Tearaway Unfolded Review | IGN

IGN:

Tearaway makes the leap from Vita to PlayStation 4, and there are considerable changes. This isn't just another remastering.

That a strange reviews, it basically faults the PS4 version for changing too much from the Vita version.

Developer's can't win. Get a lower score review for a direct port with just a resolution bump. But now getting a lower score because they added content.

Grap3167d ago

actually one of the pros is Use of DualShock 4

nix3167d ago

Damn.. This is coming out already????

I recently bought Everybody's Gone To The Rapture. Am 1/3rd done. I bought MGSV last night.. I was planning to buy Until Dawn.. And now this?

kfk3167d ago

@nix: Yeah, three more well-reviewed exclusives in less than a month, but I thought PS4 has no games this fall? I guess August and September don't count as fall anymore.

DarXyde3167d ago (Edited 3167d ago )

@kfk,

Don't do that, mate. That's perpetuating problems. No one is starving for titles this fall, exclusive or otherwise.

pinkcrocodile753167d ago (Edited 3167d ago )

Sorry boys and girls but this one is a miss for me. Maybe if I was 4 years old, then yes, but for me it's a world of no!.

I've just watched the Playstation Access video on youtube...

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Drawing Moustaches... Really! Even if it is a small indie title. Just NO on every level!

CrowbaitBob3167d ago

@kfk

I'm not really gonna debate the console vs. console release nonsense, but I've gotta say in 36 years on this planet I've never once heard anyone refer to August as part of the Fall season.

I'd love to see a review from someone who hasn't played the original.

Amd the reviews for games like these always vary wildly.

vikingland13167d ago

@joab777

Scroll to the bottom of this page and you will see reviews that are higher scored. This review will not stop me from getting this unique game.

Lore3167d ago

This review is irrelevant as IGN is now "garbage." I'd get your gaming opinions elsewhere. Their point scores don't directly reflect their opinions of the games themselves.

pinkcrocodile753167d ago

@Lore... Hold on there Fella / Missus, did you just suggest that users get their opinions from another a third party.

I was under the impression that we looked at a cross section of news, did our own research and came to a conclusion on our own.

As for this game, yes it's aimed at 4 year olds but it's going to be great for children... it's just not for me.

LAWSON723167d ago (Edited 3167d ago )

They added content the reviewer thought was repetitive, and he states the charm factor just is not as great as the vita version.

Also adding content is not always a bonus. A direct port is much better than a direct port with more features that don't do anything or even take away from the original experience. As the reviewer said it had bad pacing.

There is for a lot of people a different mindset when playing a new game on a PS4 and a Vita.

You are confused because you probably clicked a review you believe should of scored much higher and found no valid reason for their score after trying to. A good reviewer plays a game and thinks up a score not grades it like a test. They don't come to conclusions like more content+tearaway on ps4= obviously better game than og, they play it and see what they think when they finish

Spotie3167d ago

Stop it. Just... stop.

jholden32493167d ago (Edited 3167d ago )

Your comment makes perfect sense and the fact that almost everyone here unanimously disagrees with you just shows how most people here allow their unnatural adoration of Playstation to cloud any shred of rational judgment.

Yes you are exactly right. More content does NOT equal better. In no way, in no world. From what I've read from multiple reviews the common running theme is that the game has horrible pacing and no cohesive progression. Also, the lack of a PS4 camera for many gamers removes one of the game's more charming features- like your face in the sun.

I have the game on Vita. It's a great game. But clearly, this reimagined port isn't as great. Better stick with the original if you have a choice.

ChronoJoe3167d ago

While his comment makes sense, people disagree with his opinion, I'm not sure why that's hard to grasp.

I haven't played it yet, so I'll reserve my own judgement, but critics seem to unanimously disagree with this review, which sits as an outlier on an otherwise tremendously well received adaptation.

Personally I did not understand this IGN reviewers argument. He suggests that the additional segments adversely affect the games pacing and narrative. From what I recall playing this game on Vita, beyond its begging and end, the game did not have that much of a narrative. Little more so than a Super Mario game. So it's not easy to understand why more content indeed would negatively impact the experience.

As far as Lawson72's argument that more content + same game doesn't necessarily = better game, goes. It really depends on the game and the quality of the content added. I could see how more content could adversely affect a very well paced, narrative experience like The Last of Us, but it would be harder to understand how more content (i.e. extra levels) would adversely effect more gameplay focus games like Super Mario, or the one in question here, Tearaway.

r2oB3167d ago

After reading the review, I found it odd that they docked the game 20%. His main gripe was the additional content. And he even admitted the content was fun, so it's not like it was a complete negative. Why dock the game 20% though, I can't imagine it being that much of a problem.

I bet if there was no additional content the game it would have been docked for being a handheld game with no additional content to justify the console price and release. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

OB1Biker3167d ago

Yea I think Im not the only one to think IGN reviews are irrelevant these days. The thing that worries me is how th the top comment was flagged 'Off topic???' for just stating 'IGN'?
This site is great in that it allows gamers to express themselves independently from the sites posting those reviews. Now its getting more and more difficult to do just that because of an unbalanced bubble system.

GNCFLYER3167d ago

I quit clicking on anything IGN or gaming bolt a couple years ago because they either hated playstation or was on someone's payroll.

Are they still like that?

And I loved tear away on my vita...

I would have rated it a 9, fantastic, different kind of game.

PhucSeeker3167d ago (Edited 3167d ago )

Actually, the review said that one of the disappointing things was that the game stick too much to its original narrative hence some fill-in fights that can get repetitive fast.

You should read the review before judging it.

miyamoto3167d ago (Edited 3167d ago )

The score just does not justify the content of the review. This is from the same guy who gave the Vita version a 9.3. So much deduction with the improvements not making up for the cons.
Really? For a developer who pushes the DualShock 4 functions to the limits you give a 7.6? Now that is very cold hearted.

Now you guys know why Greg and Collin left IGN.They just can't stomach what's going on inside it.I wonder when their contract is gonna expire. Expect more scores like this in the future for PS4 games.

Majority of the reviewers give this game a 9 or 10. IGN wants to be isolated.....so be it.

Also beware of reviwers who despise kid friendly games in favor of violent games.

garrettbobbyferguson3167d ago

"They cannot stomach what's going on inside it"

Because of a 7.6 score? How bad do you think a 7.6 score is?

GenuineGamer3167d ago

7.6 is a VERY GOOD score i dont get why everyone is up in arms about it. Does this game deserve to stand up high with mgs5 uncharted and halo up in the nines? NO...

7.6 for a game like this is more than fair and means its a good game. not every game deserves to be a 10 just because you like it or its on your fav system and your looking for fanboy points or whatever.

Eonjay3167d ago (Edited 3167d ago )

I wouldn't take IGN too seriously. I mean with so many other reviews giving it a high score and praising it... this review really seems like and outlier. How they got from a 9.3 on vita to a 7.6 on PS4 is the real question.

gokuking3167d ago

I'm sure you'd agree that a PS4 game can be worse on Vita, so why is it a surprise that a Vita game can be worse on PS4? I've played the original Tearaway and a demo of Unfolded. While the original Vita release left me charmed it couldn't help but feel cold with the PS4 port. Because of the difference in controls the interactivity was significantly worse and I couldn't help but shake how unfitting a cynical hackjob port was for a game as uncyncial as Tearaway.

Xbonewone320153167d ago

But you would take n4g or neogaf seriously?

"Ok"

JMyers3167d ago

@ gokuking

Yes a PS4 game can be worse than a Vita version, but not when the implementation and use of the PS4's features is being praised.

The negatives were pacing and repetition. Shouldnt this be the same then for the original game?

gokuking3167d ago

@JMyers Not when the port makes changes and additions to the original game. The story isn't a 1:1 rendition of the Vita release. It's also important to remember the difference in experiences on a handheld vs. a home console. One might find a RPG on a TV screen a poorly paced slog due to the grinding required to get far, but be okay with the same game on a handheld because of its pick up and play nature.

This review is a joke, it's funny how the lowest review gets the most attention on N4G.

Tearaway Unfolded is a Day1 buy for me, September 8th. Crafted edition.

If u own a PS4 u would be foolish not to buy.

Ps: It's a joke Septic. Haven't you read ign's pokemon review where one of the negatives was "Too much water"? No need to be in defense mode all the time. :)

Dee_913167d ago (Edited 3167d ago )

" Atoi sets unrealistic body proportions for girls"

-Polygon

"lacks some of the original's intimate charm"

-IGN

"lacks some of the original's intimate charm" was the only negative brought up.. yet it gets a mediocre score compared to its original.. The game got an mediocre score, because it's not a complete identical to the original.
LOL

Germany73167d ago

Septic is hilarious trying to be impartial on every article about Sony.
Now try to say something not positive about Halo and see how he will react. Classic Septic. xD

I'm going to enjoy this game. The Vita version is amazing, and it has more content on PS4. I can't wait. Also, i don't really like ign, gamespot and polygon. Because they pissed me off.
