Darwinian Difficulty in Metal Gear Solid 3

It’s your responsibility as a gamer to be as sadistic as possible. If you want to know what a character is made of, he must suffer intolerable cruelties. Don’t worry, he can take it; he’s designed to take it. But you — you twisted sadomasochist you — will have to endure as well, for you are not just the torturer but the tortured.

I really hate the attitude that games are only good if there brutally hard.

artisin4425d ago

Well, good thing the article neither discusses "games" in general nor does it say they're only "good" when hard.

Jirachi4425d ago

I know that but that doesn't change the fact this article places too much importance on difficulty.

artisin4425d ago

But difficulty IS important. It's important to game design and important to enjoyment. If you play a game that's so easy you never get around to using 50% of its mechanics, then it's bad game design. So, yes, difficulty is important.

I'm not saying every game needs to be "brutally difficult," but that a certain level of challenge is necessary for enjoyment, and in the case of MGS3, it's important to establishing the necessary skills to finish the game in a way that satisfies the narrative and the player's sense of reward. The point of this article in particular is to examine how higher levels of difficult enhance empathy with Snake's character and creative thinking, or fluid intelligence.

MGS games have a good variety in difficulties, you don't have to be a hardcore player to be able to finish them, the higher difficulties are there for the fans who want to get the most out of the experience. Far better than series that get dumbed down over time to appeal to the masses. MGS games are best experienced on the higher difficulties so as a player you will have to use most of the available gamemechanics in order to finish it. Only then these games become good for us fans. As mentioned by artisin above, how good is a game when you don't have to use half the options available? A solo sneaking mission during the Cold War should be hard period, easy gameplay doesn't fit a character like Snake. Go play Uncharted if you want to wise-crack yourself through a jungle, this is serious business. Nothing wrong with Uncharted ofcourse.

But fighting The End was special indeed, I finished the game on Hard but not European Hardcore or whatever it was called. After killing tons of Ocelot snipers in that area I started to wonder if he would ever show up, then the internet told me I accidentally must have capped his ass earlier when he was in a wheelchair although I couldn't really remember. I felt I cheated myself, didn't want to miss that Boss fight so I reloaded an older savegame and got 'the fucker' on his own terms, the way it should be. Endless sneaking on your belly and hunting for food, use of thermo goggles & the right camo and finally I found myself right behind him for an easy kill. But that took days, and I enjoyed every minute of it. With the old skool camera I might add.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection - Preparing for Snake Eater Remake

The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection launched in 2011, and is still the best way to play Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater ahead of the remake.

Can’t wait to one day break that game out of the collection vault

Currently playing Snake Eater HD on CRT 16:9, via Scart RGB. Game looks great but not as clean as MGS2, but thats due to the setting. Can't wait for the remake + the next HD collection on PS5.
