Swiff’s Rant: The Final Fantasy XIII PC Version Is a Lazy Port

Gary Swaby at The Koalition writes: After getting a chance to try out the release of Final Fantasy XIII I was shocked at the lack of optimal options in the game, and even more shocked to learn that the game only supported a 720p resolution. Almost all PC games that want to be taken seriously will provide settings for users to adjust the game based on their hardware (the biggest exception being games from decades ago), but Final Fantasy XIII lacked any graphical or audio settings.

no where near as lazy as Dead Rising 3 Pc port

that pissed me off greatly
which is strange since all Capcom Pc ports are pretty great and run great

fluffydelusions3484d ago

I haven't played the dead rising 3 pc version but ff13 pc is just essentially the console version. No extra effort whatsoever. Scared what dr3 is now.

Jason_Plays_PC3484d ago (Edited 3484d ago )

These ports to PC are borderline offensive. Looking at dark souls 1 in particular.. Its as if we pc gamers dont really matter and we just take what we are given...Thankfully we can get access to the games files and fix things ourselves.

If you wanna throw us a rushed and careless port then price it accordingly and make it reflect the effort you made = £5.

TardcoreGamer3483d ago

At least DR3 had an options menu. FF13 is literally a copy/paste port of the XB360 version. It's a slap in the face!

DevilOgreFish3483d ago (Edited 3483d ago )

It's not the 360 version. movie sequences are much better looking. http://i.picpar.com/B8fb.pn...

suggestion points to 360's version being essentially the PC version until after it got compressed to DVDs and a tailored resolution.

According to Kitase -

"Let's not forget, when we developed the Final Fantasy 13 series, all three titles, at the early stages of development we were working on PC," Kitase told Eurogamer.

"Then we had to port it to the consoles."

Magicite3483d ago

PC master race gets delayed or unoptimized ports lately. Shows how much devs care about PC. Although its not surprising, most sales are coming from consoles, PCs are best for MMO games.

TardcoreGamer3483d ago

Honestly these crappy ports stand a better chance of delivering a >1080p@60+fps gameplay experience than ps4 and xbone.

PC is best for MMO, RTS, FPS, racing/flight sim, browser games, F2P, military sim, indie, space exploration, horror, VR, etc. FTFY

I've never gotten into the Final Fantasy series, but I may try with Final fantasy XV. It's disappointing to hear that the specs are dumbed down on the PC version of Final Fantasy XIII. Square Enix better not do this with XV because if they do, PC gamers will be livid.

Simco8763483d ago (Edited 3483d ago )

In my opinion you should start with X, then work your way VII, VIII, IX, XI.

Then go on a retro adventure with the classics. (I, VI, Tactics)

Godmars2903484d ago (Edited 3484d ago )

What makes no sense is PC gamers expecting something out of a company that makes console games.

And then the BS mentality that PC is "the best market" when all the money is coming from cheap steam releases, MMO subs and microtransactions.

And F*** the game itself is a piece of s***.

MrSwankSinatra3483d ago (Edited 3483d ago )

LOL I know right? The only time "Square Enix" (The Japanese side of the company) actually developed a game with PC in mind that wasn't a MMO was The Last Remnant. When they were still "Sqauresoft" the only games they put on PC was FFVII & FFVIII. When they were just called "Square" they put a few games on the PC-8801. When I say few I mean that literally because they only put 8 games on it and most of them were visual novels.

How is this example of console holding it back ? It's a publisher and group of studios that had no interest so far in PC gaming beyond a few ports and two mmos .

I mean you could and should pick better examples like most things Ubisoft for the past 5-10 years

Godmars2903483d ago

Said nothing about a game like this holding back PCs. It makes no sense to even consider this game because when honestly considered it offers nothing that advances anything.

Lon3wolf3483d ago

If they are going to release a game on a platform then there should be at least some work done it. Not sure why they are being given a free pass by being console devs? From Software did a great job on DS 2 after the first game was a bit shoddy (granted it was their first ever PC game so you can go a little lighter on them)and this is not the first game that SE has released on PC either.

Godmars2903483d ago

Not giving them a free pass: I'm dismissing them. If anything it should be considered insulting how they handled the menu. Nevermind the failure to upscale.

Lon3wolf3483d ago

So starting with "What makes no sense is PC gamers expecting something out of a company that makes consoles games"

Then going on about how PC is only funded by MMO or Microtransactions, tbh not sure what your point about this piss poor port is really, either PC players expect too much or the devs have no PC experience, which they actually do have quite a bit of.

Moncole3483d ago (Edited 3483d ago )

Compare this port to the other Square Enix PC ports. All of them are great but this one. But its great the game is 60FPS.

TardcoreGamer3483d ago

SE makes videogames, period. We have every right to expect excellence in their products no matter which platform they happen to be on.

I'd like to point out how superb the original Sleeping Dogs port was on PC. Why shouldn't we expect the same standard with FFXIII?

Godmars2903483d ago

The point is that you didn't get the same standard from FF13 as Sleeping Dogs. One was made by one team familiar with PC ports, the other wasn't, and the results were different.

Square should have done better, but they didn't. And some people, for some stupid reason, are defending them for doing it.

The whole final fantasy 13 is a lazy game in general. I know there are handful of people who love the 13 series. But the majority of the people hates it.

Perjoss3483d ago

At this point Square Enix is just trying to get money for nothing, and their chicks for free.

The 7 Best Final Fantasy Characters: Unveiling the Legends

While FFVII ranks highly, there's more to the series than one game. Here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best Final Fantasy characters.

220°

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

Einhander1972126d ago

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus126d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim125d ago (Edited 125d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda125d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B124d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125125d ago (Edited 124d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic124d ago (Edited 124d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic124d ago (Edited 124d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981124d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot124d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda124d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

-Foxtrot124d ago

Elda

Not just mine mate

A large majority

So….

Traecy123d ago

N4G commenters such as yourself aren't the majority. The game was well received.

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay124d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12126d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay124d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183126d ago (Edited 126d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5

KillerB125d ago

my favorite jrpg trilogy ever
