PS4 Slim to be released in addition to the PlayStation Neo - report

Sony analysts mention a PS4 Slim in the pipeline, separate to the already-confirmed PlayStation Neo.

Cool, but the PS4 is already slim enough for my tastes

Nitrowolf22857d ago

Agreed

I can't imagine it being any more slimmer

If this rumor is true then I doubt Neo will come out this year. And that makes me think that Sony may indeed B changing some of the components on the neo to match Scorpio.

Filmicfps2857d ago

Mine runs quite loud. I wonder if a slimmer one would be even louder.

Omnislashver362857d ago

If they're doing this, they may be going for the 5.5 TFLOPS which would raise graphics as well as add 60 fps. Nice. I just hope they keep 1080i as an output as I hate 60 fps, and 1080i can cap it at 30fps.

_-EDMIX-_2857d ago

@film- my launch PlayStation 4 recently got a little loud and I actually found out if you open your PlayStation 4 you could clean out all the dust and it runs much quieter.

It's a pretty simple fix. People need to remember to maintain their consoles sorta are no different than you might maintain a PC

Errorist762857d ago

@filmic

The 1200 series us already much quieter. Only early models can get quite loud under heavy load.

Also clean out the dust. Helps a lot

Aenea2857d ago

@SpeakTruth

Ehhh, I'm sorry, but I actually do have a PS4 and it's really loud with certain games (oddly enough with most games it's in the menus, as if they let go of the framerate and it starts updating the screen way more than 60 times a second). So I don't actually see filmicfps' remark as proof that he doesn't have a PS4...

Nitrowolf22857d ago

My ps4 gets load to, despite me cleaning it. Depends on the game tbh. Uncharted 4 will push my fans for a couple of minutes everytime I start it, but go3s quieter, whereas Gundam Breakers is just a jet engine throughout my entire session

OB1Biker2857d ago

'doubt Neo will come out this year.'
According to the tweet:
'Sony analyst says "PlayStation 4 Slim," not just "Neo," due by Tokyo Game Show in Sept,'
Neo seems confirmed to be shown at TGS...too

LonDonE2857d ago

My launch Ps4 sounds like itsit's about to take off lol and my xbox one is whisper quite but my xbox one elite is louder but no where near the Ps4 level!

Any fanboy doubts me should look at my profile pic, NUFF SAID :)

XisThatKid2857d ago

I agree I love the way it looks in my bed room and living room areas plus it looks and feels like a solid system I don't need a slim but it would be welcomed for others to adopt a PS4

donthate2857d ago

PS4K/Neo at 5.5 Tflops is going to be loud, very loud. Even a PC with a RX480 at stock speed is super loud, imagine that in an APU with the CPU.

I think for PS4 Slim though, I don't think it will be much of a slim i.e. they just add UHD blu-ray and 4K support. The size will be pretty much the same.

Blazeit7132857d ago

Hopefully that's true but can they still keep the price point at 399?

bouzebbal2856d ago

Strange of true, ps4 slim isnt necessary, unless they can squeeze all that in a psone size. That would be mad!!!

HallowedSoul12856d ago (Edited 2856d ago )

Yeah first gen ps4s had crap thermal paste( hardened during testing ). So to get the ps4 to quiet down you have to reapply mx 4 thermal paste. Which is a pain but just something to know so nobody blames ps4s cooling design. Sony really should think about making a deal with artic cooling especially for the neo ( prob not getting to 1366mhz gpu oc without some mx 4 ) my pc randomly jumped to 60 degrees on idle with watercooling changed my 2 year old mx 4 with new paste now it's back to 30 degrees. Just goes to show bad thermal paste can change alot especially fan speed. @anyone that owns a ps4 and dust cleaning doesn't lower noise you prob have bad thermal paste not to mention even good thermal paste doesn't last more than 1 - 2 years without hardening and degrading heat transfer. It's well known fact that sony used horrible thermal paste.

That's what I was thinking. There's really no need for a PS4 Slim, because it's already SLIM. I can see Sony doing this to save money by putting in cheaper parts, but that's about it. Even with the XB1 S being released, the PS4 will still continue to outsell it overall because the XB1 is never going to be a big seller in Japan and most European countries. So, no major reason for a slim model. The key words in this article is "Sony analysts". This is coming from analyst with no real proof of anything. Sony has never mentioned a PS4 Slim coming out this year. They would release 3 pieces of hardware within months of each other. That would be crazy.

@The 10th Rider
Yeah, but not when you are releasing the PS4 Neo and PSVR at the same time. That's just suicide. M$ is releasing a XB1 S now, so it will replace the bulky original XBox One next year just before the Scorpio launches. I can see Sony releasing a PS4 Slim next year maybe, but not this year. Not like the PS4 is selling badly. Sony is probably making a nice profit from the original PS4 still.

The 10th Rider2857d ago

They would release a slim because tech has gotten to the point that they can redesign the console to make it more efficient and easier to produce. It's the same reason Microsoft is releasing the Xbox One S.

JackBNimble2857d ago

Well maybe the ps4 slim with also be updating to uhd blu-ray like the xbox s, if that's the case the I could see a Neo release sometime next year .

KwietStorm_BLM2857d ago (Edited 2857d ago )

There is always need for a "slim," as gaming consoles are one of few consumer tech devices that don't get regular refreshes, like phones, TVs, computers, etc. The wafers and all the silicon inside has shrunk significantly since these console released, as they always do, and the whole reason for a "slim" model isn't for gamers to have something new to look at. It's to cut manufacturing costs for the companies in question.

But before you proclaim things to be false or confirmed one way or another, 2 things to keep in mind.. Sony also didn't reveal the smaller PS3 until August at Gamescom, which released the same year. And there has also been no confirmation from Sony about the Neo's release, other than it being a thing. So, there isn't 3 pieces of hardware releasing within months of each other until they release.

atticus142856d ago

Slim versions aren't really for the consumer, it basically means Sony finally is able to make its product cheaper and more efficient. They may not be able to make it slimmer, but im sure they can, but for instance if they can reduce size, you can obviously fit more in a shipping container and probably pay slightly less for materials. When they are shipping out thousands of consoles for Christmas it would add up to a ton of money saved.

bleedsoe9mm2857d ago

about making it cheaper smaller is just a byproduct

daynnight3652857d ago

Yep, they can only fuq things up.
This isn't like last gen. The ps3 fat boy needed some work, but not the 4.
Unless they keep the look intact and just shrink it

JackBNimble2857d ago

Tech is constantly evolving , there is always room for improvement in pretty much eveything .

hells_supernova2857d ago

I agree it must be Wii sized! if it is smaller and runs cool and quiet I will not complain

Sunny_D2857d ago

Seriously, but is it possible we can ever achieve the level of slim that the PS2 did?

Mulando2857d ago

yes, but it could become more quite

otherZinc2857d ago

Will either new PS4 support HDR? Didn't hear any Sony executives mention that at E3.

UKmilitia2856d ago

only thing i dont like is usb on fron as my headset dongle sticks out, apart from that its perfection by design and size

IamTylerDurden12856d ago

The original PS4 is still smaller than the xboneS, and the xboneS got a die shrink. Can u imagine how small the PS4 will be with a die shrink? Sony really does outclass the other companies in terms of hardware manufacturing (consoles).

migh_and_highty2857d ago

PS4 as a launch console is very slim as it is, if sony can get it smaller then it's just sheer brilliance engineering from sony. Sony managed to create a slim console with an integrated 'power brick' which uses the same cables from the ps2 and ps3. I don't think any other hardware manufacturer comes close to their level of fine-expertise

sammarshall1022857d ago

With that slim console came a louder console with more heat

Angeljuice2857d ago (Edited 2857d ago )

Mine isn't audible for 90% of the time, after several hours of playing it makes a fairly quiet fan sound.

Is the XBox small for 90% of the time only to grow into a behemoth when its been on for several hours?

No, then PS4 is much less of an inconvenience, isn't it?

Good-Smurf2857d ago

PS2 Slim ran a lot quieter and cooler than original PS2.
Man if PS4 can get close to the size of PS2 Slim...

daynnight3652857d ago

You're ps4 is probly clogged with dust out the azz. Take a vacuum to it please

Agreed if they can make it smaller hats off to them. Sonys engineering team is top notch I've always liked their products.

KwietStorm_BLM2857d ago

The original engineering is where Sony showed their guns. A smaller model isn't brilliance, it's inevitable.

Tech52856d ago (Edited 2856d ago )

", if sony can get it smaller then it's just sheer brilliance engineering from AMD and Foxconn."

fixed with link and correct credit.

N4G has a huge love for sony however neither Sony or Microsoft factor in the chip sizes and overall hardware size, AMD and Foxconn are responsible for this. MS and Sony pick and purchase sub-licensed chips and configuration. naturally as tech improves motherboards will get smaller as a result. but anyways, crickets would be chirping at MS and Sony's next gen conferences if these companies went down under.

So think it's time everyone agrees that both Sony and Microsoft are doing the same thing by bring out a slim version and high end versions

Smart business move and great way to expand their market

For all the people who are disagreeing , you are basically disagreeing with fact. Both company's are bringing out a slim and high end machine it's obvious now so stop the bull shit trying to argue fact that one company is running the gaming industry and ending this generation while the other is a saint. Both are doing the same and if you can't see that that you have no idea what you are talking about.

It's fact

Dragonking0072857d ago

Well to be fair sony been doing it for years back on the ps2 era they launched 2 slimmed down ps2 aswell

Software_Lover2857d ago

You're young. They released slim versions of the original playstation also.

Sega also had slimline versions of the genesis.

Nitrowolf22857d ago

He's talking about releasing an upgraded version in addition to the slim though

Sweendog0072857d ago

I am not talking about a slim

Microsoft and Sony are both bringing out slim and high end versions

Both are doing the same , so I think it's fair to say that now rather than Sony are not doing it just Microsoft etc

Slims have been around for years.

Will be interesting to see what one sells better if both neo and slim are out at the time

Filmicfps2857d ago

Will people cry about the slim being sent to die because of Neo as well?

WeAreLegion2857d ago

Don't forget the revamped NES and SNES.

Sweendog0072857d ago

I know they did , not saying that

Microsoft and Sony are both brining out a smil version of ps4 and Xbox one , as well as high end machines.

Kribwalker2857d ago

Nintendo did that with the original NES in 1993

Maybe the old Neo specs were true from the dev kits, but now that Scorpio is announced, they are making an even MORE upgraded console. The slim will have the performance of the "weaker" Neo? To maintain console prices, it is still feasibly affordable to upgrade components as they become cheaper. Maybe the Neo was already in production. Scorpio just inspired a bigger change.

darx2857d ago

They are!? Where'd you hear this?

DragonPaw2857d ago

Sorry, I don't think you caught all the maybe's and a statement ending in a question mark, but bluntly I think this is a possibility that I came up with on my own.

KwietStorm_BLM2857d ago

Didn't know this was ever in question.

SynKakarrot2857d ago

Yes that was my thought since Microsoft announce the Xbox S but I read more negative talk on here about Microsoft killing the Xbox S cause Scorpio and that they where desperate and more....finally I se some positive talk about it

StormLegend2857d ago

Are they really gonna do the same as MS? Just release the Neo and leave it alone!!! No more consoles until 2020-2021

Fishy Fingers2857d ago (Edited 2857d ago )

Slim models are as much about saving on manufacturing (and associated) costs as anything else. It's just an added bonus that it can help drive some extra sales. It's a win win for Sony/MS.

Goldby2857d ago

Accidently pressed disagree.

IM SO SORRY!

On a side note. Its also because of theatre support.
