Kotaku : Should you buy a PlayStation 3?

The PlayStation 3 got off to a slow start when the console first launched in 2006. Since then, it has picked up some serious steam and has come into its own. Is now a good time to take the plunge? [UPDATED for the fall season of video games.]

Baltis4957d ago

Counter question -- Should we even go to this worthless site to find out?

Joule4957d ago (Edited 4957d ago )

This is a rhetorical question?

rroded4957d ago

n as biased as ever
check out this quote for lolz

"But What If I've Already Got A Xbox 360? Should I Buy One Now?

No. Well, unless you have money to burn, that is. One high-end system is probably enough, and more and more games are released on both the Xbox 360 and the PS3. To decide between the PS3 and the Xbox 360, it's best to decide on the console exclusives. If you feel that you must have titles like God of War III or Metal Gear Solid 4, then the PS3 is the console for you"

lol should b keep to your 360 if all you wanna play is halo fable n gears if you want variety and the best exclusive its only on the ps3.

chrisnick4957d ago

lmao at the person who posted: "no I already have a wii".

and to the guy who responded:" Should you buy a car?
No I already have Roller blades"...you are my hero.

SaberEdge4957d ago

Of course you should. There are way too many great games on the PS3 to be without it.

Lifendz4956d ago

Yeah, I read the 360 version of this article when I was contemplating getting a 360 just to get a list of older games I could get at a bargain.

This article is about as objective as Kotaku gets. Unfortunately, when you juxtapose this with the Move launch article, the GT5 slowdown articles, etc, it probably leads to most people thinking this isn't the most credible site for this sort of stuff.

If you call yourself a gamer then yea, you should own one. PS3 is the only place you'll find the GOTYs for 2008 and 2009 along with a very large variety of genre-pushing titles. Without a 360 you miss out on Halo and Gears. Without a PS3 you miss out on everything.

danielle0074957d ago

"everything."

I bought a PS3 for the exclusives, and I don't regret it. But you, sir, are definitely overstating it. The 360 has variety, too, you just have to look for it.

karl4956d ago

i dont know why u said that...

there is no variety on that console whatsoever.

and if u actually find it it comes from third party studios... and guess what.. those make ps3 games aswell

oh wait.. 360 exclusives also come from third party studios.. and end up on ps3 eventually aswell...

just accept it people.... the only excuse for buying a 360 is being a fanboy...

Kotaku - Trolling the internet and beating non-living horses since 2004.

ozps34957d ago

Microsoft's marketing department kotaku, in full swing just in time for the holiday season.

xAlmostPro4956d ago

i was actually going to give 'props' to kotaku(for the fist time ever)until i got the part which states..

"PS3s support Bluetooth and USB headsets, but the lack of a packed-in headset with new systems has diminished the likelihood that people with whom you play an online game even have a headset plugged in."

Are people still making this comment? ok yeah there wasnt many mics for awhile, but now almost every game i join has people with mics like 95% of the time.. and games like COD, during the sort of hardcore player gametypes such as search & destroy/headquarters/dominatio n etc have pretty much a full lobby of mics most games. its quite annoying that people still use and say this.. even worse so-called 'respectable' websites lol

its like because the ps3 has made such good progress and proving itself over and over against all the BS claims and stuff, they just resort to things like "well ps3 has no headsets" "psn is laggy" "ps3 multiplats are terrible" lol

dont get me wrong i play pc/ps3/360.. but the ps3 for some reason does get alot of 'hate' when i see it as the best CONSOLE on the market :/

MsmackyM4956d ago

The last thing I want to do is turn on my PS3, and hear some fat sweaty kid talk about how his online gaming prowess, equates to his sexual conquests.

TK4214956d ago

The article should be about whether you should bother to buy a 360.

Scotland-The-Brave4956d ago

There is an article from kotaku about that . http://n4g.com/news/615676/...
Its on the main page.

tacosRcool4956d ago

Everybody who owns a HDTV should.

vhero4956d ago

@Baltis - I agree I am not gonna bother they are the biggest 360 fanboy site around..

''What Are The Best Games On The PS3? ANSWER UPDATED''

Even with an updated answer, the author ignore other best Games for PS3, let me add some:

Demon's Souls
ModNation Racers
Heavy Rain
R&C Games
Infamous
Sport Champions
And a lot more biggest games.

Also the author should add Gran Turismo 5 also, this game define the PlayStation Franchise.

callahan094957d ago

He didn't mention Demon's Souls? For shame! The others are all great games as well (except ModNation Racers... it was good, but not great. Not enough freedom to allow users to give their levels a truly unique visual style. Every level, despite having unique features, course lines, etc., still LOOKED too similar to the others in terms of visual presentation. And the load times were pretty long. I liked the game, but didn't love it).

being_in_itself4957d ago

He did mention Demons Souls (as mentioned below by jerethdagryphon). I'd also add, and I'll get some shit for a title, the following:

Exclusives:
-Heavenly Sword - sick game, wish trophy support would come and a sequel.
-MLB The Shows - how do you omit the BEST baseball franchise out there, hell, the only baseball franchise out there imo.
-Ninja Gaiden Sigmas
-Resistances - how in the hell did they omit these????
-HD Remakes such as GOW series and next year SOTC
-Lair W/ THE CONTROLLER DL - this will be where I get shat upon. I personally couldn't play Lair at first. I bought it early b/c Factor 5's Rogue Squadron games on Gamecube were sick. I just never touched it after a few tries but then the DL came. After that, loved the game.

Non-Exclusives (they, after all, listed some):

-If they list Oblivion for Xbox, which they did, list it for PS3 as its a far better version and includes DLC (I unfortunately don't have it, I did EVERYTHING and had all DLCs for the Xbox version but lately have seriously contemplated buying the PS3 version as well b/c it may just be my fave game this generation).
-Soon to be ME2

theEx1Le4956d ago

I do believe that there is a huge chunk of dlc missing on the ps3 version, perhaps thats why they listed it for xbox

Beahmscream4956d ago

Sport Champions really? How about MAG!

jerethdagryphon4957d ago

they list a few heavy hitters not a ocmplete collection demons souls is mentioned

once gt5 is released and reviewed if 'worthy' it will be added

surprising there answer is most likly

unless you have a 360

Blaster_Master4957d ago

If you want a console that does more than shooters, get a ps3.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies7h ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken2h ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing6918h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker17h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo17h ago(Edited 17h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing6917h ago(Edited 17h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt5h ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken2h ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos23h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto23h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger8822h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).

ChasterMies12h ago

Trevor in GTA 6 is a sadist and psychopath who dabbles in cannibalism. Should be top of the list. These game “news” sites should hire people that know games.
