I am laughing but not at the NX. I am laughing at the ridiculous conjecture formed by the headline of this story. It isn't about the hardware. It is about the management of said hardware. Nintendo actually had a wonderful opportunity with the Wii U. And they failed to capitalize on it.

This incident wasn't a one off.

Although they sold more consoles with the Wii, that was due to the new gamer/granny crowd and they actually missed with that chance as well. It is their outdated tightfisted unevolving management properties. They will certainly sell to those persons that are already Nintendo fans. But if they continue on the same path that is the only crowd they will garner. They may snag a few here and there who are curious but that will be all. So no, the NX isn't a PS4 competitor.

The Wii U was without question the weakest of the next-gen consoles. And there's no way to make a $150 NX and have it be more powerful than the XBO and PS4, the only way it can claim most powerful hardware at $150 is if it's a handheld first and foremost.

And as far as the rumors of NX being less powerful than PS4, GOOD. Nintendo doesn't need a $400 console to sell when the PS4 and XBO will have been on the market for 3 years by the time it launches and drop down to $300 along with 3 years worth of games, and install bases hovering around 50m / 30m, with NX having 0. Aiming for XBO performance is a much easier task, and can be done at a much lower price for consumers at $250.

Nintendo needs to be worrying about increasing the fanbase they're selling first and foremost instead of worrying about MS and Sony. At a reasonable price ($250), and with a first party line-up fans have been asking for for several generations now (Pokemon MMO, Pokemon Snap 2, Metroid, New IP), free online, and improvements to other areas of the console Nintendo can get out of these unfortunately consistent 30m or less selling consoles (from N64 - Wii U, excluding Wii), and get a much better 50m - 60m consistent user base going.

As for the NX, it hasn't even been officially revealed or has a release date. So, how can it be competition for the PS4 as well as the X1?

For arguments sake, let's say the NX releases next fall (Oct/Nov 2016) by that time where will the PS4 be in consoles sold 50 or 60mil? The X1 should be around 35, 40mil? How would the NX even be competition cause that would be a substanial lead your competitors have (console wise) and you've only just come out.

Wii sold well thanks to the casual market. When the mobile market took off and Move/Kinect released, Wii sales took a nosedive. It can't be used as proof of anything besides Nintendo having a lightning in a bottle moment.

PS4 and X1 will have a substantial lead by the time NX arrives. Its absurd to think that NX will pose any real threat when it'd be competing with consoles that have 30+ million userbase.

The thing about if Nintendo had 3rd party it'd dominate thinking is flawed. GCN had some third party support and even with plenty of 1st party exclusives it still sold less than newcomer Xbox.

Of course there's a chance. If it's a successful console and bearing in mind I'm using the word If. If it's successful people who don't currently have the Xbox One or ps4 may choose the nx therefore reducing the sales of the ps4. That is, no matter how you spin it going to have a negative impact on sales. Let's say there are (for arguments sakes) 200 million potential gamers out there. 2 way split for ps4 X1 would be 100 million each over 10 years, with another competitor that's a 3 way split therefore less sales all around, ergo, a threat to sales.

UHHHH...Nintendo already has an innovative, family friendly platform. 2, in fact. The thing is, the Wii did so we'll because it was a cheap, casual (overall) platform that anyone could play. The Wii U isn't doing so well because (a) people probably think it's an add-on or (b) the same casual market that owns a Wii sees no need to buy another gaming platform. It's no different from your parents asking why you need a PlayStation 2 when you already had a Nintendo 64 when you were younger. People likely don't see the difference here.

Regardless, Nintendo's NX is completely up in the air. I doubt it'll be weak though. It's supposed to be able to run Unreal 4. Guess we'll see.

They're better off with a Nintendo 64 approach: powerful, many exclusives, great number of must have titles.

The NX will be nothing more than a console for Nintendo first party game that was already been established since the N64....aka, the most powerful console at that generation.

People failed to realize that having a great first party lineup and comparable spec is not enough anymore in this day and age. A robust online and rich media feature is essential to modern day consoles and I don't forsee Nintendo ever having those parts upgraded to modern standards like Live and PSN but most likely are just minor upgrade to what we are seeing from them from their past 2 consoles regardless of how powerful the hardware is.

I am sure we will see more third party support but that is the best we can hope for at this point unless something really shocking happens with the NX, but don't hold your breath on it.

Well Nintendo is ready for online service. They have stated that already they have a new thing coming. As far as hardware goes its already been hit with a rumor that its definitely not trying to compete on PS4's level. Although things have changed since then. Nintendo's lead hardware guy stepped down and Iwata has recently passed. It could lead to a change in NX's development or a delay. Depends on how the company's new leader looks at it.

Nintendo has already mentioned they are closing their Club Nintendo program down in September in favor of a new online membership service for all Nintendo devices in the future. Starting around September/October I believe. NX likely will be first console to sport it fully.

Perhaps I should've been more specific as to what I meant. Look, I don't think it has any chance of outselling the PS4 or Xbox One or anything when it's 3 years late to the market. It's unrealistic to think something like that is going to happen but if what I'm saying comes to pass then it definitely will eat away at a chunk of Xbox One and PS4 sales. Don't forget that a lot of Nintendo fans have migrated over to the PS4 or Xbox One to play multiplats and if the NX is getting all these multiplats and it also has the superior version of multiplats then Nintendo fans will have less of a reason to get a PS4 or an Xbox One. Now the Xbox One is going to do good and the PS4 is going to continue to be a juggernaut and let's just face it, the PS4 already won this generation. All I'm saying is that it could eat away at a lot of potential sales for the PS4 and Xbox One.

For Nintendo to be even going after the same audience as Sony they would have to destroy the whole company they have built. People need to read the book game over and realize Nintendo has never really wanted to go after the hardcore adult market. Even when battling sega in the mid 90s they wanted to be super kid and family friendly. That's fine but by catering to that slice of the market it alienates the majority of gamers and Nintendo knows and is fine with that. it's true the market has changed. the kids that were playing the NES are adults, and many of then still love to play video games. Even the most 'kid at heart' types like myself are now grown 40year old men/women that want to play games that are geared to adult taste and adult sense abilities.

who knows maybe when I am 70 and life has come damn near full circle I will want to play light hearted kid friendly games, but not any time soon.

Well It's been establish that Xbox one sold more than 10 millions units (estimate from different sources says around 12 to 13 millions).

That number is higher compare to the 8.3 million 360 units sold between the same time frame.
Also you should take note that for 1 year Ms. had no direct competition from Sony nor Nintendo.

I think you are talking crap about European developers. I have quite a few European games on xbox one. And comparing the game stores on both consoles(Yes I own both) I am not seeing much difference in European games on either. There's Topico 5 but that coming on xbox one next year with extra content.

As for third party publishers. That's only because Sony are paying them. They would side with xbox if offered the money. For some reason Microsoft are just not bothered about doing these deals any more. Bad business decision on microsofts part though.

Storytelling? Nintendo games might not set the benchmark in storytelling but they set it in the most important aspects of a game: gameplay and fun factor. That's probably why Nintendo games sell much more than Sony and MS games, when the install base is there to buy them.

This would then likely be a gaikai like service and local hardware specs would not matter, only the speed of your internet connection. This would IMHO be a huge mistake for Nintendo.

A better choice would be to make a proper console with an APU that is at least a little bit more powerful than the PS4 and if needbe opt to drop the discdrive and go e-distribute only in order to keep cost down. Maybe go for something along the lines of $299 to $349 pricerange. Nintendo needs the NX to succeed.

they made huge profit off cheap hardware with a gimmick with the wii, so that was their new focus. they also said they underestimate the mobile market rapid growth with tablets why the believe the wii U failed.

they stated before they want too be the leader in new things, even if we do not think we need it an their interested in mobile as their gaming market as it is $$$ easy money from casuals their target audience.

Nintendo can compete and the recipe is simple.

Hardware needs to be more powerful than the ps4. This system is a 3rd pillar system so don't get scared to price it high. People aren't dropping 400 dollars on the ps4 because they want to they are because they know the ps4 is the better of the 3 in terms of power.

Games- I don't care what anyone says but this lineup at launch would be killing anything out there.

Mario Galaxy 3,side scrolling Mario,metroid, pokemon game of some sort, splatoon 2, f zero, new mother, real animal crossing game and the list goes on.

Advertising they need to go with the marketing company that does the marketing for the PS4 they are the ones that sold the ps4 considering there really are not a ton of first party games.

Sony's true competitor is anyone who makes consoles. The X1 a true competitor, as look at what MS has done with the box, especially the updates, and looks like many things Sony has implemented has been in response to MS. I own both the PS4 and X1, but the X1 is my console of choice. Sony may be leading in sales but what MS has done to turn things around I am very happy with, also looking more forward to games coming this year on the X1. The gaming industry is a better industry when all three console makers are doing well. The fanboy, mentality of of my team is better than yours which is all we see on forums like this I just can't with. I hope Nintendo does bring it with the new console. If it is appealing, I will buy that also.

I see a lot of fanboyism complaints about this article. Did anyone read the whole thing? I found maybe the first two paragraphs absolutely laughable with misinformation and poorly informed views. The rest is not half bad. It's not exactly a great article but it's far from a fanboy one (of one way or another) It just outlines some information from Nintendo and theorizes stuff.

When people scream fanboy in these articles since this is N4G chances are they are defending Playstation. There is nothing to defend here. The guy doesn't bash Sony once. He "asks" the question is it a viable contender.

I am a Playstation fan myself but the madness seen in fanboys "from all avenues be they specific videogame companies, brands, directors, tv shows. I am cured of it now. We get so bent out of shape over the tiniest crap. While the "competitors" (who often collaborate more often then you may think) sit back in their chairs eating popcorn watching us tear eachother's throats out. I am a fan of videogames themselves. Screw loyalty to any one company anymore. Having said this I only have the Playstation 4, 3, Vita, PSP, DS, 3DS, and Wii. I don't talk crap about the other systems though unless it is justified and I don't blindly excuse Sony "just because" either.

Actually back on topic? The first two paragraphs of this article are absolute garbage. The rest is perfectly fine. I admit it took effort to read past those two paragraphs after hearing such idiocy but if you do you may come across a decent article with a terrible introduction. Just read the whole thing through before jumping to conclusions.

As for the "laughable" bits?
The Playstation 4 hit the shelves in America in late November 2013, and has since been in rather fierce competition with Nintendo’s WiiU and Microsoft’s XBOXOne.

There has never been an instant from the time the PS4 was released until now Nintendo has been anywhere close to "in competition" with the WiiU. Companies were already abandoning it by the time the PS4 and Xbox One were announced.

The problem really is their gamepad. Those gamepads are insanely expensive so they dropped the possible support of additional gamepads and the development costs of the inner guts of the systems had to be less to make the system even a viable cost.

The next problem was the legions of Nintendo fans that felt betrayed by just how far behind the Wii was. Many felt outright deceived. Nintendo wondered mysteriously why the millions of people who bought a Wii didn't buy a WiiU.

Wii had some great games the WiiU has some great games. Neither are good systems. They are hardware that isn't at the level it should be that is still successful because in the case of the Wii (they sold and marketed it specifically to people who didn't play or barely played videogames, to get the family involved, they also claimed it had the easiest to use controller. A "fact I have NEVER found to be the case maybe it's just cause I am left handed by I find it the most difficult controller to use you practically have to be somewhat ambidextrous to tell your hands seperated away from eachother ok now on this side you press buttons and on the other you move.

Most of the people who bought Wii's kept it for a matter of months or if they did keep it it was done either specifically for first party titles (because no matter how hardware lacks the first party games are almost always worth playing from Nintendo) or it was used for social gathering to play Mario Party Mario Kart Smash Bros Wii Sports resort etc.

The irony is the success of the Wii is a huge benefit to the entire gaming industry. Most of the older folks who had been intimidated by videogames be it the controller or the amount of buttons or thinking games weren't catered to their audience would get so fed up with the Wii's "closed in" approach that they either traded it in towards a PS3 or 360 or they kept it but didn't buy anything else new for it unless it was first party.I can confidently say we AT THE MINIMUM doubled the amount of gamers in the world due to the Wii. I would suspect it's closer to triple or quadruple the amount of people who play videogames now but it's definitely well over double.

In the last 10 years we have gone from telling a random person about a videogame and getting the response What's a videogame?

To "Oh well I don't really play videogames. I just play Candy Crush and Farmville and Wii Sports... >< those are videogames. They may not be the games I would prefer people play but they are videogames. Everyone is playing them now and we have the Wii (and people getting fed up with the Wii) to thank for that. We have the Wii to thank for the dawn of casual gaming on cellphones too. Which isn't something I WANT to thank them for as I think it's a step backwards but it is still an achievement for the industry.

The more people are interested in games the more developers can invest in them the more new game developers we get the more the bigger the industry gets the bigger the industry gets the more it is taken seriously as its own form of entertainment. "We already started to see this with celebrities suddenly feeling it's ok to "admit playing videogames" when for a very long time it was considered "Taboo for PR" The more gaming companies the more talented developers get fed up with the bs bureaucrats of their massive comapanies they work for and go off and start their own companies which they can go now.

The old guard is dying and they are trying everything they can to hang on to control but they are going to lose. The Wii is a very large factor of this. Most of its shortcomingings can be directly linked to many great benefits of gaming in the last few years.

Conclusion Nintendo games are beloved Nintendo handhelds are beloved Nintendo Consoles with a handful of exceptions (NES,SNES,N64,Gamecube?) have always been underwhelming but the Wii was such a joke (yet such a success) that it's going to take a massive effort on Nintendo's part to get back to any viability in the console market. The WiiU isn't a bad system it's an underpowered system with a controller to expensive and propieatary to do much of anything they want to do with it. Since you can only have one gamepad and all the amazing (gimmicky experiences) are on said gamepad. Multiplayer which is what Nintendo is known for gets shafted. "Why can't I use the gamepad controller little timmy says as he punches his sister in the face and Anita hears about it like a fart in the wind and starts talking about how videogames cause kids to be violent.

I believe NX will compete, but that's only if my prediction for the NX comes through. I think the NX will have a gimmick, like all nintendo products. I hope it's a VR experience that incorporates the miiverse. Playing games as miis in VR could be gamechanging. Or a mario 64 type game in VR would be good too. I believe that's where nintendo will gain ground again, but we will see if they do.

I start out by saying that I am a huge Nintendo fan. However they have taken a huge fall from grace. They have been doing that for years, relying on their brand and their in house IPs and strong hand held platforms to carry them thru. That strategy is not going to work anymore, as far as Western customers are concerned. As a fan since I was old enough to remember. Nintendo was the top of everything.

They refuse to look at their competitors. The WiiU was a failure. Not because of bad games or people bored of Mario. It's design. They try to catch the "family" market. That itself is a mistake. The systems controller looks like a ToysRus tablet. The games while good, does not attract older gamers, they way systems look, games look. It nearly shuts off that market. Then it's graphical power. And it's specs make it next to impossible for big budget 3rd party games to run on it. They seen how well the Wii did with its motion controls. As a clever way to get family's to buy it because kids got exercise. But the trend dropped off. But it made the billions. So they expected everyone who bought the Wii would by the WiiU. Even if it was on its name sake. It backfired. Because their audience aged. And want the adult shiny games now. They cannot bank on the new generation every time.

To fix this problem. They must do one of 3 things.

1, They system must be at least up to Next Gen power. So that your cods and battlefields can release on them as well. Like a ps4 that can have Mario on it as well and let their fantastic franchises evolve with the times. This is a requirement for the western market. Because their in house IPs releases are too far in between, witch creates a gap that makes people want to buy another system. Also drop the name Wii. Go for something like The Nintendo (incert number or bold word) To show the customer that is not in the know like us nerds that it's a new awesome piece of gaming goodness. People got confused with WiiU not knowing it was a new system at first.

2, Make it a single power house that makes streaming it's focus. So it has a 100% back words compatibility, as well as their deal with mobile games and other ventures more easy. And embrace the smaller game developers.

3, they start to add their IPs to other companys. So Xbox can ps4 or pc can know play Zelda a Mario. Witch no real fan wants. But would save their company much grief.

Ether way I want Nintendo to do well. But it's just not what used to be.
