PS4 Exclusive Kill Strain Won’t Be Pay to Win; Sony San Diego Focusing on MLB and Games as a Service

Sony San Diego has been working on the upcoming PS4 exclusive Kill Strain, and while the game will be free to play, the studio is keen on promising that it won't be pay to win. In addition to that, everything that is not MLB the Show at Sony San Diego is now focusing on games as a service.

Obviously the studio will say they will try to not make the game pay to win. I don't get why people talk about these things to the people making the game. It's not like studios will outright say "Yeah it's pay to win"

Same with Capcom

Same with NCSoft

Same with former SOE with H1Z1

Silly gameAr3266d ago (Edited 3266d ago )

It's like people rush to be the first to say something negative in some articles. Not everything is pay to win or just a studio trying to pull a fast one for a quick buck. Some examples I can think of are Warframe and DC Universe. You could play those and have a great experience and not have to pay one cent unless you want to.

mikeslemonade3266d ago

Not interested in baseball or games as a service.

mkis0073266d ago

Well gw2 got around it(pay2win) by eliminating the gear treadmill and instead relying on models and skins. Ascended armor (the highest stat tier) can only be crafted by the player using it because it is account bound...some of the base materials are limited to 1 crafted per day...meaning rich players cant just buy gold and get it right away...they have to wait just as long as it would take someone to gather the mats the right way.

Point being...it is possible to make a free2play game without making it buy2play.

ChronoJoe3266d ago

Tribes, Smite League of Legends, Airmech, Dota, TF2... etc etc. All have free to play models that work.

NuggetsOfGod3266d ago

First of all sony is perfect.

MysticStrummer3266d ago

The game looks fun so hopefully they're truthful about it not being pay to win.

GrmpyolGamer 3266d ago

Its pay to win. H1z1 wasn't supposed to be pay to win either.

wegetsignalx3256d ago

H1Z1 is not pay to win. You pay for a supply drop that everyone else is alerted to, and if they kill you for it they get the loot.

You are lying, you do not know if it is "pay to win". You are making things up based on hatred of Sony/PS, not out of any logic or reason.

Joseph staten was the writer and narrative director on the first three halos...
having him along can only be a huge plus.
my understanding was he was consulting on it to begin with,
perhaps they brought him in in a more official/authoritative capacity now.

nowitzki20041337d ago

This is amazing news, hopefully we get the Halo we deserve.

VenomUK1337d ago

Good news, but if they've JUST joined the project this suggest that there is still a lot more work to do and the Q1 2021 release we were hoping for now seems very unlikely.

Baza1337d ago

This game needs all the help it can get. Too bad it’s issues seem rooted in its design.

1337d ago
darthv721337d ago

@venom, chances are they are here to help shore up any loose ends and not to rewrite (or start over). So my guess of March (Spring) 2021 still stands.

Then game has been in development for ages, if they've hired a writer to come in, you can expect some severe delays ahead.

L7CHAPEL1337d ago

again they started working on the engine 5 years ago, the game hasn't been in development for ages
... funny how nobody said that shit about the last guardian..
then again look at how highly-acclaimed it is (not)
just overhyped and forgotten...

RaiderNation1337d ago (Edited 1337d ago )

@L7CHAPEL

You cannot possibly compare a niche title like The Last Guardian with a tentpole franchise like Halo. Stop defending this train wreck as it only makes you look desperate and a little pathetic. You know good and well that MS crapped the bed here and there's no spinning it any other way. I dont care HOW long the game has been in actual development, you don't come out and present your cornerstone franchise to the public in this state. That's a direct result of poor management/poor leadership. MS wouldve been much better off NOT showing the game at all.

morganfell1337d ago (Edited 1337d ago )

HALO 5 Launched in 2015. After launch most of the team is unemployed. I guess you let your largest studio sit around and do nothing for 2 or 3 years. Sure your tech people are working on the new engine but your entire art team, your level designers, your sound people and a host of other employees just get to sit in an office and do nothing while collecting a paycheck.

No.

It has been widely known the game began development in 2015 (remember HALO in the hands of 343 was announced as a Trilogy - 4, 5, 6, and then changed to become a saga) and one issue this generated was 343 had no clue about the nature of the Xbox Series X hardware which had yet to be finalized in 2015, although in the end that was not the cause of their trouble. Attempting to craft a false narrative that the game has only been in development for 2 or 3 years is simply absurd. In fact it makes anything else a supporter of such has to say laughable. Attempting to distract from the issue by throwing shade at a competitor's game (which always wowed when it was shown, wasn't a flagship title, and took a huge beat down from everyone for its delays) is not going to alter the facts. And when The Last Guardian was shown there was no worldwide outcry of that trainwreck needs to be delayed. No, it was you need to give this to us now.

Joseph Staten is a great guy. Intelligent, a person with vision. But if you bring in a new lead at this point his job is either to act strictly as a personnel manager to meet the established timeline or you allow him to institute his ideas which inevitably leads to course changes and that means more delay.

The Wood1337d ago

What the hell are you talking about. People did and still do bring up the last guardian.

There's a clear difference between these two projects. You'd have to be utterly dense to use that as an excuse for Halo's shortcomings thus far. Compare the budgets and that should be enough but that isn't enough, take a look at the size of the studios.

ThinkThink1337d ago

Another thing to keep in mind is that he could've be brought on for the future storylines as this game will be on a 10 year cycle.

rainslacker1337d ago (Edited 1337d ago )

I can't see a writer or narrative director being overly helpful to finish the game as it is now, but I can see it being beneficial for future content releases which MS has said they have planned.

@L7

"funny how nobody said that shit about the last guardian"

TLG. You mean the game that was the poster child for Sony's delayed and troubled projects that constantly got mocked for being in development for ages?

Charlieboy3331337d ago

This is for Loser 7 waiting in the Chapel for a wife to show up.....sure bud, the engine took them all 5 years to develop? Really?? So what were the rest of the 1000+ people doing in the meantime? Obviously not creating detailed assets, textures, decent sound, etc. Just ask Craig...he has your answer....twat.

Charlieboy3331337d ago (Edited 1337d ago )

@ L7CHAPEL So for God of War they had to (gasp) create a whole new engine! Then...get this...they had to make a good game using that engine! Crazy right!!? And THEN....wait for it....they showed off that game when it was 2 years away from coming out and it looked GREAT! Then when it came out it turned to be the BEST....all in the space of just over 5 years. So what was your limp excuse again!? That's what I thought.....ask Phil to put it in deeper.....I can't hear you gagging yet.

Parasyte1337d ago

Staten said on Twitter that he was brought on as Project Lead.

L7CHAPEL1337d ago (Edited 1337d ago )

@Captain Henry No, it wasn't in development for five years.
they started working on the engine 5 years ago, the game was announced in 2018, same time they announced the acquisition of all their other studios.
they had barely begun in earnest building it and putting it together.
and them bringing in the person who wrote the first three, doesn't mean he's writing on it...he was overseeing a lot of their other games for the past 6 years, now he's creative lead which is nothing but good news. no matter WHAT is said you guys are just going to be negative, that's how you WANT to be about it.
so much doom and gloom/ fake bullshit concern, I know all you naysayers just care so much 🙄
but of course it's to be expected, it's about 80% Microsoft haters on this site...
can't wait for you guys to sit around and hypothesize and build the next fake narrative surrounding the game, seeing as it being delayed over a year and the Xbox one version of it being canceled, was proven to be bullshit. now you have to move on to the next thing (lie) f***ing pathetic.

sinspirit1337d ago (Edited 1337d ago )

@L7Chapel

Development can start alongside the engine. Which, btw, takes roughly two years to make, and games take roughly 3 years to make. They gave us the original release date and only changed it 3 months before launch. Don't blame us for pointing out how it wasn't ready, and for complaining they showed it to us with clear downgrades from a two year old trailer. Only to delay it so close to launch and blame it on COVID, not lack of quality.

Phil even stated he looked at all these games before that show and that they looked great. They didn't even realize it wasn't ready and all the issues with it. 3 months before launch. Not until public outrage did they realize. So incompetent.

darthv721337d ago

@L7, they announced the game with a trailer. Which means they had to have time beforehand to make said trailer. Hence the game has been in development since the previous one released. The announcement was made because they felt confident in where they were (in the development cycle) to announce it.

CobraKai1337d ago

It can be a positive effect on the game, but it’s also not a good sign. Originally HI was supposed to launch this fall, but only now these two have been brought in, after the delay? How was this game gonna ship? Like Street Fighter V with a story mode added much later? With a tentative release date of 2021, a new lead for the narrative, can only mean that their campaign was either incomplete or terrible, or both.

PrinceAli1337d ago

I would agree but Joseph was also the lead writer on ReCore and Crackdown 3.. So im shakey putting down any stock on it...

darthv721337d ago

ReCore and the SP side of CD3 (the story) are both really good. CD3 gets shamed for their 'cloud powa' narrative, which is not part of the story side of the game.

ssj271337d ago (Edited 1337d ago )

What comparing this to a masterpiece hahhaa its a fps the easiest thing to do next to arcade racing games specially when is a known ip is not like they are creating some new or unique. Last guardian IA and animation are the most advanced in any game ever that animal feels so real is amazing but like every of their games is always underrated and appreciate in a near future look at sotc for example. Anywas halo infinit looks and plays like a 360 game and is running on a 2k high end pc with 5 years of development and 500 million dollars its a shame lol eve. That Chinese game made by 1 dude looks better smoother hahahaha

Charlieboy3331337d ago

This is gonna be a year long delay... Clearly there was way more wrong with this game than just the graphics..........

RpgSama1337d ago

Yeah, the type of people they just added to the staff is not the kind that you add because you want to polish the graphics and squash all the bugs with these "extra few months" of development.

sinspirit1337d ago

Don't forget that they intend this to be a 10 year GaaS game. So, they are just preparing for post launch content, probably.

It's still worrying that they keep grasping several different writers to make all these different game storylines. They announce a new trilogy for the game.. and have a different writer for each game in the trilogy... This is already why the story is inconsistent, ruins past themes and concepts, and why it's dredging on. Oh, and why it's so clearly a money grabbing generic storyline from generic sci-fi authors cashing in on it to then write something else afterward.

How are we supposed to have an exciting build up to another story when everything is always just, lets add a new enemy and up the difficulty, and each game is so separated in concept and design. Unexplained changes, creative liberties without worry of incoherent plot, and just being made for the sake of getting paid. Not because good ideas were present prior to wanting to start development. You should be going into business with good ideas. Not just, lets make X and sell it for Y, lets follow these steps to do it.

NeoGamer2321337d ago

I am not sure that is a bad thing at all. The way things are looking, many launch games will be delayed or ship incomplete. I had already decided launch wasn't good enough for either new next gen console. Really the Halo delay solidified my thought process for both consoles.

Also, Sony started accepting applications for pre-orders yesterday. Still no price. This is really concerning me that these new consoles may even go above $499 at launch. Which would also reduce demand.

The more I look at the situation with COVID and the lack of really great content at launch, the more I feel that we won't see anything really worth buying until holiday 2021.

majedx91336d ago

" Clearly there was way more wrong with this game than just the graphics"

SteveMerriam1336d ago

Peter Moore sentenced Microsoft in a path that made more harm than good to the enterprise. The console brand of Xbox was designed to attack Sony Playstation in the cheapest way possible instead of competing with them in game quality. For better or worse MS is investing too little on the console names and the quality of their prime IPs. Trying to play on two consoles of different generations where a compromising move with devastating results.

They had to rewind....

Microsoft, has the money for a great Ip development but they are not used to hard work. It's not too late tho. They must invest time and money in it. Sure Halo Infinite could be great but what they did with the franchise was an assassination. Microsoft wrote Crack Dawn 3 all over it when everybody was expecting a next generation title. What surprises me is why MS shows a game that has serious issues on the story line and the graphics. Why they risk a full generation start when the easiest thing was to show something worthy for a reveal.

Microsoft seems to not be interested on games but on services at this point. Can't be more obvious. I'm not saying that Halo Reach could not be great but I wonder if MS is deeply interested in scoring a hit after all the debacle they are getting everywhere.

Starting to sound a lot like crackdown, I hope they can turn it around but clearly more wrong here than just the graphics engine. I hope for the halo fans it turns out well, they don't deserve this.

Profchaos1337d ago

343 just don't seem to understand why the original bungie games were so loved. This can only be a good thing

IRetrouk1337d ago

I hope so, the halo fans are some of microsofts most important, be a shame for them to get something not up to scratch, hopefully they can turn it around.

darthv721337d ago

I know why i loved them... the story. So if this guy was a writer on those first three then this is going to be good. 4 had a good story but weak MP. 5 was a weak story but good MP. 6 should be the culmination of both, and restore order to the galaxy.

IRetrouk1337d ago

I like the lore too, I can't comment on halo 5 as I'm yet to play it(lack of time, not lack of interest), but I've always enjoyed them(reach being my favourite), I just hope fans of the series get what they deserve.

Futureshark1337d ago

Phil S: "Ok guys, here's a cheque each, now as you can see I've signed it but left the amount there blank, so feel free to add your own number, but please lets keep it below $500 million, hahahahah!
OK, Pierre, you're going to help out with the, ahem, 'free to play', mulitplayer experience side, so please can you go to the stock room and get that huge vat of turd polish, including that leftover from Crackdown 3.
Joseph, you're in charge of the campaign story, so we'll need that huge bag of turd glitter that's in the car park, yes it's a new bag.
I'll just send a tweet now, telling the internet that I can't wait for them to see what we've got for them next year!"

I own all platforms, if you want to talk about a polished turd let bring up TLOU2 or maybe the far cry 3 3rd person clone HZD.
Don't get me wrong TLOU1 was and still is 1 of my favourite games but all these 3rd person games are getting very much alike, I mean GOW is as boring as hell "Boy come here" " boy" over and over, I could not bring myself to finish GOW nor TLOU2 they got very boring very quickly.
HZD was ok but just felt like I'd done all this before e.g climb towers to open map, take enemy bases without them setting off alarms, crafting arrows, quiver and all the other stuff from hurting animals, finding all the messages

Sad that you chose 3 GOTY and critically acclaimed games as an attempt to prove your incoherent point about polished turds. Epic fail man

Get on the Ball, Sony

Sony needs to quit wasting its time on mid-tier and free-to-play games like Drawn to Death and Kill Strain. Nobody wants them. They want quality games.

What kind of nonsense is this? PlayStation is pumping more exclusives than both Microsoft and Nintendo combined. Whatayawant you ungrateful sacks of dung.

rainslacker2437d ago (Edited 2437d ago )

Yeah, and that's what the author ignores. That their desires aren't everyone's desires. He may have a point if Sony didn't also have the kind of games that he claims to want....at least according to the description because I refuse to give cheatcc a click....but they most certainly do, and those games he says no one wants don't take up much time in Sony's marketing, and likely aren't getting huge resources behind them.

I can think of a ton of the mid-tier or lower budget games from Sony which have gone down in history as some of my favorites. Some games they have that didn't sell so well have been some great experiences. I'm not into every Sony game, but should we give up things like Hot Shots golf because it's not AAA? What about Gravity Rush, Freedom Wars, Puppeteer, or Dreams? LBP didn't start off as a AAA title, it just had that kind of quality to it.

The only time releasing these kinds of games is a problem, is when it's the only kind of games that they release. Even then, it just means I wouldn't be that interested in the products(see MS right now), and I'd willingly accept there are others that might actually like it. I'd never say they don't need those games, or need to drop them, Id just say they need to make more games that would cater to more people.

NXFather2436d ago

Well I would have agreed before you consider sales. So, I'm not saying they have no place(small games) but, they are not getting the horizon/uncharted sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic2436d ago

That's probably okay as long as their budget isn't big like AAA titles you mentioned, I imagine any reasonable person would do their best analysis and adjusted the budget to meet sales expectations (doesn't always work that way though).

StormLegend2437d ago

Umm.. what? we get quality AAA games and it's nothing wrong with having free-to-play games. Did you really wanna play a game called Gnomageddon? that sounds like trash and i'm glad Sony cancelled it. I know these cheap games tend to be terrible, but it's just something to play when buying the console.
