Xbox One sales still lagging behind PS4 despite price cut

Despite ditching Kinect and having been on the receiving end of a sizeable price cut, Microsoft’s Xbox One console continues to be outsold by Sony’s rival PS4, a leading retailer has suggested.

it never been about the price
it's about what gamers want to play on

it's every one choice

Godmars2903563d ago

No. It was about how customers wanted to be treated. The amount of trust and faith being asked by a company that hasn't shown much. Just expect it.

PONTIAC08G8GT3563d ago (Edited 3563d ago )

Please stop your cries. Stop singing the same song. It's been over a year ago that they announced DRM and the price. Get over it already. They changed everything because people like you cried about DRM. Now besides hardware specs, two systems that do the same thing.

How customers want to be treated? Explain to me how they mistreated customers. This argument is older then Jesus. I guess you feel Sony loves you and cares only about you and the gamers, not profits. Thats why you pay now to play multiplayer right? They love you so much they want to charge you for it. And they loved you when the PS3 released and they charged what, $600? Yea, they love you alright...your wallet, just like every company.

thenickel3563d ago

MS made mistakes that seem to have really affected them. Truth be told now they're on the right track and people especially in the states will eventually catch on. All of this they did us so wrong is really reaching. I guess the fear of any 1 sided gamer would be allowing its imaginary competition to build up any type of momentum. It's going to come down to games, pricing, and features for all 3 consoles. Something tells me MS is finally listening and set to prove a point. Unfortuantely for them Sony isn't playing either nor Nintendo. Good times ahead folks.

BitbyDeath3563d ago

@Pont, you may have missed it but MS tried to take advantage of gamers for their own personal gain. It is not something you should simply forgive them for. They intentionally tried to destroy gaming, and are now paying for it.

Fearmonkey3563d ago

@PONT - As a long time Xbox and 360 gamer who couldn't stand Sony for many years, I bought a PS4 because Sony changed for the better and MS changed for the worst.

How they mistreated customers? - While they didnt technically mistreat anyone, they sure didn't care about their loyal customers when they hid their intentions regarding an always online console and DRM. They let Adam Orth get crucified for his statements regarding always online, and later tried to go with it, even though their own execs were saying one thing while MS said another (Phil Harrison about the 24 hour limit)

MysticStrummer3563d ago

@Pontiac - If you found out that Hannibal Lecter had been planning to eat your liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti, but changed his mind, would you then accept an invitation to hang out with him?

"How customers want to be treated? Explain to me how they mistreated customers. This argument is older then Jesus. I guess you feel Sony loves you and cares only about you and the gamers, not profits."

One company gives a better illusion of caring about customers than the other. One company saw the negative feedback about certain rumored policies and made sure people knew that they weren't incorporating those policies, while the other company saw that negative feedback and went ahead with those policies anyway.

"Thats why you pay now to play multiplayer right?"

Sony saw that a large percentage of gamers didn't mind paying for what they were giving away, so now they charge for it. Thanks for that, 360 gamers!

Boody-Bandit3563d ago (Edited 3563d ago )

@MysticStrummer

Don't lie. Is this

"If you found out that Hannibal Lecter had been planning to eat your liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti, but changed his mind, would you then accept an invitation to hang out with him?"

yours, a copy and paste or a MysticStrummer original?

Either way

@thenickel
Look who dusted off his (probably one of many) account, thenickel. Wow, what's up nickel? Been a long time. Or has it? ;)

On topic:
I don't see things turning around for MS any time soon. I believe they have a consumer confidence problem that is a detracting factor for MS more so than system selling games or pricing alone.

They could try another price cut but Sony is probably in a position now that they can match it.

The only game they have coming out that could possibly give them a boost, at least in the NA and maybe Europe, is Halo Collection. Than again the same thing was said about TitanFall and the $399 SKU without Kinect.

This upcoming holiday season will be most telling.

Godmars2903563d ago

Rather amazing how many people seem to think that the DRM issue neither had nothing to do with the XB1's problems, or that price was the only thing wrong.

Pontiac, yes, I bought a PS3 at $600. I wanted the BR player, a media device for streaming, and most standalone players at the time where well over twice the price. And it played all PS1/PS2/PS3 games. That was my thinking at the time.

With the XB1, MS wanted your money, wanted an initial large down payment, then wanted subscription fees just for the console to work as advertised. In addition they then set conditions in which you used it, where by all counts trying to establish how and many people used it, then manage how games, additional bought product, was bought sold and shared. Explained it badly, kept on explaining it badly, while either dismissing or outright ignoring rather common sense questions with what they planned to do. So unsurprisingly based on that people didn't want to buy their product and their plans fell apart.

With XBL whether or not you bought an Xbox 360 for gaming which it supposedly paid for, you had to have a paid gold account to actually to anything. That's only changed recently in the wake of the console's launch.

With PSN, it was just a bonus, straightforward feature which game you online access like any other online related device. Later PS+ gave sale discounts and "free" games. With the announcement of the PS4 this has changed under the likewise excuse of supporting online gaming, with MMOs as an often additional paid service an exception.

So in closing, no. Neither MS nor Sony "loves" gamers or consumers. There are however obvious differences in how they treat the people who's money they're after. If you only care to look.

thenickel3563d ago

Well if it isn't good old Brutal calling me out for whatever reason! I've been around here and there reading comments but just kind of lost that gamer feeling. Anyways now trying to get it back and come in as neutral as possible. So for the record I'm not here to fight or brag about who does what better or worst. I simply read comments and voice my opinion nothing more. Honestly I don't expect to be here long because I know opinions like the ones I have upset loyal gamers and the guys ;) up top. For the record I've always loved Sony but preferred MS a little more.

OT: This holiday and so on I'm willing to bet things change drastically for X1. If MS can keep going the direction they're going maybe just maybe they will gain some much needed momentum.

Everybody knows the DRM stuff hurt MS and because of it (along with pricing) the outcome was inevitable. Now MS is on the right track so we will see if the games coming have a huge impact or not that simple.

Why o why3563d ago (Edited 3563d ago )

Nobody said anything about love pontiac. Stop deflecting. Ask the people who owned 360s that now own ps4s if they feel they were mistreated. Obviously you believe nobody could possibly feel that way. It's obviously not the price anymore and nobody can say its the lack of games so maybe you should look further back to the last third of last gen when ms done the absolute minimum even though I've heard many brag how limitless their wealth is. You would of thought they would of thrown some of that infinite cash on competing with the bankrupt sony. They chose not to and that didn't sit well with many.

Truth is, theres a plethora of reasons the x1 is lagging behind the ps4 not just one. They've made strides to fix the fixable but they'll never be able to fix the hardware...... not to say its broken but its not as developer friendly as its competition or its predecessor.

Sony learnt from their arrogance, ms is paying for theirs.

Btw if 'people like us' just accepted the fudge packing and ms continued with their drm plans, their console would of truly been dead on arrival. Just look at the impact the intended plans have had. Trust me, ms was smart not to listen to the drm defence force. They listened to pre orders or lack of.

Ihatetrolls763563d ago

You should do some research on how shady sony is you would crap

FallenDesigns3563d ago

Honestly i think im one of the few gamers that actually likes DRM well not the part where i cant trade my games the part where everything is digital and i dont have to change Discs. Steam has been doing it for a while and i love it cause DRM allows them to give really good deals.

The point is DRM isn't shady or something completely unacceptable in my opinion, also its nothing new either it been around for a while.

For me all that matters is the games and experiences it has to offer, the slight lower resolutions don't really bother me that much. If i really wanted the best graphics i would just use my computer and honestly for me graphics resolution as long as its over 720p doesn't bother me.

So what i would say to anyone looking to buy a console go buy the one with the games you would want to play and enjoy.

Also I'd that like to add that i believe Sony and Microsoft are all in it for the money. There is no better company in my eyes it's just business.

Well this is all my beliefs and opinions i hope you guys can respect it as i respect your opinions and beliefs.

AndrewLB3563d ago

I find it hilarious that the usual suspects keep repeating the absolute lie that Microsoft "tried to take advantage of customers for gain" via the DRM they announced at E3. The fact alone that they dropped the idea when people voiced opposition should be applauded. Those who have not done so clearly have an agenda that is anti-Xbox and are not objective people.

Then when you factor in how Sony HAS ADMITTED that they had planned THE EXACT SAME type of DRM for the PS4, and after watching Microsoft get annihilated by the gaming press did they quietly remove the DRM in the day 1 patch.

Andrew House Said:

" Dating from about our February event, there had been questions about what our online policy would be. And I have to say that we were slightly perplexed, because we had no intention of changing from a model that I think has served us really well for several platform life-cycles. And then, of course, it was really the actions of others, and the reaction coming from consumers, which led to more speculation. So we felt that with E3, and Monday night’s press conference, it was a really good opportunity to set the record straight. But there weren’t any changes that we’d been considering.

What you saw coming from gamers is not just, in my view, the views of the vocal minority. It became an expression of a little bit of concern bubbling up around the subject of what ownership means in an age of digital content overall. We and other entertainment industry players need to be very conscious of that and very careful. Bringing it back to the fundamentals again, we need to be fair and to think of the consumer experience first."

And here, more: http://ps4daily.com/2013/06...

Godmars2903563d ago (Edited 3563d ago )

@AndrewLB:
I find it sad that XB1 defenders can't accept that the console isn't selling well, because the console isn't selling well.

MS made some mistakes, damaged their rep and the Xbox brand, and have yet to recover. Expect only that all should be forgiven, that it should happen over night, and that all of the "hater talk" is keeping it from happening.

Meanwhile the same people complaining/defending about this incident only badmouthed the PS3.

Hell. Would say give it a rest but what's the point of that?

Christopher3563d ago

***Then when you factor in how Sony HAS ADMITTED that they had planned THE EXACT SAME type of DRM for the PS4***

This is not true. The only people who think this are true are people who keep listening to that MisterX site and similar people who just want to believe it to be true.

Again, this is not true.

What Sony said is that any DRM would be left up to the Publishers and that they, Sony, would not be using any DRM policies themselves. They even went so far as to say that Online Passes would be going away as well.

SilentNegotiator3563d ago

Besides that:

1) The Ps3 delivered better/more content for the last 3 years of the 7th gen, so there were more excited fans on the PS side of things.

2) Ps4 was cheaper, and now has the ball rolling while Xbone is still trying to regain momentum (And they haven't yet...selling double of the sales of May in June when there was such a dropoff in May - thanks to their announcement of the Kinectless bone a month ahead of time, probably intentionally so that they could have the "massive surge" and also pretend like it was due to their E3 showing - isn't impressive).

3) It's got more of something that early adapters and developers are excited about. hint: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0...

4) Better multiplats.

madpuppy3563d ago

Don't listen to a word of what PONTIAC08G8GT says.

MS is a repeat offender when it comes to screwing over it's customers. The only reason that all that DRM and online verification didn't fly is because we fought and Sony/Nintendo didn't play ball.

what they were trying to do was so wrong, so against consumer ownership rights, only someone like Bobby Kotick would get wet dreams over it.

I say...NEVER FORGET....because maybe next time the bad guys may win. and that is something the consumer as well as the gamer cannot afford.

Mr_Writer853563d ago

@Andrew

Can you not read?

"" Dating from about our February event, there had been questions about what our online policy would be. And I have to say that we were slightly perplexed, because we had no intention of changing from a model that I think has served us really well for several platform life-cycles."

I don't remember the Ps1/2 or 3 having anything like the DRM that MS was planning.

"And then, of course, it was really the actions of others, and the reaction coming from consumers, which led to more speculation."

Here he is saying its because MS plans were made public that people assumed Sony was going the same way. In fact remember pre E3? There where tons of articles saying Sony planned to have the same policy's.

"So we felt that with E3, and Monday night’s press conference, it was a really good opportunity to set the record straight. But there weren’t any changes that we’d been considering. "

So he says there where NO CHANGES.

How you got Sony planning the same as MS and then changed their mind from any of that I have no idea. You either can't read English very well, or have a learning difficultly.

Either way that's no excuse for making stuff up.

rainslacker3563d ago

@Andrew

How can you say Sony definitely had planned the same kind of DRM and then use a quote from a top Sony exec which completely contradicts what you say was definitely going to be there?

Andrew House said they hadn't planned on changing anything when it comes to the distribution of games on it's systems. They were going to do the same thing they had been doing for the past 3 gens...which is leaving retail alone.

1. More diverse library of games
2. More quality Indie games
3. Cheaper Online
4. Better free games
5. Better multiplatform games
6. Better exclusives
7. More exclusives
8. Morpheus
9. Better/stronger hardware and more bang for your buck compared to the competition.
10. Sony's proven support track record to the last minute and beyond each generation with AAA releases.
11. No anti-consumer moves desperately trying to shake off off their backs.

Hardcore_gamerxbox3562d ago

Like Sony did last generation and people still bought ps3 btw it is about price too ps3 start selling really good when it had price cuts and I'm sure Xbox one would have sell a lot more if xbox one without kinect was $350

Sevir3562d ago

@AndrewLB... Dude your reading comprehension skills are that of a new born puppy. What you posted was in no way shape or form a confession or admittance of Sony ever considering going about MS's way of business... Andrew House clearly states that as far back as February even before MS's reveal that there were questions and speculation from the media that Sony would in some way go the way of DRM, and he said their was no change to their plan as EVEN in the PS4 reveal It was mentioned that You will play and own your games the same way you did on PS3/PS2/PS1 Mark Cerny and Shu said this. House continued in that same quote you posted saying it was perplexing to him and everyone who designed the PS4 that these questions and allegations were being brought to them when they never made a mention or even designed the platform to work the way they MS was reportedly designing the unannounced XBO. They used E3 to clear the are and address concerns... They were never planning on implementing anything DRM related, what they did, was see the negative feedback back and used the opportunity to completely distance themselves from MS. And this has been said from time and time again from Shu, Andrew, and Mark.

You can go watch the PS4 reveal. The first 30 minutes of the presenation Mark Cerny states that you'll enjoy your games in the same manner as you did on PS3, disc and digital.

You posting that post actually defeats your argument and completely shows you don't know how to comprehend a thing!

Kidmyst3562d ago

I canceled my Xbone pre-order shortly before launch because I wasn't comfortable supporting MS tactics. If they had not received a backlash, all those features would be in the console, if the Xbone was strong and outselling the PS4, MSFT would bring them back. This is good for gamers because it sends a message to the Industry what we support in terms of policies.

Price has its influence just as much as appeal of the software. When the PS1 launched at $100 less than the Sega Saturn...you bet that price was the key factor.

Sega had a large following at the time. Their brand was popular but it was the cheaper point of entry into the up and coming age of 3D gaming that made all the difference.

Sony didnt have all the studios they have now. They relied heavily on 3rd parties and made the appropriate deals to get developer support for their new platform.

i remember that time very well. there was a high level of resentment from the nintendo and sega fans about this new company entering into the fray. Sony had to work their ass off to generate appeal for their brand. they had allot to prove and have done so with great success.

MS made the wrong move this time around by thinking their price point was the better value. Granted they did launch with a more diverse library but the bad press and word of mouth and especially the price is what hurt them. no matter how many great games get released for the platform, there will be that resentment from some gamers about how MS charged more for a lesser system than sony.

the XB1 is very much in the Saturn's place right now. But the difference between MS and Sega is MS will do what it has to in order to right the wrongs and keep the system alive. Sega had many chances to do the same but the decision makers in JP felt the US was a lost market and so we never got the great capcom games or sega exclusives in the West like JP and even EU did.

Clogmaster3563d ago (Edited 3563d ago )

Saturn had a sick 2D processor though! They got murdered by Playstation still.

They both launched at crazy high prices given inflation.

Pogmathoin3563d ago

Next article, day follows night..... Jeez can there be any decent articles anymore? Its just like Jerry Springer now here.... Why is there a rush to get this crap? Lets actually talk about games and the fun it brings us.

Funantic13563d ago

The sales wouldn't just go up so suddenly. We're still seeing new signs of the X1 improving in sales tho. Give it time.

kenshiro1003562d ago

Give it time?!

If Titanfall didn't work, neither will the price cut.

CJDUNCAN3563d ago

I guess they expected the X1 to pull even in a month? -__- Some of these articles are getting ridiculous.

Sheikh Yerbouti3563d ago (Edited 3563d ago )

What month do you want...? How about the one where MS met Sony's price and still they didn't gain any ground. Not any. July will be the same. Sony keeps going up. And I'm not talking WW, I'm talking US. WTF happened?

Could it be that XB360 users were in general unsatisfied with their systems that past few years, and returned their loyalty to Sony for Uncharted, inFamous, Blood Borne, Order, etc....! Maybe...I'll wait till Master Chief shows up. But MS f'd up...!

XStation3563d ago

@Sheikh Yerbouti

November

CJDUNCAN3562d ago

how can you make such an assumption that 360 owners were tired of their console and decided to jump ship to sony. 360 was the lead platform last year although the ps3 touted more power and in the end IMO had the better exclusives.

The PS4 was the cheapest of this gen consoles, also has more power, so that's more bang for your buck right out the box.

We can check sales numbers every month until the end of the generation, I highly doubt the Xbox One will ever catch the PS4 in sales, the gap is too significant.

But both consoles are pushing the pace beyond their predecessors so it's a win win for gaming itself.

Articles like this just creates more bragging rights for people that aren't even making money off of their consoles. What are you bragging for it's not like you're profiting off the sales. (Not you personally Sheikh, but in general)

Sheikh Yerbouti3560d ago (Edited 3560d ago )

I don't care personally, but it is a big turnaround that makes one take notice. Where did MS screw up?

To insinuate that they can catch up when they still fall behind after Titanfall and a price drop is delusional. Halo is the only option left, which is dubious with non-ports of COD and Destiny around at the same time.

when they unveil the xbox1 in the first E3 they make a deadly mistake in Don Matric ,they P.R. suck so much that it was dead on arrival they gamble big on Kinect and it failing so far I think if MS did make the XBOX 1 the same price wit the PS4 the competition would closer, but its still early in the console cycle ,but so far the PS4 is on top

assdan3563d ago

I thought it would make a bigger difference than it did. It slightly increased sale for a couple weeks and that's about it.

stripe8143563d ago

i guess sometimes its not a personal choice..coz we know some gamers are teenagers and under..parents who bought them xbox360 before will think their son/daughter would want a XB1 and give it as a gift..

3562d ago
I_AM_ CANADIAN_19893562d ago

Yeah it's a fact that MS cannot compete with Sony when it comes to a games console especially without a year head start. We Sony fans told you last gen that 360 only leaded against ps3 because of the year headstart for a reason. Ms lagging behind in sales isn't all that surprising because when it comes to gaming ms is minor league and Sony is major league.

kenshiro1003562d ago (Edited 3562d ago )

I find it funny that the usual suspects keep defending Microsoft for something they should have never introduced in the first place.

user74029313563d ago (Edited 3563d ago )

I have good reasons why.

1. Playstation has a powerful following of fans globally, they know there going to get the best of the best, word of mouth is powerful, and when multi platform games perform better on ps4 it gets out very fast. The internet provides unlimited options for casual/hardcore gamers to educate themselves on stats, and if more "casual" players do not get information about multi platform games performing better on the internet, then word of mouth will prevail.

2. Microsoft genuinely screwed up there entire launch in a manner that was publicly brought to the attention to not only hardcore gamers, but casual gamers as well. A lot of folks see first impressions as most important, and in fact they are.

3. Playstation holds more tradition and more popularity across the globe as a gaming brand. As generations grow larger and larger so does the influence of what console to choose from. Its the staple in console gaming.

4. The playstation 3 left a great impression on gamers with the amazing exclusives that were and (still are actually) being released. Gamers were incredibly surprised with "the last of us" launching even before the ps4! it left a great taste in the mouth of gamers who were ready to transition from wii/360/ps3 ext to buy a playstation 4.

thenickel3563d ago

Word of mouth is everything and right now Sony has much more positive wording than MS. Other than that everything comes down to games, pricing, opinion and loyalty. You think Sony is the greatest thing for gamers as I feel the same way about MS which in this case doesn't make either of us right or wrong. We need competition amongst companies not kiddie fighting amongst grown fools.

sovkhan3563d ago

@thenickel

But much more people believe Sony is best for gamers than The other way around hence the 2/1 ratio!!!

thenickel3563d ago

True and I agree (sovkhan) especially when you look at numbers but it's still far to early to pretend to know what people want now and 2 years from now. I'm sure many people feel the exact opposite of those people and in time we will know just how much. Also just because some people think Sony or even MS is better for gamers doesn't mean that its the truth. Strictly opinion nothing more!

hardcorehippiez3563d ago

And I’m not talking about Edo Tensei Madara.
