How Sony Won The Next Gen – Reader’s Feature

Metro: ''A GameCentral reader explains why he thinks Microsoft has already lost the battle for hearts and minds with Sony’s PlayStation 4.''

Th4Freak4031d ago (Edited 4031d ago )

Response to your desagree (I posted it here because there's a character limit in the Agrees comment box): I understand that this is your opinion and I also respect it, however you're using a sensationalist title to get hits in your site. This type of articles only make troubles in N4G, I reported this article http://n4g.com/news/1230702... for the same reason im reporting this one (it almost has the same title actually), people downvoted me saying that it wasnt going to bring problems, they approved it and look how it ended, even the author apologized later. I'd approve your submition if the title would actually reflect your opinon but it's not. A appropriate title would be "How I Think Sony Won The Next Gen", because in that way you're making the users know that its your opinion and isn't necessarily a fact.

AngelicIceDiamond4031d ago

@Freak whatever you got your point across. Sony already "Won" because MS has bad rumors, WOW.

MS hasn't confirmed, denied, nor announced anything what so ever. Lets wait and see what MS has in store instead of judging and making claims/assumption.

There is no viable reason in the article that tells me that Sony won anything. If the the rumors are true regarding Kinect specifically then I can see how Sony would pull the lead in a great way. But until then, chill and wait.

Th4Freak4031d ago (Edited 4031d ago )

That's exactly the reason im against this kind of articles, people is using titles like this to get hits in their websites and what annoys me is that they don't give a thing about what the consequences will be in this community which are very clear btw (trash talk, fanboys war, bubbles down, etc). Just look at the comments below and look what happend to the article I linked before.

"There is no viable reason in the article that tells me that Sony won anything"

It doesn't have to do with the content of the article but the title, he's not reflecting his intention of opinion on it, hes saying it as a fact, so as you said before its too soon to make a call so why doesn't the author make a appropriate title and save the community from this headache?

Chaostar4031d ago

"Therein lays the problem for me; the next Xbox is already rumoured to be expensive, but the inclusion of Kinect 2.0 will add greatly to the cost."

This is the part that really irks me. While I have no problem with Kinect itself, I just don't want it personally, so why should I have to fork out more for my Xbox 720?

matgrowcott4031d ago

Because it's going to be a required component?

I'm sick of reading people saying things like "but I don't want Kinect!" It shows a really short, closed minded view. You know the reason the current Kinect is so lame? Why it's filled with rushed out casual titles?

Because that's who bought the Kinect. They got it with Dance Central in mind and never bought anything else.

The difference that EVERYBODY having the peripheral will make is going to be huge. Developers will basically be forced to use it in interesting ways. Microsoft had the choice of damning Kinect 2.0 to exactly the same fate as the current Kinect, or they could support it. They've chosen the latter, and it's completely the right move.

cayleee4031d ago

Consoles are one size fits all. You dont like it well tough, little Charlie down the block cant get enough of it.

Jek_Porkins4031d ago

That was actually a very intelligent post, I'd also like to point out that while it is probable and smart for Microsoft to launch the next Xbox with a new Kinect, the PS4 has a similar camera that could very well launch with that console as well.

Kinect was limited in what it could do, but it still offered some fun and entertaining games, and the features in games like Forza 4, Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim in particular were pretty good.

If they can get the specs up to snuff and do 1:1 then I think it opens up a ton of doors, I actually think Kinct 2.0 will be more or less used for navigation and voice controls next gen, keeping the 720 in the futuristic type of feel, and staying competitive with similar products.

I just know this is N4G, if it isn't one thing people would find fault with from Microsoft it'd be another. It will never stop, people take console wars so seriously and don't understand that some people might not like the console maker they like, or vice versa.

dcortz20274031d ago

LOL many people chose the Xbox 360 over the PS3 because of it's cheaper price tag, with Kinect being optional. So when Sony included Blu-Ray in the PS3 it was blasphemy and total not needed, but when Microsoft is pushing Kinect down everyone's throat it's okay? Hypocrites. I don't think we should be saying Sony won next-gen as the PS4 and Xbox 720 aren't even out yet, but Sony are in a better position with the near PS4 launch then they were when they launched the PS3.

matgrowcott4031d ago

@dcortz2027

Hey, dcortz. I don't want to go all hipster on you, but I was saying Kinect was going to fail to engage the hardcore gamer back when it was still Natal. Not just on message boards, but I was getting paid to tell everybody how much it was going to suck.

Not everybody who defends something a company does is a fanboy. The sooner you learn that, the better you'll find conversing online.

raytraceme4031d ago (Edited 4031d ago )

The ps3 was expensive yet in the long run it has been the cheapest hd console to date depending on the gamer. The xbox was $400 and with 6 years of live.. lets say $40 a year it comes out to be $640. The ps3 had a base cost of $600 which included backwards compatability, a larger harddrive, built in wifi, free online, and bluray. Cost wise we all know which one is the cheaper one.

Speaking of kinect it will never be a good option for core gamers unless they get a navigation like controller for character movement.

I like the move because of how it can support any game out there because of how similar the controller layout is to the ds3. Move also has the best catalogue of core games which include Bioshock Infinite, Resistance 3, Infamous 2, Heavy Rain, counter strike, little big planet, killzone, dust 514, mlb the show, and Portal 2. Give me a list of kinect supported titles that come even close to the support move has.

insomnium24031d ago

@mat

I get what you are saying. The thing that was hot (used in arguments aaaaaalll the time) back in the day was that MS gave people choises.

PS3 was hated for making people buy all the bells and whistles.

It's funny how the situation changes.

Jaqen_Hghar4031d ago

Just like how every developer used waggle in such interesting ways this gen right? A man loved SS but it would have been a lot better without forcing motion fighting and flying.

andrewsqual4031d ago

Wow just wow. I can't believe there are idiots who still actually believe that Kinect is a good thing. Newsflash, developers were forced to use Kinect. Mass Effect 3 had to have its game cover ruined with that horrible purple "Better with Kinect" Banner. At least you admit that Microsoft damned Kinect, they even wouldn't put that purple banner on the cover their 2 biggest last games for the 360, Halo 4 and Gears of War Judgment because they were terrified that they would scare off their last hardcore customers

MikeMyers4031d ago

"PS3 was hated for making people buy all the bells and whistles.

You're right, the PS2 cost the same as the original Xbox ($299) and the Xbox had more bells and whistles. Then the Xbox 360 came out for $299 without a hard drive and $399 with one while the PS3 came out for $499 and $599 but included a bluray drive. Now it looks like the PS4 will all come out with a hard drive with no official price and nothing else attached included officially and no official wording on the next Xbox as to what will be included. So what exactly changed in the situation again?

matgrowcott4031d ago (Edited 4031d ago )

@andrew

Seriously though, your post is exactly what I'm talking about. "THE CURRENT KINECT SUCKS SO I'M OFFENDED MICROSOFT MIGHT FORCE ME TO HAVE ONE WITH THE NEXT XBOX."

If Microsoft are building the OS around the use of Kinect, if everybody who has that console has the ability to use their voice or subtle movements to control certain aspects of a game, it'll be used more often. When EVERYBODY has something, it's no longer a niche item. When EVERYBODY has something, it's no longer something that developers can ignore, because it's no longer only a small group that has access to that feature.

What part of that don't you understand? If Kinect comes with Durango, developers can build features for a game without having to have a controller alternative, because it'll no longer be an optional extra. If it were optional, Kinect 2.0 would end up another place for games to go to die. With full support, that's not going to happen.

Chaostar4031d ago

@Mattgrowcott

Wait, so not liking Kinect means you're closed minded now?

It's not like I just dismissed it outright, I gave it more than a fair chance. I understand that better support will come for it if it's bundled with every console but there's no guarantee it will be good. I'd much rather save the money on the initial purchase than be forced to take a chance. If something good does come from it then people will buy it.

As it stands I'm not interested, that doesn't make me closed minded just careful about what I spend my hard earned money on.

Since we have no information on the new Kinect I have to base my opinion on what's available. It isn't set in stone, when we hear more I could change my mind.

MikeMyers4031d ago (Edited 4031d ago )

Outside of a few key titles like Kinect Sports and Dance Central the Kinect device hasn't really shown to be a good adversary to gaming. Where it can be utilized better is by supporting the controller. Games that could benefit from certain motion commands and voice recognition.

The first incarnation of Kinect was limited due to it's resolution, points of interaction and response time. There is no way a game like Virtua Fighter would be even playable with it. The counter attacks people can do would be too slow for Kinect to simply repeat properly. I imagine Kinect 2 could finally realize the possibilities but so far Microsoft hasn't shown gaming is actually better with Kinect like their ads suggest.

Games that are tailored for it like Star Wars and Fable are more of a on-rails gameplay. It;s just too cumbersome to have a camera try and do the same functions that a controller can. Of course some people will give up some accuracy for a more immersive experience. I don't think people really cared about how accurate Wii Tennis was but they enjoyed it because it was a different way of playing. This is what some people forget, not everyone is so serious when it comes to gaming. You can have a lot of fun playing Kinect Sports but it's in no way meant to be a full sim. sports game. Just like I never expected Forza to control better than my steering wheel or controller. It's designed to break down some of the barriers people have using controllers and all of the buttons. To me it's easy to use but some like auto assist features or even auto braking. That defeats the challenge but for others it's too challenging.

Gaming should be approachable but not at the cost of alienating the core gamer. Microsoft needs to build and grow itself in gaming because it was obvious when Kinect first came out resources internally were shifted into making Kinect games. That's not the way to do it. You have to still support the core market while also trying new markets. Hopefully they have learned that moving forward on the next Xbox. We'll just have to wait and see.

MikeMyers4031d ago

So far Sony has been hitting all the right notes and fixing any issues they had on the PS3. If they can price it competitively, have new IP's at launch and not delay the system to 2014 in certain areas it looks like they have a winner on their hands.

The Wii U outside of a few titles really hasn't impressed me much. I'm sure we'll see some great titles at E3 but once again Nintendo doesn't know how to space their big titles out or have firm release dates.

The next Xbox so far is very questionable. How will Kinect play into it and will everyone have to pay for it? Will it finally showcase some real games the core gamer is excited for? Will Microsoft get busy creating new and exciting IP's? Will they offer free online gaming or continue having a pay wall with apps and media services all bundled together so consumers don't have a choice?

I was totally unbiased leading into the release of the Wii U and I will do the same for the next Xbox, but so far the PS4 is getting me the most excited.

You'll be getting 50% stuff you don't want and 50% gaming box....

I've always had an xbox but I don't really know this year. For the first time ever I'm leaning towards Sony just based on what their goals are for this gen.

As long as the New Dual Shock controller doesn't suck like the past 3 then I'm definitely getting it.

The PS4 controller needs to be more responsive and not feel cheap and floaty.

Jaqen_Hghar4031d ago

While a man doesn't agree with your assessment of DS1-3, he believes you'd be more satisfied with the very diverse and quality lineup PS exclusives and getting PS+ for less than you pay for Live with the hundreds of dollars of content it gives out.

SoapShoes4031d ago

What... The 360 controller feels way cheaper than the PS3 controller. With its smooth plastics and such whereas the DS3 has a better texture.

LostDjinn4031d ago

It's not even released yet.
I hate to bring reality down on the author but FFS get a grip.

Zhipp4031d ago

I know. They could at least wait until the Nextbox's official reveal.

BattleReach4031d ago

Shit article, the next Xbox isn't shown yet, it isn't even official announced. Someone please stop this 'Sony won Next Gen mess.

Rusty5154031d ago

Lmao. Even though I love Playstation and would probably go as far to call myself a fanboy, I gotta admit this site is so biased to PS. "How Sony Won the next-gen." Neither console have been released. Not to mention the 720 hasn't even been revealed yet lol.

G20WLY4031d ago

Assuming you're talking about Metro, you couldn't be more wrong - they always underrate Sony exclusives compared to the average critic score, it's maddness!

Such a good game to me. Crazy how different peoples opinions can get.

Crows9017m ago(Edited 16m ago)

For me it wasn't that surprising. There was some bad press before. There's also the matter and element of a person's disposition when trying out a certain game. Sometimes you're just not really into the type of game that you're playing so you put it down because you don't like it. Not necessarily because it's a bad game but because you're just not up for something like this. Reviewers have a tough because no matter what they feel like playing they've got to play what's releasing.

I have many times gone back to games that I put down only to thoroughly enjoy them the second time around because either there wasn't another exciting game coming out around the same time or I just had no other games to play and haven't played that type of game in a while. I'm not the type of person that can just play a souls game through all this iterations one after the other without getting burnt out on the formula.

In my opinion this game was great from the start. Some bugs here and there but nothing worse than the most AAA releases during the same time after and before. All I did was wait one week and I had a phenomenal time with the game. No other zombie survival game comes close to how I thoroughly enjoyed this one

Leeroyw18m ago

Second act of that game far surpassed the first. Which is why people felt it didn't live up to the hype of the trailers. Personally I loved it. But it was a slog to get your bike and weapons up to skill.
