Cloud Causes Strife Among Fans

Cloud Strife, one of the most popular characters to ever grace video games, has stormed his way onto the Nintendo Wii U in a rather shocking revelation. Some are baffled, others are upset, and the rest of the fans are ecstatic to have him included as part of the Super Smash Bros. downloadable content.

Not sure how I feel about Cloud in Smash.

Abash3083d ago

I honestly would have been more excited seeing Isaac announced for Smash Bros. 4. Cloud Strife is still cool, but Isaac is long overdue to be part of the Smash Bros. roster

Lord_Sloth3082d ago

I'll enjoy having him in the game but he's certainly an odd choice since the character has only really appeared on Playstation systems. Warrior of Light would have felt like a better FF addition in Smash.

miyamoto3081d ago (Edited 3081d ago )

Cloud causes strife among fans?
Really?
How?
When?
Why?

Because of these games:

What?

pompombrum3082d ago

Don't see how it's a bad thing, a character as big as Cloud is bound to bring new people to the community, it was his trailer reveal which finally convinced me to get a Wii U at least.

nintendo18893082d ago

Agreed, and happy to hear that that announcement has convinced you to get a Wii U :D

3-4-53082d ago

If Cloud being in smash bothers you, you have some issues to deal with.

It's literally not a big deal, and is only good for gaming in general.

Some people only want themselves or their group to experience good things.

This is great news for getting Square-Enix games on the NX, which is good for all gamers.

Cloud has only ever been in so many PS games, and Smash is an iconic fighting game.

Playstation fans should be proud he get put in the game. It's an honor.

WildArmed3082d ago

AHHH, I see the issue now.

I never understood why Cloud being on Smash would be an issue. Turns out it was over it being on Nintendo console instead of Sony?

Yikes!

3-4-53082d ago

Yea it can only help make Cloud more popular, which in turn will help boost the sales of FF7 remake which is exclusively only on PS4.

Literally can only be a good thing, I wish more people understood this.

smashman983082d ago

Not exclusive just first

3082d ago
vegetassj513082d ago

I think the reason people are bothered by it is cuz Cloud is probably taking up a roster spot from a Nintendo character that's more deserving

MeteorPanda3082d ago

As it was fortold a decade ago by preteens on what was once the front page of the internet; Newgrounds Forums, Cloud and Goku were favourites while sonic was a safe bet and Snake was a wildcard. I can't believe it finally happened XD

FallenAngel19843083d ago (Edited 3083d ago )

I don't see the issue. We've had Final Fantasy characters appear in Mario Hoops 3-on-3 and Mario Sports Mix, two games that were developed by Square Enix. Even the Mario franchise and Dragon Quest franchise crossed over in Itadaki Street DS and Fortune Street. Nintendo and Square Enix are no strangers to having crossovers with one another.

Cloud's inclusion in SSB4 is more referencing the fact that the Final Fantasy franchise got its start on Nintendo consoles than the actual character himself. Square Enix wouldn't have generic job classes or any of the lead roles from FFI-FFVI be the rep because they aren't as well known as Cloud is. Cloud is the most iconic rep to choose for Square Enix's biggest franchise, so its a natural fit in that aspect. Even moreso than Solid Snake from the Metal Gear franchise.

nintendo18893083d ago

I agree, their choosing Cloud is in a way, homage to the old days when Square Enix and Nintendo were partners in the gaming industry.

Eamon3082d ago

Uhh, it'd be a homage if they chose a character from FF1-FF6. FF7 was on PS1 lol.

Not that I'm complaining. I'll be downloading Cloud DLC on Day 1.

FallenAngel19843082d ago (Edited 3082d ago )

Not only Square Enix but Konami, SEGA, Capcom, and Bandai Namco also have had a long history with Nintendo. That is why their respective characters were allowed to appear in Super Smash Bros to rep their publishers.

Aloy-Boyfriend3083d ago (Edited 3083d ago )

Smash community can be a pain in the ass most of the times. I don't see what is wrong with this. Nah just the typical people mad because his wished character wasn't chosen.

nintendo18893083d ago

And the Direct for Smash Bros is pretty soon, next month and we'll be hearing the results of the Smash poll.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3082d ago

It just that majority of the smash community or Nintendo fans thought it was Wolf when the trailer was first shown.

If you go on YouTube and watch people reaction 95% didn't get FFVII Bombing Mission song.

-Foxtrot3083d ago

At the end of the day despite how awesome it is it would have made more sense for Sora to be included.

Although my problem is despite how much better and popular Smash Bros is they couldn't let Cloud be in Playstation All Stars...the characters being the biggest let down of the game. If it had the fan favourites it might have stood a chance

Obviously the whole "Super" thing was the games other problem but the characters were the main one for me when you are trying to establish a new franchise

nintendo18893083d ago

Yeah, that would have made sense, but I see it as SE and Nintendo rekindling some kind of relationship.

Kalebninja3082d ago (Edited 3082d ago )

There's still a possibility sora could get in because of the ballot. As far as cloud it seems all the third party characters they've added so far are some of biggest in gaming and of their genre. Smash seems to be evolving from a celebration of Nintendo characters to a celebration of video games as a whole.

nintendo18893082d ago

Of course, we'll know for sure when we hear the direct, which should be soon, I think...? I can't wait to see what results the poll had.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3082d ago

Yes that is if Disney allows Sora.

Since they are the one to decide.

Snookies123082d ago (Edited 3082d ago )

Pretty sure Tetsuya Nomura is the one who holds claim over Sora. Since he created the character after all. Not too sure what the contract between Square Enix and Disney is though for that whole series.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3082d ago

@Snookies12
He did created him but Disney was the one that was pressuring him while created Sora.

Disney was heavily involved with Sora creation.

smashman983082d ago

Yep Disney 100 percent owns sora and Kingdom Hearts maybe not some of the characters in KH "FF CHaracters, TWEWY characters" but definitely sora

JOKERACN73083d ago

The more options, the better ! simple as that

nintendo18893083d ago

Exactly, that's how I like it

I feel bad for Smash fans. Those guys have been trying to maintain the scene active for 20+ years and get nothing but hate from Nintendo.

RoseSapphire352d ago

Sakurai explains how he and Nintendo still don't understand how the internet works.

FTFY

Snookies12352d ago

Exactly, online play would be wonderful on Smash if Nintendo gave a crap about their online services. To be fair though, Nintendo's online offerings would be great if it were 15-20 years ago lol.

jambola352d ago

I've always said that Nintendo is either innovative and ahead of the curve
or 20 years behind, no in between

CrimsonWing69352d ago

I’m sorry, but if a game is MP then there’s no f*cking argument that can justify no online MP. What he says about competition being different from just playing with friends shows me how out of touch these people are.

It’s not until a new generation that understands things steps in to clean-house that we’ll see some evolution here.

Vanfernal352d ago

His argument is nonsensical. "You'd be limited to just playing people from your region". As opposed to being limited to playing people FROM YOUR COUCH!

CrimsonWing69352d ago

What I don’t get is how do you not have competition and experience the same issue if you have a friend that’s way better than you?

GoodGuy09352d ago

It's a big fighting game so online multiplayer is a must. Competitive smash is the only thing I see fun in these games anymore asides from the big character reveals, singleplayer is laughable and you ain't gunna have people over for couch gaming much.

If Nintendo makes a new smash, it needs a huge evolution for singleplayer/couch play to be enjoyable for me any more. But we all know they'll just do a deluxe edition for their next console lol. They really need to up their servers as well.

NotoriousWhiz352d ago (Edited 352d ago )

I can't imagine Nintendo producing a better smash game than ultimate. Roll it forward with a deluxe edition maybe with an extra character or two and call it a day.

Some other developers can try pushing platform fighters to the next level, because I don't think Nintendo is up to the task.

DarthZoolu351d ago

They already created a better smash brothers game than ultimate when they created melee

masterfox352d ago

he sounds more like is trying to justify Nintendo ineptitude to create a proper network infrastructure in order to Smash Brothers work properly online.

Xenoblade Chronicles X needs a remake when Switch 2 comes out! The game was fantastic, and it looked great! Better than most Switch games.

It isn't going to happen though. Monolith soft said "it is way too big", and would be too costly. I would absolutely buy that again, especially a remake or even a remaster.

Xenoblade Chronicles X should have sold better.

Sgt_Slaughter514d ago

One of the games I'm grateful that I found in-stock at GameStop before they quickly cleared nearly all pre-PS4/One/Switch games from their stores.

Nyxus513d ago

Perhaps if the series sold a little more on Switch, it would be worth it to do a port. If only some of those Pokemon numbers went to Xenoblade...

Sirk7x513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

I don't see how it would be too costly for them, when even a 1:1 Switch port would sell far better than the Wii U version ever did. It'd sell a million copies easy. Also, it is kinda crazy how good that game still looks.

GotGame818511d ago

X looks better than the Switch Xenoblade games.

Profchaos513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

Thank you homebrew community for breathing life into the system Nintendo spent years trying to forget.

One of my favourite systems for homebrew along with the Xbox, vita and ps2

Sirk7x513d ago

Huge library of great games with a modded Wii U. Virtual console, including injections, emulation, Wii U, Wii and Gamecube games with Nintendont on vWii.

FinalFantasyFanatic512d ago

Please port Xenoblade Chronicles X, I'm shocked it hasn't happened yet since everything else pretty much got ported to the Switch.

Playing Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS in 2021

Alex DS. from Link Cable Gaming writes: "The release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch made playing Smash 4, on either system a thing of the past. But for today’s piece, I wanted to revisit the 3DS version of the previous generation of Smash Bros., to see how it holds up and see if time has changed my opinion on the first portable Smash Bros. game."
