How To Scan and Ping in Star Citizen

A fleet of ships organized to celebrate Invictus Launch Week in Star Citizen.

Space travel has always fascinated me, and I love Star Citizen’s spaceship systems. I’ve never felt like a true space pilot as I have in this title. Space is massive and full of interesting locations and events, but going unprepared into the dark void is ill-advised.

This is where scanning comes in. This is one feature that respectable pilot should know and should feel second nature as you explore space. Think of scanning like doing your homework and making sure you are prepared. With that said, let’s find out how to scan in Star Citizen!

How To Use the Scanner in Star Citizen

Scanning plays an important role for any space pilot. This tool can only be initiated while piloting your spaceship, so make your way to the cockpit before attempting this. We also recommend leaving the hangar to find scannable items and ensuring you are full on fuel. Here is how to scan in Star Citizen.

  • Be the pilot in your spaceship.
  • Press the V key.
  • Hold down the left mouse button and point toward objects you wish to scan.

You can scan numerous objects, including moons, ship systems, planets, ores, mineable asteroids, and more. Scanning helps you identify good resources and places to salvage. One thing to note is that you cannot scan while using quantum travel.

How To Ping in Star Citizen

Pinging is another aspect of Star Citizen. This lets you mark objects and keep them on your radar until you are close enough to scan them or study them. You can adjust your settings if you are having trouble seeing long-distance objects. Here is how to ping in Star Citizen.

  • Be the pilot in your spaceship.
  • Aim where you wish to ping.
  • Press the Tab key.
