Sony’s H1Z1 Gets Details on Monetization and More: “If you Liked Dark Souls You’ll Like Our Game”

Sony Online Entertainment's H1Z1 has been unveiled yesterday and President John Smedley has been giving further details on what the game will entail.

Shouldn't it be the other way around?

F2P is a big turnoff though. They basically say they won't sell weapons and stuff but they have to make money somehow. If it's only wearables then I guess it's fine.

Who doesn't like Dark Souls? there can't be many and free to play can't be bad, if I like the game I won't mind spending some money supporting the dev on this game as a normal game would cost £60 anyway, the game (it certainly sounds intriguing) seems like a win for PS4 gamers to me.

F2P is fine if it is wearables or other cosmetic items. Games should never be pay to win. I can understand the need for them to get their money back but not at the expense of others being constantly behind or not being able to advance in the game.

I agree with you it's fine if it's not pay to win... but F2P usually is.

That said they seem to say it won't be pay to win.

Free to play just sounds like another way of saying microtransaction/pay-to-win model. Though, I hope this isn't the case because some of the concepts they were talking about in this game have me pretty excited.

Yea that does but They made Everquest Planetside and a couple others that were fee to play and not pay to win they have great track record I'm on board

Did you read the article people with his explanation it won't be a pay to win scenario. He is asking us the players to help decide what is going to be bought in game. I think this has a lot of potential and am looking forward to it. I will certainly try getting into the 20.00 beta for this in about a month. I also like the no leveling up or xp. I am looking forward to grinding and traversing this game to get my things. I cannot wait to kill my zombie self to get my loot back.

You really don't think they will "nickel and dime" players when they're ALREADY doing it by charging people just for early access?! It's F2P, why is there even a cost associated with it?

Zombies are popular. If you don't like zombie games, I guess you can just buy one of the (((MANY))) that don't feature zombies.

I say keep making zombie games until the perfect zombie game has been made, which hasn't happened yet. Once it does, and clones of that start showing up, then it'll be ok to start complaining about it.

Why do some people say f2p = pay to win? There are clearly f2p games that aren't pay to win. I guess it's just easier to go with a sweeping generalization.

In the F2P model there has to be a way for the developer/publisher to recoup the costs of actually developing/promoting the game.

MicroTransactions which offer only simple cosmetic changes will be purchased by only a small percentage of players, so the revenue isn't coming from there.
No, the real incentive to spend moneycomes from in-game items or services that give the player a clear advantage. More powerful armor/weapons or XP boosters do just that.
Or paying for access to in-game auction houses to sell your loot and thus take the proceeds to purchase more powerful gear is another way.

In either scenario, or in countless others...they ALL equal Pay to Win.

According to a recent story, only about 2.2% of players ever purchase anything in a f2p game, cosmetic or not. Not all f2p games are pay to win, so your last point isn't true.

Yes another zombie game and I can't wait, especially after just fishing the latest Walking Dead season on my DVR. Did you know that over 17million people tuned in to watch the season finale, so obviously the public loves zombiez😆
