Xbox One: The #1 Console to Own This Holiday Season

You may know the story by now. In February 2013, Sony revealed the PlayStation 4 and announced a Holiday release window. On the one hand, many of us were awed by the games on display. On the other, we were skeptical as to whether Sony would actually make the release, much less deliver even half the games it showed off.

It really is hard to say which is the number one console to own for the holidays. With the same third party support for both consoles it comes down to the exclusives, online capabilities, and benefits of the online services. If you are a fan of Playstation exclusives and are a fan of indie games, PS4 is the way to go. If you are more interested in Microsofts exclusives, want a more refined online experience, and the quantity of "free" games is less of a factor, the Xbox One would be better. There is no right answer to which is better, it all comes down to personal preference. If you can budget it, buy both.

VforVideogames3443d ago

You forgot to mention that XBO its cheaper and PS4 is more expensive.

Ultra3443d ago Show
GiggMan3443d ago

From $500 to $350 in less than a year, it's no wonder Xbox One is selling much better. I knew I'd have both consoles eventually but damn, it's happening quicker than expected due to the price drops.

I told myself that if X1 ever went to $350 or less (between the Wii U and PS4) I'd bite.

BG115793443d ago

That only means that Sony is now making more money than MS for each consoles sold...
Is MS even making a profit now?

Blaze9293443d ago

@BG11579 - no, it doesn't meant that.

The XBOXONE is a SCAM, it's not even a system worth owning because it was created to screw over the consumers, those screwed up DRM functions are TURNED OFF, just look at their history, paywalls, RRODs to boost sales, unnecessary battery packs, eating discs, WI-FI ADAPTERS,XBOX LIVE GOLD, early DLC to lure the non thinkers and the whoring of (once great) exclusives, shady business if you ask me, what makes you think Microsoft won't turn those features back on after the sales boosts? just saying.

Death3443d ago

You are aware Sony is making you pay for Plus to play online now, right? Battery packs vs. disposable controllers is an interesting debate. I've replaced a couple battery packs for my 360. They were $9.99 each. I have 2 dead Dual Shocks that I replaced at $50 each. I've probable invested a little over $100 for each platform for batteries. The early 360's didn't have built in wireless. I connected my PS3 and Xbox 360 via Ethernet until wireless standards improved to where I was happy. You are correct though, I had to pay $100 for my wifi adapter on my first gen Xbox 360. My launch PS3 had wifi built in. I also paid $200 more for the PS3. As time went on Wi-Fi was built into the 360 and the PS3 came down to the same price as a 360. Both companies also offer DLC. We seen it first on Xbox due to included HDD's and Ethernet ports. Playstation got DLC a little later since it was technically not possible without an internet connection and large enough storage device to hold it.

You have DRM on your Playstation. I always get a kick out of people pretending DRM is an Xbox exclusive. Playstation consoles had DRM before the Xbox released. It would be ignorant to blame Sony for DRM since it isn't something new. When you install a game to your HDD and try to play without the disc in the drive it won't work. You console needs to check that the game is in the drive before you can play. That is DRM. Digital downloads need you to be signed into your account. That is also DRM. Microsoft eliminated disc based DRM when they created a console that you could rip all your retail games to. They still needed DRM to verify ownership which took form of an online check in to match your library to the one they had stored online. This also enabled family game sharing and access to your library remotely.

I'm not sure I would claim others are incapable of thinking if I were you. I won't entertain you RROD claims which cost the company over a billion dollars and quite a bit of consumer confidence. As sad as it is to say, that falls more under the incompetence category.

Man what's amazing is people sittin there trying to agree with @Joey. Trying to dig up any excuse and wants again bring up the passed.

Yeah fanboys bring up the passed when they cant find nothing to bash the console currently.

"early DLC to lure the non thinkers and the whoring of (once great) exclusives, shady business if you ask me,"

Your right.

I guess your ashamed of Sony for WD and Destiny moneyhats then.

darthv723443d ago

If you truly want a system with little to no DRM then get a Wii-U. You can play right from the disc and sell/trade your games at will and their online is FREE.

@ Ultra

If you people in US and UK had the slightest idea on how poor the presence of the Xbox brand is outside your countries you'd realize how pathetic those comments are, Xbox One isn't dead outside of US and UK because it was never even alive due to such bad sales and market share. And US specifically may be the biggest market, but it's not the entire world, even PS3 sales surpassed Xbox 360 sales worldwide being launched 1 year later with a much higher price-point, now with PS4 more powerful, with same price and launching in the same period what you think will happen? Not to mention having more first party studios than Microsoft and Nintendo combined... It's not a fanboy or consoles war, it's as things are, and I hope Microsoft keeps fighting, because the more competition the better for all gamers.

Hate this stigma. It's like Xbox fans think if they say it enough times it will come true. This ain't Oz people you can tap your slippers and say it as many times as you want but it isn't coming true because as listwar.com will quantitatively show you this is COMPLETELY subjective! A man owns PS4 and WiiU and the thought of buying an Xbox One never is really that appealing but if he were a huge Halo fan he's sure it would be VERY enticing. Now on one hand a man is very against the mold in that respect (for buying a WiiU). On the other he's very with it (PS4 is the MOST popular by far now). Bottom line, the masses are saying it is NOT the console to own and ratings and games that have come out don't say that either. Sorry but it just isn't.

SuperLupe3443d ago

"as listwar.com will quantitatively show you" ...

Yeah but mobiles have more games than both PS4 and XOne combined.

That that mean anything ? No.

SoapShoes3443d ago

That's a silly response when you realize these games are very well received and not crappy phone games. How people can defend the lack of Xbox exclusives all spring and summer long is beyond me

Spotie3443d ago

Xbox fan losing a console debate? Bring in PC or, in this case, mobile.

Because THAT makes sense, right?

Kribwalker3443d ago

@soapshoes

Lack of Xbox exclusives all spring and summer?? What next gen exclusives did the PS4 have? Mlb multiplatform. FF multiplatform, last of us, a remake of a 1 year old game.... Before that was infamous, which came out in March. Xbox had, albiet not a great game, but kinect sports rivals in April. Dance central spotlight in early September. Where are all these PS4 exclusive games you guys keep beating your chest over. Between infamous in March and driveclub in October? Please enlighten me

zeuanimals3443d ago (Edited 3443d ago )

@Kribwalker:

Wait... MLB and FFXIV are multiplatform games according to you, and that's bad? I'll concede FFXIV because it's been out on other platforms for a while, but I guess that also makes the XBO's overall lineup pretty terrible too.

Forza Horizon 2 is multiplstform, according to your standards, as is Project Spark, Max, DR3, Ryse, Titanfall, and plenty of other XBO games.

I'll concede the remakes thing as I think TLOU shouldn't have been made on the PS3. Sony should've been more like MS and witheld some of their games from the PS3 to bolster the PS4's lineup, because that's what people like you apparently want.

You'll be pissed now, but you'll completely forget about it later on and apparently even be okay with that practice when those games come out on the next console, like how plenty of Xbox fans are feeling. I can't wait to not get many games at the end of the XBO's life cycle, be pissed about it, and then rejoice when I see all of the games that should've been there, on the XB2 instead.

Or, they can just push their consoles as far as they can and when they come out with the new one, they start working on that. I'd rather not have games moved around in the guise of more games, actually fund more games and it'll actually be more games I've played on the platform holder's platforms.

ThatOneGuyThere3443d ago

actually yes. it means a ton. mobile games are making a TON of money right now and its the best place to be as an indie. easy to develop for platforms, unbeatable market penetration. etc. Don't ignore mobile because you dont like it.

I had a hard time following your post Jaqen. If you are using the "masses" as an indication of which console is to own for the Holidays, wouldn't you use the one that has more holiday sales? If the reports are true, the masses in North America and the UK for the past few weeks are saying you are wrong.

Personally I don't think you can go wrong with either console this holiday.

ger23963443d ago

Dude, quit beating around the bush and give the Xbox1 your full endorsement already.

Death3443d ago

I didn't think it was a secret that I preferred Xbox over Playstation, but that doesn't mean I enjoy my PS4 or WiiU any less. If someone tells me they prefer their PS4 I won't argue since it is personal opinion. If they tell me I am stupid for owning/liking my Xbox then I will gladly debate it. The only thing that actually irritates me is when someone pushes something that is clearly opinion as fact.

Jaqen_Hghar3443d ago

What? A man supposes you only notice holiday game releases too lol and a man JUST said it was "COMPLETELY subjective!" if you look at the comment. Just tired of people trying to poo poo the PS4's lineup. They keep trying to attach a stigma that should not be attached because it's provided just as much if not more quality software depending on your taste. Oh and FYI PS4 hasn't been outsold worldwide at all this holiday. Stop narrowing your scope to just the US and look at everything why don't ya

Gaming247allday3443d ago

Xbox One has a great Line Up and Xbox LIVE and the OS Gets better and better, monthly updates, great games, Phil Spencer and Halo?? cmon now you know whats up

Xbox has the best games for the holidays definitely the console to own.

Ra30303443d ago

@ polow got sol
The holidays will soon end and then what? We all should play these holiday games forever?
If your a "DudeBro" type gamers and don't mind the Microsoft mistrust issues and can live live with the fact that Microsoft will at some point stop supporting the console and that day will be long/ years before Sony stops supporting its console then the X1 is clearly for you but if your a gamer that loves all type games to include the "DudeBro" class of games and and you want to get more than your money's worth and you want the console supported years after the next gen consoles are released then the PS4 is the way to go. Or if you wanna keep up with the Joneses, the Smiths and the everybody else's then you'll with the PS4 like everyone else.

jspsc1233443d ago

it should say xbox has the best exclusives this holiday season. even that is a opinion. im more excited about dragon age and farcry on christmas than sunset overdrive and halo.

Sad day, hopefully they’ll allow a third party server solution. Goes to show game preservation is an uphill battle.

blackblades5d ago

Sad day oh wait everyone that whining about it didn't play it or haven't played it in years and never was going back to it. Funny how people start to care when this happens but when it was actually up those same people didn't even pay attention to it.

rlow15d ago (Edited 5d ago )

First, you don’t know who has or hasn’t played it. So that’s your assumption. Secondly, even if people haven’t played it in awhile, it’s still nostalgia. Those memories of sharing your creation and having fun playing other peoples creations. Third, no game out there is really like this or as iconic. Today if they made this they would nickel and dime the whole way through and it would launch broken.

Cacabunga5d ago

Reason why i really dislike online games.. they become unplayable over time.. LBP story mode is actually only a tutorial

_Decadent_Descent5d ago

How would you know who's played it or not? What about those who get into games years after their release? They can't now. Besides, and more importantly, this sets a bad precedent across the industry when it comes to game preservation and people's ability to enjoy what they've paid for.

blackblades5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

People still play it but not a lot probably a fee people and I know you 2 guys haven't played it in a long time. If the server was doing so good it wouldnt be shut down. As I said the same people that whine and cry saying bad things on Sony etc are the same ones that havent or stopped playing a certain game in years. Let me ask you guys straight up and y'all tell the truth have you guys played it recently and when you did for how long did you play it.

SonyStyled5d ago

@blackblades “ Let me ask you guys straight up and y'all tell the truth have you guys played it recently and when you did for how long did you play it.”

Whatever “straight up” and “y’all” is, I can tell you the “truth” to answer your question.

I’ve been playing LBP2 for the past 5 years, I have 10 levels to Ace in a row and a coupe more hours in create mode for platinum. I played LBP2 earlier today in crate mode.

It sucked when LBP 1 and 2 servers were closed on PS3, but all those creations were still playable on PS4 LBP3.

Every level creation since LBP1 can’t be played now

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 5d ago
CDbiggen5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Just disappointing. I have such nostalgia for this game and the user levels from LBP 1&2 and I already was gutted when they were shut down but at least they were on LBP3, and now this means I can't ever revisit those creative worlds again. All because some trolls or whatever decided to exploit these games, of all games, for some reason.

What needs to be highlighted by this is that the series has had 4 main games then that go kart spin off yet sony let them all die.

There is 0 games like this on ps5 and to my knowledge 0 first party main kids games no tech demo crap

Sony purchased Media Molecule studio the ip then tossed it away letting it rot for over 7 years yet the community carried on until now were we have lost 16 years on all games of content along with no replacement.

Everyone goes on about ea killing studios but sony has killed way way more but its fine its sony they can do no wrong.

Before the sony blidboys track me down again go fire up your holy boxes all the dlc they tossed out all the trophies and all the user content needs a server side handshake that no longer works. Yes offline single player version 1.0 works but that is it.

Media Molecule was not cut i know but they only made LBP and dreams it was reported they just missed the chopping block
https://gamerant.com/little...

Do not forget the dreams game was tossed out 2020 but 3 years later support was pulled
https://www.digitaltrends.c...

All in all this is another failure at sony on a long long list in the past 10 years

Inverno5d ago

It's kind of hard to disagree when SONY has a history of abandoning many of their IPs. They killed Mod Nation and turnt it into LBP Karting because of brand recognition but left it to die too. They made their own Smash Bros only to rush the studio, and turn the game into an advert for recent release at the time and still let it die. They shut down PS Home for more or less the same reason, they left it to rott till it became too broken and exploited to bother fixing.

just_looken5d ago

This right here

Playstation home is what facebook is trying to make now but in vr that metaverse deal

Imagine if sony kept up ps home development

The death of playstation forums was also a huge loss

Demetrius5d ago

When they refused a days gone sequel and no acknowledgement of a infamous series remaster of those gems, I knew Sony slick abandons stuff, sure they still release good games but to an extent smh

u-bEttA-rUn5d ago

Their games were unable to attract the masses every game that came out the attachment grew smaller and smaller they advertise LBP for years the industry changed and then came fortnight... You want Sony to continue to support them which cost them money that they're not getting back from the studio.

DOMination-5d ago

Honestly, I think a well-designed LBP-style game would do better than ever in the current state of the industry.

People have short attention spans. Having something that is pick up, play a few levels and put down again is the experience the "masses" are after.

Keep it as a 2D platformer only with well-designed base levels, make it easy to build new levels and more importantly easy to access new content - personally I always found the way Forze Horizon 4&5 provide daily, weekly and monthly challenges via new content that they've built or handpicked from the community is a system that works great - and then stick it on mobile and PC with Steam Deck support.

Make it F2P with a one-off fee for the level editor (to stop people spamming crap onto the store) and have MTX for more characters, outfits etc. and there you have a live service game that Sony should be all over.

Do the same with a new Karting game and a 2D fighting/Smash Bros style engine and you have three bangers right there.

(I appreciate the N4G community will hate the idea of LBP being a live service game with MTX and I get that but I think if there's one game this model could work well for, it's this.. just imo)

anast5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Astro's is similar.

Not enough people cared to play it, so they cut it.

Sony has never been a kid friendly console. This should be obvious. People go to Nintendo for this stuff.

DarkZane5d ago

All signs actually point to a new Astrobot game coming to PS5, so you'd be wrong.

anast5d ago

It's the game that came with the PS5

StoneTitan5d ago

Its on media molecule though. They did not want to continue LBP. Sony accepted that.
Sumo continued it. With a solala lbp3 and a great sackboy though.
Its not sonys fault. They dont want to force a studio to create a new LBP game.
But I would love a revival.

romulus235d ago

For some people Sony can do no right either. You can play Sackboy A Big Adventure on PS5. So there is "a game like this" on PS5.

anast5d ago

I feel bad for Media Molecule. For the ideas they have it seems they need a publisher that supports games like this and Dreams especially for as many players as possible.

DOMination-5d ago

Sony in the Andrew House era did support them massively though. They let them do their thing with LBP and spent millions marketing it. I remember one E3 they even used LBP to cover the boring parts of the presentation where they talk about sales figures etc.

And then they allowed MM to announce their game on the PS4 console announcement/showcase event and waited the entire generation for them to release it.

10 Years Later, Sunset Overdrive Still Remains A Beloved Xbox Exclusive

Does it still hold up in 2024?

We've still got a few months to go, but October marks the 10-year anniversary of this Insomniac Games title, with the developer having since moved on to work on the Marvel's Spider-Man games for PlayStation. It was assumed that Sunset Overdrive might make its way to other platforms eventually, but that hasn't happened as of yet.

So beloved that it sold so well that there's a sequel and Insomniac never had the opportunity to go back to Sony to develop games exclusively for Sony.

RaidenBlack20d ago

ngl, I was low-key expecting Sunset Overdrive to migrate to PS as well along with Hi-Fi Rush and SoT

Christopher20d ago

I think that would require Insomniac going back to work on it to port it over, probably why that's not happening.

RaidenBlack20d ago

Didn't Sony help with SoT port?

Christopher20d ago

I think only in so far as they support every piece of software heading their way? They have that team who specializes in helping people port games, not just SoT, and then the one team that takes PS5 games and ports them to PC (that's their full time job essentially). But that team, the former mentioned one, doesn't do all the work, just help out with how to best do things. So, that team wouldn't port a whole game like Sunset Overdrive.

RaidenBlack20d ago

Ok I thought you meant Insomniac reluctant/Sony not permitting them to go back and work on Overdrive. Hence I added the participation from Sony's side.
But yea, In actuality its Insomniac not having spare dev time to get involved in the port work, atm.

Christopher20d ago

*** But yea, In actuality its Insomniac not having spare dev time to get involved in the port work, atm. ***

Definitely this. They're working on two major IPs as it is and Sony forced them to layoff some people at the end of last year as well. So, likely not capable of sparing the time because resources are being fully utilized.

badz14920d ago (Edited 20d ago )

There was an article awhile back talking about the situation with SSoD. Insomniac does own the IP and Sony now owns it after they bought Insomniac but the publishing right for SSoD is owned by MS - at least the 1st game still is. MS has to sell the publishing rights like they did with the first Mass Effect game to EA after EA bought Bioware before Sony can do anything with the IP.

Einhander197219d ago

Nobody cares about Sunset Overdrive, except all the xbox fanboys who didn't buy it but like to come into articles about the game and try to act like it's somehow Sony's fault for whatever reason.

there was supposed to be a sequel. IG had it all planned but MS said no. And Sony wont greenlight a sequel if they cant get the first one away from MS. Plus... IG has other projects they moved on to anyways so...... yeah.

fr0sty19d ago

Well, with the recent change in policy towards exclusivity, I imagine Sony could get MS to port it over.

Zeref20d ago

Because a game needs to sell 10 million copies for it to be considered beloved 😂

Christopher20d ago

I mean, it's also not a highly rated game, not even in Insomniac's top ten or even top ten on Xbox that year. With this logic, any game can be beloved and so throwing around the word beloved means absolutely nothing. Doesn't have to sell or have great critical reception, just a handful of people need to love it.

Hofstaderman20d ago

You guys are so starved for games you reminiscing about a decade old game made by a now Sony studio. Of course it never sold 10 million, the vast majority of people bought a PS4.

LucasRuinedChildhood20d ago

A game not played by many can still be beloved by those who played it, yeah.

Only making a profit of $567 after 10 years shows that it was not as beloved as it should have been though. That's really bad.

As much as people complain about AAA games not being unique or having fun ideas or bringing in new IP, a lot of gamers don't show up for them. Even less people seem to have played Hi-Fi Rush.

romulus2319d ago

What's it considered if it just sells 1.8 million copies like it did?.

FinalFantasyFanatic19d ago

It was okay when I played it on PC, idk if I'd consider it one of the more beloved games of that generation.

I mean, it sounds like you're just hating on the game - but, I loved it. It was one of my favorite games of it's time and that generation. Replayability could have been better, but I still managed to play it several times. I would have greatly appreciated a sequel and definitely would have been in line to pick it up..

Things happen.

Christopher20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

***I mean, it sounds like you're just hating on the game***

No, that's all the people who refused to accept that this game was beloved and never even bought it. I, on the other hand, bought, played it, thought it was 'okay' and moved on.

Now, what hate did you see in my post other than listing the fact that it's not as beloved as the few who liked it? This and Days Gone get way more love in online discussions than they do in sales and support, I find. Both are okay games, not much more. But for some **unknown** reason, people prop them up often as more than they are.

Profchaos20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

It's in noabs land unfortunately as Microsoft own the publishing rights to sunset overdrives original game while insomniac own the IP.

So Microsoft would have to be onboard with publishing this game on PlayStation systems with the understanding the would not profit from any subsequent games in the franchise unlike the games they are currently releasing on ps5 to get players into their franchises this would be a small cash injection build a fanbase around a game they no longer own then nothing.

Not beloved enough for Xbox owners to buy it apparently, Xbox was the worst possible audience for that game.

Obscure_Observer20d ago

Sony couldn´t give a f* about Insomniac´s freedom of creativity, that´s why you don´t have a port for that game and will not be getting a sequel either!

That franchise wil probably never make a comback thanks to Sony´s greed for money, which have turned Insomniacs into a Marvel´s slave factory until 2030.

It´s sad, but it is what it is.

ApocalypseShadow20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

I didn't know that Ratchet and Clank were part of the Avengers of Marvel? Hidden in the ending credits of Guardians of the Galaxy or something? Captain Marvel?

Beyond the "cry me a river" of your comment that these Marvel games aren't on Xbox, it was Insomniac that was approached by Sony to work with Marvel to make a game. And let them decide what character they wanted to develop. They chose Spider-Man. Must be highly profitable for them. Wolverine is a profitable, recognizable character. And the X-Men definitely are a hot property that gamers would love as a story based videogame. Being that X-Men 97 brings back a popular Saturday morning cartoon and the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU movies coming up.

It was Microsoft's continued incompetence in cancelling the Marvel MMO game and turning down Marvel in making a super hero game as they were asked first.

Keep the tears flowing. It's not greed. It was smart business to say yes. And maybe Insomniac wants to make these games. And not a game that didn't sell well to an audience that doesn't buy games.

Christopher20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Neither does Microsoft either, based on your own argument here. Microsoft denied the sequel, not Insomniac/Sony. There's also no sign that Microsoft is allowing a port. They control the next two games in the IP and any DLC or the like for the first. But, nothing.

What's sad is people trying to use this game to blame businesses for doing business things that they are both doing as some way to make them look worse. Microsoft wants to use Insomniac to make a good IP that sells their platform and Sony wants to use Insomniac to make a good IP that sells their platform. But, no, Sony bad!

Don't know why the truth that these companies are very much alike is so hard for people to accept.

romulus2319d ago

Your comment literally contradicts itself but troll statements typically do. If Sony is so greedy for money as you proclaim than wouldn't it behoove them to not only release the first game on their console but a sequel as well, as that would be a way for them to make profit and that's apparently their focus according to you? Speaking of profit and greed, I suppose Microsoft bought all those Developers and Publishers in hopes that they wouldn't make any money from it, right? Your ability to troll on this site with impunity is whats sad, but it is what it is.

I bought it, along with at least 1-2 million others.

Very fun game that need a sequel.

Insomniac: “We went with Microsoft because we want to own the IP so it’s ours”

Microsoft: *owns publishing rights preventing the studio to re-release the original game, make a remaster, remake, any DLC, massive expansions and multiple sequels on other platforms*

The logic is just…I never got it

Owning the IP was Insomniacs main defence when they announced they were making a game exclusively for MS and yet they’ve ended up “owning” an IP they can’t do anything with.

If they went with Sony like normal you might have seen a sequel by now.

The winner of the Logic Cake has to be Bungie, though.

Wanted to be free from Halo and MS, so they buy themselves out, only to partner up with Activision, in the same timeframe as Activision ousting the heads of Infinity Ward, for a full decade with Destiny.

... And then things start falling apart in that relationship almost immediately, whodathought!

Hey, when Sony offers to overpay you for your services and signs a contract that says they won't force you to do anything you don't want, who would say no? Such an overpriced purchase from Sony. Poor business, IMHO. But, honestly, I'm not a business person. But, still, I don't understand it.

...and it seems this conundrum is also why the game cannot receive any sort of FPS boost patch for Series consoles. IG wont make it, and Ms can't get another team to do it without consent from IG. I liked it on XBO, but now I also have this on PC and I can tell ya... it definitely benefits from a 60fps frame rate.

been playing it at 1080p144fps on my modest pc. not the hardest game to max out and yeah this game definitely needs to be played at high fps considering all the actions

darthv7220d ago

Sadly this may never get the proper fps update it deserves on XB (or even PS) but I now play it on steam and it definitely feels better at 60fps than it did at 30. Its a fast paced game... you need that 60fps in this one.

This game was so fun. Me and my brother put many hours into this one.
