More puzzling than a tomb: why announce Rise of the Tomb Raider’s PS4 release now?

Those of us with the DualShock 4 close to our hearts rejoiced this morning when Square Enix finally announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider is really making its way to the PS4, but what was Square Enix's motive by announcing the PS4 release window for Rise of the Tomb Raider before it even got its exclusive release on Xbox?

Why not?....everyone knew it was coming to ps4 given the "Holiday 2015" tag and lack of saying it was console exclusive. NOW we know how long, a year which frankly in gaming is a long time= and I'm guessing that was exactly the point, end speculation, increase initial X1 game sales.

Rookie_Monster3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

Agreed 4Sh0w,

By revealing now that it is a one year exclusive, consumers finally are relieve and finally can stop thinking if they should just hold of until Feb or March because there is a chance it will be on another console.

I think MS purposely allow for the leak so they can use that as an advantage and allow for better sales in the Fall.

One year is an eternity in gaming year and there is no way true gamers would wait that long to play it if they are shopping for consoles and ask the Gamestop associate, "is this game on XB1 or also on PS4?" Gamestop employee "I have no clue so let me check the Computer database for you...oh, it say PS4 Tomb Raider release date 31December2016". Customer say "dang..that is almost 2017..too long, I'll get that Halo 5 bundle with Tomb Raider, Battlefront and Fallout 4 please".

Three AAA games in tomb raider, Halo 5, ,Forza 6, and BC to entice X360 owners to upgrade all strategically relase at a time where the opponent is at its weak point in terms of comparible contents and games, can cause some massive damage in sales. Well played by MS.

Genuine-User3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

Here I thought you 'loved' your PS4. You couldn't be any more transparent even if you tried.

It's almost embarrassing to read some of stuff you've written here

-consumers are relieved with the dates
-Microsoft purposely allows leaks so they can take advantage
-one year is an eternity in gaming years lol
-true gamers have no patience lol
-true gamers have no clue about gaming news
-true gamer buys a whole console for a game that will be released on his/her existing console
-Xbox one has all the games while Sony has none
-PlayStation is weak in content
-well done and well played Microsoft!!

No. Well done you Rookie.

bmwfanatic3200d ago

Thats cute that you think that uncharted drakes collection will sell way more than tomb raider on xbox this holiday I guarantee you.

_-EDMIX-_3200d ago

"Three AAA games in tomb raider, Halo 5, ,Forza 6, and BC to entice X360 owners"

How would that help XONE sales? Its just been revealed to be coming else where...

I'm sorry but when did Halo and Forza win MS any gen?

MS has been doing this fall push since they've released XB, the fall seems to be when they always bring about the classic, Halo, Forza.

Then next year, Gears, Forza lol.

But....when did that win them a gen? Why would old IPs some who make them win or sell more when in the past its never actually shown that?

The reality is, they can't afford to keep Tomb Raider silent and Square wanted a pay out for their deal, your asking Square to NOT adertise a game coming to 2 platforms and not go on a 24 million install base for 1 year, yet be silent about it?

Nope. Square asked them for MORE MONEY, it was now a bigger gamble based on Square's end of the deal just isn't fair, they are already going to be losing sales by doing this deal, but PS4's install base is showing them that they need more incentive to actually stay silent on a 24 million install base.

MS likely was paying for what the PS4 version would likely sell for a period in time....well PS4 kept selling and kept selling, thus...Square is now expecting a pay out representing what they would have earned on PS4 launch day, thus....because MS won't pay such thing, Square has no choice but to start marketing a PS4 and PC version.

Its only fair. The deal with MS likely would have hurt MS too, consider MS is paying a lot for this, what if they asked MS for 100 million on top of what it cost to fund, it would do MS no good to spend 200 million for 1 game that won't even bring them MORE SALES compared to Halo, thus...no point.

PS4's install base is why you see this happening, we didn't see that last gen when 360 was market leader for years, why? The ball was in their court, its no longer there, thus your seeing many deals go bust, they can't afford to pay for a timed game and tell a publisher don't release on the biggest install base.

They will simply say "bigger install base, bigger pay"

@Genuine-User,

"Here I thought you 'loved' your PS4."

I do love my PS4 contrary to popular beliefs, but I got to be honest with myself and can't lie to the N4G fans when the Xbox One has the better games coming out this fall. I always been fair and tell it like it is.

I gave praise to the PS4 exclusives when it totally deserved it like in the first half of this year on many occasions and even said Bloodborne is the best exclusive I have played this year.

Example:
Rookie_Monster  +&# 160;  131d ago
"A 9 is greater than a 8.5. That my friend is a fact. Helldivers, Bloodborne, MLB 15 are all amazing games in a March that the other consoles just can't match."

So now you are saying I can't do the same on the other side and is a PS4 hater if I do like something else when clearly the consesus is the XB1 has the better exclusives and features coming out later on this year?

@_-EDMIX-_,

I was going to reply to you to but I just don't have time to read through a 10 page essay ATM.

@BMW,
Your reply is the same as all your other replies and involves "my game on my system will sell more than yours..etc..etc" so I didn't bother replying.

star_lancer3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

"at a time where the opponent is at its weak point in terms of comparible contents and games, can cause some massive damage in sales. Well played by MS."

That's 100% right. So many haters around here want to believe that TR will get lost because of the other high profile titles releasing around the same time. Well, if a game like TR gets overshadowed, how will any of Sony's lesser known exclusives fare? TR is still much bigger than any game coming to the PS4 this year.

Any way you try desperately to spin it to the contrary, TR will be a big boost for X1 this fall.

freshslicepizza3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

why mention the release of the ps4 version now? to advertise the game for this fall and not to keep ps4 gamers (or those on the fence about getting an xbox one) waiting who thought it was going to be earlier.

so you either get two outcomes, people will say it's too little too late or they might think about getting an xbox one now to go along with the other big games coming this fall. some might say if it's only a few months i can wait but if it's a year they may be persuaded to buy an xbox one.

by being more transparent consumers can make better decisions.

@star_lancer,
"So many haters around here want to believe that TR will get lost because of the other high profile titles releasing around the same time. Well, if a game like TR gets overshadowed, how will any of Sony's exclusives fare?"

that's a good point. tomb raider still holds a lot of interest, sony has smaller titles coming this year so wouldn't they fare even less?

Genuine-User3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

@Genuine-User,

Glad you bought those up from my history. Let me post the entire post form your first example from my history. You sneakily left out the full conversation to try to make me into a PS4 hater when it is not the case as I was just replying to a troll with a solid comeback, that is all.

You second example from my history is exactly what I had been saying and is consistent with I believe in...Sony only has smaller, niche, indies titles releasing in the second half of this year and I have no interest in them. You could've chosen a better example than one that actually supported my point. LoL

"All Hailed Lord Spencer"

You got me, I have a man crushed on Phil. :(

Your last three examples are facts as The Orders bombed, Uncharted and Ratchet remake were moved to 2016, and what AAA games on PS4 has actually hit the locked 60fps so far? So how can I be hating when all three examples were facts at the time when I'd posted them? Again, that is consistent with my saying of "telling like it is". Again, you just helped proved my point. :)

Genuine-User3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

So you decided to troll the troll? Well done you.

Give it a rest. Your comment history is full of Xbox praise whilst downplaying PlayStation at every given opportunity.

And I have proved your cosistent inclination towards a specific brand. Nothing is hidden.

guess the stereotype is true for Xbox fanboys, you only seem to enjoy racing and shooting in your games, hence why you have no interest in arguably the most charming platformer; Tearaway Unfolded. Or horror, exploration, adventure, jrpg, hack & slash and action adventure; the uncharted collection.

Genuine user was right. Serously?? Please do some research before you type anything stupid. PS4 GPU is not "Off the shelf" It is also custom made. So many websites in the past when PS4 launched said that you cannot build a gaming PC which is equivalent to PS4. This "Off the shelf PS4 GPU" your talking about is more powerful than your highly praised xbone GPU which mostly does 900p and rarely 1080p. Bro just stop, stop being IGNORANT. and keep making excuses that your not an xbone and MS fanboy, we are not stupid and stop pretending. Remember kids "STAY AT SCHOOL"

Palitera3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

First of all: I'm primarily a PS4 player. I just use other platforms for games unavailable on my preferred platform.

That said, congrats for the objectivity on your comment. You do have some well based opinions (best line up for this next semester is HEAVILY subjective) and analysis ("true gamers" won't wait a full year for the game).

But, what I really wanted to point is that you shouldn't use the expression "true gamers". See, I am a true gamer, not a doubt about it, but didn't buy another phone to play Fallout Shelter. A lot of true gamers here missed Titanfall, Bloodborn etc.

What I think you're referring to is addicted, obsessive gamers. Yes, these ones can't stand waiting a full year to play a game they are wanting and is available to them. Tomb Raider is not a system seller at all and there is a choice only for people that own both consoles.

Please, don't stop making intelligent comments due to the usual biased behaviour of this community.

PS: Yes, I do know you're a soldier on the MS army. It doesn't stop anyone from making decent comments.

Genuine-User3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

@Rookie

The Order's critical failure doesn't negate it's AAA status. In the video game industry, AAA is a classification term used for games with the high development budgets and levels of promotion.

How does a Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank delay help Microsoft sell more consoles? Lol

Here's a list of some AAA games running at 1080p and 60fps on PS4:

-MGSV
-Call of Duty Advanced Warfare
-Wolfenstein
-The Last of Us
-God of War Remastered
-Infamous First Light
-Diabolo 3

You were taking about 'facts'? lol

Nice find outside_ofthe_Box.

"It is never coming"
"everyone knew it was coming"

lol

Outside_ofthe_Box3200d ago

@Rookie_Monster

Hmmm...

What exactly do you are with about 4Sh0w's comment?

It better not be this part:

***"everyone knew it was coming to ps4 given the "Holiday 2015" tag and lack of saying it was console exclusive"***

I seem to recall you saying that it wasn't ever coming to PS4 due to MS publishing TR: http://n4g.com/news/1757921...

So apparently not "everyone" knew it was coming to PS4.

NeverHeavyMan3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

I was just having this debate with you the other day, and you insisted that you were not only "pro-Sony", but that your post history proved it. In here, however, you have, once again, proven the complete opposite. I've tried to give you the benefit of the doubt quite a bit, but once something is exposed, and often, the truth is the truth.

Also, we debated about this Tomb Raider deal vs SFV on PS4 and you also insisted that the situations were, and would remain, the same. Yet, in here, you're now saying that "everyone knew ROTR was coming to PS4". Unfortunately, it just further proves your inconsistency as a poster. In the future, eat a little humble pie and admit it when you are wrong. You'd get a different response here.

OT: As I said earlier, though I'm happy for PS4 owners on this one, the ones who decide to buy it, that is, I'll be getting it on both Xbox One and Steam next year.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3199d ago (Edited 3199d ago )

There aren't going to be stampedes of people running out to buy a Xbox One just to play Tomb Raider when it's coming out on PC in the Spring of 2016 and PS4 in the Fall of 2016...

The only winner in this situation will be Square Enix, and I'm sure they're laughing all the way to the bank with Microsoft's money...

AngelicIceDiamond3199d ago

I think ppl are just upset the fact its a year away instead of 6 month like many were speculating.

Scrivlar3199d ago

I've just seen your arguments with this "Genuine-User" guy. And since I can't reply to him I just want to say sorry on his behalf for being such a biased PS4 fan boy. Clearly you are impartial when it comes to consoles and just state which is doing better at the time which is a rare quality on this site, and he should shut his fucking mouth.

Aceman183199d ago

I'm still buying this for PS4 I can wait to play it

andibandit3199d ago (Edited 3199d ago )

What speculation...I dont think anyone here(on n4g) was doubting the fact it was comming to PS4. In fact numerous time i've read comments along the lines of:
"I'll just play the improved version 6 months later", and it didn't sound so far fetched, except we now know its 12 months.

The only people who think it is/was exclusive are casual gamers...who dont read news like this and they are problably still under the same impression, or will be once the ms marketing engine starts.

All in all it's an advantage for MS.

showtimefolks3199d ago

Personally I think this will hurt sales for Xbox one , for someone who may have been on the fence now can just wait. There are so many games that are coming this fall that a year wait isnt gonna hurt as much

Uncharted trilogy vs tomb raider

And I believe the sales numbers will be a lot closer between the 2.

I am totally against 3rd party exclusive whether that's for ps4 or Xbox one, no body wins in these situations. But in years 2015 fanboys get extra pleasure and a really hard on for the word console exclusive

If I am buying a console exclusive do I get some money back? Do I become more happy? I mean I just don't get it, I rather amazing games be played by millions than limit to one install base

But I know I am in minority here with these thoughts, gaming in 2015 is all about the word exclusive. Whether that's exclusive game or content

Who's everyone you speak of ?!
How many times xbox fans kept saying that there is no chance in hell this game coming to ps4 because Microsoft is the publisher ?!
The same things they kept saying about Mass Effect.

Also this is not a smart move simply
Because it will hurt it sales on Xbox one
and also the fact that it's coming the same time as Fallout 4.

Edit: @pistolsatdawn
You need to look again then
even that happened to me here when i said it might come to ps4.

PistolsAtDawn3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

So people can't play it during the year between Fallout and Holiday season 2016? ...I plan to. Fallout and Halo 5 are gonna eat a TON of my time, but I will still be making time for this game and others before Holiday 2016.....just think...this time next year you COULD be playing TR. Anyone seeing this as EITHER when Fallout 4 comes out OR Holiday 2016 are looking for excuses as to why it's a "bad idea"...it's stretching it.

"How many times xbox fans kept saying that there is no chance in hell this game coming to ps4 because Microsoft is the publisher ?! "

I don't know...I wasn't counting...how many? Didn't seem like many...definitely less than the amount of PS-Only fans saying it'd be on PS4 in 6 months. Most Xbox fans I saw didn't say that...they said the right thing...that it'd be long enough that it wouldn't be worth waiting.

What if holiday 2016 Horizon is released....is that a bad move too?

grumpygamr3199d ago

Tomb Raider is coming out at a time when XBOX ONE has a bunch of major titles as well as the multi-console titles like FALLOUT 4. Tomb Raider is going to be buried. I doubt it will sell well this Christmas or Next.

PistolsAtDawn3200d ago

It's also funny how many people acting like COD exclusive DLC for a month is a huge deal (even though it's a primarily online game anyway...EASILY worth waiting a month)...are the same people saying that waiting a year for a game that is already at or close to the optimized max for this gen...isn't a big deal. Hypocrisy much?

isa_scout3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

I'm a proud owner of an Xbox One and a PS4,but I still won't be picking up TR.Fallout,BF3,Gears, and Halo will see to that.I have it on my GameFly though. I think TR is going to be in BIG trouble and SQUARE realizes that. It's going to get chewed up and spit out by Fallout. If they push back the Xbox One version it'll have to compete with Uncharted. If the PS4 version releases next Fall it'll go up against Gear 4, Horizon, and COD. They missed their release window in my opinion....Last month. I loved the TR reboot(not the mp) and I'll play it, but dropping $60 on a SP only title with limited replayability in a crowded month like November is suicide. Especially when the competition is Bethesda. Even Naughty Dog was smart enough to release TLOU in the summer where it wouldn't have to compete with other big titles.

Bigpappy3200d ago

@isa_scout: So what exactly does that prove. Different people have different taste. Many Xbox owner wouldn't buy Gears or Halo and will buy TR. That why we have choices. The more the merrier.

nyzma233200d ago

people are willing to bend to make their plastic toys feel superior ,console community is fvcked up

Revolver_X_3199d ago

"Many Xbox owner wouldn't buy Gears or Halo and will buy TR"

Lol. Aren't those the games Xbox gamers have to buy? Lets not kid ourselves here. I guarantee you you'd be hard pressed to find a TR fan like I am. Even I know ROTR isn't going to sale systems. It's not that killer app. Halo 5 is. Gears is. Because the marketing from those games are massive. Why do you think Black Ops3 went to Sony? You actually think PS4 stole it from MS? Hell no. MS is not going to share marketing with their 1st party shooter Halo 5. So MS let it go. Quite a blunder on their part. Now, BO3 and Battlefront have PS4 mind share. But ppl can think what they want. I know come 11/10/15 80-90% of the core gamers will be playing Fallout 4. Its fine, and I laugh that people underestimate the power of FO4. It would be like releasing the same day as a new GTA. FO4 is going to crush everything.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 3199d ago
_-EDMIX-_3200d ago

I think it has to do with XONE's low sales in comparision to PS4.

MS can't afford to pay for a year of silence like they used to. COnsider your asking Square to stay quite for a year on a title for a system with double the install base, they can't afford it.

Last gen with 360 in the lead, it wasn't as much as they where already making the most on 360 anyway, thus the cost for silence wasn't really that much, Bioshock didn't do huge numbers on PS3 after the PC and 360 release.

But with PS4 in the lead, they are asking for much more then last gen, they are asking a publisher to waste millions now, MS can't afford to spend even MORE MONEY for the PS4's install base thus, they can't do such a pay out.

Your seeing this based on the deal is not as iron clad as their other classic timed deals.

Hell, Titan Fall 2 is on all platforms, its starting to show that they just can't afford to do a pay out to keep a game from a 24 million install base, its just too much to the point where it doesn't even aid MS.

How many XONE's was Tomb Raider REALLY going to sell on an IP that sells better on PS? During a year Halo, MGSV, Fallout 4, Star Wars etc is releasing on, its just a really, really tough sale.

I think this was easily a bad deal on both parts. I don't see XONE getting much sales from Tomb Raider as much as Halo, that alone makes this deal even worse for both parties, but the deal was likely done prior to PS4's and XONE's release, they likely just never knew just how much the PS4 would be selling, but the damage has already been done.

Its going to sell EVEN LESS as who is buying an XONE if they own a PC or PS4 knowing it will be on their system in 1 year and even LESS on PC?

This timed deal went from bad to worse. The reveal pretty much guarantees lost sales on the XONE's part.

freshslicepizza3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

how can anyone say it's a bad deal when none of us know the details? obviously square thought it was good otherwise they would not have agreed to it. microsoft is likely thinking it's a good deal too because here you are talking about it, thus it's getting a ton of press.

it only appears bad because you likely wanted it on the ps4 sooner.

"This timed deal went from bad to worse. The reveal pretty much guarantees lost sales on the XONE's part."

that's hilarious. many thought the timed exclusivity was less than a year and now that they revealed it's a full year it means less sales on the xbox one? too funny.

_-EDMIX-_3200d ago

The deal may have been good when the install base was not so much of a gap, thus less risk.

More PS4 sales means more risk, means they made a mistake and likely would have never done the deal knowing just how much PS4's would have been sold.

"now that they revealed it's a full year it means less sales on the xbox one?"

...now that it revealed that its NOT EXCLUIVE AT ALL means its less sales bud, I'm sorry but its not going to help knowing that the game is coming else where, any way you slice it, its appearing on PS4 and PC, thus...its confirmed that if you where getting an XONE for this based on thinking it was exclusive, your less likely to buy one know based on this news.

It was always thought to be timed, its not confirmed that not only is it timed, its not exclusive to MS at all, it will be on PC and PS4, thus.....not exclusive.

ie one less reason to exclusively get an XONE.

I'm sorry but that doesn't scream more sales, that shows that its now going to by default of this news get less.

Someone was getting an XONE for this game that thought it was never coming to PS4 or PC...they now don't need to get a XONE.

I'm sorry if you can't see that.

freshslicepizza3200d ago

"Someone was getting an XONE for this game that thought it was never coming to PS4 or PC...they now don't need to get a XONE."

who's that? it certainly wasn't you. many months ago you were talking about how it was coming to the ps4 and pc. just like mostly everyone else. microsoft never said it was exclusive, they said it was timed. the only missing link was the length and now that we know you act surprised it's coming to the ps4/pc and now that means less xbox sales. a longer wait for the ps4 does not equal less sales on the xbox. it's quite clear you were hoping it was less than a year and now that it's a full year you just want to disregard any advantage the xbox has even more.

_-EDMIX-_3200d ago

@Moldy- nope. I knew it would be a year because it was for many of their deals.

The folks not buying XONEs are likely those that originally believed they needed one to play it.

How am I shocked? lol, I'm the one that called this bud, I'm not all gamers. Very likely that many gamers who thought they needed an XONE to play this, not realize the don't need to get one to enjoy it, thus...less sales.

Easily, its a lost exclusive, it will result in less sales then if they stated it was.

If one gamer states. *its exclusive, I need an XONE or 360 to play it"

Now doens't get a either based on this news, it means less sales, I'm not sure why you think all gamers called this lolz.

Nope...

I called it and many others called it based on MS past, but doesn't mean all gamers just knew this. It was quite divided and not all gamers are as informed as those on the interwebs bud.

Hell, even you stating stuff from a year ago, you telling me you didn't find anything regarding "MS publishing so no PS4 version" ?

Please bud, give it a rest, its now confirmed and those that now know the truth are able to choose knowing that either way, they will get Tomb Raider on XONE, PC or PS4 as suppose to just XONE or 360.

If your a PC or PS4 owner, its likely your now no longer getting a XONE for SOLELY this title, its now confirmed to be coming to your system, thus.....no need to spend on a new system for 1 game that is coming to you anyway.

Sooo yes, wasn't me bud, I knew it was coming to PS4 in year lolz, but I can't speak on other gamers that though MS publishing meant not PS forever.

Multiplat.....confirmed.

This will generate X1 sales for 1 year and 1 year is along time in gaming. The fact the X1 version is running 1080p as well there's no real point in waiting for a superior PS4 port when PS4 wouldn't be able to beat that resolution since a lot of gamers today think that's all that matters.

By the time its released on PS4 the game would be old and dated, UC4, Horizon, Quantum Break, Scale Bound, GoW4 and Gears 4 will most likely be released in 2016, TR will be an after thought. ROTTR will possibly be GOTY in 2015.

Deals like these are only stupid to those who favour the opposition.

Christopher3199d ago

***end speculation, increase initial X1 game sales.***

Sorry to say, but keeping speculation would have done more for X1 game sales. Heck, if they really wanted to send it home, only announce the PC release date and not the PS4.

S2Killinit3199d ago

Good point but im not so sure that it would boost sales on xbone, there are those who still thought the game was exclusive to xbox. They may have been more supportive if they kept thinking that i think.

hiredhelp3199d ago

I sure hope this not going become the norm the gap is Huge what was sqaure thinking of ...Money btw PC should been tagged in as they mention it in the article.
(though PC users are getting it in “early 2016”)

carcarias3199d ago

Agreed.

They probably suspected that people assumed there would be a 3-6 month delay before the PS4 release and they wanted to ram home the fact that it will, in fact, be a year - a big deal for some people.

In other words they're saying, 'Don't think you're getting Tomb Raider a few weeks later, oh no, it's gonna be a whole year. You sure you don't wanna get that XB1 for Christmas?'

I think release date for PC and PS4 will hurt Xbone sales!

by giving away the ps4 release now with it being so far off they are basically capturing the crowd that would've waited till it came to ps4. guessing their marketing and finance department found that crowd more valuable than the other millions of ps4 owners that are gonna walk past this game when it does finally drop.

stupid move from the outside but only they know whats going on,

fermcr3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

I guess this is a good decision by Square and Microsoft to announce the Tomb Raider PS4 release date so soon. If it's a great game, a lot of people will not want to wait a full year to play the game.

As for this...

"With so much to play already from September on, some gamers may decide a year is actually not that long in the scheme of things, and will just decide to play Fallout 4, Battlefront, and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate instead this holiday season..."

... is invalid. Every year, holiday season, is packed with games. This year holiday season is packed with games. Next year holiday season it will be packed with games. If it's a great game, a lot of people will like to play it as soon as possible, no matter if they release other games at the same time period.

Christopher3199d ago

***If it's a great game, a lot of people will not want to wait a full year to play the game. ***

And you think people will throw down $410 to play it a year early when there's a ton of killer games out this Winter?

You are overselling the power of Tomb Raider a hell of a ton, my friend.

Revolver_X_3199d ago

ROTR is not a killer app. MS in the end gets a big, big win. Hands down no matter what. Square will look back on the deal as a serious blunder. Look at the sales of TR, and Square said that was low and unexpected. How do you think ROTR will fair on one console up against Fallout 4 Day 1, and MS pushing their own 1st party games in the Holiday marketing campaign. The most you'll see out of ROTR is a snippet on a holiday line-up reel. Square got f***ed.

Xavy3199d ago (Edited 3199d ago )

Releases the same day as Fallout 4 = Bad decision

Fallout will crush it

Release date for PC = Very bad decision

Gamers who have a good PC with eather Xb1 or Ps4 will get it for PC

Release date for PS4 = Stupid decision

A very small group will buy it due to already played it on PC or are boycotting it due the long waite etc

Relientk773200d ago

This is just gonna hurt the Xbox One version sales for those who want this on PS4 and/or PC. Not to mention that they are releasing the same day as Fallout 4

neoandrew3199d ago

How? If someone want this on ps4 or pc, they would not buy it on xone either way.

So m$ is counting that some may buy xone for this game (buy not only for this game) if not the whole exclusivity deal is nonsense.

I think sony made better deal with COD.

OB1Biker3200d ago

I think a lot of people act as if everybody knew TR is a timed exclusive but actually Ms only said its timed on twitter or just when they where pushed to answer the question. Even quite a few of the supposedly informed gamers were confused (particularly with Phil saying its like DR3 or Ryse)

Most informed gamers knew it but for the vast majority of the public (not following gaming news regularly) Ms marketed this game as an exclusive.
But from now on nobody can doubt it will come to PS4 especially retailers. So I find the announcement puzzling

Software_Lover3200d ago

............. it has always been marketed as a timed exclusive.

Snookies123200d ago

Yet there were still people saying it was exclusive. I really don't mind either way though. I personally like Uncharted a lot better than Tomb Raider these days. I feel like all the rather mediocre Tomb Raider games that kept coming out before the reboot made me lose interest in the series completely. Don't know why, but I just couldn't get into the reboot like I wanted to. It looks like a really cool game, but Uncharted won over my heart it seems in Tomb Raider's absence.

Spotie3200d ago

Microsoft was deliberately vague for some time after the game was announced as coming only to Xbox for the holidays. Even after that, they intentionally kept it unclear as to whether it would release on PC, PS4, or both.

And the Xbox fans around here ate that up, saying that meant it would come to PC, but never PS4.

Now, though, they all want to act like "everybody knew all along."

OB1Biker3199d ago (Edited 3199d ago )

Phil eventually said it's timed but marketing was all about it being xbox exclusive. Coming in holiday 2015

Zero Dawn sold really well so I’m not sure this belongs. The second game released next to a big game again and it hurt it some I forget what it was though, oh yeah Elden Ring .
But a good game is a good game to me I don’t care when they release personally but they do have to think about it when you want to get more people to buy it.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness467d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch467d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730467d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior467d ago (Edited 467d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot469d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto467d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior468d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B467d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws467d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730467d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69467d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.

They're all solid games, but nothing quite matched the epicness of the first one for me. I think the 3rd one started off strong but once you got to that Peruvian area it took a massive nose dive for me.

lelo2play848d ago (Edited 848d ago )

You got to be kidding!
The first one was great at the time... but this latest trilogy of Tomb Raider games are also great.

LiViNgLeGaCY848d ago

I think he means the first one in the new trilogy.

CrimsonWing69847d ago

I meant the first of the new trilogy.

Furesis847d ago

yeah i remember liking the first one when it came out, so i tried the second one sometime after release and i just could not get into it, i couldn't finish it. So i might try the 3rd now that i got it for free but ehh. But i do remember enjoying the first one, i wonder if i'd feel the same way if i played it today? Better not taint those memories lol

ANIALATOR136847d ago

I was the same for some reason. Never finished the second one. I got like half way through maybe.

ActualWhiteMan847d ago (Edited 847d ago )

The first one of the latest trilogy is a masterpiece

Fishy Fingers848d ago

I'll take a copy of Shadow... Cheers.

Profchaos848d ago

Great games I've played them all on ps4 but it'll be good to finally try shadow on my rtx card.

Double_O_Revan848d ago

Trying to claim them and the store keeps crashing. lol.

gamefreaks365848d ago

EGS has been having issues all day.

RedDevils847d ago

Weird I don't has that issue.

Double_O_Revan847d ago

I finally got it after a while. But it was real bad for a while.

PeeShuter847d ago (Edited 847d ago )

Claim games by going to the website and login using ur credentials. I did the same as i couldnt use epic launcher. Also try reinstalling Epic Launcher I did it and it worked.

Double_O_Revan847d ago

I always go through the website. It was all just down for a while yesterday it seems.
