Traveling in Final Fantasy XIV can sometimes be a pain because of how massive the distance there is to cover. Having a mount to ride would, naturally, make things faster. However, a lot of players don’t know what they have to do to unlock mounts.
Fortunately, we’re here to go through the steps you need to complete to unlock the ability to ride mounts and dash through the lands to get to your destination in no time at all.
How to Get a Mount in FFXIV
Unfortunately, you can’t get your hands on a mount as soon as you create a character in Final Fantasy 14. Instead, you first have to progress in the main story until you reach a specific point. To make things easier, we’ve categorized everything in three steps:
- Join a Grand Company
- Complete Missions

How To Join a Grand Company in FFXIV
The first thing you have to do is progress in the main story until you reach the point where you’re asked to join one of three grand companies. The mission’s name will be A Hero in the Making.
One thing to keep in mind is that it doesn’t matter which Grand Company you join. So, if you’ve already joined one, then don’t worry as you can still unlock a mount. However, you will have to complete the initiation of the quest series of the company you join called The Company You Keep.
Completing this quest officially adds you to the ranks of your company. You could start completing company-related quests to earn company seals. Be sure to save up your company seals since you’ll be needing them in just a bit.
What To Do To Get a Chocobo in FFXIV
Eventually, your company’s resident commander will give you a quest called “My Little Chocobo.” To complete it, you have to give a specific item to another NPC in the company. However, the item, which is called Chocobo Insurance actually costs 200 whole company seals to purchase.
If you’re just starting out, then this number of company seals will take you quite some time to collect. However, if you’re a bit further into the game, then 200 company seals might feel like a cakewalk to you.

To get more company seals, we recommend you do one or more of the following:
- Complete FATEs out in the open world (most recommended method)
- Fill out entries in the Grand Company Hunting Log
- Undertake supply and provisioning missions
Where To Get a Chocobo Mount in FFXIV
When you have enough company seals, head up to your company quartermaster at the headquarters, and you’ll find the Chocobo Insurance underneath the material tab. Purchase it and then go over to the Chocobokeep and deliver the item to finally complete the quest.
As a reward for completing the quest, you’ll be given the Chocobo Whistle, which you can use to summon your Chocobo mount. At this point, you’ll only be able to summon the mount to ride it. However, as you progress, you’ll be able to do more things with your mount, like fighting alongside it.
