October saw Xbox One at the top of console sales

IGN has reported that Xbox One has won NPD for October

According to a statement from Microsoft, the Xbox One saw 81 percent growth compared to October 2014. Staying on message, it said "the strength of the greatest games lineup in Xbox history," including October's top-selling game Halo 5: Guardians, helped drive "record Xbox Live" usage for the month, as well as put the console above its competitors.

Gazondaily3087d ago (Edited 3087d ago )

Don't ever underestimate the power of Halo.

Wasn't much competition in October to be fair.

The holiday season's games are strongly in favour of the Xbox One, although Sony's third party deals will let em secure victory in November and December.

Hey didn't the PS4 have a price drop?

Foehammer3087d ago (Edited 3087d ago )

That's what's called a SYSTEM SELLER

Even a price drop from the competition couldn't stop Halo 5

Gazondaily3087d ago (Edited 3087d ago )

Indeed. Proper system seller. Due to Halo, Xbox Won.

sammarshall1023087d ago

Yes, it shows that Halo is still a huge franchise unlike what some people were trying to claim

Good job Microsoft and 343

Back to some Halo 5 warzone :)

Letthewookiewin3087d ago (Edited 3087d ago )

Really? Halo sold 305k X1s and all of a sudden it's dominating. Congrats MS. You barely won on a Halo month. The tides sure are turning. I truly thought MS's console sales were going to explode. This is a win but.. Dam.

It shouldn't come at no surprise, it's Microsoft's flagship title after all. The question is, what other franchise can help xbox move as many consoles? Gears possibly?

TKCMuzzer3087d ago

er, system seller in the US maybe but it failed to outsell it's rival system in the other important region, the rest of the world.

You guys are looking at Uncharted's SECOND week. First week, it was number one. 540,000 units or something.

@skratchy
"You guys are looking at Uncharted's SECOND week. First week, it was number one. 540,000 units or something."

Not sure if serious. The NPD is for the entire accumulated total for an entire month. The fact that uncharted has 2 weeks to sell in October and came up selling less than Yoshi's Woolly World, a Wii U exclusive that came out on the same day as Uncharted HD, is not looking too good on Sony's part IMO.

AngelicIceDiamond3087d ago (Edited 3087d ago )

Congrats to MS.

@Chance There's no need to troll like that and show immaturity by bringin PS4 into this like that, just sayin its pretty immature.

But again Congrats to MS, X1 and Halo 5.

NewMonday3087d ago (Edited 3087d ago )

according to NeoGAF retail insiders the "win" is as small as 25k

just one week of PS4 sales in Japan alone are enough to wipe that out.

also Halo didn't manage 1 million, this much lower than even ODST, this is a massive %70 drop in franchise sales

Is it that hard to just be happy without resorting in fanboyish/trolling behavior, huh Dothnate and Lechance?

If it was a world wide win it could mean something but its NA only, common guys lets raise the level a bit higher here.

Anw congrats to MS, lets hope they bring the heat to Sony.

Unspoken3087d ago

Not counted in those "numbers" is the digital sales of the game that me and everyone else that I know and more bought the game purchased, as well, all of the bundles with digital halo in them, and yet it still finished as the number one game of the month in 4 days. Keep downplaying all you want, Halo is alive and well

Crimzon3086d ago

I hope this inspires Sony to actually release games during the holiday season from now on. It sucks to have nothing to play at this time of year because Sony only wants to give us games in Spring. It's stupid and Microsoft have proven that hey, actually putting out some big exclusive games during the holiday season works and a lot of people buy them.

Stop holding back the games Sony. I think all of us who bought your console and supported you deserve to have some actual games to play. The whole reason I switched from 360 to PS3 last gen was because PS3 actually got games while the 360 relied on multiplats, and it's sad to see the roles reversed this time.

Gazondaily3086d ago

@New

"according to NeoGAF retail insiders the "win" is as small as 25k

Lol wtf kinda logic is that? We're talking US sales and you're bringing in Japan??

Yes the margin is small but the PS4 sold less you know that right? And with a price drop that people on here thought would decimate the competition. I'm looking at older threads now and the comments are absolutely hilarious but I'll be classy and avoid posting links for now ;)

Anyway, I'm just glad there's at least some competition in one territory. It's good for the industry as the US is a key battleground (even though its not all great as MS are struggling to get a win in what was their own home territory at one point).

But yes, I don't expect Xbox to win any of the other months. But dat Halo affect...

I think a lot of you guys are forgetting that halo 5 only came out 27th October , that's 3 days 0_o and it had such a great effect. Look forward to seeing November results. Not that sales makes much difference to how awesome Halo is

NewMonday3086d ago

@Kribwalker

digital is nothing new, mostly 20%of sales, even with that franchise decline is over 50%

@Septic
for Sony and MS the fight is for market share, October didn't move the needle, the PS4 price drop is what made the sales margin for X1 so small and negligible. North America is supposed to be the market where MS make up the sales gap and it's clear now that is not happening, it's over and settled now.

and remember this comment you made? "Also, take it from me, as an actual Halo fan, people will jump on this bandwagon", 70% fall in franchise sales in the XB home market proves you wrong.

"Some dude on NEOGAF told me its like blablabla"

So Halo 5 Sold 1 Million and made 400 MILLION revenue? Wow that has to be one hell of a price for a game.

Also to compare that with the "real life":

13 People in my Friends List got COD BO3
12 People got Fallout 4
42 People got Halo 5

JMyers3086d ago

@Tobsesan

You do know that the $400 million in revenue included bundles, merch and micro transactions yes? That it is not individual game sales at retail? The bundle alone was $400.

Gazondaily3086d ago

@NewMonday

Regurgitate NeoGaf rhetoric all you want but the fact is, Halo 5 allowed the Xbox One to beat the PS4 despite the latter console's price cut which many proclaimed would cause Sony to dominate in sales.

Yes Halo's sales as a whole have declined after over a decade of phenomenal sales and increased competition but all those who so utterly and desperately tried and continue to downplay its importance or quality should be quiet and recognise its continued importance and the impact it made. For some semblance of humility.

At the end of the day, its only one month and Sony will be back to dominating the charts again after this but credit should be given where its due; not mindlessly following a rhetoric to fulfill a tired agenda.

NewMonday3086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

@Septic

"NeoGaf rhetoric"? lol

dude they are numbers, it's math

last year X1 outsold PS4 in NA by about 1 million in the holidays, MS need to repeat that every year, they clearly loaded their bases for this big season and stayed without exclusives the rest of the year hoping to bank it now, but it's not working out. all Sony need to do is keep the margin as small as possible and their plan is working perfectly.

MS needs that big margin but it's not getting it, this will have big ramifications on the XBox division.

"Yes Halo's sales as a whole have declined after over a decade"

nop! Halo sales decline after Bungie left and the bulk of Halo fans don't have faith in 343, over protective fans proved detrimental to the franchise, repeatedly excusing the shortcomings, congrats! the 70% fall in Halo gamers is partly their responsibility.

CoD sales declined but it was just 5-10% over 2 years, not a big massive 70% like Halo, and CoD did manage to rise again in sales this year, truth is gamers find things seriously wrong with the Halo franchise.

andibandit3086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

I dont know where you got 20% from, one might fear you've taken it from this article from 2009:

Also regarding CoD, please look at these number:

Please tell me where you're seeing a 5-10% decrease.

Gazondaily3086d ago

@NewMonday

"nop! Halo sales decline after Bungie left and the bulk of Halo fans don't have faith in 343,"

Yet, Halo 4 surpassed Halo 3's sales and became the top selling MS game of all time for them?

"over protective fans proved detrimental to the franchise, repeatedly excusing the shortcomings"

No, its REAL fans who proposed changes. Who made 343 change their approach to the MP after Halo 4?

You for instance, are so fascinated by Halo 5's shortcomings in the SP area (and imo are completely disingenuous- not for one moment do I take your stance on it seriously, sorry) but its us die-hard fans who are the biggest critics of the game.

Halo 5 is a love letter to many Halo fans but with a campaign that falls short.

But Halo 5 is heralded by MANY as the best MP component since Halo 2 or even ever. That's a massive feat which a proper objective fan would recognise.

" truth is gamers find things seriously wrong with the Halo franchise."

Gamers find something so wrong with it that they single handedly helped propel the Xbox to victory over the price-dropped PS4?

The truth is, Halo FANS know Halo and whilst it may not be as relevant as it was back in the day thanks to the likes of Call of Duty, it still represents one of the best exclusive FPS' out there that remains largely untouched, after two gaming generations.

Halo will ALWAYS be a bittern thorn on the side of haters and that's understandable- this NPD is proof and an example of one way it does that. Heck, the comment section here is a microcosm of that.

WelkinCole3086d ago

@Septic.

Why are you guys trying so hard to make a big deal out of Halo 5 sales?.

Its not that big a deal but obviously some haters are hurting tis all.

Kribwalker3086d ago

Newmonday downplaying the digital age again and once again reporting "numbers" from a "source". How many of these copies are in the bundles? Because the $400 million made by MS in the week of halo launch, if it was only console bundles that they sold and nothing else would be 888,000. Now, think about that. Let's get a more realistic number and say 150,000 consoles. That would be $67.5 million. Which would leave about 4.75 million copies of the game @ $70 each. Which we know didn't happen.
Now count in req packs, that most of them can be bought by in game currency so say 2 million req packs were bought at like $10 each (which would be a very generous number) that would only drop the game sales total by 285,000 and leave us at 4.5million copies sold.
And still, we know it did not sell 4.5 million copies plus 150,000 custom consoles. So if they sold 2 million copies of the game digital and physical, and $20million in req packs(which is very generous) they would have sold 577,000 custom consoles, leaving an unaccounted 577,000 copies of the game plus the regular digital copies of the game that are also unaccounted for.
No matter what, unless people spent $100 million on req packs in the first week and bought 300,000 consoles, that would leave a measily 2.357 million copies of the game physical and digital.
No matter how you slice it New Monday, these "numbers" you keep reporting do not add up. $400 million in halo consoles req packs and copies of the game push it well over a million units so stop posting that crap from a unverified source

Tobsesan3086d ago

@NewMonday

Just do the Math...

They sold 303k Consoles in October
Even if EVERY console would have been the Limited one it would look like this:

303kx400$= 121,2 million So what happend to the rest? Oh ye lemme guess all is merchandise right?

Just assume the half of what is left is game sales:
400m-121,2m/2 = 139,4m/60$= 2,32 Million Games sold in the first week. The other 139,4 million cash goes to limited edition controller and games (which is way too high).

Major_Glitch3086d ago

NewMonday3086d ago

@Kribwalker & @Tobsesan

or MS could just give out the numbers

retail sources say less than 1 million Halo5 sold including bundles, you trying hard with magic math to pump it up over 2 million proves it's a shockingly very low number and that the Halo franchise is severely damaged.

@Septic

"I love numbers? Do you even understand the point I was making? We are repeatedly told that NPD= the world. But now Japanese performance comes into it?"

first thing first those who only care about NPD only are the Xbox guys, everybody knows that, kind of audacious that you try to spin that around.

second NPD is regional market report, it is insignificant without factoring in total worldwide market share, market share is the biggest foundation for console platform successes.

so it is actually more informative to talk about how NPD relates to the worldwide console market shape than randomly posting a "yay! win" that totally misses the point of NPD reports.

those who pay for NPD data are not looking for "win" or top 10 placement, they are looking for sales trends and unit volume.

I thought gamers were saying that Halo 5 didn't sell that well. It was only out in October for 5 days though. The PS4 price cut started before that. I wonder how many Halo 5 bundles were sold? I wonder how many will be sold in Nov? Didn't Amazon have the PS4 ahead of the XBox One for most of October? I wonder how well those Tomb Raider bundles will sell in November. And if M$ releases the numbers...then what?

@Clarence
Oh ya, your right they must be hiding something...

It's not like they made $400 million at the launch of Halo 5. Right ? Oh wait...

And seeing as your saying it didn't sell as much as previous Halo's...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

"Halo 4 grossed US$220 million on its launch day and $300 million in its opening week. The gross was a new record for the franchise,[173] surpassing Halo: Reach‍ 's $200 million first-day gross."

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

"This afternoon Microsoft said Halo 5 was the fastest-selling Xbox One exclusive game to-date, with more than $400m in global sales of Halo 5 games and hardware a week after launch."

So it made a $100m than both Reach and Halo 4 (both of which had much bigger install bases) in there opening week. So either way it's bringing in a lot of income for MS.

I don't think anyone is surprised about Xbox One taking October in North America.

...but I'm also not surprised to see Microsoft having something to say when they've taken a month.

Business as usual. Just keep the games coming all around.

3087d ago
DarXyde3086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

User1049,

Your comprehension of my statement leaves a bit to be desired.

At what point do I "complain"? I completely expected Microsoft to sell the most units for October. I'm not upset about that at all. Microsoft is known for doing well in North America during this time of year. I also mentioned Microsoft having something to say because, the vast majority of the time since this generation started, Microsoft has been very quiet. That's not complaining. It's making an honest observation and I'm sorry you don't get that. If you want me to play this game, then fine... They even mentioned sales are up 81% over last year. They're talking sales subtly. Didn't they mention less than a month ago that they would no longer be focusing on sales and will be looking at Xbox live memberships?

It's a very pronounced shift in talking points in recent months. Simple as that.

3086d ago
DarXyde3086d ago

My point was that, going into the holiday season, they are certainly more vocal than they are any other time of the year which is also when Xbox One actually bests the competition in North America.

When I said I'm just making an observation, I meant particularly that: I'm making an observation.

No, I'm not surprised to see Microsoft come out ahead and no, I'm not surprised Microsoft releasing a statement regarding sales, however subtle it might come across. Regardless, all it means is Sony can still improve their footing in the US and Microsoft will want to maintain their newly found momentum. It's only going to propagate and create incentive for the platform holders to get serious. Once more, business as usual.

Now about this...

"Where do you see them doing anything other than the above mentioned things, in their statement?"

It's pretty obvious that Microsoft's statement placed greater emphasis on the fact that they're up 81% YOY and it's thanks to 'the greatest lineup in Xbox history'. The part of their statement regarding Xbox Live engagement very obviously took a backseat to the fact that they're up since last year.

How would I know this? They gave specific numbers for sales and limited their online engagement to the statement "record Xbox Live [usage]". You tell me which one they obviously want to emphasize: (a) "Xbox One saw 81 percent growth compared to October 2014" OR (b) Halo 5: Guardians, helped drive "record Xbox Live" usage for the month, as well as put the console above its competitors"

One is a quantitative statistic. The other is a fairly ambiguous statement that doesn't address the magnitude of improvement.

It's pretty obvious what they're treating as the primary metric. Again though, it really doesn't matter' I'm just trying to make sure I'm clear here. It's an observation and we can leave it at that.

Death3086d ago

@DarX,

I was under the impression Sony and Microsoft release a statement every month when the numbers are released. Maybe I haven't been paying close enough attention, but I thought that was a standard business practice.

This is August of last year, http://www.craveonline.com/...
"As usual, Sony and Microsoft responded with statements about hardware."

DarXyde3086d ago

Death,

That's the general and expected trend, but overall, they've been pretty quiet since, say, this year began. As the sales gap grew globally, Microsoft hasn't been very forthcoming. They did phenomenally last winter and we heard a lot from them. Following that when sales returned to the more expected trends, we don't really hear much at all from them regarding sales. We often hear from them when they have strong sales or something to spin. For example, they mentioned that, although PS4 outsold Xbox One in June, Xbox One was the most bought console during the E3 period. In the article you linked, they're talking about sales doubling (a plus for Microsoft), but in a very truncated window so it's highly conditional there where they were looking at the last week of the month following Madden's launch.

You're right in that, usually, we get the statements regarding sales at the end of the months. In Microsoft's case, it's a bit finicky and selective. Not saying they're lying, but it's a bit of an unusual way to portray relative success. We don't really hear from them regarding sales much anymore unless there's some significant occurrence. In this case, Halo 5 launched and they beat last year's record, made more significant by the fact that they have a great offering this holiday. This is a great time to talk about sales, but it's also their primary metric here when they mentioned, going forward, it wouldn't be--that the primary focus would be on Xbox Live membership. It was treated as more of a passing breath here.

Microsoft will definitely talk up sales when they can. This is one such occasion where I believe it's not bad to do so. It's when it involves distorting things that I find a little underhanded, particularly toward investors.

Again though, I can't say I'm surprised they took the opportunity to do so. I don't even blame them. I just think they changed their tone.

Lol you people are something else xD why just why? Is it that serious to you? Sales aren't a big deal, just refreshing to see halo alive and well and ms has my congrats just like sony, if that's flip flopping than guilty as charged

If you guys haven't picked up a ps4 or Xbox one this holiday is the time to do it.

GamingIVfun3086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

My post above yours was marked as trolling when I said basically the same thing you said and other bellow has said.

Would like to know what part was trolling.

I agree with every one who has pointed out the small win that Microsoft had in October and have given their thoughts on it.

As for Halo 5 I bought and gave my opinion. That's not trolling.

Seems more like censorship.

nowitzki20043086d ago

Congrats to MS.

Funny to see people bragging now, but when PS4 wins 10 or 11 months of the year then those months dont matter smh.

Halo 5: Guardians sold 935k physical units including bundles...

Spid3r63086d ago

NeoGaff is your God so we do have problems with that!

UKmilitia3086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

thought MS wasnt counting sales?

but it only outsold by about 30k for what many would say is MS biggest game???

on another front one of those sales is mine as i bought one end of last month.

strike1013086d ago

How many units did Xbox and PS4 sold last month ?

FernDiggidy3086d ago

Why is this website so anti Xbox...any shred of good news from the xbox just yields hate? How come? Both consoles are great in their own right.

Congrats 343i!!!

ARESWARLORD3086d ago

a good comment because it's insanely true

thricetold3086d ago

Where were you last gen when it was the exact opposite? Not only that ms fans were even worse. This is the bed they made and it's only going to get worse as sony starts releasing their heavy hitters and ms starts to run out of steam like the last two gens have proven they do. Just wait for it.

saywat2473086d ago

lmfao the fact these xbone fanboys ruled my original comment as trolling shows they don't want to accept their losses and move on

_-EDMIX-_3086d ago

Agreed at TKC- More PS4's still sold world wide.

Kept telling people that Halo 5 likely wasn't going to be enough to stop PS4 sales. As....no Halo has ever won MS any gen...ever.

yet "system seller"? lol, sure. It moved 300k, the worst Halo to release in terms of sales in history. Can't spin facts buds, its depressing to see many try to.

Dark times for XONE fans I guess, Halo series just showing its age and COD is taking it over as it has been for the last couple years.

Congrats to Microsoft on the October win!

MasterCornholio3087d ago

Yep same thing here.

Congrats Microsoft.

killer_goat3087d ago

I'm really not sure on why people are disagreeing with you.

PudgeyBurrito3086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

It's because it doesn't fit in to there narrative or they don't know that NPD statistics are only North American which they can google quick to find out.

They want to believe that it outsold world wide but those numbers are not out yet. But if you read any article on this site right now they will skip the North American part to make you believe they outsold PS4 world wide. Facts don't bod well here unfortunately.

Ult iMate3086d ago

According to GAF it's
ps4 - 297
xbone - 168
worldwide in october.

bf0007779663087d ago

although they should give up all hope to out-sell the PS4 globally but wining the NA along in October is very impressive.

killer_goat3087d ago

But ms didn't outsell Sony in total in America. Just for one month. There is still quite a gap in sale's there. Honestly not surprised with halo. Didn't really enjoy it myself. The rest of the year will be interesting. But I reckon Sony will take it. What else has ms got? Honest question.

While, the Xbox one halo 5 boost was pretty good for such a short time, again congratulations to Microsoft's win in the US for NPD, there are key indexing points that are showing retail sales in the US are not as strong today as they were last year in the US and retail, running door buster's special sales are being done over more along the entire Holliday season instead of just the few concentrated days.

The news this morning was even black Friday sales are not going to be as important as is the entire fall season due to consumer spending being spread out, so as retail shops are having more cost cutting % sales throughout the holidays.

And with black Friday both Xbox one and ps4 both being @$300.00 many may be waiting to hold off or purchase later in holiday buying instead of all front loading sales.

Nov & Dec and even Jan will be more along the signs of sales spread out over than just relying only on just a few days of each month.

81% more than last year wow Halo really is a system seller ! Nice win and with all the deals going on in Nov with free games galore Xbox should win again.

Minato-Namikaze3087d ago

The xbox sold really bad last year in October. Partly because MS cut its legs from under it to push sales into November.
