It seems as though the pre-orders for the OUYA in retail stores is very low. The release date of June 4th appears to be in question, and GameStop employees appear to know nothing at all.
From systems that could keep your beer cool, to oddities trying to get in on the popularity of VHS and laserdisc, you’ve got some very, very weird video game consoles out there.
I had the LaserActive... it was a nice collectors piece but not very practical. Especially when it came to needing recapping. I think i paid all of about $50 for the floor model from an incredible Universe back in the day. I ended up selling it many years later for $300 at the time due to it needing a new laser and the aforementioned recapping.
An honorable mention not on the list would be the VM Labs Nuon. It basically looked like any regular DVD player but it had ports on it for controllers to play specific games. one of which is still exclusive to it with Tempest 3000. It also offered nuon enhanced DVD movies with extra content not accessible by regular players.
"It would be great if people had to buy more of the thing," says guy who makes money selling the thing.
If they did then collectors wouldn’t be getting f***** over with discless collectors editions
No shock, GameStop is alive because of trading. If they don't have used games on their shelves they are absolutely donezo.
Well of course the GS boss thinks this... that's their bread and butter business. That and funco pops and clothing, though those two were added as a means to supplement the decline in people buying used games or even new games. GS just sucks overall when it comes to gaming. I buy my physical stuff on Amazon or Best Buy.
As for "requiring" disc drives... nah. Not anymore, but i like having them as an option. They had a means back when games actually ran off the discs and were more/less complete. Now they are incomplete and the disc is really an installer with a license to play. If you want to change games you have to take out the disc and put in another. Its more convenient to just use digital. I have been into digital for years now and when the PSPortal comes along i wont even have to go into my game room. I will just play my PS5 from my couch downstairs. I have a bunch of digital installed games to my 5... I'm all set.
Gamingbible writes: "Luckily, if you’re living in the US you can trade your Xbox into Gamestop, where you’ll receive a hefty amount of cash as well as a $50 bonus for certain customers, just short of enough to buy the PS5."
At this point in time If I didn't own a PS5 I would have done this in a heartbeat but I had already acquired a PS5 first before I acquired an XBSX.
I'll stick to keeping both. Gamestop though... seems kind of desperate to take in Series X units. What could they be plotting???
I just want some games for my series X I have both since release and after weighing the offerings in PS Essentials to Gamepass I quickly realized I Owned anything of worth in both catalogs. And, the things I didn't I didn't see as justifiable for maintaining both subs.
Since then my series X is a legacy machine that I play my old games on and that's it. 3 years ago I really thought from that Xbox showcase we were going to have some great games by now. Instead, it's just been a lot of meh
The Ouya won't make Gamestop or GAME much money compared to a real platform. I can't wait to see this garbage fail. Even hardcore supporters are bound to be enraged when a new edition comes out in 8-12 months that makes the current unit obsolete.
Lol it is ridiculous to expect them to know of a machine with very low demand and hype outside of the net . Ouya fans are in clear lala land if they believe the general public knows about it and and the retail system will cater much to such a niche .
It will have its followers , but still will remain a niche
There's definitely a market out there for it. I just checked on Kickstarter for it again and most of the backers get an OUYA anyway.
I don't see it doing very well for people who don't keep up to date with consoles, games, etc. These will be your average consumers that might pop into a game store to buy a game for a family member or something. They won't know what an OUYA is.
I'm not interested in the console. If I want to play Android games, I will use my smartphone. It's something I will have for the rest of my life or until they become obsolete and something else takes over... I don't really sit down and spend hours upon hours playing games on my phone. I probably have 2 or 3 games and after a couple of weeks I will uninstall it. They are mainly there to pass the time for like 5 or 10 minutes when you are in the car, on the train, on the bus, etc.
Games like FF3 can be played on the NDS and PSP which a lot of gamers will most likely own.
Thing is who is giving up there Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft branded consoles for a system that plays the same games as there phones?
Same thing with that steam console if you have a computer do you buy a console that only plays games that you can play on your super computer?
Even if it is something you plug up to your TV.
The general public doesn't know crap about Ouya. I don't know anyone (who isn't a passionate gamer) who even knows it exists. I see why they created Ouya and there might even be enough people who want something like that but internet-only marketing won't do them any good.
Overall, I don't see a future for the console and I'm pretty happy about that because I see mobile-/app-games as cancer to the industry.
