Could XCOM: Enemy Unknown be one of the finest translations of a game from PC to console?

EDGE - XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which we reviewed here, isn’t just one of the smartest and most faithful updates of a classic game we’ve ever encountered. It’s also one of the finest translations to console of a game with such strong PC roots we’ve ever had the pleasure to play.

I would literally recommend this game to everyone.

Not a fan of strategy typed games, but after playing the demo.. wow. You literraly could recommend this to anyone. Such a good game. Will be picking this up in a few weeks.

Its funny how things work. When devs port game from console to PC, it usually turns out to be crap. When game is ported from PC to console, hey good game on both platforms!

Makes you wonder why the hell are the developers are complaining about PC versions/SDKs when they offer so much freedom.

Look at The Witcher 2. It's PC game engine but also built with the ability to be able to be ported nicely into the X box 360 while they are probably testing out the PS3 port feasibility right now.

On the other hand, Dark Souls was built with GFWL that was touted to make the transition between the 360 and PC and yet the opposite happened. It took modders to rectify some of the problems.

PC game makers take the time and effort to make their ports to consoles to be as smooth as possible but console game makers (ironically, most were former PC game makers themselves) somehow find it's the hardest thing to port their consoles games to the PC - even with the Unreal 3 engine that had strong PC roots.

Was this even ported from PC to consoles? Because the game isn't terribly demanding or anything, and at best got a change of UI in the transition.

Besides, turn-based games work on every platform and every controller. The original XCOM was on PSX, too, for example.

I tried the demo, I loved it. I' m going to buy this game ASAP!! I can't wait to play this game!

I LOVE turn-based games!

game is AWESOME, but, i must say, nearly EVERY GAME ever made was created on pc and PORTED to console...

even uncharted 3 and halo 4 were created, scripted, designed, planned, tested and 100% made on pc

then, near the end, were RETROFITTED and made to work (sometimes horribly) on the limited consoles

thats why dead island, skyrim, saits row 3, bf3, ect...ect...ect... run beautiful perfect on pc and barely break 20 frames on console even after smashing the res down to sub-hd and removing anti aliasing.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

Excellent game.
Played to death on PS3 years ago.

What other games were inspired by this game?

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

shinoff2183197d ago

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.

Ten Best Tactical Mobile Games

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
