Sony had the chance to do something great here but I think they have missed their opportunity.
They should have waited till later in the year & got PS3 games working via downloading not streamed. They should have had Vita games on there aswell.
They could of kept the different tiers They have now but had an Ultimate Pass called something like PlayStation All In & also included New Released first party exclusives.
They could of charged double the price of Ga...

Gampass will likely make all the difference. I know some ppl on here won't like to hear it & another lot will point out they prefer to buy their games but from what I've seen myself Gamepass is going to be a bigger factor every year.
I've already had friends sell their PS5 for either an Xbox Series or a PC just for Gamepass. Yes there's some amazing first party games on PS5 right now & coming soon but there's so many games coming onto Gamepass every month...

So Combinator, what's your guess on the figures..
Like Neon said, this is the best guesstimate we have got, try and stay calm....

"This actual global tracking firm thinks xbox is only at 10 million.
https://www.ampereanalysis....
Yes for the end of 2021! 10.5 million The article goes on to say....

Microsoft ended 2021 with its Xbox Series family of devices reaching cumulative sell-through of 10.5 million units. This is on a par with the previous generation Xbox One cycle. In a similar way to Sony with the PS5, Mi...

I recently read about Microsoft being in talks with Sega over the last 5 months. I don't know if it was an acquisition or some type of deal. Sega would make a Sega version of the Xbox Series X for some markets & Sega would use Xbox Series X for cheaper arcade hardware going forward. There was a ton of information but I can't find the article so I'm not sure if it was true or just speculation. A great read though. It was on a money business shares site...

Insane amount of money. I can definitely see Microsoft buying another big studio further down the line, now that they are all in on gaming at last..

I'm just going by the Forbes article & replying to the figure of 10M given by cbuc above...
Even if Spencer isn’t supplying numbers, Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad says that based on past Xbox One and Xbox 360 year one numbers (~12 million and 10.4 million respectively), that means Spencer is saying that Xbox Series X and S have shipped at least 12 million units. Though how many above that is unclear.
Xbox Series could be on 13 million as far as we know but as us...

Where are you getting Xbox Series on 10M & PlayStation on 18M?
Phil Spencer recently said that sales of the Xbox Series has beaten the Xbox One plus its also beaten their previous best selling console the Xbox 360. Its estimated that Xbox Series Consoles are already over 12M. PlayStation is between 15 & 17M.

I thought Sony gets a 30% cut of each game sold on PlayStation. Sony has probably already talked with Microsoft & offered Call of Duty on PlayStation for no fee to pay..

Isn't this just similar to how Sony beat Sega years ago. The bigger company came along with much more money & bought up studios & bought up exclusive deals. Plus Sony could sell the original PS1 at a bigger loss than Sega ever could with the Saturn, similar to how Sony will never really be able to compete with Microsofts Gamepass..

Wow.
I'd like to think that Gamepass is doing a lot better than Microsoft were expecting & is not losing a ton of money each month like some seem to think.
There's no way Microsoft would spend this kind of cash if they didn't have a well thought out plan.
I imagine that certain titles will stay multi platform for awhile but imagine the next console generation where Call of Duty etc is on the Next Box on release.
Wow

Gamepass is sustainable at the moment, Microsoft isn't losing Millions per month.
It's costing a lot with so many Games coming to the service every month but if there's 30 Million customers using it that's roughly 300 million per month they are getting. Unlike Netflix, a gaming subscription also makes money from add ons they can sell you in the game plus you can still actually buy the game digitally unlike you can with films on Netflix.
If Microsoft was lo...

I'd say they both had a great year its just Xbox Gamepass muddies the water a bit as its such an amazing deal & you get to play their biggest games day one. To many games to play then you have Forza 5 & a new Halo the month after its insane....

“It’s not the only thing that’s growing in Xbox,” he explained. “It’s not the only focus of the organisation, and it, as a standalone thing, is very sustainable as it sits today. It’s sustainable.

“I know there are a lot of people that like to write [that] we’re burning cash right now for some future pot of gold at the end. No. Game Pass is very, very sustainable right now as it sits and it continues to grow.”
