Would I be right in thinking that this kind of thing is bad for Game Console manufacturers?
The machines are being sold at a loss (or are those days gone?) with the view that the revenue will return in the form of game sales, but obviously with a purchase like this that's not going to happen.

To be completely honest, it's very hard for me to imagine going back to this style of combat after playing Demon's Souls.
ToV does kinda look like it has combat that's more interesting than other standard JRPG stuff, but man...after seeing it done so well in DS...

An open platform in what sense? You can't put anything in the PSN/PS3 without a devkit and Sony's tick of approval.
iPhone apps need Apple's tick of approval also but there's been a hundred thousand of those given outalready - 20,000 are probably all fart apps.
Sony/MS/Nintendo all require huge feats of planning and discussion before they'll let some one even begin development for official release.
I very seriously doubt it will ever be totally "OPEN".
Sony has run closed platforms for its entire life in this business, and no console platform - home, handheld, or otherwise, has ever been fully open. It was proven not to work in the 80s.
The iPhone has taken the opposite approach, but the iPhone's business model is not to sell games as its #1 lifeline - it's a phone, not sold at a loss (to my knowledge), bundled with call plans, etc...
