Exclusive? Not Exclusive? - What Do the Console Manufacturers Achieve By Not Being Up Front with Us?

In a not so surprise move the gaming public finds out that all of the Rise of the Tomb Raider frenzy might all be lies... in less than a 24 hr span since the announcement. Why can't gamers just be told the truth from the start?

Remove the !'s, exclamation points are only allowed if they are apart of the name of a game, remove Phil Spencer tag, that is for news/interviews about that person.

What they hope to achieve seems obvious. Sales of their console caused by the belief that some game or games can only be played on it.

iamnsuperman3560d ago

Essentially but I do think it is a fine line. As soon as the tomb raider thing was announced people were questioning if it was timed or not. That is because people don't trust companies in the gaming industry anymore. They have played the card too often for it to not be entirely true 6 months later on. Trust is very important.

MysticStrummer3560d ago

Yeah I hear ya. Even when Greenburg denied it was timed I still thought it probably was. Hopefully it's dying out as a dishonest marketing tactic but I'm sure we'll still see commercials that only have one console's logo. I was looking at Evolve videos yesterday and kept seeing only XB1.

Mr Pumblechook3560d ago

When Microsoft said Tomb Raider would only be exclusive in "Holiday 2015" I knew it would be timed.

Game trailers host Geoff Keighley then tweeted that it would be timed but Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg then tried to refute this!
https://twitter.com/aarongr...

Now because of the furore Phil Spencer has finally admitted it is timed. But Why did Aaron Greenberg have to lie? Instead he tried to get as much milage out of deceiving the public. Why couldn't he just shut up and say nothing?

amiga-man3560d ago (Edited 3560d ago )

People don't trust MS, last gen they could make claims of exclusivity making no mention of it being timed exclusivity.

not this gen gamers have grown wise to MS and the same tactics will not wash.Tomb Raider announcement was a very poor attempt by MS to manipulate gamers luckily most saw straight through it

choujij3560d ago (Edited 3560d ago )

What they hope to achieve and what they actually achieve are not the same thing. In cases like these, it results in money losses and hurts the franchise.

DigitalRaptor3560d ago

"But Why did Aaron Greenberg have to lie? Instead he tried to get as much milage out of deceiving the public. Why couldn't he just shut up and say nothing?"

Cause he's Aaron Greenberg.

But that will only get them so far. Last generation when people realised Microsoft timed exclusivity M.O. they started opting for the console with real exclusives where you could also play Bioshock, Mass Effect, Ninja Gaiden, Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Braid and Limbo.

Sharky2313560d ago

The one thing I noticed about the two presentations at gamescomwas

1- Microsoft was unclear about exclusivity or if a game was time exclusive

2- Sony tried to make it clear if it was coming first to there console or there console was the only place you could get a certain game.

That's why I've always respected sony more. Ms seems to try and be sneaky with too much stuff and sony seems to try to be upfront. I'm sure I'll get a ton of disagrees but it's just the way I see it.

iamnsuperman3560d ago (Edited 3560d ago )

Hang on though. Sony only did that because people complained after E3 that they didn't do that. It is good Sony did make the clarification and Microsoft should do the same next time

DualWielding3560d ago

Sony probably did that in reaction to Microsoft's action otherwise they would have done the same thing

colonel1793560d ago

"What Do the Console Manufacturers Achieve By Not Being Up Front with Us?"

That's only Microsoft. I don't think that Sony or Nintendo, or any other company has tried to deceive consumers into thinking that it will only come to their console f it's not.

Sony was VERY CLEAR at their conference with which games are 100% exclusive, which ones were timed exclusive and which ones have only exclusive content (which also mentioned which ones were timed too).

Microsoft is the only one that continues to lie to their consumers with shady wording and dirty tactics.

Clogmaster3560d ago

Even the Destiny presentation yesterday constantly used the words "Exclusive Timed DLC"

TFJWM3560d ago

Not sure why the title is Console Manufacturers, Sony was very upfront about what was and what was not only on PS. Nintendo makes it pretty clear as well.

iamnsuperman3560d ago

That is only because of the backlash Sony got after E3. I am glad they changed because it isn't confusing and it doesn't make it seem like they think we are idiots.

Digital_Anomaly3560d ago

Look at when the Destiny content was announced. It's referenced in the article. They stated exclusive when in fact it was timed (like really timed, lol) and the truth came out shortly after the original announcement. Both parties are guilty of this and as a consumer I think it sucks. Just tell me what I'm getting and when and stop with the politics!

choujij3560d ago (Edited 3560d ago )

True, but they were talking about the extra content, not the whole friggin' game being exclusive.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi3560d ago

MS are the devil when it comes to being upfront and honest. I loved Tomb Raider reboot and while I was planning on getting an xbox1 anyway I was hoping I could play the sequel on ps4. If this game eventually comes to Ps4 I'm gonna be extremely upset. Tired of MS's de facto exclusive BS.

TFJWM3560d ago

Microsoft already confirmed that the exclusively has a ''duration'' but they wouldn't say how long. So yes it will be out on PS4

MeLoveRamen3560d ago

That is how Microsoft works, they twist the words up so much that every fanboy thought that tomb raider was lifetime exclusive so they can get more sells, they try to play gamers like we are stupid and guess what reading most of the comments here at N4g, i think that most are. Right when they announced it i knew it was timed just look at my post history, i was spamming the every article with the same post that it was timed.

The give away was the wording on the trailers every lifetime exclusive for xbox said at the end of their trailers that it was "ONLY FOR XBOX" where as tomb raider said " EXCLUSIVE LY ON XBOX HOLIDAY 2015" biggest giveaway and no one noticed it.

Microsoft is dirty the way they PR their talk and not just straight up telling people the truth, like SONY. SONY was very clear to tell us what was lifetime exclusive and what was timed exclusive.

Software_Lover3560d ago

..... They said exclusive for Holiday 2015. Everything else they said on Xbox first, or first to console on XBone. Even after those announcements, Harrison said all games shown from here on out are exclusive to Xbox.

What was so hard to understand?

Sony did a good job, as others have stated, making sure people understood because they didn't want the same problems they had after E3. I'm sure after this Rise of The Tomb Raider incident, Microsoft will do the same.

HanzoHattori3560d ago

Playing semantics with the word exclusive is what fanboys do to justify their console of choice and it's what unscrupulous executives and developers do to sell games and consoles. I will not participate in this nonsense indirectly by buying the Tomb Raider game. All the complaining in the world won't do anything to change the situation, just let your wallets do the talking for you.

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood349d ago (Edited 349d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro349d ago (Edited 349d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881349d ago (Edited 349d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell348d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig349d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast349d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername349d ago (Edited 349d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g349d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka349d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

Zero Dawn sold really well so I’m not sure this belongs. The second game released next to a big game again and it hurt it some I forget what it was though, oh yeah Elden Ring .
But a good game is a good game to me I don’t care when they release personally but they do have to think about it when you want to get more people to buy it.
