Halo 5 Sold Fewer Xbox Consoles Than Any Other Game in the Main Halo Series

The only reason I can think the PS4 didn't sell as well as expected is because the Limited Edition Black Ops III and Darth Vader Star Wars Battlefront PS4s were what consumers were holding out for.

It's probably because Microsoft had a big exclusive and Sony didn't. If Uncharted 4 hadn't been delayed until Spring we would have seen some very interesting results, but as it is Microsoft have been pumping out games and Sony's just relying on multiplats that people can play on Xbox anyways.

I mean look at your Battlefront example, people can play that on Xbox right now whereas those of us on PS4 are stuck waiting because Sony won't let us have EA Access. They keep handing the holiday season to Microsoft on a silver platter and it's stupid, I wish somebody at Sony would realize that Spring isn't the only time of the year to release games.

The Article does show a great reference point of Halo 3 (which released on Sept 25, 2007). Halo 3 helped move 550,000 Xbox360s for September 2007's NPD. Meanwhile Halo 5 (which released on Oct 27, 2015) helped move 305,000 Xbox Ones for October 2015's NPD.

This is concerning from an industry standpoint that both consoles sold so poorly when compared to historical sales.

Xbox one moved 303k with halo 5 in contrast to 550k with halo 3. Ps4 despite a price cut moved 275k (per gaf). Consoles should be selling north of 400k this month by now.

Arguments about Black Friday and bundles seem moot if you consider these are regular annual occurrences. I wonder if it's due to higher than normal sales earlier in the year gamers are tightening their belts.

You guys also have to remember, a lot of people have moved over from Xbox to PlayStation.

Also, similar to the PS4's poor sales performance, it could just well be that people are also waiting for the inevitable black friday bundurus.

The more crucial question is how Halo's MP numbers hold after release. I'm not entirely sure myself tbh now with all the competition in the form of your CODs, Destiny, Star Wars BF etc.

I think something that you guys are forgetting about console sales is that a lot of people simply don't have as much disposable income as they used to either. The purchase of a videogame console isn't as easy for some people as it used to be thanks to the economy being the way that it is.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was some relation between that and the popularity of streaming sites such as Twitch either, where there's probably some people who like to watch people play games simply because they can't afford to and that cash is desperately needed to manage rent/mortgage, food and bills.

I see where your coming from but I'm going to disagree. You have to remember that half of the 7th generation(Holiday 2005-Oct 2013) took place during the great recession(Recession starting in Oct 2008).

And while I agree that disposable income in 2015 isn't nearly as good as pre-great recession, its been getting better every year since its low point in 2009-2010. And Halo:Reach released in Sept 2010, yet it still moved more consoles in its release month than Halo 5

Sales of consoles typically go down around October due to the wait of blackfriday and generally most electrics.

As for XONE, I have no clue why Halo 5 sold the least in the series history as the series has had a history of selling around this time and has done fine, they only thing I can think of is the series is showing its age and maybe people are just growing tired of the IP.

I've said this from the very start, MS should have st started this gen marketing a new IP by Black Tusk (formerly known as) as it would have helped them with this offset. While having them work on a new IP, they could have 343 do a new IP but still have Halo 5.

How I saw it.

2 Halos, 2 of 343's new IP.

2 Gears, 2 of ...Coalitions new IP. This would have balanced out such a thing as I feel 4 main entries in 1 gen is a bit over kill. Let the series be missed for a bit.

I wonder what this means to them and the IP as I feel they should have started marketing a new IP years ago for XONE by 2 of those teams.

Except everything you are saying is incorrect.

1) Sony hasn't lost a SINGLE holiday season this gen. Last year they SLIGHTLY lost one region while MS just poured money into a fire pit in a desperate attempt to win.

2) The multi-plats perform better on PS4, and this holiday season the Multi-plats are blatantly better than the Exclusives from either camp. It would be a waste of money to not hold the mega exclusives for next year (and allow them more time to be perfect at launch).

3) The whole EA access thing is also not as cut and dry as you make it. It goes in direct competition to Sony's superior PS+ system, and so it just doesn't make sense for them to incorporate it when they know EA will buckle eventually and find a way to add it to PS+.

Halo 5 sold atleast 3 million opening week! If you assume all 300k sales were halo bundles that only gets you 150 million of the 400.

Even if you believe 1 million controllers were sold that gets you 70 million. I doubt they sold that many moreso with people buying elite controllers.

Anyway thats 220 out of 400 million. SO where did the other 180 come from? thats inline with 3 million stand alone games!!! 3.3 million or more sold.

Halo 5 made 400,000,000 on 1 but including bundles reqs and le controllers. 303,000 Xbox ones were sold for the month, less than half of this was probably halo bundles at best but lets count the entire 303,000 and throw in the le controllers as part of the revenue. $400x303,000= $121,200,000 only. this leaves $278,800,000 on the table how much of that you think came from req packs? If halo 5 sold 4 million copies it would make $240,000,000 to equal fallout and leave $38,000,000 on the table for reqs lol reqs ain't making that kind of money.

Do the math guys no matter how you slice it halo has done extremely well and made more that fallout on average per console. No big deal just saying, just imagine all the money left on the table if you do the 1 million copies sold like some are saying. It doesn't add up that how you now halo 5 sold well

I don't understand why people continue to try and do silly calculations like yours. That revenue figure is for all things Halo 5. Hardware(Accessories, Consoles, etc), Software(Micro transitions, DD, etc). You can't randomly just estimate the percentage share each section did.

Actually the 950k is anything but random it's as close as you get for what it did in NPD as from a leaked source. No all MS said was that Halo was "leading to it becoming the best-selling digital game ever in the Xbox Store for an opening week" and if you look at what every other publisher has said for DD sales it's always been less than 25% or so percentage so even if you made it 30% or more it's still shows a decline compared to past entries.

If you don't browse sales gaf too much that you would know the numbers are legit because Cosmic pretty much hinted at it being legit so did John(And we know they have access to NPD data) and if Nirolak hasn't banned him then he is as close to legit as we will get.

What? So you're saying due to the size of the game in GB's means it's the largest game this gen? It's the largest install maybe but the other stuff your coming out with is made up on the fly. The size of the file can be down to all sorts of factors which include texture streaming methods, sound quality streaming, quality and size of the FMV (remember a lot of games use the in game engine for cut scenes these days)
You really should do research before writing such stuff.
I very much doubt Halo 5 has the most content this gen and as far as I'm aware it was even missing certain modes at launch.

Black Friday hasn't stopped other consoles, including MS's own 360, from selling more than 303k in their own Octobers. That's without the release of their flagship titles too.

The 360 sold 366k in October 2007, granted, Halo 3 released a month prior, but sales for games are the highest on their release day and it progressively drops from there. That means that with the majority of the people who were going to buy Halo 3 that year already having it, the 360 still sold more than the XBO.

Yet it still barely got edged during a halo release in North America. I view that as doom and gloom for Microsoft in the future. My thought is that they're so damn close in specs / features and 90% of games are 3rd party, that players this generation have less incentive than ever to buy two consoles. Personally, I can only think of a handful of Xbox exclusives - crackdown, halo and Forza, that are known to the general public, outside of our own gamersphere here on N4G. (Tomb Raider is timed so I'm not counting that.)

Hell, I've always owned both consoles each gen, this is the first time where I'll be sticking with only one. And like I said, it's because they're so close to begin with, and because I have so much time, energy and money already sunk into my ps4, I will see 0 return on investment if I were to also buy an Xbox One.

I was a primarily a 360 gamer last gen, because of Sony's arrogance with the PS3, though I still did buy one a few years after debut. This gen I hopped back to Sony because I look at everything economically since I finished business school. I think black Friday has a lot to do with it. When Halo 3 came out black friday was not a event. Halo 4 came out when 360s were cheap. I think a lot of people seen all the crazy discounted bundles last year and are going to wait see if they can better deal this year.
Plus Halo is not as popular as it once was. When Halo 2 came out it was leagues above any other FPS at the time, so there was tons of hype for Halo 3. Nowdays they have a lot more competition in the FPS market. There is also a good amount of people that switched from Xbox To PS4 and can't afford to buy both. The real question for Halo 5 is will it outsell Black Ops 3 on Xbox One. I hope it does because imo Halo 5 is better.

Doesn't include the massive surge in digital sales. I preloaded digitally a week before launch. I would never sell a copy of Halo 5 so I always get my games digitally. In any case, regardless of what Halo actually sold and whether it was the lowest selling (I don't believe this) it was enough to propel the Xbox One past the price reduced PS4 with Uncharted even though it launched 4 days before the end of October. If anything I might be a little concerned with PS4 numbers, particularly in North America.

I've said it before and I'll say it again you cant compare Halo 3 numbers to Halo 5 numbers. We are living in a post COD world. Call of Duty is the number 1 shooter in existence that casuals drive to in droves. Whether it makes sense or not and that has had an effect on all other FPS games. When Halo 3 launched it was the first BIG FPS game to launch on the console and this was a little bit before Modern Warfare launched and changed the landscape. I can't tell you how many people i grew up with and knew who played Halo 1-3 religiously that made the jump to COD and never looked back. Of course that's going to eat into their numbers going forward. Most companies outside of EA wont even attempt to make multiplayer FPS games.

I'll always say it, Microsoft pulled a PS3 at launch (arrogance). They priced a less powerful console $100 more than their competition and made Kinect a mandatory inclusion to justify the price. If they HADN'T done that, I'd have an Xbox One in my living room right now instead of a PS4. And at the moment, with so few exclusives that interest me, I'll never buy an Xbox one. I just don't see the value in it after sinking so much time, money and energy into my PS4 this time around. It was a hard sell, switching from 360 to PS4, but I'm glad I did.

I hope Microsoft learns their lesson the next time around.

Halo 5 was a success in terms of sales, but only in terms of current gen Xbox software&hardware sales which are fairly poor. Microsoft is trying to change the narrative, make it look like there were huge sales and that's ok, any company would do that, but once you make a deep analysis you actually see that the whole Halo franchise is in decline.
None of this should stop you from enjoying the game, but it's good to cut through all the BS every once in a while.

Would you rather compare Halo 5's impact on hardware sales to past Halo installments that also released towards the end of the month in North America, because that just makes the situation even bleaker.

Halo: Reach helped sell 484k console units.

I didn't include Halo 2 or Halo 4 because they both released in the beginning of November, which is the month that usually gets a boost from Black Friday sales anyway.

As for Halo 3, the only reason I see Halo 5 being weaker in sales is PS4. Halo 3 released nine months after PS3. Well, you need to do some research yourself. A month prior to the release of Halo 3, MS dropped the price of the Xbox 360 for the first time since launch with the cheapest sku down to $280.

It is not just Halo 5 that is seeing his fan base reduced, COD, assassin Creed, Forza, GT6 some people are getting tired and "franchise" fatigue.
To put things in perspective PS4 with destiny last year in september was reported to have sold 300k destiny bundle by itself and PS4 had a total of 538K for the mont and MS was at 284 for the month.
So Destiny release month on Xbox One is doing about the same numbers as Halo 5 release month? Not a good sign for both MS and Halo.

Here we go another damn sony fanboy article on the XOne.Halo 5 is the biggest launch in the series making over $400 million in just 3 days with 2 million pre orders alone.The XOne outsold the PS4 in october XOne had the number 1 game. Which was Halo 5 that was only out for 5 days which is amazing.I take it this writer can't handle the truth.The game was only out for 5 days total before the month ended.So how about we wait till november and see how many console it sells?This writer may be the dumbest one yet on here

My guess is that the Xbox One is, at present, a console that doesn't really appeal to enough people who aren't the Xbox faithful. I have one and I like it, but I also gave it a chance. I know some avid 360 enthusiasts who went to PS4 with some going to Xbox One. On the other hand, I don't know anyone who was a PS3 enthusiast who is now an Xbox One fan.

Or...Maybe uninformed gamers think Bungie made it and wrote it off based on Destiny? Honestly I don't know, but it still boosted Xbox One numbers.

Isn't anything that releases before November fair game for Black Friday? If so, that could be people holding out.

It could be as simple as it released at the end of the month and we didn't see much sales spike in that short window. I'm sure not everyone bought one in advance of the game releasing. November will probably be a much better indication of demand.

PS Now is the PS 5 come 2020. It will come to PC, mobile devices, and smart tvs. Microsoft will follow suit with Xbox Live (is on PC) coming to mobile devices and smart tvs. The battle of hardware is over, the battle of software has begun

Halo is not what it was at its pinnacle under Bungie. It is still a good series and has many great fans who will support it but comparing it to games of years ago is silly. Halo 5 is a solid game and I am sure will sell a bit more especially this holiday season. Either way it made its money for MS and 343.
