Digital Foundry: GTA V PS4 and Xbox One compared in new frame-rate stress test.

Digital Foundry writes: The final analysis is in. We've put together a wealth of GTA 5 clips culled from capture sessions spanning over 20 different missions, concentrating on areas where the title's 30fps target frame-rate faces its toughest challenges. In comparing PS4 and Xbox One, the end result is fascinating; it shows that while there are some scenarios that prove equally challenging for both consoles, specific areas can see one platform out-performing the other. On a native 1080p title like this, we might reasonably expect PlayStation 4's more powerful GPU to demonstrate an unassailable advantage across the game, but the reality is a little more complicated.

"Travelling at speed through city junctions - such as Strawberry Avenue - turns out to be a particular Achilles Heel on PS4, with sustained drops to around the 24-26fps range at their worst. It's a situation that also applies to Xbox One, but to a consistently lesser degree when testing under the precise same conditions (and borne out in repeated tests). Put simply, in areas where junctions are stacked up one after the other, the Sony platform suffers more prolonged frame-rate drops when burning through traffic with your foot jammed to the floor. It's an interesting, recurring scenario that points to a CPU bottleneck, where Xbox One's increased clock-speed has an advantage when racing around these busy sections."

"However, while Xbox One enjoys an advantage during high-speed races in packed junction areas, it's clear the platform faces its own particular challenges. It drops a few frames during downtown driving outside of the problem junction areas, whereas PS4 remains solid. On top of that, we've already seen that Rockstar has made some visual cutbacks to its complex outdoor rendering, presumably to accommodate Xbox One's less capable graphics hardware, but in certain areas where cuts haven't been made, performance can dip. "

This is really interesting.

bluzone3444d ago (Edited 3444d ago )

here you forgot this part.

"presumably to accommodate Xbox One's less capable graphics hardware, but in certain areas where cuts haven't been made, performance can dip."

"Complex effects work, usually involving transparency effects (explosions etc) can also cause visible, sustained hitches in performance. Explosive missions with Trevor in Los Santos' outskirts show the biggest pitfall on Xbox One - with 24fps held at length during one shoot-out. Meanwhile, the PS4 has no issue with these segments, sparing one or two dropped frames just as alpha effects appear on-screen."

"It's an interesting result overall, leaving us with different performance profiles on each platform. It's an unmistakable advantage for Sony's platform when it comes to shoot-outs, but on the other hand, the Xbox One typically avoids the heavy mid-20s frame-rates that can kick in during high-speed chases."

PygmelionHunter3444d ago

I don't know about if I'm the only one but, watching fanboys argue about who gets the "best" sub-30 fps last-gen port is absolutely enjoyable. It's literally popcorn worthy.

pumpactionpimp3444d ago

@pygmelionhunter

I was thinking the same thing. they are literally taking shots at each other over, 2 fps here, 3 fps there. The game looks great on both consoles. It also seems to preform great on both. Seems like the deciding factor is personal preference to me.

BeefCurtains3444d ago

I don't have to read the article, the first two posts seem to quote the whole thing! Either way... Whatever, it's fun to play. When did FPS and resolution become the bar to measure fun?

darthv723444d ago

So that settles it....it's a draw.

fr0sty3444d ago (Edited 3444d ago )

@pump If the FPS were the only difference, that argument would be true. But, it isn't.

For a game that only got a modest visual upgrade, it's obvious that the engine isn't exactly suited for next gen. That is the one thing I can take away from looking at both versions. Last gen systems were CPU heavy, and weak to moderate on the GPU end. This gen it is the opposite. Both consoles have weak CPUs (with one having a modest increase in clock), and the GPUs are where the muscle is, with one having a substantially better GPU. Memory bandwidth also is a factor moreso than last gen. This is why all cross gen games suffer visually. Too hard to do things and make it run well across all systems on both generations.

bluzone3444d ago

@darthv72 that's exactly it. It is a draw

creatchee3444d ago

PygmelionHunter just won the internet. We can all go home now.

Foehammer3444d ago

A draw?

So no 40% power advantage then.

Didn't think there was.

Does this look like a draw to you? If so, call your optometrist.

bluzone3444d ago

@fr0sty As a PlayStation owner (all of them) I like that picture. But I also own a Xbox 360 and my original in the day Atari still. IMO both new consoles have their strengths. This article when read points this out.

tee_bag2423444d ago (Edited 3444d ago )

Haha.. this is like watching seagulls fight over crumbs.
PS4 is runs slightly better than X1.. as in 2-4 frames per second at times. Both run 30fps or under. Hardly show stopper either way.

Kal0psia3444d ago

I don't know, I enjoy playing games...

Timbo813444d ago

@fr0sty is right everyone - this isn't a hobby about having fun or escaping everyday life ... Blades of grass is what it's all about; more blades, longer blades and blades rendered in 1080p running at 60fps is the whole reason why everyone needs to own a PS4 and not the other system. Grass FTW - console war, over

fr0sty3444d ago (Edited 3444d ago )

Blades of grass here, more pixels there, more frames over there... on a consistent basis... If you are looking to purchase the more powerful console, that is definitely something one needs to consider. If 2 machines that share 80% of the same games and cost roughly the same (well, at least until this recent fire sale) want my money, how much each machine can do is something I'm going to consider. If those 80% of games look and run better on one machine than the other, I want to know. There's nothing wrong with that. Only a butthurt fanboy would say such a thing should be ridiculed and is unimportant.

Of course this is usually met with the "if you want more power, get a PC" argument, to which I'd respond "only if I intend on spending more than $400, not having as good of a controller, and having to deal with things like driver updates in order to get my games working optimally." (and no, using the console controllers on PC doesn't count, since you don't get bluetooth with touchpad and motion support)

kingfetish173444d ago

Exclusive PS4 controller functions alone warrant a PS4 version purchase for me.

maniacmayhem3444d ago

Has N4G seriously gotten to the point where people are arguing over how much grass one version has?

NoeLennon3444d ago

Lol, and you seem to have forgotten all the other parts of the article where the xbone comes out on top. Weird how that works eh?

miyamoto3444d ago (Edited 3444d ago )

LOL! Take away all the additional niceties from the PS4 version like fog, city smog, lens flares, increased amount of foliage and multi point soft lighting on characters, DualShock 4 audio and cut the PS4 version to Xbox One levels with highly zTurated colorz and high contrast.... we will see what version has the stable frame rate.

SideNote3444d ago

Right, that's it, I'm getting a frame rate upscaler thingy.

PONTIAC08G8GT3443d ago (Edited 3443d ago )

Sorry, but DF is nothing but a site to allow bickering and brings out the fanboys. Now there's ammunition for each side to fire at each other. They do this with every game and it's quite annoying. I can already see Xbox fanboys going "I'd rather have a better framerate then more blades of grass" and PS fanboys going "multiplats still are superior to the xbone." As long as sites like DF keep doing stupid tests like these, it will never end. And yes, I'm calling it a stupid test because 99.9% of the people playing the game, for either system, know about the framerate difference between the two.

Computersaysno3443d ago

Can't wait for the PC version.

XanderZane3443d ago (Edited 3443d ago )

Both versions of the game is flawed in some way. Who care?!? Just get the game on your platform of choice and enjoy. A couple of FPS here and there on each system isn't going to kill someone enjoyment of this game, I can tell you that. It's like Pepsi -vs- Coke really. Sure there are differences, but they still taste great to millions of people.

***************************** *************************
@fr0sty
That image was debunk a long time ago. Some troll on NeoGaf had posted it. That's not a XB1 pic. It's either a PS3/XBox 360 pic. In any case, it's a fake.

SilentNegotiator3443d ago (Edited 3443d ago )

So basically, they both occasionally drop to the mid-20fps...

...but the Xbone version looks like this/Ps4 version like this:
http://abload.de/img/sin1qm...
One of those hills looks like a hill; the other looks like a low res video game hill.

They run at the same performance (with different triggers of frame loss) but the Ps4 version has much more detailed environments. This is a pretty clear win for Ps4. It's a joke that anyone would argue otherwise.

fr0sty3443d ago (Edited 3443d ago )

@xander So you're saying Digital Foundry was debunked as lying about the Xbox One version? Nice try. Here it is on video.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3444d ago (Edited 3444d ago )

Not really any surprise in these statements since GDDR5 is specifically designed to make high performance graphical computations, which means stable frames when multiple events happen on-screen, while the Xbox One actually has to make sacrifices with graphics in order to process multiple events on-screen while maintaining stable framerates. The Xbox One can process single graphical events faster such as motion, speed, falling, flying, running, and similar events. But when it comes to explosions, crashes, gun fights, and events with multiple players, the PS4 wins hands down.

Volkama3444d ago

Gddr is good for shifting large chunks of data like textures. It's the additional rendering power on the GPU that makes the difference when things start exploding.

yarbie10003444d ago (Edited 3444d ago )

Now it's all for kicks and giggles. I like a good laugh too, but not a forced one.

Army_of_Darkness3444d ago

If that's the case, then what's the xbone's excuse?? Hmmm...

PONTIAC08G8GT3443d ago

@silly

Talk about holding a grudge. If the Xbox brand is around for the next 10 years, are you going to still hate it because of what MS announced for the X1 in 2013? PS3 was hated on for the insane price when first released and now PS4 is can do no wrong.

Me-Time3443d ago (Edited 3443d ago )

hahahahaha nice, very nice.

@PONTIAC08G8GT

PS3 had the two versions at launch: a "cheap" version with a smaller hard drive and the expensive one with a bigger hard drive. The X0 cost as much as the cheaper PS3, ONLY because of Kinect 2.0. It was shady how MS made their selling point of forcing the Kinect onto people. They said it was "essential" as one would tell consumers desperate enough to take a product that has that one special ingredient that REALLLLY makes the difference.

They knew damn that they would probably have to backtrack and make the X0 a standalone product. PS3 was hated on because it was so insanely expensive and didn't have the lineup of (exclusive) games the 360 had a year earlier. Devs were too concerned about the difficulty of having to code multi-plats and ALWAYS gave the PS3 the inferior (washed-out) sorry-excuse-of-a-try game - this includes GTA IV (I experienced both, 360 and PS3, versions at length). PS has usually been better with exclusives, and now with current-gen multi-plats, we can see that the tables have turned (or not) depending on how you look at it.

Let's just say it would have been a nightmare for Xbox if PS were to have had the opportunity of releasing one year earlier, instead of that one week head start that allowed the PS4 to double the amount that sold over the X0. Seriously, one week, how can you explain the PS4 still selling better than the X0 this past year (even in the US) whilst it took the PS3 6-7 years to catch up worldwide (but never in the US)? Europe is PS... country and North AMERRRICA is Xbox country.

himdeel3443d ago

#grassgate already happened on N4G with Mafia on PS3 and 360.

NoDucks3444d ago

Seems like it could possibly become a thing for this generation. Open world games with heavy AI and traffic seem to perform a touch better with the X1 CPU, and the rest are better on PS4....

slasaru013444d ago

When DX12 comes, Xbox will become a king for CPU heavy games if it shows such results even right now. Ps4 will amaze in exclusives but in multiplat, if the game is not some weird engine like MGS, it will suck. Remember my words. Devs will just skip it in order to save money for development, which will be 99% the same for Xbox and PC

XanderZane3443d ago

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Next year should be interesting.

MAULxx3443d ago

DX12 isn't coming to Xbox.

NarooN3443d ago

What are you on about? Even Phil Spencer himself said DX12 wasn't gonna make a huge difference on the X1, it's mainly for Windows.

mmcglasson3444d ago

Alright people that don't read well.

PS4 suffers some frame-rate issues at high speeds in heavy populated areas (24-26FPS at it's worst).

X1 suffers in areas were graphical cuts weren't made. "It also suffers frame drops during downtown driving outside of the problem junction areas, whereas the PS4 remains solid. In order for the X1 to maintain high FPS were PS4 does, graphical cuts had to be made.

All Sony really needs to do is send out an update that clocks the PS4 CPU at the same speed as X1.

Also keep in mind that this game was developed on an old gen engine. When Rockstar makes their next GTA for PS4/X1, the graphics are going to get much better on both systems, run much better on both systems, and probably take advantage of their (almost identical CPUs (currently the X1 running at an increased speed) and PS4's more powerful GPU.

The PS4 version of this game is the better version to get from a technical standpoint. Either system you get the game on will be worth it and it plays and looks much better than the PS3/360 version. I have it for PS3 (Collectors Edition) and now I have it for PS4 and I must say... it is noticeably different. I don't know if it's the extra details on the cars or what but I swear I haven't seen some of these vehicles in the PS3 version or they just honestly look that much better. FPS mode is awesome too. It's definitely more difficult performing drive-bys or other in car shooting in this mode, but when you're on your feet and shooting it out with enemies... it's really well done.

OpenGL3443d ago

I noticed the performance issues on the PS4 version as soon as I started driving around busy intersections and was pretty disappointed.

Overall the performance is still much better than it was on PS3/360 and the graphics are a lot nicer but it really stinks that the framerate didn't stay at 30fps.

r1sh123443d ago

Its nuts that people are arguing over a couple of frames.
But seriously both drop frames just in different scenarios.
They good thing to see, is the frames dont immediately jump back to 30 to only drop again, once dropped they remain stable at 25-28 (on both consoles) before returning to 30 when possible.
All in all I would say they are quite similar because they both excel in different parts and they both drop frames in different parts.

The great thing here, Rockstar shows what a remaster should be.
The increased the resolution and added some decent features.
All in all, if you buy this on your console of choice you wont look back

PONTIAC08G8GT3443d ago

@BiggerBoss

So graphics are what's important to you? I'm pretty sure anyone who bought DC would rather have a functioning and quality game over something that looks pretty. Last I checked, those who had FH2 were having a blast with it, cause it's fun. And those who owned DC weren't having fun. Games may look prettier on the PS4, but if the gameplay sucks is it really worth bragging about? PS4 is more powerful no doubt about it, but their exclusives need to perform better. Sunset Overdrive isn't a graphical marvel. Titanfall isn't even 1080p. Yet the gameplay is rock solid on both games. I buy games to play them, not stare at the screen and the graphics.

jacksons983443d ago

@PONTIAC08G8GT
That is the dumbest argument I've heard. What I'm tired of is people acting like you can't have graphics and gameplay.
Also for games like FPS better graphics have a substantial impact on the immersion and gameplay.

jebabcock3443d ago

People would have to actually buy fh2 to make those comments pontiac.. quit citing games that basically flopped as successes... Its sales are on par with drive club... drive Club has an excuse for its sales... Microsoft had a kinect reserve in place for six months, poor sdk's are you really that surprised PS4 games looked better than. What would happen if Sony gimped 10% of their gpu power? Ryse still won awards for its graphics what game on PS4 won anything for graphics in 2013?

In regards to this frame rate test. I find it interesting DF found only 1 area with shooting and where the x box 1 version dipped some frames. So is fine everywhere else DF? If you actually look at the scene they mentioned the lighting is very different on x box 1 version more realistic.. Isn't he supposed to be in the desert with sunshine? Why does the PS4 version look pale and dull.

jebabcock3444d ago (Edited 3444d ago )

@KNWS

The same can be said about every release game... Let's not move the goal posts for one title only...

DigitalRaptor3443d ago (Edited 3443d ago )

@ KNWS

You should blame Microsoft for forcing these devs to release at launch. That is what happened. You heard all about the Crytek crunch and how its employees were treated during that time. All the Xbone launch games could have done with more time, but you can use the same for any game that launches at the start of a console's lifecycle.

Ryse should have won awards for its facial detail and animations only, cause that's the only areas where it surpassed the best looking PS4 game in 2013. Killzone: Shadow Fall looks better, performs better, has more wide open levels, more variety in gameplay, better lighting, and I could go on listing. People are fickle - they'll fall for the skin deep gimmicks without looking further - that's why Ryse won graphics awards, cause people were only looking at the surface elements.

Also, stop trying to expose DigitalFoundry. They have more knowledge of the technology behind these games than you ever will, and their bias doesn't exist. PS4 version is better through and through - deal with it!

@HeMan76

Killzone SF amazing and the gameplay holds up very well (no FrameRate drops from what I've seen). I haven't seen Quantum Break or played it. FH2 looks good but Drive Club looks much better (I know one is open world and one is closed course). Drive Club has it's network issues but so does the Halo series remakes but it's not getting as much $h!t from you Xbox fanboys. I will admit that I'm not sure if the Drive Club issues have been resolved yet or not (I'm leaning with no as the PS+ version still isn't out) but in all honesty they should have never been there in the first place. I'm honestly getting sick of games being released before they are perfected and then patched later...

Oh and Infamous Second Son is probably one of the best looking games I've played and it's open world and it has lot more things going on than Ryse does. It has far less frame dips than Ryse too. Overall a better looking and playing game.

Just wait for Uncharted, GoW, and GT 7 (I highly doubt it will be open world like Forza but they go for realism and simulation racing). I perform racing games to be on closed courses unless it's a game like N4S, Burnout, etc.

Angerfist3443d ago

Gamer7773444d ago

No; the XB1 can probably just process the AI of the cars more quickly due to a CPU advantage. While the PS4 can handle effects better and those has a better frame rate during guns fights due its GPU advantage.

No_Limit3444d ago

Agreed. I was being sarcastic and an "/S". People must think it meant serious. Oh well.

Thw point of the matter is both versions are running great with some advantage for each..unlike AC unity, which is a mess. Kudos to Rockstar.

pompous3443d ago

Maybe, but not it this instance, no. Sorry, but that is one spot in the game that drops for ps4 and not xbox and if you see the videos that all the other city stuff where cpu ai is needed the xbox drops and ps4 doesn't proving that there is no cpu bottleneck like the biased author assumes. Their own videos contradict his article. The ps4 not only didn't get cut backs it also stays at a 30fps more consistently in this game.

Overall the game needed a bit more optimization, period. Fun game either way and it still looks and plays great on xbox as I was playing it at a friends the other day.

huh...it's like this silly console war that persistently rages on this site doesn't actually amount to anything, and all the time that fanboys on both sides wasted could have been better spent on almost anything else. The could have made a lemonade stand and had enough money to buy the other console so they don't have to ferociously defend a manufacturer just for the sake of feeling like their purchase was "right".
