What Kind of UI Would You Like on PS4 / Xbox 720?

MasonicGamer.com - There’s been a lot of news recently about the next generation of consoles. Much of this revolves around hardware – chips and specs – but there hasn’t been a lot of mention about the software. Sure, we’ve heard rumours about games, but not much about the user interfaces that will feature in the next PlayStation and Xbox. Since our consoles have so many features, being able to easily and quickly navigate around is an important aspect.

Our current generation of consoles is really the first to need such a deep interface. Up until this point, consoles had only a few options for settings and memory management. There was no storefront to visit, friends lists to peruse, internet browsers, or streaming video services, so there was no need for a complex user interface. These days, our consoles have so many features that our current UIs aren’t really cutting it anymore.

Maybe Linux-Andndoid hybrid OS for PS4
W8 kernel for 720?

As long as the OS is fast smooth and responsive I'd be happy.

Yea that's pretty much what I want, and also something that isn't going to fill the whole screen up. it's the reason why I love the XMB so much because it's a simple navigational bar with horizontal and vertical access. It's just simple and easy to understand from the get go.

I agree on the XMB and I'd prefer if they just kept it. It's fast and easy to navigate to where I want without a lot of extra crap in the way.

I really don't understand what issue people take to the XMB. I don't understand why a pile of boxes and ad boxes (Metro and about a dozen big UIs, including the PS store, trying to parrot Metro) would be preferred by anyone over a simple left-right category, up-down items interface.

I loved the original 360 interface over anything I've seen this gen. Simple but manageably occupying (lots of items displayed in the up-down direction, but not too small or big).

does it really matter what U.I they get we'll have to use whatever they put in there no matter how good or bad it is.Anyways let the online complains/petitions begin

It soooooo does matter actually. If the UI is flashy but inaccessible, then that will kill it. If it's functional as hell but laggy beyond reason, that will kill it... And anything in between.

Personally, I think Microsoft needs to just give up the stupid "flat" solid color theme for their Window's 8 styled theme that they brought over to Xbox Live. It just looks terrible. The original few Xbox UI designs were perfectly fine.

As for Sony, I don't mean to sound biased, but I really don't have much of a problem with their current UI design as it stands. However, I do feel like it could be faster to navigate. Things just seem to load up a little too slow. I know the Xbox has the same issues, but considering how much more empty the PS3 interface is, you'd think it would be quicker.

Personally, I hope Sony goes with Gaikai's UI design for the PS4. It's that glossy blue, holographic/futuristic style. That's just me though (I'm a tech-junkie).

Something simple yet purrty.

Ill take anything that doesnt look like the current XMB... Oh and xbox dashboard is sweet!

Karpetburnz4098d ago

The Xbox Dashboard looks nice and all, but the XMB is a lot easier to navigate and its way faster.

hopefully Sony creates a UI thats both good to look at and fast to navigate.
