It's true it isn't advertised, however it is a show of appreciation to the consumer. It's a good business plan for customer relations with the developer. This will galvanize loyalty (sometimes) with the developer.

You are incredibly narrow minded. If you do recall most stereos had a variety of compatibility. CDs cassette tapes, vinyl...
Even some DVDs had VHS as well.
Backwards compatibility is important to people who still enjoy the classics. But no sony wants to resell these games that you already know on their network even though you already may own the game. Maybe some losers have no problem cluttering up their living rooms with consoles (unless you have a man cave which is ok haha)...
So... Though I agree the entire series up till the third was great. Even a majority of the third was amazing, obviously the ending was horrendous. I just feel that they alienated the fans. They had a great chance to make things right but instead... We got the ec. Then leviathan... Then omega, all of which I never bought (save for the ec.. It was free)
Anyway the ending sucked, was atrocious...
