Apple presents biggest threat to home consoles, say game luminaries

Yahoo Games: Two video game VIPs are cautioning that the company could have a much larger and potentially devastating impact on the home console market.

Valve Software co-founder Gabe Newell and Nat Brown, who was one of the first engineers on Microsoft's Xbox project, have issued warnings about Apple's potential threat. The alerts come amid analyst speculation that Apple may hold an Apple TV-related special event next month.

Listen home consoles will always be around, games made for PS/Xbox will never be outdone by games on iOS.. Plus i think next gen we will see alot of iOS/andriod games on the PSN and xbox live... maybe thats why Sony is going with a touchpad type of controller.. think about temple run on PSN being played with the touch pad DS4? =)

P.S. console will never die or be in danger.. and idk why ppl would want it to die?? we just have to keep supporting the great games we have on these consoles.. bcuz GTA/FIFA/Madden/COD. most genres for me are not fun with touch controlled and it just doesnt feel the same.

PhantomT14124115d ago

I agree, for me it's two different markets.

adorie4115d ago (Edited 4115d ago )

I've been following Apple for the last 6 months.
I'm not business savvy, but I'm intelligent enough to see common sense.

As we know Apple is sitting on 10's of billions.
We know their line-up has started to stagnate
We know their share price has devalued

Some interesting people within the industry(gaming) have come out and expressed concerns about Apple legitimately joining the industry, just to ruin it(subjectivity)

What am I getting at here?
Apple has been getting aggressive, towards their competitiors and within their own company.
Should Apple decide this industry is something they want to expand towards, then we're in for things we probably won't like.

People here are too complacent with how things are or were.. all the back-patting and reassurance doesn't mean squat to the tune of 65+ billion in cash.

I'll probably get disagrees, and that's ok. But even I can see them as a threat to what people call "The Big 3"

nirwanda4115d ago

I think the biggest threat to apple is Nvidea, if all the new android smart phones adopt the new chip then you have a stable standard games can be based around.

DeadlyFire4113d ago (Edited 4113d ago )

I think personally Apple has a chance to destroy the Android gaming consoles coming up with their setup with Apple TV. Its a small box under $100 bucks at $99. It has no more power than Ouya(12 Gflop max) or it would cost more. Cloud gaming on it could happen, but its not 100% with bandwidth still a large concern for that.

panbit864115d ago

Yeah right... because angry birds and fruit ninja is the "future" of gaming! wtf?!

CommonSenseGamer4115d ago

Yeah, cause smartphone and tablet gaming is all about angry birds.

My prediction is that both the next box and ps4 will sell less than their predecessors. Why? Because casual gamers are needed to ensure consoles sell ongoing. Those casual gamers have more and more options for gaming in the years ahead.

classic2004115d ago (Edited 4115d ago )

Actually casual got many choices for a while now and it as not stop console or even PC steam sales lol.

You make it sound like casual gamers care what is out there, if they did care then they would have joined forces with the nintendo fans and get some wiiu dont you think.

Zynga don't look too good also

Hicken4115d ago

Actually, that's just about right.

The majority of smartphone gaming is simple little stuff like Doodle Jump. That's not sufficient enough to sustain the gaming industry. Hell, the casual market, period, isn't enough. It's caused a large boom in growth, but there are ONLY two options for the casual crowd:

Give up and move on to something else the same way they moved into gaming,

OR

Become core gamers, and want more than just little time wasters.

The large number of casual gamers WILL NOT sustain the industry, because their interest is only casual. It's passing, not serious, and not something you should ever rely on for any lengthy period of time.

Casual gamers HAVEN'T been needed thus far; why are they suddenly needed now? To keep up the same level of sales we've been seeing? It's called a "bubble" for a reason.

YOU hope casual gaming becomes bigger, because it's all YOU want to play. Casual gaming has its place, but it's not as a major influential factor in the industry.

Sorry.

MaxXAttaxX4115d ago

You're totally right. That mobile Mass Effect Infiltrator game is so much better than the console/PC games.
/s

CommonSenseGamer4114d ago

@Nathan:

So many discount touch screen gaming as nothing but casual. 2 years ago would you even have thought ME: Infiltrator would have been possible on a smartphone/tablet. Sure you were being sarcastic but smartphone/tablet gaming is evolving fast. Next gen mobile hardware will eclipse what the devices can do today and so open the door to even more possibilities.

Smartphone/tablet gaming may have originated from a truly casual background but that's no longer the case.

I'll bet if Sony opened the Vita to the Play Store that Vita owners would embrace it, not just for the games but for the many apps now available.

MaxXAttaxX4114d ago

Not the point. I'm not doubting the success of mobile.
It doesn't matter how better the graphics. You can have any major franchise name on mobile, like Mass Effect for example, but it won't be as good.

Get it through your heads. A touchscreen alone is extremely limiting for gaming. And this isn't about apps.

If they made a console they would just attract all the casual gamers.

RTheRebel4115d ago

so apple is releasing another apple tv?
and that is gonna be sort of like there console version?
someone explain =)

Sony CEO says although AI "has been used for creation," it's "not a substitute for human creativity"

"AI is not a substitute for human creativity. We position it as a technology that supports creativity. Creativity resides in people. We will continue to contribute to people's creativity through technology," the CEO said.

...not yet but 100% within the next 10 years!

..Then Sony will use it like the drop of a hat. They're no different to the others.

isarai1d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

They used to be 😞 sure it was always a business, and money's always the priority, but they used to have a very strong stance on supporting artists and creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" was a phrase they touted a few times back in the ps1-ps3 era, a philosophy carried over from their music branch PlayStation was created from. It's not COMPLETELY gone, but it's barely there compared to what it was back then, i just want them to return to that.

Eonjay11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

I am highly encouraged by their statement about human creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" is exactly what they are saying. But at the same time, I don't think people understand that Sony is a corporation. If they don't realize growth, they don't get to exist. When you say 'Sony', you are talking about a bunch of investors. To speak about them any other way is a illogical and incorrect. They haven't changed. They have been a group of investors since they became a public business.

isarai22h ago

Ugh, i really wish people would stop gambling people's livelihoods by turning a project/game into their political soapbox. Im all for statements and having your own opinion, but there's more people working on this than just druckman, ham fisting your political beliefs onto just seems inconsiderate for everyone elses job security when it can result in a failure due to people avoiding it for that reason.

I play games for escape, im so tired of nearly every AAA game blatantly dragging real world issues to shove in my face when I'm trying to take a break from it all. They don't even bother to be subtle about it, quite the opposite, it's blasted and force fed to you and it's just getting exhausting

Einhander197213h ago

People are taking a whole interview and cutting it down to clips that make him look bad and take what he actually was saying out of context. For example he also said things like this AI has "ethical issues we need to address"

-Foxtrot12h ago

@Einhander

Why defend him at this point?

It’s not taking things out of context, he said what he said.

Old ND would never talk about soulless AI taking over so many creative things they are well known for. The whole “ethical issues” is just a good PR spin people who push this crap fall back on to make their statements not seem as bad. So many AI lovers do this.

AI has no place is so many creative based things.

Einhander197213h ago

Well yeah, because everyone else is using it so they need to stay competitive. It's the same as paid online, they didn't want to go that route but their competition was making so much money they needed to add paid online just to keep up.

RaiderNation10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

AI will never replace humans in game development in terms of conceptualizing new games. Humans still need to come up with the ideas and what they want to implement. However much of the day to day menial coding could be AI driven to reduce production time and team size. I could also see AI being used for bug testing/optimization that could lead to better quality games at launch. I'm actually very optimistic about how AI can positively impact game development.

Good statement but hopefully this holds up

NotoriousWhiz12h ago

People that aren't software developers just don't understand the benefits of AI. People who's only exposure to A.I is the Terminator movie and other related sci fi films won't understand the benefits it provides.

It's not about replacing human labor. It's about making human labor easier.

Many years ago, I had laser eye surgery done. It was performed by a robot. The doctor took my measurements and calibrated the machine to make sure it would do what needed be done. And then the robot corrected my vision in 10 seconds.

15 years later and I still have 20/20 vision.

Eonjay11h ago

AI in and of itself is not a 'bad'. Money is bad. Money is evil, and corporations will do whatever they can to get more of it. They will find ways to implement AI to replace as may jobs as possible. This isn't even up for debate. It is the charge of the corporation to maximize returns for the investors. They have no choice. I'm a developer and I know that my job will absolutely be replaced. Therefore, I have decided to become an AI dev. AI has a lot of potential to help us solve problem on a scale most can't even imagine. The issue, as ever is that our monetary system only ever allows us to focus on greed and fiscal growth.

But I am a pragmatist. Perhaps an AI model can be built to help protect us from our most dangerous instincts and habits. And perhaps Congress can pass laws to protect us from people who would use AI to manipulate and control us (spoiler: they wont).

Unannounced Valve 6v6 Shooter MOBA Footage Leaked

ESTNN writes: "A leak for Valve's 6v6 3rd-person shooter MOBA has supposedly been released ahead of time. And if the reports are true, fans of the genre have much to be excited for."

JunonZanon1d 6h ago

Valve really cannot count to 3.

Number1TailzFan1d 5h ago

They should've had a new L4D like 10 years ago, it can be expanded upon a lot more but they just left it collecting dust.. it was a good game for its time but L4D2 doesn't have nearly enough content these days to keep players engaged, and it needs a serious graphics upgrade

mastershredder1d 4h ago

Nice bend at the knee there Gabe. Seriously? A quirky character arena shooter? This late into the me-too-shooter market? I thought you guys were so much better than that crap. Gabe must need a bigger yacht.

kitano194721h ago

clown comment, valve are famous for letting their devs work on whatever they want as they have no share holders to please. hence why we rarely get games from valve but when we do they generally are great.

icefrog, the original modder who created dota on warcraft 3 is working on this with some other members at valve.

....you know it takes people to program the AI.... right? It isnt like it is sentient. We haven't reach skynet level of situation or anywhere close to the matrix just yet.

That's next Thursday.

Einhander19723d ago (Edited 3d ago )

It takes a people to program the AI then that AI is used for who knows how many games eliminating countless jobs which only grows as AI is used for more and more game creation functions.

What you're saying is so ridiculously short sighted and truly larking any kind of understanding and foresight.

Why all the hate? Im actually excited about this! Always wanted this kind of immersion, and an AI companion with me all the time helping me out knowing the status of my skills/inventory/progress and giving me tips on the best approach or how to craft something specific is game changing for the industry.

Hate all you want about AI, but this is just the start and I can see the potential already. You wont be complaining in the next 5-10 years about this, but rather complain if a game hasn’t implemented it.

MrDead3d ago

Yes we can't wait for the work of others to be used without the need to pay them so that MS can profit even more from the people they fire.

I_am_Batman3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

There is no chance I'd ever use something like this, especially if it's not part of the core game design, but a layer on top of it. It's way too much handholding. Many games already feel like busy work, because they don't let the player figure things out on their own. Having a real-time interactive guide defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place in my opinion.

If this were to become the standard like you predict, we'll see more and more video games get away with bad design, because people will just be used to ask for help from the AI companion anyway.

Number1TailzFan3d ago

Well Nintendo don't need this with some of their games these days, with invincible characters, items, easy bosses etc.. they do the hand holding built in

helicoptergirl3d ago

Takes "hand holding" in games to a whole new level.
