A game going from an already low $40 to 50% off during the summer a month after release is not common or expected even for bad games.
Games get discounted to $30 quickly when it is Black Friday or sell poorly, it is not common

You mentioning the dpad for fighters making sense, if you are referring to it on the top rather than bottom you make zero sense, unless you are implying it is the natural resting position for your thumb so it would make sense for a fighter. If that is the case I don't know how the concept of people liking the analog in that spot as well.

Not really depends on the games. If I am playing a shooter I want that layout. If I was playing a JRPG, something with a bunch of menus, or 2d I would take the symmetrical layout.

Anyways I think price is more of deciding factor for the 3ds market, because for most the XL is superior because most will take the big screen over the tiny one. The N3ds is unpopular and even more so thanks to a cheaper XL model now. If anything the 2ds line will eat away at the N3ds and n3dxl, which is probably what Nintendo wants.
The 3ds xl is the best model at $200
the 2ds xl is the next best option ...
