let us not forget Call of Duty.

Is Microsoft just a ridiculously smart company or are they just slowly putting the final nail(s) in the coffin. Well, I personally think that its your fault, yeah you, the Xbox Gamer, the one who claims Xbox is and all that ever will be gaming. Why wouldn't Microsoft capitalize on our stupidity as a community. Xbox has dropped so many exclusives from their library in place of "timed exclusive DLC" and IT WORKED for them! Do you guys think they don't check statics, online usage and number? The top 3 Xbox 360 games are Call of Duty, Halo, Gears of War. So what do they do? First off they literally beat the hell out of Halo and keep it going even after Bungie decided to leave. They realized that Gears was stale by the third one but with the name they could make a prequel (and it worked). Finally, the juggernaut of Sales was and always will be Call of Duty. Microsoft realized that all they need is Call of Duty, but Activision isn't stupid and they wouldn't give Microsoft the exclusivity of the game so Microsoft paid them a ridiculous amount of money to release Map Packs, and guess what...IT WORKED.

All the Xbox Gamers I have grown up with, and have played games with only really play Gears, Halo, and Call of Duty. In normal circumstances a company can not sustain with just 3 games but because of Call of Duty Microsoft can! They can even go on showing a new IP and having almost no one care (quantum something), They have put themselves in such an amazing position because they own the majority of a game that surpasses every game sold every year. They don't need to care about Gamers anymore, they don't need to worry about new IP's, hell they don't even really need to make games at all. They can simply switch over to TV and Sports because as long as Call of Duty is the number one selling game on their console, they really don't need to worry about us anymore, the core that established them as a formidable company in terms of gaming and internet service, no longer caring about anything but TV and Sports.

As a community we should withhold, and really show them that the core gamers are the foundation of their company. Without us, they are nothing and should be shown that. Why continue to feed your money to a company that clearly shows you they do NOT CARE ABOUT YOU. They charge you to pay for a service that ENABLES you to play games online. A service that is ALREADY PART OF THE GAME IN GENERAL. They charge you to watch Netflix, although you already pay Netflix. They rely on you picking up a small amount of IPs in big numbers to sustain their profits. If not for Call of Duty being so competitive on Xbox and everyone trying to be a "Pro Gamer" on Xbox I honestly think Microsoft would've remained as humble as they did with the first Xbox, and the first few years of the 360.

I have no intention to buy a Xbox One, I know a lot of people are saying wait til E3, but I'll say this now far before E3. I guarantee we will see maybe 5 IPs (new and old), little footage, a price, and Xbox Live features. That is my prediction. I can't feel bad for how Xbox Gamers are being treated, because anytime I think about it I can honestly just blame them. Supporting a company like you do Microsoft, always sticking up for them even when you know they are in the wrong, making excuses for everything from greed to reveals. All of it, is part of their plan, as long as they have you..they are going to only get worse. So go spend your 500+ on your Xbox One but for me its more like Xbox None (hehe).

Thanks for reading! If you have an opinion please discuss.

Oh, and yes I put Xbox Gamers, because the fanboys for Xbox have put themselves in their own category all together.

DragonKnight3988d ago

Too be far to the Xbox gamers, although they are a problem they are dwarfed by the Call of Duty gamers. These are "gamers" (and I use the term loosely) that got into gaming only for Call of Duty and only because their friends do it. They are the casuals of the Xbox world and they are responsible for probably half the problem when it comes to Call of Duty. Now of course, Call of Duty wouldn't have become as big as it has without the core gamers, but with as many complaints as I've seen about it over the years I find it hard to believe that there are as many core gamers still supporting it.

I of course could be wrong, and the core gamers are buying it even after complaining.

But the blame for Xbox One begins and ends with Microsoft. Yes, the unapologetic supporters of anti-consumerism are to blame too, but Microsoft has wanted the Xbox One from the very beginning, they just weren't able to realize it until now.

I find it sad that anyone thought Microsoft weren't the anti-consumer, money grubbing company they've always been right from the start. Microsoft do not care about consumer rights in the slightest. They've always led the charge in anti-consumer ideas on consoles since they entered the industry so I don't understand how anyone can be surprised.

Let's hope that the backlash seen online will translate to actual action against the Xbone this time. We can only hope though.

MikeMyers3988d ago

"Too be far to the Xbox gamers, although they are a problem they are dwarfed by the Call of Duty gamers."

Did it ever occur to you that PS3 owners are in the same scenario, that Call of Duty is also the number one franchise on the PS3? That games like Killzone, SOCOM, and Resistance are also aimed at the Halo crowd? That Gran Turismo and Forza users are more alike than you want to admit? That Uncharted and Gears fans are very alike?

As for anti-consumer what do you call Sony's support of online passes? How about PSN games that are locked such as Journey or games like Final Fight that have DRM built in but not on the Xbox 360?

If people really want just consumer friendly services they would be supporting GOG on the PC. They are DRM free and cheap games. The problem is these high profile AAA games are hugely marketed. Games like Killzone and Halo that console games can't ignore. Those are the casual gamers you are referring to because they are the same ones who gobble up Call of Duty on BOTH platforms. So let's not fool ourselves into thinking Sony supporters are any less casual than Xbox supporters. They are both aiming at a mainstream public. You don't invest in a studio like Media Molecule because you want a hardcore platform.

IcyEyes3988d ago

"Did it ever occur to you that PS3 owners are in the same scenario, that Call of Duty is also the number one franchise on the PS3?"

You don't have a clue about the Ps3 gamer, don't you ?
It's NOT the same thing. Not at all.
I have tens friends who have a PS3 for Uncharted, GoD of War, Gt5, MGS and they don't play at all CoD etc ... I have other friend who have a Ps3 for all that amazing exclusive and they play CoD.
I have other friends who own an x360 for 3 games + Cod and most of the time they prefer to play CoD.

Alright, that's it. I'm sick and tired of seeing notifications from replies from you and then lo and behold it's the same B.S. you always spew when following me around. So you wanna follow me around and attack me every chance you can get? Well, you asked for it. I know I said I wasn't going to acknowledge your pathetic fanboy self, but I don't give a damn anymore.

For starters, are you intelligent enough to comprehend the definition of the word "context?" Don't bother answering because I know you're not. Here's the definition of context even though you won't understand it.

"Noun: The circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which it can be fully understood and assessed.
The parts of something written or spoken that immediately precede and follow a word or passage and clarify its meaning."

Basically, it means staying within, or focusing on, the subject that is being discussed. svoulis made a blog about the Xbox One. He didn't make a blog about Sony or the PS3. So you bringing them up literally has nothing to do with any aspect of this blog and is done solely to troll me. And don't bother trying to say that you're not trying to troll me because you replied specifically to my comment and filled it with your trolling B.S. that you always try to fling my way.

You wanna talk anti-consumer? Frickin' Xbox Live. The most anti-consumer service to ever exist brought to you by your friendly neighbourhood software giant. How about charging to play half of the game you paid for in full? No, I'm sure that's totally consumer friendly because it gives you free access to Netflix... except it doesn't do that. Hmmm, then of course it's totally consumer friendly thanks solely to cross game chat, a feature seen ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE ELSE right?

How about microtransactions? I'm sure they're the most consumer friendly idea to ever be invented right? Thanks to Microsoft, they were introduced to the console world. And now we come to the Xbox One. The only console that has addressed things like "a fee to play used games," or "a camera that's always watching and listening," or "a fee to add additional viewers to your tv experience."

I'm not even going to bother addressing your B.S. about Sony because, guess what, this blog isn't about Sony. So take your fanboyism to the rest of the Xbone lovers who want to destroy gaming by supporting Microsoft's anti-consumer garbage.

nukeitall3988d ago (Edited 3988d ago )

@MikeMyers:

You are writing to blind eyes. The proof is right in front of them, but instead of addressing it, they refocus on the Xbox 360.

Take IceEyes for instance instead of acknowledging that CoD is the biggest freaking game on the PS3 as well as on the Xbox 360. Yet, 10 of his friends don't play it therefore you are wrong. lol!

Take another example, you made a perfect response to DragonKnight about anti-consumerism, but Dragon's response is to completely ignore the open nature of PC, and go on a rampage to attack MS/Xbox.

It seems dragon can't even take his mind of hating on the Xbox or MS.....

You are preaching to the wrong crowd, but hopefully not everyone is like dragon, but that is hard to see here on n4g.com. The fangirls here are strong and they all pat each other on the back, while the world keeps moving forward. Then they look back and complain the world disagree with them.

svoulis3988d ago

Do you even realize what you are saying lol?

"""Did it ever occur to you that PS3 owners are in the same scenario, that Call of Duty is also the number one franchise on the PS3? That games like Killzone, SOCOM, and Resistance are also aimed at the Halo crowd? That Gran Turismo and Forza users are more alike than you want to admit? That Uncharted and Gears fans are very alike? """

What you are saying is that Sony makes attempt to pull in the Halo crowd by offering, more then one type of FPS game to satisfy GAMERS? (Killzone Futuristic) (Socom Tactical) (Resistance Sci-fi). Uncharted has nothing to do with gears and would never be put in the same category aside from the camera type. What you are basically saying is just became a game is a certain "camera type" (FPS TPS Platformer) etc. That is should be targeted to A SPECIFIC audience. That right there in and of itself is a very dumb statement, and thats why Microsoft takes advantage of its audience (CAUSE YOU ALL FEEL THAT WAY)

"""As for anti-consumer what do you call Sony's support of online passes? How about PSN games that are locked such as Journey or games like Final Fight that have DRM built in but not on the Xbox 360?"""

You are joking right? DRM exist on every system, one way or another yes but, do you have to pay Sony to watch netflix Youtube Hulu or GAMES ONLINE? No, you don't. They even offer a Service (PS+) and they give you a F##KTON of free games. How can you even compare the two service? Party Chat is your only weapon in that debate.

Sony's support vs Microsoft is night and day, really, Sony actually has shown to care about us and they continue to do it look at what dev's have to say. Microsoft looks at money and thats it. They always have been this way that'll never change, look at the Xbox One, their new audience is Sport and TV nuts' they couldn't care less about their gamers BECAUSE THEY ALREADY HAVE YOU BY THE BALLS.

Stop trying to compare the two companies like I said this blog had nothing to do with console wars but ALL of what you said is ridiculously inaccurate its all opinion based fanboyism that caused Microsoft to go ahead and give up on gamers.

DragonKnight3988d ago

@nukeitall: The blind are people like you that defend the anti-consumer practices of Microsoft. I shouldn't even be addressing this, but to make a point I will. Is Sony perfect? F*ck no they aren't. But they certainly have worked a lot harder to gain the trust of the consumer for a lot longer than Microsoft has.

I dare you to come up with a positive side to Microsoft's Big Brother, Used Game fees, Fees Fees Fees and more Fees actions and try to keep it in the context of Microsoft. I know you won't because you're an MS fanboy (which is clearly evident when ANYONE can support what Microsoft is doing with the Xbox One), but it would be hilarious to see the fallacies you come up with.

The problem with MS fanboys is that they equate any problem that anyone has with the Xbox One (just like they did with the Xbox 360) as blind Microsoft hate with no legitimacy.

News flash, take a look around the internet, does it look like most people share your support of the Xbox One? Are you going to call the majority of the gaming community online nothing but blind MS haters? If MS is getting hate, it's for a frickin' reason.

MikeMyers3988d ago (Edited 3988d ago )

@IcyEyes

http://www.gamefront.com/ac...

"The fact is that we’ve experienced an unprecedented load on the DemonWare backend servers, which has steadily increased since late December beyond our expectations. In spite of all of our planning and precautions, the extreme load revealed several issues."

It's very very popular on the PS3 as well. Why are we arguing this point other than to try and depict PS3 owners are somehow way more diverse and hardcore? Of course people play other games like GT5 but the fact remains, it's the number one franchise on both platforms.

@DragonKnight

"Basically, it means staying within, or focusing on, the subject that is being discussed. svoulis made a blog about the Xbox One. He didn't make a blog about Sony or the PS3. So you bringing them up literally has nothing to do with any aspect of this blog and is done solely to troll me."

Then why are you assuming Xbox One owners are going to be just Xbox 360 owners? Why are you discounting how Call of Duty is popular on other systems trying to make it appear Xbox 360 owners are somehow more casual without acknowledging it's the same on the PS3?

Did I say Xbox Live fees are justified?

"How about microtransactions? I'm sure they're the most consumer friendly idea to ever be invented right? Thanks to Microsoft, they were introduced to the console world."

No they weren't. They were on the PC before. Did Microsoft stick a gun to Sony's head to have thousands of DLC for Little Big Planet? Did Microsoft force PC development to add maps to games before Xbox Live?

"I'm not even going to bother addressing your B.S. about Sony because, guess what, this blog isn't about Sony."

Of course it is. You mentioned a multiplatform title that is just as casual on the PS3. You also neglected to mention other anti-consumer practices like online passes (which of course you'll blame EA and not Sony for). You want to talk about context? How about using it within your argument so that we have a full understanding of what it is we are debating.

"I dare you to come up with a positive side to Microsoft's Big Brother, Used Game fees"

How about instant access. How about games already updated and ready to play? How about the cloud and being able to access your content anywhere and not have to drag your system around? How about single player games that can be alive within the cloud? Destiny and Watch Dogs will require an online connection. Microsoft has invested 300,000 servers which would mean better hit detection and less latency in a shooter game for example.

@svoulis

"Sony's support vs Microsoft is night and day, really, Sony actually has shown to care about us and they continue to do it look at what dev's have to say. Microsoft looks at money and thats it."

They all look to make money. Sony just isn't doing it as well as of late. Do you think a company who had a monopoly with the PS2 cared about consumers by forcing bluray and a $600 price tag with a weak line-up of games? Sony re-focused, all due to stiff competition brought on by Nintendo and mainly Microsoft.

@nukeitall

Don't worry. This site has for several years been most active by the PS3 crowd. The forums have been lopsided for years. There is far more activity from the PS3 forums than all Wii + Wii U, Xbox 360, PC and the handheld put together. Which of course will lead to bias against whatever it is Microsoft does.

SilentNegotiator3988d ago (Edited 3988d ago )

@DragonKnight
I totally agree.
A lot of people don't realize at all what is MicroSoft.
They build a console from statistic sheet and with the "hope" to be the only "one" device in your house.

Me ?
I love Halo, Fable, Gears, Alan Wake and Crackdown.
I'm pretty sad I will not play this game anymore because I really respect the developer, but I will never put that big brother in my house.

DragonKnight3988d ago

A lot of people feel the same way as you do. Problem is, Microsoft really couldn't care less. They don't want gamers any more. They want the Apple sheeple.

Crazyglues3988d ago (Edited 3988d ago )

@ DragonKnight

Wow... I wish I could give you 10 bubbles right now, that was so well said I can't say it any better...

I think indeed the causal gamer will indeed be to blame for this, as I'm pretty sure Microsoft would not have done it unless they believed they could get away with it...

-And as My brother told me the other day -(he's a causal gamer by the way) it won't matter people are still going to get their Xbox One, they will cry and complain just like XboxLive not being free but at the end of the day they will buy.. (He also plans on buying all three systems - he already has the Wii U, and he will be getting an Xbox One and a PS4)

I on the other hand totally disagreed with him as, I (A Hardcore Gamer) will not be buying a Xbox One and could care less about buying a Wii U.. - I will be getting a PS4

-But I'm afraid he's right causal gamers won't care, they will just adopt the new no used games the always online madness, the paying for XboxLive which just seems really stupid to me these days, but whatever - Get what works for you..

What is clear though is Microsoft has never been about the consumer, they have always been about what makes money.. if this makes money but hurts consumers -who cares just do it- And that's why they fail..

Windows Phone -fail - Windows 8 -fail - Xbox One -soon to be fail.. LoL

It will however still sell, don't get me wrong, consumers tend to consume first then think about it after... the backlash will hurt Microsoft in the long run though - Causal Gamers are quick to jump ship when you do them dirty -

Your loyal fan-base - It takes them a little longer to jump ship. -but if you ask me the Xbox Reveal could not have gone much worst...

They better come hard at E3 or I see a lot of people staying with their 360 a lot longer then planned.

First of all, good article! Now, the PC is also my console of choice seconded by my PS3, and until the Kinect came out, the 360. Yes it's true that the majority of Xbox gamers play these games in particular. Now the Halo and Gears fans I can understand as these to games have their own world and lore that can be fun to discover. "Crap of Duty" does not. The first games came out as a response to EA's early Medal of Honor games and copying the formula while at the same time improving some aspects, had some commercial success. The game changer as we all now was the first MW. A great game, with a good story and somewhat interesting characters. what followed were not bad games by all means, they were just over-hyped and have been ever since. This franchise is a clear example of "Don't hate the game, hate the player", because the player was the one that bought MW2, MW3, Black Ops even though roughly nothing changed. This industry like some many others is shaped by its customers, in other words "WE ARE WHAT WE PLAY".

@ Everyone above. When you launch a system and give a media briefing not all information comes out at once. If you look at CES for example they announce products but not all information on the product is available until a later date. Before you make your decision remember one thing Xbox had to come out swinging showing off the console first. After all, when you go to a dealer to purchase a car you have to know what kind of car you want and what it can do before you make your decision. That leads to getting the keys to start the car of your choice. As of right now Xbox has that Porsche that will make you want to get the keys (which is software) to start that car. When I saw Sony PS4 conference they gave me keys (which is software) but no car to drive, just features that I can plainly find in any device. Also to all who nitpick about the games. Remember for years people have plain out claimed that Xbox 360 has fallen off on new IP's. So MS stating that they are changing that with Xbox One is it really a bad thing? I saw at sony show more multiplatform games then I did exclusives. Guess what all of those games are also coming to XBox One and many were shown via cutscenes. Your choice for a system should be the one that caters to you period. Right Now I Like Remedy, I like Turn 10, I like 343, EA has always delivered and so on. I also love Xbox live and a few apps that I use. I get that everyone wanted to see games more then the system's functionality. I also agree that they should have shown off a little more. I disagree with the wave of hate because they actually told you days before the show that the story will be told in 2 events. Right now Xbox one is unveiled and the functionality of there TV elements as well. Xbox has said that E3 is all about games. Meaning less talk at a Gamers show about tv and more about games. It is the competition(Sony with PS4) who will have the opposite effect because they have to show the console, how it will work with games and at the same time share space for psvita and ps3. So why not wait till E3 to see how you feel, take that with what they have showcased and it if does not impress you, by all means continue feeding the media and create what is truly killing gaming.

Fallout 4's 'next gen' update is over 14 gigs, breaks modded saves, & doesn't change much at all

We were expecting problems with mod support, but there are a lot of other issues.

isarai9h ago

Wow what the actual hell 🤣🤣🤣

just_looken9h ago

This is why you get the GOG version on gog you can select the version of the game to download.

On pc fallout 4 fallout new vegas and skyrim are all broken on steam because they all got the same "next gen" update.

Skyrim dec 2023
https://www.pcgamer.com/sky...

Can not find new vegas but anyone that modded it knows the script extender there was also broken

Valkyrye7h ago

Not accidental, they want modders to stop modding their older games to force them to mod Shitfield.

just_looken5h ago

There doing the same on starfield with a mods store and blocking mods

There goal is like blizzard and what they did with fallout 76 you make mods they can sell and you become a slave.

On skyrim they have "trusted" mod devs now basically a badge that lets your mod on the store you get a crumb of the sale when someone buys it.

Inverno4h ago

lol to the disagrees, the last Skyrim update broke mods too. They've been trying to kill mods to monetize them in creation club for years, it's not a stretch that they purposely put out patches just to break free mods.

porkChop2h ago

The disagrees are from people who have common sense. They aren't trying to kill mods. Most mods for any game will break with a new update because they rely on files/code that have been changed. This isn't new. Even with Bethesda this would happen way before the creation club. Mod support is literally one of the things that got Bethesda to where they are, and they're one of the only devs that releases comprehensive mod tools for each of their games.

Chocoburger3h ago

Over 14 GBs and doesn't change much at all? What? Taking up that much drive space for a pathetic 'remastering' is shameful.

Par for Bethesda.

Aussiesummer2h ago

It's not a remaster, it's a next gen update.

badz1492h ago

LOL people are actually expecting massive improvements or something? From Bethesda?? the same people who released Skyrim multiple times and the all look like shit? THAT Bethesda? are people for real?

Profchaos1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

The ps5 version doesn't change a ton but from my small playtime it's enough to make me want to replay it just to have it running at 60.

A side note to this my PS4 version no longer boots after it's "update" so I guess that's what it feels like to own a Bethesda game on PC

Why Monopolies In Gaming Must Not Be Allowed

As of right now, there are no monopolies in the games industry, and for the sake of the medium as a whole, they never should either.

thorstein7h ago

Shouldn't be allowed in any field.

Inverno4h ago

And yet the biggest tech companies in America are essentially that. They buy up all the small comps only to kill them off and steal what they have, and if they can't buy em they bleed them to death.

jwillj2k43h ago

Eventually they’ll realize the value is with the employee not the company. Buying an IP means nothing if the people who contributed are let go. They’ll get it one day.

MrCrimson2h ago

tech is different because they buy threats and then kill them. Twitter bought Vine and did nothing with it. Despite people seemingly liking it. Could've had tiktok a decade before bytedance. go figure.

Zenzuu3h ago

Monopolies shouldn't be allowed regardless. Not just for gaming.

MrCrimson2h ago

They buy IPs not talent. That's why these buyouts never work and the IPs die. Right now it's too expensive to develop games - but I expect that to shift maybe as AI tools can make it easier. The best games have been indie games for awhile as big developers fuck their ips to death with "games as a service" -
