Killzone 3 Retro Map pack comparison

When we asked the community what their favorite multiplayer maps from Killzone 2 were, Blood Gracht and Salamun Market were amongst the favorites. Of course, we didn’t want to simply port the maps – instead we updated them, portraying them as they might look after the events of Killzone 3.

In the video, you can see how the new versions of Blood Gracht and Salamun Market compare to the old ones. Arjen touches on the design challenges and gameplay changes for the reinterpretations of the maps, such as the addition of foliage to Blood Gracht and the inclusion of Exoskeletons with Salamun Market.

The Retro Pack will hit the PlayStation Store on Killzone 3’s launch day, but you can get it for free if you pre-order Killzone 3 at participating retailers today!

I would have been happy with just a port. Hats off to Guerilla for giving these a once-over in the art department.

Although I wish they would have picked Corinth Crossing over Blood Gracht.

blitz06235196d ago

I thought Radec was the most popular map. It was my favorite. I really hated Blood Gracht since it was too cramped up.

Pixel_Enemy5196d ago

Radec was over played. I would have preferred Corinth Crossing for sure

-Alpha5196d ago

I don't know why Radec is so played. It's a good map but it's so overplayed. Corinth Crossing is nice, as is Pyrrhus Rise. Actually, I liked all the maps, though Blood Gracht was near the bottom of the list.

DaCajun5196d ago

Radec was overplayed because it was small and good for fast kills, high KDRs, and easy rank-ups since the run and gunners loved to run straight for the open courtyard making them easy targets for everyone else.

Hopefully they eventually add all of them to KZ3 and free would be nice to show thanks for our support.

HappyGaming5195d ago

I hate Blood Gracht because it was dark...

it is a weird thing I have I hate dark dirty places which is why I loved Radec and why I love Uncahrted games and Battlefield 1943 they are nice and bright :P

Mr_Shuttlezworth5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

Personally my favorite was Pyrrhus Rise... The retro maps look great, most developers would have taken the lazy route and simply ported over the old maps *cough*infinity.ward*cough*

vickers5005195d ago

The new Salamun market looks like sh*t, I preferred the old look better.

I do like the new look of Blood Gracht though.

HappyGaming5195d ago

No I hated the green tint the new filters look much nicer.

But like I said above this is a unique gaming disorder I seem to have with dark multiplayer maps in all games.

Wh15ky5195d ago

Pretty dissapointed by Blood Gracht too. Either Corinth Crossing or Tharsis Depot would have been better. Always liked Salamun Market though.

Kleptic5195d ago

I actually loved BG...It was too crazy with 32 players, I agree (but was impressive that the game still ran perfectly fine)...but with 24 players and team killing on (which would address idiot assault players) through full 25 minute rounds it was perfect for me...by far the most intense multiplayer gaming i've seen this generation...

plb5196d ago

This pack comes free with a preorder from Gamestop btw.

RankFTW5196d ago

I am not getting my copy from any participating retailer so does anyone know what price this will be on release?

I have £46 on my PSN account anyway so should be able to afford it.

Nitrowolf25196d ago

i don't think this will be available one PSN

duplissi5196d ago

looks like your gonna be ebaying it.

Mr Tretton5196d ago

I'm sure Sony will put these on PSN at some point so that more people will be playing in them.

Nitrowolf25195d ago

woops i read your comment wrong i was thinking the whole game

I wish they didn't add the exos to Saluman Market, that map was perfect the way it was. If Exos can still regenerate health then people will continue to use them to camp like they did in the beta.

The new skinning looks nice but I liked the nighttime setting of Saluman Market. Love the jungle look of Blood Gracht though.

I also hope they enable all modes in all maps, I don't like the idea of just playing Guerilla Warfare just to play the jungle map.

As for Blood Gracht, it's a decent map, but I was hoping for Southern Hills, that map was very clever. I also loved the first map pack. Hopefully they bring over a good mix of old and new

SmokeyMcBear5196d ago

do all maps have guerilla warfare? I think that would be the staple. Sure warzone in every map would be awesome as well, I just think the general public (ie cod players) would need that GW mode. Too bad they took out ability to host your own server and make custom games though. Why cant a game have ever conceivable game mode with matchmaking and custom games... i just dont get it.

-Alpha5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

6/10 Have Guerilla Warfare
3/10 have Operations
8/10 have Warzone

Guerilla Warfare is where most COD players I see seem to go, or just players that want a quick fix. Problem is that it's a little on the short side and there are some spawn problems, but they are fixing that. Warzone is still the staple, Operations is the cool alternative, and Guerilla Warfare is the quick fix IMO.

It sucks that they took out custom games for playlists but I can understand why. They will have private matches with friends though. IMO clan matches are disappointing. We should be able to schedule matches and rules. If there is boosting they need to have the ability to report and they ought to monitor it that way.

It's disappointing. But I think they will unlock some modes for maps like DICE did or maybe they will just add more maps.

I don't see why they can't have GW. Hope they add more Operation modes, those are fun.

SmokeyMcBear5196d ago

Well I know some maps will need to be blocked off for GW.... as well as operations... and frozen dam showed why thats the case. I will have to play the new maps to see if they are even possible to have the different game modes. It would seem corridor type maps would easily have the other modes, but open maps with mupltiple way to get around might be more difficult to implement the new modes. I guess you could have GW on any map regardless, but it might be super boring on a huge map where warzone tends to herd the players to different areas. Operations is the funnest mode thatI have played in multiplayer for a long time. I like that its pretty frustrating to finish off all 3 objectives if two teams are pretty equal in skill. Meh, hopefully everything will pan out within a month of release.

-Alpha5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

Operations is indeed very fun, hopefully it comes in more future maps/map packs.

The trouble with Warzone IMO is that it's make or break depending on the TSA layout. By giving teams the advantage simply by map layout it ruins the fun of the game. In the public beta the map favors the ISA.

In the private beta the two other maps could easily be broken for the other team:

In Corinth highway it was the exoskeletons base camping (with Tactitian Radar) There was no escape from that if the other team knew what to do.

In the turbine map, TSAs are directly overhead your base, and it's a very small map anyway.

They say they reworked those TSAs but I'm not sure how the rest work.

I don't mind TSAs much in Frozen Dam. It's a swell concept but if the layout isn't fair then it's disadvantageous by design. And also, some modes like Assassination are too easily won because Tactitians have to TSAs but by the time they do that the Assassination round is already over. They should have just fixed the spawn nades. There were tons of ideas and they just decided to switch it out for a totally different style that brought with it its own problems.

plb5196d ago

Anyone know if there are additional modes in the final game or just what is present in the demo?

-Alpha5196d ago

Nope, that's it, which is too bad. I've made numerous suggestions on the forums and I gave many ideas but they aren't adding any at the moment.

They could easily do Warzone 2.0 with new/altered modes, for example, Assassination with 2 targets instead of just 1

Sadly Operations is only available on 3 maps, including Frozen Dam. Hopefully they add more

El-Fenemeno12135196d ago

That saddens me, I love operations =/. I think I even encountered you there :'(.

Nitrowolf25196d ago

i want Operation on every map. Best game mode IMO.
I'm hoping it's different to, rather then ISA always attacking there should be one with ISA defending.

-Alpha5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

Ha, maybe, What was your PSN ID?

@Nitro

Yeah. IMO they should have done new modes for Warzone. A Warzone 2.0 with new variations would have been great, especially something as simple as if you plant just 1 bomb in S&D it begins to explode (think Demolitions from COD)

Halo has that sort of freedom, Killzone doesn't, and IMO it's something they should do.

Naughty Dog is another good example, they had the Lab playlist.

awesomeperson5196d ago

I guess operations is harder to make as they have to code the cutscenes and work out more thoroughly and for balance where all the positions of the objectives are.

Maybe some maps wouldn't be suitable for operations but I agree, I definitely want to see more of that mode, its a nice change from the KZ2 MP.

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic164d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Storm23164d ago

Yeah...really odd list. I get that it is personal preference and I love most of the games listed, but my list would definitely be different. I agree though, it would be incredibly difficult to come up with just 30.

lockedongamer1164d ago (Edited 164d ago )

I only picked first-party titles. Otherwise, I agree!

EDIT: Except for Days Gone, I don't get the love for it but you do you!

Chocoburger155d ago

I didn't like Days Gone either, it doesn't deserve to be on any best of list.

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor730d ago

SullysCigar730d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg730d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149730d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138730d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim730d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC730d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138730d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle730d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76730d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware730730d ago (Edited 730d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger730d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca730d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy730d ago (Edited 730d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain730d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright730d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.

Killzone 3 is playable with mouse & keyboard on PC via RPCS3 & KAMI

Still looks secure 2 gens later... one of my favorite ps3 moments. With 3D and move the game is on another level

MadLad1481d ago

PC almost always ends up the best place to play games, even if it takes a while.

What would you rather play decades down the line? A game at a fixed resolution and frame, considering you have a working disc, and the hardware?
Or run it on an emulator that can update the experience all around, and let you use whatever control input you prefer?

If you insist on the former, it's really only for the sake of nostalgia.

Applejack1481d ago

I disagree. The main draw for consoles has always be the simplicity of just putting the disc in / downloading it and playing without worrying about anything else. The average person just wouldn’t want to deal with emulation even though it’s very important for preservation.

Terry_B1481d ago

Even emulators are super simple to use.

jukins1481d ago

Youre getting flak because people on here thibk of themselves as pc wizards. But honestly most poeple try and go get emulators and romz they end up with malware.. yes theyre "easy" if you know the basics but alot of people dont. That said the fact that its taken nearly 20 years to get a sustantially better experience for ps3 games than on its native system shows the complexity of getting bc to work. Sony, if they have any intention, should just invest in a vastly better psnow experience.

1481d ago
Vegamyster1481d ago

jukins

Most people who emulate don't get malware, you'd have to be going to some weird sites for that to happen, heck years ago people were getting sketchier ad's resulting in malware warning on this site if you didn't have a ad-blocker lol.

SinkingSage1481d ago

Can't get malware if you legally dump your own games, which you should.

Rachel_Alucard1481d ago (Edited 1481d ago )

That's fine if that's the main draw, but it doesn't make it a better experience, just a preference. Having the freedom to do the things you can do on PC is what the appeal of PC is. Buying a game on PC means you never have to worry about the console makers just deciding the next hardware shouldn't support the generation anymore, which means everything you bought is stuck on that hardware instead of moving up with everything else. Nintendo uses this tactic to keep reselling the same games over and over at inflated prices. Sony cut all previous gens off the PS4 and sold it back to people in a poor attempt with PSnow. While the PS5 supports PS4 games, that may not be the case in the next gen after this. No to mention shutting off all the previous stores and updates completely. Even MS stopped making new BC titles at some point, so now there's a big list with 17 pages of titles that are not playable on Xbone and are just trapped on older gen. That's not a problem on PC, the reverse happens where you only have to worry if your hardware can play the newest releases at ultra with no issue.

Shhh don't say that aloud! You're going to trigger a lot of console infidels here.

Shane Kim1481d ago

I rather play it when it's available then wait 10 years.

MadLad1480d ago

Did you purposely miss the entire point of my post?

Inverno1481d ago

Well that's the beauty of still owning a retro console tho. Those who usually complain about emulation are just being blindly loyal to a company. Emulation is great for many reason, but if I still owned the console then I disagree nothing beats plugging it back in and going down a nostalgia trip
