David Cage: “I don’t make games to make money”

Beyond: Two Souls is more about its writer’s personal journey than Quantic Dream wanting to turn a dime. David Cage speaks to Patrick Garratt in Paris.

MariaHelFutura4012d ago

Of course he wants to make money, it's his job. But, I think he means money is not his first priority while designing a game (which is good IMO). It's just a bad way to say it.

PopRocks3594012d ago

I'm curious as to how high his position at the company is. Isn't he only the writer or creative director at that studio? If that's so, it makes sense that he's in it for the creation and not the profits. Profits typically fall more in line with the CEOs and suits of the publishers.

DigitalRaptor4012d ago (Edited 4012d ago )

He's the founder and co-CEO of Quantic. He's also writer, director of performance capture, creative director and partial designer. So he's a one of the creative driving forces behind the game.

His partner in Quantic is Guillaume de Fondaumiere, who is co-CEO, CFO (finance) and executive producer. So he is the guy in charge of the company's financial health, budgeting and overall direction.

-

And like MariaHelFutura said, he means that making games is his passion before it's a job, but it goes without saying that a job is important to him as it provides a person's income. He's an artist at heart and true artists accept the fact today money might not always be flowing, but their art is more important to them.

That's why David doesn't make shooters.

@ people below telling him to shut up and that he's an attention whore: get a clue. It's the journalists asking the questions, he's just answering them.

PopRocks3594012d ago

I see. Thanks for clearing that up.

shivvy244012d ago

yea they are being funded by sony so his not really worried about money

nukeitall4012d ago

Yup!

A lot of these "artists" keep saying, they aren't in it for the money, yet when sh*t hits the fan, they are the first to run.

Point being, nobody survives without money. Even the beggar in the street corner is indirectly surviving due to money.

What I think Cage is trying to say is "I make games out of passion first, and the earnings is just to support us".

Godmars2904012d ago

More accurately, his difference is likely the difference between making one million for a good and flawless game, and making eight million for a buggy and flawed title COD.

Walker4012d ago

David, stop talking anymore, please:)!

Enemy4012d ago

Not like Cage is asking for the attention. He doesn't care. People are interested in Beyond: Two Souls and idiots think Cage magically appears on N4G as if he isn't being quoted.

Note: websites quote him because they want to, not because he's asking.

"David, stop talking anymore, please:)!" is the dumbest comment of the week.

JoGam4012d ago

I think it was sarcasm people.

xXBlondieVanHarlowXx4012d ago

You just read the title didn't you?... Here's the full quote

“I don’t do work for hire. I don’t make games to make money. I make games by passion, because I want to share something, because I have something to tell.”

I would try to explain that he is a very passionate artist & whatnot but chances are you aren't gonna read this far anyways lol.

jc485734012d ago

I remember he shared a little about his life at one point.

MikeMyers4012d ago (Edited 4012d ago )

If his games don't make money he would have a hard time making the games he wants. Thankfully Heavy Rain made a profit for Sony which in turn greenlit Beyond. There are a ton of developers who make games out of passion. What often gets lost along the way are publishers who are more focused on turning a profit and often times have their own input in the development..

David Cage is still an employee which is why he was told to have Move support and cancel/delay the DLC for Heavy Rain. Sony wants to make money and sell hardware. So even though he says he's not in it for the money Sony will not invest in projects they think will fail commercially.

KillrateOmega4011d ago (Edited 4011d ago )

"I would try to explain that he is a very passionate artist & whatnot but chances are you aren't gonna read this far anyways lol."

Oh, I did read that far and all I gathered from your comment is that you're naïve. Here, let me insert a 'lol' as well ; you know, just to be derisive :)

It doesn't matter what his primary motivation is, do you honestly believe that he's not doing any of this to earn a living for both him and his family? That he's not enjoying that 5-6 figure salary he's getting as the founder and CEO of Quantic Dream?

It's very easy to say that you're not in something for the money when you don't have to worry about making a living. And for every person like him who says something like this, there are probably 100 other people who don't get to say this because their games aren't making that kind of money.

I recognize that he is a very passionate man and that money isn't his first priority, but to believe him whole-heartedly when he's says that he's not in it for the money at all is a very naïve thing to do.

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

solideagle7h ago

you should apply in MS PR team buddy, I think you will do a great job in my humble opinion :)

Sonic18814h ago

I thought darthv72 and Obscure_Observer already work for Microsoft 🤔

dveio4h ago

MS: "Xbox services and content without AB up 1%, with AB up 62%. Hardware down 31%. In total a loss of 350 mill."

darthv72: "Seems about right."

MS: "Excuse m ..."

darthv72: "I don't hardly play on my consoles directly."

MS:

Cacabunga7h ago

I can tell people like you are an absolute minority..

If service is up means their fans and fanboys accepted this model and subscribed to it. The near future you will see a big decline because the service is saturated.

shinoff21836h ago

But that's been ms for years. When things aren't going their way they try to change the way things are said. For instance console sales are down, they stop telling how many sold instead telling us how many hours spent in halo or headshots. So it makes sense console sales down just say people are playing on more devices then previous. What they won't say is how many xbox players jumped ship to ps5.

Cacabunga5h ago

Hardware sales are so bad that Sony and Nintendo are blowing the sales off the water with their hardware.

If Xbox are losers, others aren’t..
Xbox already tried everything with Xbox live then subscriptions went down so much that they had to find something else. Their fans subscribed then reached saturation rather quickly.

Hardware and exclusive games is where it’s at! Keep gamers excited, announce decent software and people will support you

itsmebryan1h ago

@shin
Well keep it simple Sony 's operating income is down 26% and Microsoft's is up 32%. No MS spin there, just facts. 😉
Cheers

Xbox hardware revenue tanks to lowest point of Xbox Series generation

Profchaos9h ago

I'm not surprised surface is struggling they aren't relevant anymore

XBManiac8h ago

Too expensive hardware when others offer the same or more for less? Good work, Green Team.

SimpleDad8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

"Despite some early successes for Xbox games on rival platforms, Xbox hardware is down by a massive 31 percent this quarter."
"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.
Oh and Microsoft will be fine. Windows, Office and Cloud are growing with each pc purchase.

purple1018h ago

Activision: "we gonna need a bigger rucksack/backpack please"

Microsoft: "why's that"

Activision: "to carry yo' weak ass'

Profchaos7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Top brass have also wanted to start seeing returns on the 100 billion they have put into various Xbox related moves so seeing more multiplatform games is highly likely especially from abk

It's basically saying that PlayStation is the reason Xbox is afloat right now thinks to Ps5 versions of COD

Kornholic6h ago

So basically PS and PC gamers' money is keeping Xbox on life support.

Why Monopolies In Gaming Must Not Be Allowed

As of right now, there are no monopolies in the games industry, and for the sake of the medium as a whole, they never should either.

thorstein19h ago

Shouldn't be allowed in any field.

Inverno15h ago

And yet the biggest tech companies in America are essentially that. They buy up all the small comps only to kill them off and steal what they have, and if they can't buy em they bleed them to death.

jwillj2k414h ago

Eventually they’ll realize the value is with the employee not the company. Buying an IP means nothing if the people who contributed are let go. They’ll get it one day.

MrCrimson13h ago

tech is different because they buy threats and then kill them. Twitter bought Vine and did nothing with it. Despite people seemingly liking it. Could've had tiktok a decade before bytedance. go figure.

Zenzuu14h ago

Monopolies shouldn't be allowed regardless. Not just for gaming.

MrCrimson13h ago

They buy IPs not talent. That's why these buyouts never work and the IPs die. Right now it's too expensive to develop games - but I expect that to shift maybe as AI tools can make it easier. The best games have been indie games for awhile as big developers fuck their ips to death with "games as a service" -
