In Coral Island, you’re tasked with cleaning up Starlet Town and its reputation following a devastating oil spill. From early on in the game, this involves picking up trash. Heaps can be found scattered about the fields of your farm, as well as in the ocean and areas throughout town. You’ll want to start cleaning up as soon as you can to fully utilize your fields and help increase the town’s rating. When you’re first starting out in Coral Island, you’ll receive a set of tools and other equipment to help you accomplish just about anything. This includes picking up trash. That said, there are a few different ways you can go about cleaning up the island’s environment. Here’s a look at your options:

  • Clear trash heaps with your scythe
  • Reel in trash with your fishing pole
  • Rummage through trashcans

Clearing Trash Piles

You can clean up trash from the start of your Coral Island playthrough. To do this, equip your scythe and hack away at any garbage piles you find by using the action input. You’ll need to clear space in your fields as one of your first quests in the game, so you should start here. This will give you more tiles to work with as you set up your farm and help the town’s rating.

Reeling in Trash

After a couple of days on the island, Sunny and Eleanor will give you a fishing pole. Of course, you’ll want to aim to reel in various species of fish to start donating critters to the museum and turn a profit with any duplicates you manage to find. However, you’ll also pull up trash from the sea every once in a while. Fortunately, this will help to keep the waters clean.

Rummaging in Trashcans

While dumpster-diving may seem a bit ill-mannered, this practice is actually encouraged in Coral Island. When you approach trashcans around the island, you’ll see the rummage prompt pop up. By rummaging through the trash, you can sometimes find useful items and even consumables. Needless to say, you’ll also find trash.

It may seem counterintuitive to some, but trash is a useful crafting material in Coral Island. This resource can be used to build a variety of different machines and furniture items, including the following:

  • Makeshift Scarecrow
  • Makeshift Chest
  • Recycling Machine
  • Compost Bin
  • Makeshift Path

Trash can also be fed into the Compost Bin to make compost, or the Recycling Machine to make scrap.
