Rise of Tomb Raider: Only a Timed Exclusive for Xbox one Holiday 2015? Greenburg Denies

Geoff Keighley shares some info on Tomb raider Exclusivity.

Enemy3544d ago (Edited 3544d ago )

Unless Microsoft is publishing the game, it's only "100% exclusive to Xbox" for a period of time. BioShock all over again. Careful wording can do wonders.

cleft53544d ago

Yeah if this was 100% exclusive that might be something to get excited over, but all this means is that the ps4 will release in February 2016 and be the definitive version. If Microsoft is going to go all out like this they need to make these permanent exclusives. While Tomb Raider was a great game, I am fine without playing the exclusive on PS4. Honestly, I can just watch someone else play it on Twitch or Youtube and get the same experience because of how cinematic the game is in detail.

mkis0073544d ago

They have already clarified one game as being lifetime exclusive (titanfall) Why cant they use those same words with this?

johndoe112113544d ago (Edited 3544d ago )

Personally, I don't care whether it's a timed exclusive or not, microsoft and SE have just ensured I will never buy this game or any other TR game.

I have absolutely no issues if companies want to get exclusives developed by third parties, that's fair game (somewhat), but I draw the line when a game has been a multiplatform game for as long as people can remember and then a company goes and moneyhat's it to make it an exclusive, timed or not. That, is BS.

This is exactly what is destroying this community and people are not seeing it. How the hell do you moneyhat a multiplatform game??? Doesn't anyone see something seriously wrong with this???

Tomb raider is a massive franchise, a massive multiplatform franchise. This is basically a kick in the nuts to every ps4 and pc owner. Unless gamers stand up and make a statement about these anti consumer and anti gaming industry practices, things will only get worse.

I'm officially done with the TR franchise. And if anyone, including sony, pulls this sh!t again, I'm gonna do the same exact thing.

GarrusVakarian3544d ago

Wow, if this is indeed 100% X1 exclusive, then MS must have paid seriously BIG bucks for the rights, because the PS4 version of Tomb Raider: DE outsold the X1 version 2:1.

DOMination-3544d ago

I doubt ps4 only owners would buy it anyway when Uncharted is likely to release the same month. If it releases later on ps4 then I think everyone wins in the end

16bitNutritionist3544d ago

Sony paid for Tomb Raider to be exclusive after it was developed for the Saturn then ported to the PS1 and also paid for Final Fantasy to be exclusive after it was a Nintendo exclusive from 7 onwards, these things happen I don't know why everyone is getting in such a mess about it. Probably wnt be forever. What about Nintendo making Resident Evil exclusive on GameCube for a few years after it had been on Playstation, Saturn, N64 and PC since its first incarnation in some form or another.

gatormatt803544d ago (Edited 3544d ago )

Agreed. If this is a lifetime exclusive, then just come out and say it. MS not saying that like they did with Titanfall is telling...

Chevalier3544d ago

Same as:

GTA IV and DLC
Mass Effect
Resident Evil 5
Star Ocean
Ninja Gaiden
Etc.

The wording is suspect as well. The trailer says fall 2015 exclusively on Xbox One. As in the ONLY Tomb Raider launching that fall. If anything they would followup like Titanfall where they say Lifetime Exclusive for the 1st game.

Bennibop3544d ago (Edited 3544d ago )

Sony never paid for final fantasy, it was because Nintendo would not switch from expensive cartridge manufacture that also lacked memory that dc could offer! And tomb raider appeared on dreamcast and PC so Sony never paid for that exclusive!

joeorc3544d ago

exactly @Enemy:

The business model of Square Enix is centered on the idea of "polymorphic content", which consists in developing franchises on all potential hardware or media rather than being restricted by a single gaming platform!

That does not preclude Timed Exclusives of course

MorePowerOfGreen3544d ago (Edited 3544d ago )

Pro Sony media and fanboys are reading too much into MSFT's caution when speaking about this(Careful wording). MSFT knows there are passionate fans and crazy rabid mouth pieces that will not like this.

There was/is nothing said that suggests a timed exclusive, what you're noticing from MSFT and devs is timidness and caution.

The fanboys have to move on. Haters have become so spoiled and unchallenged the crying feels more like folks are mad XB1 one up-ed PS4 *vs* being just about the game itself.

I'm assuming gamers are mad because devs gave XB1 this type of support and this angers PS4 fans, that devs still have enough faith or knowledge in what MSFT has planned to do a deal like this.

gatormatt803544d ago

@MorePowerOfGreen

Gamers aren't mad because a Dev decided to give XB1 support. They're mad because a lifelong multiplat game has just allegedly gone exclusive. I say allegedly because we still don't have conformation if its a lifelong exclusive or timed.

For you to even suggest such reason shows just how out of touch you really are...

HollywoodLA3544d ago

I'm a bit drunk, and currently enjoying Michael Jackson tunes. Was tomb raider announced as exclusive until the 'end of time?' ..or are we getting the 'timed' exclusivity?

Dee_913544d ago

@johndoe11211
Maybe they needed the money ? I would rather see Tomb Raider be an exclusive for however long than to see it die off because insufficient funds.
It does sucks but these things happen for a reason. As a fan of the franchise I hope they do well on Xbox.I probably will have an xbox by the time it release so I more than likely will be picking it up.

user3672723544d ago

Horrible news for gamers as a high profile franchise like TR should be available to as many people as possible just like I am wishing No Man Sky is available on the xb1 as well. Oh well..just mean either have to suck it up or swallow your pride and buy the necessary hardware to play them. Like they say..it is strictly business

XisThatKid3544d ago

Of course this isn't going to be admitted damnear year and a half away.

ziggurcat3544d ago

@MPOG:

"There was/is nothing said that suggests a timed exclusive"

it's a multiplatform title. it's timed. no question. they have a habit of calling something exclusive even though it's just timed.

starchild3544d ago

@johndoe11211

Well said. I completely agree on every point. This is a bad business practice and none of us should support it.

Kribwalker3544d ago

So all of you that are angry about tomb raider being a multi play game going exclusive must also be pissed about bloodbourne as well, seeing as most media says it's the next gen continuation of the multi plat dark souls. Or the apparent exclusivity of PT, the newest former multi plat silent hill game.

Thanks for the disagrees, your hypocritical ways are dually noted

morganfell3544d ago (Edited 3544d ago )

@Enemy,

It doesn't matter who publishes the game. MS published Mass Effect on the Xbox 360. That came to the PS3. Microsoft published Jade Empire on the Xbox and a different publisher (Take 2) put it on PC.

@ kribwalker,

Are you an imperceptive fellow? Bloodbourne was created from the ground up as an exclusive. It was not a multiplat game published in various iterations for years that then went exclusive on the least selling console.

Syntax-Error3544d ago (Edited 3544d ago )

Dude, did you not see the new technology this game is going to have. This game is HUUUUUGE! It went from like 90 mocap facial points of reference to like 7000 with the new face paint that glows. That means the characters will look like real people. To make this an exclusive is a travesty especially since TR has always been multiplatform.

obz3544d ago

+cleft5

"The ps4 will release in February 2016 and be the definitive version"

No it won't. The PC version will.

ziggurcat3544d ago

@krib:

bloodborne is an entirely new IP. it's not a sequel to demon's or dark souls.

Pogmathoin3543d ago

I see many comments on this not being new, an old business practise, and that Sony has done it before too, also, I believe GTA San Andreas was timed as well. I guess the issue here is simply when it happens to Sony, it hurts ten fold...... Must be something about they're fan base.... That sheeple thing I guess. If this was the other way round, it would be called a smart business move by Sony, and not hurting the industry....

+ Show (21) more repliesLast reply 3543d ago
styferion3544d ago

a logical move, by hiding whether it's timed or not they can get sales from fans who buy XB1 for this and avoiding direct competition with Uncharted 4. Then they can release it on other platform when there's no competition.

logical, but by no means pleasing move.

Bennibop3544d ago

I am sure this will be cleared up within the next few hours. We know that the game was in development for PS4 and PC also so I cant see it as being permanent.

Sonital3544d ago

This is equally vague as it doesn't confirm or deny anything yet it is "official":

http://tombraider.tumblr.co...

Eonjay3544d ago

I wish everything wasn't a technical riddle. Why can't we ever get a straight answer. Everything must be inferred.

cleft53544d ago

Whenever something is vague like that is just confirmation of another sort. If Microsoft had this game as a permanent exclusive they would say so. If they don't clarify it then that means it will come to other platforms.

kneon3544d ago

@Eonjay

They can't come out and say it will be available on other platforms, if they did that then hardly anyone would buy an xb1 just to play this game a few months early.

Sonital3544d ago

@Eonjay I think part of it is the amount of FUD the gaming-news media/commentators spread. You could argue that it is all BS but 9/10 times there's a reference to a previous incident so...

JeffGUNZ3544d ago

@ Sonital

What? The first sentences is clear as day

"As you may have seen, we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox."

My take on this is that this single game will be exclusive and NOT the tomb raider franchise. I really don't see this game going to PS4 unless they are lying to us.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 3544d ago
LordMaim3544d ago

I guess they needed to buy something to compete with Uncharted 4 at Christmas 2015.

tehpees33544d ago

Of course it will be timed. Money hatting is all Microsoft can do.

LackTrue4K3544d ago (Edited 3544d ago )

People need to relax, in a year or so the game will come to pc/PlayStation4.

Microsft is up against a wall with out a large list of exclusive, so they got to pull some off of third-party developers....suck to other gamers. But I look @ the Brightside, I expect a later Version of the game with all DLC's.

After seeing what happen to Crytek, only dumb developers will fallow and try there luck!!

Nineball21123544d ago

Sorry, but I don't trust Greenburg at all.

He "might" be telling the truth, but I don't trust him.

Gamer19823544d ago

Oh dear MS have leaked its timed already and already on damage control.. Crystal dynamics cannot say it is as part of the agreement but MS can.

MeLoveRamen3544d ago

It is a guarantee timed exclusive, just rewatch the event every lifetime real exclusive for the xbox 1 said "ONLY ON XBOX 1" on the screen after their trailers and the Tomb Raider trailer it said " EXCLUSIVELY ON XBOX 1 HOLIDAY 2015" case solve its timed it will release for ps4 later.

showtimefolks3544d ago

okay for MS to buy exclusive games but not okay for sony to buy destiny exclusive DLC?

i see how this works, as long as MS is doing the buying its okay

TheRealHeisenberg3544d ago

It was okay when it was the other way around and okay when it was the other way before that until it went back around right?

Blaze9293544d ago

@johndoe11211 all those feelings. Mixed with business and gaming? No no no no

kenshiro1003544d ago

Instead of using that money towards a new IP, Microsoft chooses to do this.

Why am I not surprised...

Majin-vegeta3544d ago

It was obvious all you had to do was read between the lines.SE have done some stupid things in the past.I doubt they were gonna leave out a 7+ million fanbase in the cold.

Tony-A3544d ago

It's well over 7+ million by now.

I knew it all along, though. When a game is exclusive for good, they say that "this game is coming exclusively to the Xbox One." Period. They don't, nor would they ever say "this game is coming exclusively to the Xbox One in 2015."

It's a tactic both Sony and MS have used for a while now to give the illusion of full exclusivity.

On another note, there's no way they would miss out on so many potential buyers, especially when the platform you're missing out on has a massive install base in it's youth and will no doubt double by the time the game hits.

Companies like that look at the attach rate and unit sales on the PS4 and think "there's no way we're missing out on that." A remastered PS3 game (albeit regarded as one of the greatest of all time) just sold over 1.5 million units in 24 hours on the system. They made millions off of a title that was still fresh in everyone's minds and moved extra units to boot!

Safe to say, there's no company out there that would make an exclusive sequel to a title that sold double on it's opposing platform.

Kidmyst3544d ago

Exactly, it's over a year away, in about 8 Months or so we'll be seeing screen comparisons of Rise of Tomb Raider and Rise of Tomb Raider the definitive edition to release Feb. 2016.

DevilishSix3544d ago

10 million sold thru to customers, not 7 million. Sony announced this about an hour ago at ther presser.

TimeSkipLuffy3544d ago

There is only one way this game stays exclusive to MS:

IF MS paid them developing cost + some millions extra!

So any income or non income will be all on MS while SE still keep the license and any income through licensing.

ScorpiusX3544d ago (Edited 3544d ago )

Or just buys the IP, either way smart move for them.

TimeSkipLuffy3544d ago

yeah. IF The developer would have agreed to that but then they would loose the right to develop more games or DLCs without the consent of the IP owner.

Visiblemarc3544d ago

I disagree. I love the IP, but the model of snagging third party stuff out of under the noses of fans is a terrible way to get them to buy your console.

Something like Titanfall, while third party, was different because the IP wasn't universally known/enjoyed.

A move like this, though likely timed, is extortion. Not only does it make me think less of MS, it confirms that this game will be bargain bin for me. I was going to preorder it, but supporting a decision this bad is not for me.

bakasora3544d ago (Edited 3544d ago )

Or just give money to the guy who makes the decision in SquareEnix - Crystal Dynamic.

aviator1893544d ago

I suppose we won't really know until after the game launches for the Xbox one in 2015.

matrixman923544d ago

its being published by MS...at most, expect a PC release in a year after release

ShadowWolf7123544d ago (Edited 3544d ago )

I doubt it.

matrixman923544d ago (Edited 3544d ago )

http://minus.com/i/ox5UeaTU... yes it is being published by MS

this was posted on neogaf, I can get the actual link but its down rigth now. I beleive it was on xbox news wire

Welp, Keighley just tweeted that it was a typo. SE is publishing, my bad I guess...or Microsofts bad

joeorc3544d ago

@matrixman92

http://i.gyazo.com/cd794872...

Microsoft as publisher has been removed!

Budobear3544d ago

Source please?
(I only ask as I've not read that anywhere else)

Imalwaysright3544d ago (Edited 3544d ago )

TR and Crystal Dynamics are owned by a publisher: Square Enix. No way in hell that MS is publishing TR especially since the game has been in development for quite some time and was previously announced to be in several platforms.

Edit Who is shinobifist? Is that a Square or MS representative?

Zero Dawn sold really well so I’m not sure this belongs. The second game released next to a big game again and it hurt it some I forget what it was though, oh yeah Elden Ring .
But a good game is a good game to me I don’t care when they release personally but they do have to think about it when you want to get more people to buy it.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

gamerant.com
isarai468d ago (Edited 468d ago )

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness466d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch466d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730466d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior466d ago (Edited 466d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot468d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto466d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior468d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B466d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws466d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730466d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69466d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.

They're all solid games, but nothing quite matched the epicness of the first one for me. I think the 3rd one started off strong but once you got to that Peruvian area it took a massive nose dive for me.

lelo2play847d ago (Edited 847d ago )

You got to be kidding!
The first one was great at the time... but this latest trilogy of Tomb Raider games are also great.

LiViNgLeGaCY847d ago

I think he means the first one in the new trilogy.

CrimsonWing69846d ago

I meant the first of the new trilogy.

Furesis846d ago

yeah i remember liking the first one when it came out, so i tried the second one sometime after release and i just could not get into it, i couldn't finish it. So i might try the 3rd now that i got it for free but ehh. But i do remember enjoying the first one, i wonder if i'd feel the same way if i played it today? Better not taint those memories lol

ANIALATOR136846d ago

I was the same for some reason. Never finished the second one. I got like half way through maybe.

ActualWhiteMan846d ago (Edited 846d ago )

The first one of the latest trilogy is a masterpiece

Claim games by going to the website and login using ur credentials. I did the same as i couldnt use epic launcher. Also try reinstalling Epic Launcher I did it and it worked.
