Importing is something you haven't tried, that's unfortunate

Remember those games you really wanted to play that either took forever to localize or never even made it to English-speaking shores? If you're a fan of Japanese RPGs, you've already shed a tear. One franchise in particular that's very close to my heart is the Tales of series, and over half the games end up on a different console or never get translated to English. The only remaining option for those of us into these kinds of games is to import, but the idea is often outweighed with uncertainty.

only reason i wont do it is because theres no translations for the tales games yet.. Otherwise i wouldve got tales of vesperia, innocence, & hearts for ps3 & vita by now.. I dont want to use my good potions or get lost in menus trying to sell & buy equipment.. Plus the stories are awesome in those games

had gotten the original mega cd before it came to the US and when he did, he also got the Lunar game. While it was all in JP, he did manage to figure out the basics and beat the game.

But that was then and this is now (obviously) and the amount of text and possibly audible instructions in the cut scenes of current games can be overwhelming. so i can understand your situation.

i personally have several import titles. Especially for older systems like the pc engine and neo geo cd. My favorite is actually Batman for the mega drive. The game was completely in english but because of contractual lockout from nintendo, sunsoft couldnt release it in the US. They did AFTER they (and several other 3rd parties) sued nintendo for the right to release games on other platforms in the US.

there is partial translations since u can get the script for the xbox 360 version of vesperia, or the scripts/guides for tales of innocence, but since they are for the old games, any new conent wouldnt be translated, as for items, things like healing hp/tp or even status effect would be easy due to them either having that in name like 30%hp&tp or when pressing an item it would automatically go for the one in need of it like revive or antidote etc, as for the rest doing something specail it would be about saving then trying out i guess?

either way though for people from europe importing costs a fortune which is sad.

I really enjoyed this article, it was a good read. This quote gave me a chuckle, because it's true!:

"Pretty much every JRPG involves the player’s characters going from barely being able to lift a sword to killing God"

LOL...exaggeration but I get your just making a point. No one can Kill God. Don't drink Satan's cool-aide he is just trying to recruit you (backwards recruit)

He probably only has the grape kind anyways. All the folk up in heaven surely hog all the good flavours.

Final Fantasy 15 the ultimate delayed game with delayed story dlc shoveled in at the last second. Doesn’t ring the gratifying bell when I see that stupid car at all. Article+thumbnail is like describing a 5star meal while watching your cat clean its backside.

More specifically I would say JRPGs are progressive gratification. Basically like listening to prog music vs anything else which imo is the best. Even if a JRPG is all about the journey, generally speaking JRPGs keep getting better as opposed to other games which usually have their high points come in either too soon, or the best parts just aren't nearly as impactful.

Also don't forget the direct comparison that the old Square Enix president made. He said Western players like TWITCH games and eastern players love Cerebral games. Now it was taken as a racist slam. But he meant it as one of the reasons outside of development time and cost return on investment(ROI). But he had a true point people here are TRAINED to like instant stuff. And people there are trained to like delayed over the top stuff. It is not a intelligence slam. I'm glad I LOVE the later gratification! Because it is way better!

I like JRPG's for the big anime tiddies.

10 PlayStation Vita Software Missed Opportunities

VGChartz's Adam Cartwright: "Many would argue – and I wouldn’t really disagree – that the PlayStation Vita never really had a killer app. There wasn’t that one piece of software that helped change the console’s fortunes. The closest we got was arguably Persona 4 Golden, an early release that received huge critical acclaim, but it was part of a niche series and as such its sales impact from a hardware perspective was muted.

There were missed opportunities along the way, as certain titles had the potential to change the Vita’s fortunes, but the way the final product was delivered (if indeed it was delivered at all) left a lot to be desired and so they didn’t reach their full potential. It’s these games I’m aiming to look at this in this article – 10 games that were missed opportunities on Vita. I’m not saying that every release I’ll be talking out here had the potential to be a “killer app”, but if they had been executed a little better they would have undoubtedly been a key factor in helping the console reach a wider audience."

Still thinking about the that last of us 2 multiplayer missed opportunity

isarai1681d ago

My soul still aches over the idea of making 3D Dot Game Heroes a Vita series never happening after the dev studio expressed interest in doing so. Could've been a flagship for it, or at least carried it a bit further.

The vita contributed to the ps3 having less support from Japanese devs. I hope sony keep focusing on one console at time like they are now in the future

I’ve been hooked on the series ever since playing Tales of Xillia

jznrpg1738d ago

I hope they remaster or port a lot of the older games of the series to PS4/PS5

“Tales series is considered one of the top three Japanese RPG series next to RPG giants like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.”

How you gonna talk about the top three JRPG franchises and not mention Pokémon, the top selling series in the genre?

This is how the top JRPG series stack up

1. Pokémon - 340M
2. Final Fantasy - 144M
3. Dragon Quest - 78M
4. Monster Hunter - 52M
5. Kingdom Hearts - 30M
6. Souls - 25M
7. Tales of - 20M
